Superstar Hits is an excellent testament to Disney's skill at corralling major talent, even if it's heavy on the Phil Collins. Three of 17 tracks (all from Disney films) belong to the "Sussudio" crooner. Nevertheless, this is the rare collection that will compel the light-hearted and the leaky-hearted to come together, and the songs cut through genre and generational boundaries more convincingly than the label's other stabs at crowd pleasers. If Peabo Bryson's gargantuan vocals in leadoff track "Beauty and the Beast" seem overly melting, for instance, Sting shores them up minutes later with the touching, but not overly tender, "My Funny Friend & Me." Likewise, after Christina Aguilera exercises her diva's right to vamp it up on "Reflection," Lyle Lovett sweeps away the schmaltz with his regular-guy rendition of "You've Got a Friend in Me." Billy Crystal leaves a little something to be desired vocally with his "If I Didn't Have You," but look no further than Bonnie Raitt, who arrives two songs later, to rescue him with the gorgeousness of her ballad "Will the Sun Ever Shine Again." Whether you know the songs, or the films they come from, doesn't matter; enjoyment of this disc is a circle of life thing. Tina Turner puts it best on track nine: "The music lives in you." --Tammy La Gorce
