n this discussion on component development, a separate chapter is devoted to each critical development feature, including asynchronous calls, serialization, remoting, security, and more. All the while, hazardous programming pitfalls are pointed out, saving the reader from experiencing them the hard way. A .NET expert and noted authority on component-oriented programming, Lowy uses his unique access to Microsoft technical teams to the best possible advantage, conveying detailed, insider information in easy-to-grasp, activity-filled language. This hands-on approach is designed to allow individuals to learn by doing rather than just reading. Indeed, after digesting Programming .NET Components, Second Edition, readers should be able to start developing .NET components immediately. Programming .NET Components, Second Edition is the consummate introduction to the Microsoft .NET Framework--the technology of choice for building components on Windows platforms. From its many lessons, tips, and guidelines, readers will learn how to use the .NET Framework to program reusable, maintainable, and robust components. Following in the footsteps of its best-selling predecessor, Programming .NET Components, Second Edition has been updated to cover .NET 2.0. This invaluable resource is targeted at anyone who develops complex or enterprise-level applications with the .NET platform--an ever-widening market.
Customer Reviews:
Good for Newbies.......2007-06-08 Book goes through the entire process of building controls, nothing is untouched. It dwells however much too long on the 'standard' topics of installation, distribution, setting up etc and is rather lite on the the real stuff like building controls that look and feel like commercial controls. Would be a good book if it had 20% of the pages.
Excellent in what it covers.......2007-03-08 Pros:
Material that was covered was done an a very concise, clear and justfied manner. More so than just about any other computer book I have read. As others have mentioned, the explanation of the mechanics of remoting are excellent. The coverage on the other topics was incredibly informative as well its just that Remoting stands out since the topic is not covered as well elsewhere. Several helper/extension class examples are included which help to enforce good practices. I found the coding practices addendum to be a helpful summary of the topics discussed in the book.
Cons:
While remoting is discussed, it defers discussion of the EnterpriseServices namespace (object pooling, transactions, lifecycling, etc) to a previously published book. I find these features a necessary consideration in component design. Instead of feeling like I know everything about dot NET components, I now feel like I have to read another book. Having said that, WCF, at least at first glance, appears to be among other things a rework of ServicedComponents into an attribute driven dot NET framework and less reliant on COM+. I hope that is the case because JEE has already proven that inhertance based component mangagement such as ServiceComponent cramp system architectures. I also feel like the book does not adequately cover the use cases appropriate for designing a distributed application. It covers the mechanics/how fine but it doesn't address the when and where portion of distributed components.
Juval's latest book covers WCF and I am looking forward to reading it and hope it will address the areas I felt still needed to be addressed by this book.
Interfaces Factoring.......2007-02-02 On page 73 of this book the author wrote:
" An in-depth discussion of how to decompose a system into components and how to discover interface methods and properties is beyond the scope of this book".
I would encourage the author to write a book that discusses specifically about interface factoring and to provide more examples on how components should be decomposed and organized in large scale applications.
Best book on .NET ever readed........2006-11-10 Yes, I am always very demanding on programming books and this title taught me more of all the others.
I definitely suggest it.
Simply Awesome.......2006-07-14 This is the my first review on Amazon. This book is so nicely written. The examples are short and precise. All the Advanced topics are covered in a great way. Highly recommend it to all developers who want to gain more expertise.
The book is good if you want to have a solid information about the .net Assemblies,Remoting, Async. Programming, Delegates. The best thing I like about this book is that every line has a lot of weight. You can read about remoting in say 30 - 50 pages and will get a deep insight of remoting. Then you can read a advanced book on remoting to get the fine details. If you directly read the advanced book on remoting it would take a while to get an idea about the complete picture of remoting..

Customer Reviews:
A "must have" for design/manufacturing engineers.......2000-02-12 I teach Product Design Engineering at Ohio State and I can honestly say that Bralla is absolutely the best single reference for working designers and manufacturing engineers that I've found. An incredible compendium of useful info on just about any manufacturing process you can think of, and plenty you HAVEN'T thought of, plus chapters on Design for Assembly, materials, economic considerations - you name it. The book is a bit pricey, but considering the amount of useful information packed into it, it's a steal. Bralla far exceeds McGraw-Hill's regrettably low standards for their handbooks - this one is a keeper!

