FOOD AS MEDICINE.......2007-06-20
I GIVE THIS BOOK A LOW SCORE BECAUSE IT IS NOT A VERY GOOD BOOK ON EATING.
THERE IS NO PORTION CONTROL INFORMATION OR SUGGESTIONS. PORTIONS ARE THE KEY TO A PROPER DIET. WE ALL [AMERICANS] EAT TOO MUCH. WE'RE ALL OVER WEIGHT AND SUFFER FROM MANY EATING RELATED DISORDERS. WHAT YOU EAT IS AS IMPORTANT
AS HOW MUCH. THE SHORT SECTION ON GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISORDERS FOLLOWS THE STANDARD ANTI-BIOTIC APPROACH THOUGH CULTURED DAIRY PRODUCTS [YOGURT,BUTTERMILK,ACIDOPHILUS, COTTAGE CHEESE, SAUER KRAUT ] AND FIBER DO A MUCH BETTER AND SAFER JOB OF CURING THESE PROBLEMS.
I THINK THE OBJECTIVE OF "MEDICINE" IN THE USA IS ILLNESS. BEING SICK IS BIG BUSINESS. PIG OUT AND OFTEN. BE SICK...ALWAYS SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR ANOTHER DRUG OR TWO OR THREE...
For dietetics students...too simple.......2007-06-10
I had to buy this book for a class, but only used it once. It doesn't really contain THAT much information, and when one has to do research, this in not the best book to use as a reference. If you're not a student, I'd say it'll be very helpful, but for students...it is just too simple and doesn't get into the complicated facts about nutrition or dietetics we really need to learn. I already graduated, and I won't recommend this book as the reference for a major course in dietetics.
still using the USDA Food Guide Pyramid?.......2007-05-19
I was disappointed to see that this book still endorses the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. Walter Willett's Book, "Eat, Drink, and be Healthy" has a much more acurate and up-to-date pyramid that emphasizes the importance of unsaturated oils, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fish, and he doesn't get paid by beef and dairy lobbyists who pay our government to spread the false fact that it is necessary to eat these products to be healthy.
Great gift , great resource .......2007-03-18
This book covers a lot of information that we cover in the food and nutrition classes that I teach. For my students, it's an invaluable resource with information I can trust It's balanced, accurate, and easy for students -- or anyone -- to understand. It's also become my standard gift for friends, weddings, and more.
"True to its Title" by Victoria Salvato-Lechner.......2007-01-22
As a 55 year old mother, triathlon trainee and in a highly stressful hospital occupation, it was great to find such straightforward and complete information at my fingertips. This book is easy and enjoyable to read and yet manages to be a quick, comprehensive reference. I have randomly chosen health topics that interest me, for example, medication interactions with vitamin supplements. The information provided was to the point and beautifully organized. I was especially intrigued by the "Have You Ever Wondered" sections, that simply and effectively debunked common nutrition myths. This book provides believable ammunition against the fad diets and quick-fix formulas that only serve to squander our hard earned dollars and time.I believe it to be a "must have" for any home library and will include it as part of a wedding present for my niece this summer.

Book Description
The true, bewildering story of a young woman’s disappearance, the nightmare of a small town obsessed with delivering justice, and the bizarre dream of a poor, uneducated man accused of murder—a case that chillingly parallels the one, occurring in the very same town, chronicled by John Grisham in The Innocent Man.</p>
On April 28, 1984, Denice Haraway disappeared from her job at a convenience store on the outskirts of Ada, Oklahoma, and the sleepy town erupted. Tales spread of rape, mutilation, and murder, and the police set out on a relentless mission to bring someone to justice. Six months later, two local men—Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot—were arrested and brought to trial, even though they repudiated their “confessions,” no body had been found, no weapon had been produced, and no eyewitnesses had come forward. The Dreams of Ada is a story of politics and morality, of fear and obsession. It is also a moving, compelling portrait of one small town living through a nightmare.</p>

