Rescue Through Tomahawk plays like gimmick-free active rock of a variety that bands from Led Zeppelin to Crazy Horse might endorsethe common thread being a certain heaviness of spirit and a whole lot of thrashing. But raging guitars account for only half of what's great about this 10-song ride. Front man Imaad Wasif, flanked by former Sebadoh bassist Russ Pollard and drummer Lesley Ishino, radiates the kind of rock-god churlishness and heat not seen since Trent Reznor railed against likability more than a decade ago, and he's gifted with a voice that channels everybody from Jim Morrison on stormier tracks ("Surrender") to Morrissey on poutier ones ("The Light"). All this is wrapped in a rather theatrical bowthink My Chemical Romance's noirish material minus the emo whinebut that you can take or leave. Where Rescue Through Tomahawk earns its wampum is on the strength of its outsize, thrillingly menacing sound.-Tammy La Gorce
Product Description
Alaska! is singer/guitarist Imaad Wasif (lowercase 1993-2000), bassist/backing vocalist Russ Pollard (Sebadoh 1997-2000), and drummer Lesley Ishino (Red Aunts 1990-1998). On their second album, the trio takes the elements of harmony, discord, and beauty that are integral to the songs and evolves them into a thrashing beat. "Rescue" breathes a sound that is pure and heavy. As a whole, it's a twisted opera of confessions and the seeking of truths. The songs weave to form the story of an undying battle; of going over the edge and searching for a way back. But there is no going back. You can only go forward into a new unknown. A lovesick letter written from the point of no return.