Customer Reviews:
I agree.......2006-12-05
I agree with the majority of the reviews here. This is an invaluable reference book. Put it this way, this book will likely save you at least one re-spin on a complex board. That alone will pay for it's cost many times over.
Cheers,
Must have reference book.......2005-01-07 The only reason I give this book a 4 star rating is because of the information that was removed from fourth to fifth edition. To serve as a complete reference you must buy both editions. The topics covered are significantly different.
Excellent books. Must have for any person involved in Printed circuit board industry.
Not for designing PCB.......2002-07-26 I bougth this book to have a reference on the desing of PCB. (How wide to design the traces, what distance should i use betweeen traces...) I found it prety useless.
Nevertheless, it is a goog book to undestand the process and manifacturing of PCB, if this is your business
No set complete without this reference book!.......1999-06-22 Complete coverage by a number of writers with diverse backgrounds. The highest praise I can give is that I use it daily!
A good book for the engineering shelf but needs updating.......1999-02-20 This is a good book that has been around in earlier editions. The editor has done a credible job of finding knowledgeable people to write for him. I have used all of the earlier editions of this book at one time or another and have found it helpful along the way but it needs updating more often to avoid becoming a history book.

Customer Reviews:
Assembly Language Step-by-step: Programming with DOS and Linux (with CD-ROM).......2007-06-01 This book was excellent! It starts with the basics and works you though the steps required toward working with Assembly. Even if not programming,. it gives great insight on understanding the inner working of the processor and memory. A definite must for those interested in debugging the Intel processor.
Great Information - And Cure For Insomnia.......2007-01-10 This book will teach you how to program in Assembly
No doubt about that. But it WILL put you to sleep.
If you can endure lengthy explainations
then you may find this book useful.
And you can always pick up little things from different sources.
This is a great alternative source.
Otherwise check out:
"Assembly Language for Intel-Based Computers (4th Edition)"
For a more fast paced, easier to understand method of coding ASM programs.
Good for beginners but really long-winded while missing details.......2007-01-09 This book appears to be good for true beginners. It is, however, quite large and for its size still chooses to put some important details "out of scope". Its choice to remain with NASM, even in the Linux world, is a little frustrating and limits the books use.
But it is an easy read, and does cover the most basic stuff (such as computer design, file formats, etc).
Great Introduction to the Forgotten World of Assembly for Beginners.......2006-04-13 Last semester, I checked this book out from our school library and absolutely fell in love with it - it's superb. The author Duntemann has a clear, fresh, and very light writing style that's not loaded down with an overabundance of superfluous "geek-speak". Before delving into new concepts, Duntemann tries to get the reader to grasp, in a real world sense, how the concepts apply to the machine.
Considering that universities nowadays spew sizzling venom on the "difficult", "slow", and "forgotten" art of machine language, I've done my research by reading the opinions of what real programmers (who've worked in the industry probably longer than I've been alive) have to say about assembly language -- Every article or column I've read has convinced me that learning assembly language is not only a mechanism to speed up sections of your code, but it's a forgotten goody most programmers today lack, and if you're up to the challenge, coding in assembly is the perfect addition to your "bag of programmer's tricks".
Duntemann's book is perfect for beginners of assembly language, and I do mean beginners. Be forewarned, however: this book will NOT make you an assembly programming pro; it probably won't even knock you into the 'intermediate assembly coder' category, either. This book is a stepping stone to other more detailed books, and if nothing else, it teaches you how to THINK in assembly language, rather than learning the "nuts and bolts" of assembly. AN EXCELLENT BOOK.
Best Assembly Book.......2006-03-08 The author starts this book out very strangly, but once you get into it you find that his craziness is well deserved. Programming is very difficult, but learning the basics is even harder. It starts out helping a person understand the numbering system of computers and then moves on into the meat of Assembly Lang

t really don't give a damn about anything except having a joking time on the job. It also made the workers sound like they were underachieving, undereducated, bottom of the barrel workers and I didn't care to have that stigma for all of us. I hold two bachelor degrees, like my job and take it serious!
Now I know why GOOD BOOKS DON'T PUT UP WITH writin' and drinkin' .......2007-01-05 It's just hard to read, after a while. I never grow to like the guy at all, he's appears to be a total loser while WRITING LIKE A TEENAGER IN A CHAT ROOM. THEY DID NOT MAKE THE CAPS LOCK FOR THIS REASON. And it's okay to quote somebody talkin' but throughout the whole book, writin' and talkin' and movin' and drinkin'. Sounds like a petty thing but after seventy pages it gets very old. Basically the same thing as people who either didn't have the opportunity to have a basic education or didn't bother to apply the one they had.
The book, or as far as I got in it was interesting, but I just couldn't put up with the sheer lack of professionalism which, by his story isn't surprising and I'm not trying to say this in a way to slam the guy, it just is what it is. A depressing story which had potential but I think he was probably too stubborn to listen to somebody (assuming someone brought it up) in regards to the ALL CAPS and writin'. If it is a downer of a story so be it but I have hundreds of books to read and am not going to finish one that is so badly written. And for me to say that a book is badly written... hoo boy it must be.
It was interesting to hear about how the GM plant worked, and how the workers would slack off and so on and I actually wanted to get through the book. This probably makes me a bit of a snob but if someone isn't going to write with basic english skills which he definitely must have, yet chooses to get ALL CAPS all of the time I have many other books which were written with basic respect for the reader and the language. Never thought I would get mad about something like this either. Just kind of slap in the face to think a reader would appreciate TYPIN' LIKE THIS IN A BOOK SOMEBODY PAID TWENTY DOLLARS FOR.
Could have been better, I wish I hadn't bought it though. I wanted to like it more.
Kyptonite for the right wing industrialist.......2006-12-12 This book crossed my path as required reading in a college comparative studies class. I was unable to put it down. Like catching "The Blues Brothers" on television, regardless of where you pick it up you are locked in to the end. This scary look into the world of the shop rats when the boss is away is handled perfrectly, not overwritten yet visually abundant. Buy this book immediately.
Good read.......2006-08-08 I grew up in and around Flint, Michigan during the decline of the auto industry there. It was very common to see family members and other people I knew in "the shop" deal with the seemingly annual layoffs and the re-hiring process. Rivethead does a good job illustrating this to people outside of the auto industry.
As another reviewer mentioned, the portions of the book detailing the quality mascot are hilarious.
It probably helped that the places Hamper describes and mentions in the book were all places I knew growing up.

