One of the best things that can be said about the debut album by Krist Novoselic's new group is that it's not a Foo Fighters record. Unlike his former bandmate Dave Grohl, Novoselic is taking real chances, directing the spotlight on to singer Yva Las Vegas (a South American Joan Jett); varying the style from straightforward rock to spoofy country to lounge (check out "La Vida," which features guest trumpet by Herb Alpert), and generally making music that defies easy categorization. It's a fun, quirky album that harks back to the smaller, simpler days of the indie-rock '80s-back before Novoselic's old band helped to change the world--for better or worse. --Jim Derogatis
