Despite the energetic efforts of a few long-gone cow-punk bands and more recent modern-day outlaws such as Steve Earle, the once muscular subgenre known as country-rock has been plagued by tepid Eagles reunions or consigned to the dustbin of history. The Hombres seem to have sidestepped those pitfalls on this debut album, as they hearken back to a convincing, well-crafted sound that revolves loosely around the Byrds/Gram Parsons/New Riders axis of 1971. This is the West Coast soundout of Long Island, mind you--as conjured by the trio of club vets Michael Meehan, Paul Schmitz, and Russ Seeger, powered by legendary Band drummer Levon Helm, and as decorated on the mournful "Saint Estephe" and the ballad "Swoon" by the distinctive pedal steel of the New Riders' own Buddy Cage. Their music leans on sweaty roadhouse boogies like "It's Alright Norma," but leaves plenty of room for Tex-Mex influences--and, crucially, the songwriting instincts of its three mainstays. Meehan in particular seems to have smartly studied Warren Zevon for both his shadowy viewpoint and vocal edge. Redemption provides a friendly reminder that country roots honor no state lines. --Jerry McCulley