Customer Reviews:
I Read this book Cover to Cover .......2006-05-08 Overview
Boothroyd and Dewhurst's Second Edition of Product Design for Manufacture and Assembly provides an accessible and reasonably thorough introductory treatment of some of the most common topics in the field of design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA). By introducing the theoretical underpinnings of DFMA in the opening chapter of the book, the authors provide context and support for the importance of the field in modern business, and draw attention to the many ancillary benefits of applying DFMA methodologies in a business environment. Subsequent chapters describe these methodologies, as well as major assembly and manufacturing processes in some detail. The authors also provide basic tools for cost analysis within the context of DFMA. On a whole, the book is a worthwhile read for novices or users of the authors' commercial software, but the content suffers at times in its dependence on that same software, and in its failure to explain or note omissions which were made in the favor of brevity.
Materials and Process Selection
The second chapter begins to elaborate in depth on some of the concepts developed in the first chapter by discussing the driving considerations in concurrent materi

is a significant barrier to the application of the book's estimation techniques to real-world problems. At some level, it is possible that this decision may have been intentional, as this detail-like others-is presumably encompassed in the more complex algorithms and procedures used in the authors' software. At times, in fact, the book seems to suffer overly much from its companion status to the authors' software package, which the authors rely upon to fill in conceptual gaps in their writing.
Electrical Engineering Student Review.......2006-02-25 While the book contains useful information, a great deal of it is available online in various places, though it is a good all inclusive reference. I think it will come in handy in the future as well as for the finer details of my Design for Manufacturability course. At times the content can be a bit dry, but that's to be expected from about any textbook.
I think that the section on B&D for Robotics is outdated and no longer "true" with todays technology. But if you're not using it for robotics reference, it seems that the material is fairly time inclusive. (Meaning that for certain types of manufacturing, the processes have remained mostly the same over time and most likely will not alter too far in the near future.)
I hope this was clear enough to help someone decide if they should use this textbook or not.
Great book.......2005-09-12 As an academician this book is easy to read but practitioners will have no diffculty in understanding the content of this book. I rate this book as a great book because of its practicality and yet it is theoretically sound.
good methodology on how to re-engineer a product.......1999-01-13 Boothroyd and Dewhurst are recognized as international experts on the re-engineering of electro-mechanical products. Their methodology and guidelines have been widely documented to make significant savings. I have used their techniques with dozens of products in many companies in North America with vast improvement. I have also taught these techniques to many, many engineers who have had the same success.
The book is a good, comprehensive overview of designing products to ease thier assembly and manufacture. Other texts are available but most are not written as clearly.

Book Description
For quick and accurate square foot cost estimates and verifying unit price estimates...
This indispensable tool provides you with thousands of building assembly and component costs. With the accompanying drawings, explanations, component breakdowns, and reference tables all within one easy-to-use format you can quickly estimate a building's square foot cost and easily compare and price alternatives.
You'll find separate reference aids with code requirements to assist you in budgeting any job, or to quickly check a unit price estimate or subcontractor proposal. Tables of unit prices allow you to cost out virtually any combination of building components or assemblies in the logical sequence of how the building is built.
Using the UNIFORMAT II numbering system as a guideline for consistent estimating and reporting, Means Assemblies Cost Data 2007 enables you to easily price and compare various building assemblies. Use the manual's complete examples and references to build your own assembly cost data file.
Customer Reviews:
A quick way to an estimate........2007-06-11 The Assemblies Cost Data method is a reliable and fairly quick way to generate an estimate. This is especially helpful if you want to compare the costs of different construction types (i.e. steel, pre-cast, cast-in-place). However, I found that I still needed the information in the more detailed Construction Cost Data book to fill in missing items, like demolition, louvers, or ceiling insulation.
Means Cost Assemblies is Super Info! A lot more than prices.......2000-09-07 This book is great for those of us just starting out in construction - it breaks down each system so that you may price the pieces individually or as an entire system price.
It's really great if you don't know what you should be looking for in a complete system. For example, what goes into a stem wall - this book explains it, and then prices each individual part. Great resource!

