What do current and former members of Poison Idea, Heatmiser, and Sebadoh have in common? Uh, how about this: They all played, produced, or cowrote songs on this eccentric record by Cardinal. You'll find it even harder to believe after listening to the album, but indeed it's true. The core members of Cardinal, vocalist/guitarist Richard Davies and multi-instrumentalist Eric Matthews, are joined by two drummer/producers--Thee Slayer Hippie from Poison Idea and Tony Lash from Heatmiser--on their debut CD. Oh yeah, and Sebadoh drummer Bob Fay, who played on Cardinal's first 7-inch, cowrote the song "Tough Guy Tactics."
If you think the aforementioned elements might provide some sort of musical reference point, you're wrong. This record is a truly unique, odd piece of pop. There are moments where Sebadoh-like harmonies emerge from behind puffy clouds of piano discourse and brassy trumpet and trombone swirls. Vocals and generally sparse music reveal the kind of stiff, earnest pop the two gentlemen on the cover of the disc seem quite capable of making. Imagine Syd Barrett, had he not discovered the joys of bathing in LSD. --Adem Tepedelen
