VH1: The Best of Where Are They Now
Editorial Reviews

The liner notes claim that these tracks are an "integral part of any respectable music aficionado's collection," but most of us would be hard-pressed to find a copy of Kim Carnes's No. 1 1981 single "Bette Davis Eyes" or Mr. Mister's "Kyrie" (No. 1 in 1986) still gathering dust in the cabinet. Along with the rest of your vinyl, you probably threw out many of the albums on which these songs were found, and some others (the Alarm, Bow Wow Wow) barely registered on the charts in the first place--which is what makes this compilation so essential for a teenager of the '80s. The usual suspects are almost entirely absent (read: no Duran Duran), and in their places are Adam Ant, the English Beat, and Big Country. And kudos to the compilation producers for remembering to include Dream Academy's gorgeous and evocative "Life in a Northern Town"--a song that makes Where Are They Now? worthy of purchase all on its own. --Heidi Sherman