A Greek Tragedy in Oklahoma.......2007-06-07
This is one of the most incredible stories I have ever read. I would take it for fiction if I didn't know it wasn't.
The story of Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot is fraught with tragedy and human error. Overzealous prosecutors, shoddy police work, too much reliance on one line of evidence (fake confessions), and incompetent yet highly paid defense attorneys all combined to spell doom for two men who never should have been on trial to begin with.
What Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot needed was a hero. As misfortune would have it, there was none. Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz had Mark Barrett and Barry Scheck. Ward and Fontenot had no one.
Barrett and Scheck worked tirelessly to prove the innocence of Williamson and Fritz, even long after their sentences. Ultimately, they were successful, and became heroes that stood up against corrupt justice and beat it back. But Ward and Fontenot have had no such luck.
If there is a hero in "The Dreams of Ada" it is defense investigator Richard Kerner. His findings helped unearth alternative theories as to how Denice Haraway died, and who killed her, and even provided the only concrete evidence in the case, photographs of Ward and Fontenot that should have proven exculpatory but for whatever reason were disregarded by the jury.
The surprising villian, in a story loaded with them, is jury foreman Leslie Penn. I won't give away too much more of the story, but it is truly a Greek tragedy in Oklahoma, albeit a riveting one. Had this story had a happy ending, I'd have given it 5 stars.
Very compelling !.......2007-04-11
This is a great follow-up to Grisham's "An Innocent Man". This true story is very well told to the point where it will haunt you just as Grisham's non-fiction piece from the same town and the same investigators. You will be disappointed with this author. Robert Mayer weaves the story as only a true proessional could. Very powerful expose on the Ada, Oaklahoma system of justice.
Couldn't put it down.......2007-03-26
I found this book in my airplane seat pocket and started reading it without knowing anything about it. I couldn't put it down. It's been three days since I finished reading it and I'm still thinking about it and wanting more. I wish there were pictures because I feel I know everyone involved. Supporting Tommy and Karl should in no way be considered disrespectful to Denice and her family. I'm sure they want the real killers behind bars to pay for their crimes against this lovely girl.
I do feel these guys are innocent and it breaks my heart. After many hours of denying involvement, and because of the police asking leading questions, Tommy and Karl confessed to the crimes. But none of the details of the confessions are true. The details actually had to be disproved by the prosecution - who was there, how she was taken, where she was taken, how she was killed, where her body was, etc. If the confessions were so full of lies, why does the prosecutor get to pick and choose which ones are true?
Why would someone confess to a crime they didn't commit? False confessions are more common than you think. Everyone has a breaking point and police know this. I hope the real killers are found very soon.
The Dreams of Ada.......2007-02-19
This should be the prequel to Innocent Man and Journey to Justice. This book and the other two mentioned I highly recommend. To believe that innocent men are put on death row and come so close to death for crimes they did not commit is sad. This book is well written, and follows Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenou from being arrested and put on trial, to the sentences of crimes they did not commit, all without a body, any evidence, just a confession that Tommy 'dreamed'. Was really hard to put down, and the outcome is heartbreaking.
the dreams of ada.......2007-02-05
well written non-fiction. this is one to be shared. it is staggering to realize how our justice system can be abused by those in power.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for learning ADA, but long...........2005-05-28
This book is great for people just starting with ADA because it initially goes through the basics of a program and then going through every component in detail. Since I was already proficient in C and C++ it was nice how the book points out how the commands are similar to not only C but also Pascal and COBOL (even though I don't know those two). I really like the format of the book. You get the format definition, then the syntax, and finally a short example of the instruction being used.
If you already know C or some other similar language, you'll probably get annoyed with how much detail it goes into at explaining the simple programs and code it presents, but you can always skip it.
My only complaints are how long the book is and the price. Not only is this the longest programming book I've seen, but it's also the most expensive. However, if you really need to learn ADA it's pretty much worth the price.
Not a book for those new to Ada.......2003-04-23
This is a poor book to learn Ada from. I'll agree that the book is a good reference tool, once you have a firm grasp on the language. I took a course four years ago with 14 other experienced programmers (Ada, C, ...), all of them thought this book was difficult to use as a learning tool. It lacks good examples and is poorly orginized. Go elsewhere if your new to Ada 95.
The ultimate Ada95 book, if you are experienced programmer........1999-12-01
Over two years back, I had to write and test huge amount of code (about 200-330K LOC) in Ada 95 (I had over 8 yrs. Ada 83 experience) in very short time. A colleague suggested to use this book. It has helped me in every way. The book contains very clear explanations about all the new concepts in Ada and it also covers the real-time issues, OOP, low-level multilingual programming, distributed programming etc.
Although, it was written for the "C" programmers who are new to Ada, I have since then worked on two more major programs and this is the only Ada95 book I am continuously using together with the Ada 95 LRM.

