It's reasonable to wonder, what with all the Mekons, Waco Brothers, and Pine Valley Cosmonauts albums available, whether the world needs more Jon Langford. Technically speaking, perhaps not; but consider that without him, life would be a little more comfortable for uncritical consumers, politicians, and pop stars--and significantly more boring for the rest of us. This disc adds the Sadies, an electrifying bar band whose albums don't always capture the group's live lightning in a studio bottle. Happily, all parties bring out the best in each other. Langford handles the lead vocals, and his tart tongue is in top form. Behind him, Telecaster masters Dallas and Travis Good and the hard-swinging rhythm section of Mike Belitsky and Sean Dean bound blithely across genres and generations. Highlights include "American Pageant," which rides a muddy Brit-invasion riff; "Solitaire Song," with its steel licks strapped to a Buddy Holly beat; and "Drugstore", which starts out as a simple strummer and winds up as psychedelic tonk. --Anders Smith Lindall
