Before their fixation on ethereal electronic music, the Furry Things were best known for their sugarcoated grunge fare. In 1996 they finally set aside the distortion pedals and crunchy pop melodies in favor of retro synthesizer lines and floating dub rhythms, with decidedly scattershot results. The group seems to finally have hit its stride on Moments Away, thanks to production assistance from former Medicine and current Amnesia frontman Brad Laner. Singer Cathy Shive's voice still sounds a little thin at points, but for the most part, the dizzying coalescence of styles is enough to justify the genre hopping. --Aidin Vaziri
