Bringing Home the Last Great Strike

Sometimes an album sets it whole tone within the first few seconds. Pinetop Seven's third release is such an album, coming to life with a slowly approaching cloud of lush melancholy. The sad clarinets and even sadder bells don't offer much hope and, like the finer albums by American Music Club and Black Heart Procession, provide a steam rush of catharsis for the emotionally resigned. Bringing Home the Last Great Strike revels in its rustic sighing, sticking mainly to traditional country instrumentation along with horns and woodwinds. It's country music in the same way that Lambchop is, not in execution but in spirit. Frontman Darren Richard's high, lonesome wails fall between his verses of discomfort and confusion; when he signs lines such as "Are you alone or cold or missing us? / And did it hurt when you died?" it's exotic and chilling. "wrenching, haunted indefinable music. Surprises linger around every one of its dimly lit corners."