This book is the best Ada 95 book in the market. It covers everything about Ada 95 (core language plus all six specialized annexes). Chapters are presented in a tutorial format. Examples in the book are practical and realistic. Best of all you learn features of Ada 95 with a tremendous clarity. What is unbelievable is the ability of the author to teach you some complex topics in a step by step manner leaving no room for confusion. This book is complete in every way and entertaining. If you are a serious Ada developer this is a MUST BOOK. I use this book to teach adavnced Ada 95 classes.

Tiem Saver Standards - MUST HAVE!.......2006-11-07
This book is it. For an Interior Design student it is the only book I go back to again and again. It really helps with those beginning questions like... "how big is a standard king bed?" "How high should kitchen countertops be for wheelchair access?"

Fine for reviewing areas of weakness.......2003-10-28
I concur with the previous reviewer that the publishers should have been more careful to verify that the Q&A's were accurate and matched with one another. The content of the book is overall very thorough...FAR more so than needed for taking the exam (the AANP version which I passed today!). If you have this book, DO NOT go through it cover to cover as your main source of review, but, use it as an adjunct for areas of weakness. The CDRom was disappointing as each subject area had less than 15 questions. I strongly recommend taking a review course to focus more on general principles. Good luck to all!
ANP Review.......2003-05-26
This was the most frustrating review book I've ever used. The information appears to be concise, organized and complete, but the review questions and answers leave a lot to be desired. In one section, 10 questions were left unanswered. In several others, answers were there, but didn't match the questions (in numerical order). Many times the answer was written correctly but aligned with the wrong letter. The CD ROM was good, but several answers did not jive with information given in the book. All in all, this could have been a great review book if ANYone had bothered to proof read it before going to print. Very dissapointed, and I'd like a refund.

Book Description
Published two weeks after his seventieth birthday,
Ada, or Ardor is one of Nabokov's greatest masterpieces, the glorious culmination of his career as a novelist. It tells a love story troubled by incest. But more: it is also at once a fairy tale, epic, philosophical treatise on the nature of time, parody of the history of the novel, and erotic catalogue.
Ada, or Ardor is no less than the supreme work of an imagination at white heat.
This is the first American edition to include the extensive and ingeniously sardonic appendix by the author, written under the anagrammatic pseudonym Vivian Darkbloom.
Customer Reviews:
Ada, our ardors and arbors.......2007-05-24
"Ada, or Ardor: A Family Chronicle", Nabokov's longest novel, is also, indisputably, his most involute. Without having read his entire oeuvre (nearly half-way through!) I can still assert this with confidence - and I'm sure most Nabokov fans would concur. Those who have read "Lolita" or "Pale Fire" will already be aware of the density of his writing, his penchant for allusions, puns, his rouguish tendency to deceive the reader. Some readers object to this; they like their prose "simple and sincere", easy to digest, as straightforward as possible. I would advise such readers to stay far, far away from this book.
I must concede, my first attempt wasn't a success. I got about half-way through before slamming it down in a frenzied rage (as I am wont to do). It was exhausting. "Nabokov has gone too far," I remember saying. But a few weeks later I had the strange urge to return to it, as if summoned by the characters. I'm glad I did - I'm glad they did.
Even for the Nabokov aficionado, accustomed to the density, "Ada..." proves startlingly abstruse. The first fifty pages in particular - in which he focuses on the genealogy of the family (the prefatory family tree is indispensible) and the Terra/Antiterra business - are apt to bewilder and discourage the ardent reader. It does then become less challenging, as the protagonist and "writer" of the book, Van Veen, travels to Ardis, the magnificent New England manor, where he meets and falls in love with his cousin (whom we discover, in the first chapter, is actually his sister). Their life-long love affair is persistently condemned and thwarted. But keep in mind that Nabokov himself isn't interested in condemning or advocating incest. As he said in an interview: "Actually I don't give a damn for incest one way or another. I merely like the 'bl' sound in siblings, bloom, blue, bliss, sable."
But the book is more than a 600-page cornucopia of enticing allusions and puns. It is an astonishing paean to memory, love and imagination. The prominent criticism of Nabokov's work is that he is so over-concerned with stylistics that his novels lack depth or poignancy (ugly word, but apt!). This accusation is not wholly unjust - at times he goes overboard; maybe he'd even admit that himself - but when he's at his best, Nabokov is unparalleled (well, nearly), both in emotional and aesthetic literary perfection.
I couldn't say that "Ada..." was Nabokov's greatest achievement - "Lolita" remains for me his total masterpiece - but this may well change upon rereading the book, which I most certainly will do.
Rich Characters.......2007-05-14
Lots going on here: great descriptions, complicated characters, interesting combinattion between historic and fictional period.
"by turns ecstatic and esoteric...".......2007-02-15
I haven't read Lolita, and am now somewhat mystified by my decision to begin reading Nabokov with Ada, his longest and arguably most complex work. The narrative is extraordinarily rich, not so much a generational saga (as the subtitle, "A Family Chronicle" suggests) but the measured, persistently vivacious pulse of a lifelong love affair between the novel's principal characters and narrators, Van and Ada.
Ada and Van are remarkable in their unfolding complexity, their abundances and deficiencies, their engaging humanness. Their lives are saturated with the sensual joys of sex and nature, a fullness that also includes the pleasures of language and literature. For me this is one of the most rewarding aspects of the novel, the warm embrace of the body and the mind in a celebratory vision of the world. And because the book is a memoir narrated by Van, with additions by Ada, the novel also functions as an exploration of memory, time, meaning and signifigance.
The prose is by turns ecstatic and esoteric, rapturously lucid and inscrutably convoluted. This is due, in part, to the novel and it's characters being tri-lingual, with substantial portions of dialogue written in a tumbling mixture of English, French and Russian. But the text itself is effusive and complicated, riddled with continuous verbal and thematic puns, allusions to Russian literature, ironical references and other demonstrations of cleverness, only a few of which are selectively explained (or further complicated) by 16 pages of accompanying endnotes.
Because the book is narrated by Van --"vain Van Veen"-- a certain amount of such embelishment and playful pretension is natural, even amusing. Nabokov seems to be extending his celebration of fullness through the size and complexity of the book itself. However, this tri-lingual density holds readers at a certain distance, and begins to feel more like the indulgences of a self-congratulating wordsmith than the craft of a gifted and sensitive writer. For this reader, it made for a somewhat long slog...
(3.5 stars)

