Good Introduction.......2005-11-05

This is a good introductory text to paediatric emergency medicine. It has a very practical approach to assessing problems.The book does not cover paediatric basic or advanced life support.However, it has good coverage of other paediatric presentations.

Don't be Fooled by the Title: The Best APL Primer Around.......2004-12-22

Reiter broaches what is often viewed a multi-faceted task in a manner so as to make functioning in APL (A Programming Language) straightforward, practical, and useful. Basics are taught first, both Monadic and Dyadic use of the elementary operators, later introduction to Del, programming and the advantages of the branch. Mathematical concepts, including the basic linear, and the less familiar higher-order regression techniques are presented along with the APL equivalents of the algebraic technique for simultaneously solving equations.

I appreciated the updated reference for some of the more antiquated terms which may appear in other volumes of earlier vintage. No longer is fuzz tolerance, stack clear, clear stack, or such antiquated terminology present to confuse the reader. No more thorns, here. A simple )RESET sets everything clear.

Those familiar with the Interactive Approach would appreciate that A Rose is a Rose, and the standard for much of what we do, but for the newly initiated into the Magic of APL, Reiter makes all of the initial steps very )CLEAR.

The thema thoughout the excellent text/reference/adjunct to mathematical course is that set theory, Boolian Algebraic processes and APL work hand-in-hand.

After demonstrating basic skills in monadic and dyadic operators, the reader can go to DEL and really begin to gain the experience of just what APL is all about.

Again, )SAVE APL ! with all of its factorials and permutations. Reiter has certainly helped to do so by providing a work which will hopefully introduce a whole new generation to APL.

An efficient introduction to mathematical solutions in APL........1999-09-28

This excellent 200 page book describes itself as an "introduction to APL", and it does contain an efficient and orderly introduction to APL functions, operators, syntax, and arrays. By page 30 or so, however, it begins to use APL to solve some serious math problems--integration, Netwon's Method for solving roots of equations, the Power Method for estimating eigenvectors and eigenvalues, as well as common statistical methods. Instruction in APL language is integrated throughout with the exposition of these math problems.

This book is a useful introduction to APL2 -- IBM's modern dialect of the APL language. APL2 is available for many platforms, including Windows, OS2, RS6000 and IBM mainframes.

The first thing to keep in mind about the book is that IBM's bundling it with IBM APL2/Windows and IBM APL2/OS2, so if you're planning on buying these implementations, perhaps you want to wait and get the copy with your software. Otherwise, if you're using the free TryAPL2 or your site has a license for APL2 and you need the documentation, then this book is very useful and helpful.

Having said this, here is what the book WON'T teach you:

- Shared variables. How APL2 manages communication with other processors, with other APL2 systems, etc. This is a very important topic.

- The associated and auxiliary processors: How APL2 manages screen IO, how APL2 talks to REXX or to your operating system, how to manage files from APL2 (!!!), etc.

Book Description

Presents the results of an investigation into the issues raised by the development of a compiler for APL, a very high level computer programming language. APL presents a number of novel problems for a compiler writer: weak variable typing, run time changes in variable shape, and a host of primitive operations. Through the integration of several recently developed compiler construction techniques, such as data flow analysis, and a novel and space efficient demand driven or lazy evaluation approach to code generation, the author has been able to produce a true compiler for the language while still maintaining the felxibility and ease that are the hallmarks of APL.

An APL Compiler.......2007-03-24

Prior to the introduction of nested arrays, APL was comparatively easy to compile. The author shows a practical method to implement demand-driven evaluation (i.e. don't do more that you absolutely have to) of certain classes of APL statements. Although the material dates back to the 1980s, it should be possible, with newer tools, to build very efficient portions of a compiler for a subset of the APL langauge using the techniques described.
