Poi Dog Pondering have survived numerous lineup changes (Frank Orrall is the only constant member), geographical relocations (Hawaii to Austin, Texas, to Chicago), and musical shifts (their quirky folk-rock has added world rhythms, hip-hop beats, and a variety of instrumentation that an 11 piece band suggests). Natural Thing is their sixth album and emphasizes enough of a R&B groove to draw comparisons to the freewheeling spirit of Sly and the Family Stone, with every member stepping up to provide a track's special moment. The title cut trades vocals, speaks of "love and devotion," and juxtaposes a laid-back soul groove with a hippie flute. This eclecticism allows the band to vamp in any chosen direction. "Diva (Live at the House of Sound)" moves the band into the techno scene, meshing ambient tones and quick-stepping pulses with the natural sounds of piano. "Berry" adds rap to the mix. This band likes to explore its many options. --Rob O'Connor
