Paul Simon's rich, 1986 South African-rooted Grammy triumph Graceland and its 1990 Brazilian steeped follow-up are but the most obvious examples of his restless, inquisitive muse. This boxed anthology of the nine solo studio albums the veteran singer-songwriter released between dissolving his epochal partnership with Art Garfunkel and 2000 ably underscores the long-term pursuit of those eclectic tastes. While his solo debut and sophomore album delivered hits ("Mother and Child Reunion," "Me and Julio," "Kodachrome") that could have just as easily passed as fodder for Simon & Garfunkel, they also delved deeper into black American roots music via tracks like "Tenderness" and "Loves Me Like a Rock." For the Grammy winning Still Crazy After All These Years, Simon arguably went both backwards (reuniting with Garfunkel on "My Little Town") and forward, infusing his music with the looser, more jazz-influenced approach that would also characterize the songs from his misfired Hollywood conceit, One Trick Pony, if with considerably less focus. 1983's Hearts and Bones now seems like the artistic crossroads of Simon's career; begun as an S&G reunion, Garfunkel's vocal tracks were soon after erased, eventually yielding the most personally insightful songs of Paul's career, wed to a spare, modernist production that virtually guaranteed commercial disappointment. It's introspective, rhythmically complex artistic bookend came 17 years later, closing out a half-century during which Simon had firmly established himself as one of America's most consistently challenging singer-songwriters. Digitally remastered, each of the albums slipcased together here contain several bonus demos and outtakes; culled together, they're essentially an additional double-album's worth of raw insight into Paul Simon's adventurous creative vision and restless musical soul. --Jerry McCulley