Life is somewhere else .......2006-07-11
"Lolita" is Vladmir Nabokov's most famous book - but those who are able to read his "Ada or Ardor" that may not be his best. It is actually hard to pick one of them. Both novels are superbly written and unforgettable for different reasons. It seems to most readers that "Lolita" is easier to read, the plot is easier to follow and so is time and place. "Ada or Ardor" requires more attention, more ability to untie our bounds to reality and exploit an unknown world, as if life is not here, but in another place.
This place has a name, it is called Antiterra, and this is where narrative is set. `Where it is' is not the proper question - but reader should wonder what it is. And it requires quite a complex answer, that may take the whole book. Therefore, one should stop wondering and dive beneath the surface of the narrative, and get acquired with its characters. "Ada or Ardor" starts with an interesting quotation that could be from Tolstoy's "Anna Kariênina", but it is not. From the on, the narrator - and the reader, as consequence - starts to investigates the effects of memory and passion in the life of the characters - mostly Van, the main one, who falls in love with Ada, his cousin.
With "Ada or Ardor", Nabokov is dealing with the terrain where Proust is the king: memory. But in his version of a character trying to regain the lost time, Nabokov is also a master of language, narrative and effect. This novel is one of the most complex that readers can find in English - or any language, for that matter. There is a plot to follow, but it is the least important qualities when it comes to this narrative. The writer is more concerned with bringing his characters memories to life. And so he does with charm, intelligence and beauty.
Nabokov relation to the language is very peculiar. He has the ability to transform poetry into prose without making it read like pretentious. As a matter of fact, his superb language becomes vital to the narrative that unfolds slowly, on its own speed. This is when readers have to forget what they've experience with another books and let Nabokov's narrator conduce them to an unknown world, where earthy moral, judgments, feelings and relationships are not the law.
"Ada or Ardor" is more than a book, it is a complex and unforgettable reading experience. Its themes may cause strangeness, and the way Naobokov deals with them may disturb readers and leave others open-mouthed - but never indifferent. Since we are living an age where it is rare to book cause any commotion, "Ada or Ardor" stands as a unique piece that can cause the strongest feelings in its readers.