g how the parts of your system work together to meet your system's requirements</li>
Modeling how your system moves into the real world, capturing how your system will be deployed</li> </ul>
Engaging and accessible, this book shows you how to use UML to craft and communicate your project's design. Russ Miles and Kim Hamilton have written a pragmatic introduction to UML based on hard-earned practice, not theory. Regardless of the software process or methodology you use, this book is the one source you need to get up and running with UML 2.0. Additional information including exercises can be found at www.learninguml2.com.</p>
Russ Miles is a software engineer for General Dynamics UK, where he works with Java and Distributed Systems, although his passion at the moment is Aspect Orientation and, in particular, AspectJ. Kim Hamilton is a senior software engineer at Northrop Grumman, where she's designed and implemented a variety of systems including web applications and distributed systems, with frequent detours into algorithms development.</p>
Customer Reviews:
UML 101.......2006-11-29 This book could have been titled UML 101, because it is very readable. However it assumes that the reader knows a bit of an object oriented language, in particular Java. Chapters 4 thru 7 demonstrate how UML diagrams are used to model OOP principles such as class inheritance, interfaces, and messaging using Java snippets of code. This is an important part of the book, but it isn't a show stopper for those unfamiliar with object oriented concepts. The authors briefly explain what classes are; they also define abstraction, encapsulation, state, and behavior.
I Highly recommend this book for getting familiar with UML.
In particular:
- It's very readable.
- It is not specific to any UML software tool, only the standard symbols and diagram layout practices.
- It is a book that you could open up to any page and browse.
- As a future reference.
Good and Handy.......2006-11-17 Nice to read and quick to understand with the illustrations. Well described examples and after going through the frist few models you would able to quick start building the models. Overall, It is recommended for a one time read.
Good conversational approach that builds on itself..........2006-09-30 Based on a recent project at work, I realized I needed a better understanding of UML. To that end, I decided to review the book Learning UML 2.0 by Russ Miles and Kim Hamilton. While there's still a lot to learn there, I think I have a much better grasp on what's going on...
Contents: Introduction; Modeling Requirements - Use Cases; Modeling System Workflows - Activity Diagrams; Modeling a System's Logical Structure - Introducing Classes and Class Diagrams; Modeling a System's Logical Structure - Advanced Class Diagrams; Bringing Your Classes to Life - Object Diagrams; Modeling Ordered Interactions - Sequence Diagrams; Focusing on Interaction Links - Communication Diagrams; Focusing on Interaction Timing - Timing Diagrams; Completing the Interaction Picture - Interaction Overview Diagrams; Modeling a Class's Internal Structure - Composite Structures; Managing and Reusing Your System's Parts - Component Diagrams; Organizing Your Model - Packages; Modeling an Object's State - State Machine Diagrams; Modeling Your Deployed System - Deployment Diagrams; Object Constraint Language; Adapting UML - Profiles; A History of UML; Index
Miles and Hamilton use a conversational approach to introduce the reader to UML 2.0, and they build on a model that makes sense. The Use Case view drives nearly everything, as that's the "what" of what the system is supposed to be able to do. Then they cover the logical, process, physical, and development views that support the system and show different perspectives of what the system will look like depending on which angle you view it from. All too often, it seems like UML diagrams are just thrown at the reader one after another, and there's no real explanation as to how it all fits together. Fortunately, that's not the case here, as the model framework for their tutorial puts everything in the right relationship to each other. I also appreciated how the diagram tutorials started out with just the basics and built from there. Again, it's common to see a tutorial diagram with every possible permutation thrown in right at the start. As such, it's far too easy to zone out right away because of all the baggage. Here, you get the core elements of the diagram first (which often cover 80 - 90% of what you need to know anyway), and then the extra details are introduced after that. I was much better able to conceptualize the whole discussion when put in that light... Very nice job...
I would say that if you have this book coupled with a full UML 2.0 reference manual of some sort, you'd be pretty well set to do most anything you'd need to in the world of UML. I know I'm better equipped to do those sequence diagrams now, where before I was faking it pretty well... :)
UML Definitely Made Easy.......2006-05-19 Easy to understand -- great diagrams -- I highly recommend this book.
The are much better options.......2006-05-12 Unfortunately, this book is so poorly written that it is often confusing. Especially for a beginner, I highly recommend obtaining a copy of Pilone's book instead. The examples are much clearer and easier to follow, and the exposition is extremely clear.
