Farther Along: Best Of The Flying Burrito Brothers

The beauty of this retrospective of the Gram Parsons-Chris Hillman-led version of the seminal country-rock band is that it includes the group's masterwork almost in its entirety. Indeed, 9 of the 11 tracks from the group's classic 1969 debut, The Gilded Palace of Sin, appear on this 21-song overview of the group's early crest. With a foundation built on the very recordings that, along with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo (another LP largely shaped by Parsons and Hillman), are the source of country-rock and its alt-country offspring, Farther Along is a banner anthology. Beyond the Gilded likes of "Wheels," "Sin City," and "Hot Burrito #1," however, Farther Along is generously fleshed out with selections from Parsons's second and final (and disappointing) FBB LP, Burrito Deluxe, and a couple of oddities in covers of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" and Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." --Steven Stolder
