Managed by the same impresario, who handles the Spice Girls, Jimmy Ray looks like James Dean without the nerve. His love for pompadours doesn't stop there since his music emulates Elvis Presley, Brian Setzer (Stray Cats), and Vanilla Ice. The insistently catchy "Are You Jimmy Ray?" is the most successful of this approach, since when it comes to product placement not many publicity scams can come close to repeating your name 9,000 times over a drilling beat. Even M.C. Hammer had to occasionally slow down and tell people to stop. --Rob O'Connor

People
With his snaky physique, retro pompadour and rockabilly-punk demeanor, 22-year-old British newcomer Jimmy Ray exudes the sort of animal magnetism that has been a pop rarity lately.... [T]he beat-heavy rockabilly-tinged likes of ... Jimmy Ray's debut album ... is fast-food entertainment at best. Humming along is a cinch....