Providing a decent overview of how to construct graphical interfaces with Visual Basic 6, Sams' Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours quickly teaches the novice Visual Basic programmer how to write simple applications that work. Readers should keep in mind, though, that this book addresses Visual Basic from a beginner's perspective: you'll want another book to help you with more complicated aspects of the language.
Fortunately, the authors don't get bogged down in documenting every last menu item and button in the Visual Basic 6 environment, as do the authors of many introductory books. Rather, they explain how to write real--if simple and somewhat academic--programs. This book would be stronger if it included more material on the "Basic" portion of Visual Basic--the actual code that must be written manually when you reach the end of the visual environment's capabilities. While the authors provide plenty of information on each of the popular graphical user interface elements--list boxes, labels, and the like--they don't pay enough attention to the language that endows those components with functionality. To be fair, though, many books about visual development environments fall into this trap.
ActiveX controls, which you can create with Visual Basic 6, don't receive much space either. This is more a function of the language than of this book--no novice programmer will write controls of any consequence without first gathering some experience, certainly not in 24 hours. --David Wall

VB 6 in 24 Hours.......2007-04-10
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a great read and very informative.
Poorly written........2005-07-27
I have had good luck with this book, ONLY because I have had other programming languages. It does get into actual coding, but does little to explain how it works.
The authors experiments in the CD are quite lame. The ones that DO work off the CD offer no usefulness.
If you are good with programming already, this book will be useful if you are new to VB, cause you can figure out how to make bigger better projects. But most of what you do in VB will be of your own experimentation. Don't count on this book offering any real programs. It merely gives you the puzzle pieces, and it is up to you what you do with them.
Useless Book..Don't waste your money.......2005-05-27
A Great Introduction to VB
U Gotta be kidding me
This book SUCKS!
If you really want to waste your time reading this get it from a library

A Great Introduction to VB.......2005-05-18
At the University of Redlands, one of my biggest gripes was the use of ineffectual textbooks - the type that are better used as doorstops than for actual learning and/or reference. I had struggled with the idea of wasting money on books required for each class and tried something a bit different when I took Visual Basic 6. Instead of the required doorstop textbook, I purchased SAMS' TEACH YOURSELF VISUAL BASIC 6 IN 24 HOURS. I was very happy with that decision!
SAMS' TEACH YOURSELF VISUAL BASIC 6 IN 24 HOURS provides a good overview of Visual Basic and is definitely written for beginners. Even with this agenda, not every menu item is shown so the reader feels like an idiot. I found the answers to my questions easily and this book gave me a basic understanding of how VB works. Examples of code provided in the book teach the reader to write code rather than have him/her following along with few brain cells needed.
Towards the end of the book, space is given to "Sprucing Up Programs" and glosses over more advance techniques using VB, like ActiveX controls. In order to learn more advanced VB, a different book will be needed, as this one should be used for an overview and introduction only.
The CD that accompanies this book will give the reader practice writing code. Some of the items covered here are: Labels, buttons, text boxes, controls and properties, message boxes, output boxes, looping, dialog boxes, printing, database basics, graphic image controls, and much more.
During my Visual Basic class, my fellow students struggled using the standard text. I breezed through my assignments and tests. A few weeks into the class, one friend asked if he could look at my book. After that, copies of SAMS' TEACH YOURSELF VISUAL BASIC 6 IN 24 HOURS started showing up and the standard text soon disappeared off many desks. We all agreed it was a much better choice for our needs!
SAMS' TEACH YOURSELF VISUAL BASIC 6 IN 24 HOURS is a great beginning source and will help the novice understand the basics. It is not intended as a die-hard resource book, but an introduction into this powerful programming tool.
Absolute Crap.......2005-01-29
This book is a joke. If you want to give up learning VB OR learn VB ass-backwards way, I recommend you read this book. It'll give you a headache you won't believe.
Rather than giving you an overall viewpoint initially of what the program is about and how it works, they dive into stupid un-important specific details about what this command does and doesn't do..and even then, they don't show you how things work. Rather than explaining Global/Private procedures and overall layouts and approaches first, they lose you in this bizarre, nonsensical approach of messagebox and input box commands that mean nothing when you don't understand why they are there...
To think these people made a book and have a job in this field...how pathetic.

Wonderful translation.......2007-02-25
The language is as beautiful and as rhythmic as the original English (I'm picky about translation.) This book is a big favorite at home.
Fun book.......2005-08-31
My children enjoyed this book and it did not take to long to read. A good bedtime book.
Simple and Sweet.......2002-09-27
My son loves this book as a must read every morning when he wakes up and every night before he goes to bed. We love searching for the mouse and the flea and seeing the movement of the characters before they end up on the bed or off of it. The colors and the change from night to day are so smooth you almost dont notice it.
Good Book.......2002-07-08
Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the ýpulgaý in all of the pages.
La Casa Adormecida.......2000-04-29
The language is simple and repeptitive, making this a great book to teach Spanish in Elementary and Middle grades. Illustrations are great. It's also a good book for native speakers practicing reading. I use it as a check-out book for English as a Second Language students, to motivate literacy acquisition.
