Earle Leonard Nelson may well have been America's first serial killer. In the winter of 1926, he began a string of murders that spanned the U.S. and Canada, horrifying and confounding both the public and the police. Bestial tells the story of Nelson's life--from his bizarre childhood to his ignoble end--sparing no graphic detail in the process. If there is an answer to the question of why this man murdered, it is in this book somewhere. Everything about Nelson seems bizarre, from his family to his eating habits to his religious obsessions. But strangest of all was his compulsion to kill--for no imaginable reason. He killed women of all ages, from all walks of life, seemingly with no remorse.

Bestial reads like fast-paced fiction, complete with action, plot twists, suspense, and eerie foreshadowing. The book is compelling and elegantly written, and the story provides chilling insights into the motivations of a man who killed for killing's sake. --Lisa Higgins

Book Description

FROM SOCIAL OUTCAST TO NECROPHILE AND MURDERER -- HIS APPALLING CRIMES STUNNED AN ERA.

<B>San Francisco, the 1920s.</B> In an age when nightmares were relegated to the fiction of Edgar Allan Poe and distant tales of the Whitechapel murders, a real-life monster terrorized America. His acts of butchery have proved him one of history's fiercest madmen.

As an infant, Earle Leonard Nelson possessed the power to unsettle his elders. As a child he was unnaturally obsessed with the Bible; before he reached puberty, he had an insatiable, aberrant sex drive. By his teens, even Earle's own family had reason to fear him. But no one in the bone-chilling winter of 1926 could have predicted that his degeneracy would erupt in a sixteen-month frenzy of savage rape, barbaric murder, and unimaginable defilement -- deeds that would become the hallmarks of one of the most notorious fiends of the twentieth century, whose blood-lust would not be equaled until the likes of Henry Lee Lucas, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Drawing on the "gruesome, awesome, compelling reporting" (Ann Rule) that is his trademark, Harold Schechter takes a dark journey into the mind of an unrepentant sadist -- and brilliantly lays bare the myth of innocence that shrouded a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars One of true crime's best.......2007-03-30

This is one of Schechter's best, and IMHO, one of the best true crime novels I have read. It is about a murder/rapist nicknamed the Gorilla Man, who seemed to be "cursed" from birth. He was abnormal from the beginning and lived a bizarre lifestyle his whole life. Both of his parents had and died of syphillis--it makes you wonder if this diseae affected this child's brain. Even his eating habits were more than strange. He later takes to killing and raping landladys while posing as a potential or actual tenant. He manages to get married--to a woman more than 30 years older than him and proceeds to make her miserable--and scared.

This was a riveting read. I could hardly put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good One from Schechter.......2007-01-13

A very well documented account of the "Dark Strangler's" life. This book brings together everything that makes a typical great Schechter book: a very well documented research, an excellent work of putting things into perspective (history, popular culture, etc), a gripping writing style, etc.

It's true that this killer may not be the most astounding killer in history (but still... he strangled women to death and then raped their dead bodies, and afterwards he concealed them under beds, in closets, behind furnaces, etc) but this isn't a good parametre to judge by, at any rate. Sure, his modus operandi is consistently the same, but I don't think this changes anything really. Moreover, that is the killer's deeds, not the author, so it would be slightly ridiculous (perhaps even immoral) to blame Schechter for the killer's "unoriginal" acts; also, it's a bit strange a complaint to make: "I wish that killer did more gruesome things for my personal pleasure as a reader." But anyway...

Harold Schechter's work is impressive because of his documentation and the manner with which he leads the whole thing. As usual, I appreciate it very much when the author quotes newspapers and gives the reader some insight in those times. It's truly a work of History that Schechter offers us here. And that's something I really like about this author: you never fall into the merely morbid curiosity and always benefit from the historical perspective on violence in popular culture, as well as other matters worthy of one's interest.

Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Bestial Bliss.......2006-12-04

Earle Leonard Nelson had a really sucky press officer. How else to explain the sheer anonymity of this compelling thug? Known as the "Gorilla Killer" for his cruel deeds which obviously were accomplished with great strength and savagery, Nelson traveled the West Coast starting in 1926, beginning in San Francisco and working his way north, raping and murdering landladies along the way. His modus operandi was to pretend to be a prospective tenant in order to gain access to the house, and used his incredibly strong hands to strangle the poor woman to death before raping her corpse. In all, Nelson murdered more than 20 people, and his life story - the chronicle of an eccentric simpleton who grew into a monstrous married oaf - is as compelling as his crimes. Wonderful reading!

5 out of 5 stars One of his best books!.......2006-06-19

Harold Schechter writes mostly crime non-fiction and Bestial is one of his best works so far that I have read. He is very detailed and he notes every possible murder victim that comes between Earle Leonard Nelson and his victims. He was truly one of the first known serial killers. His victims were all women and some children. Schechter is right up there with Ann Rule as one of my favorite crime writers of our time. He is very detailed and offers insight into Nelson's motives as well.

      Book Description

Leonard Nelson's career as a prolific artist and influential art educator spanned more than half the twentieth century, from the thirties to the nineties, and forged lose links with the leading artists and movements of that time in American art history. Although he spent most of his life in Philadelphia, his roots were in New York, and in the works he showed in the forties and fifties at the Betty Parsons and Peridot Galleries, and at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century during the forties and fifties. They placed him at the forefront of the emerging New York Abstract Expressionist avant-garde. Nelson's artistic and cultural interests were even wider and more challenging than some of his more famous New York colleagues; in his Philadelphia studio he explored avenues as diverse as welded sculpture, incorporating scrap or found objects, and printmaking, a medium that established him among the leading innovators of the day. He also taught at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia for thirty years, retiring as professor emeritus in 1977, and concentrating on paintings that over the decades underwent a remarkable transformation.

From his pioneering, mid-century figurative studies that are as formidably primitivistic as the early works of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, or the pictographs of Adolph Gottlieb, he progressed to his luminous color-field canvases. By the sixties they had evolved into a highly original and varied color expression often in large scale that broke new ground, presaging some of the later work of Morris Louis and Larry Poons. His work was constantly evolving, in keeping with his openness to novel areas, techniques and mediums. Not long before his death, in 1993, Nelson expressed great pride in his role as an avant-garde force in art education and in his ongoing willingness to cross conventional boundaries, whether in his personal studio work, or in his interdisciplinary approaches and public projects.

Nelson left an extensive body of work in paintings and printmaking, proving how prescient his early vision and stylistic impulses have been, and what a quiet, yet formidable, force he became in the evolution of 20th-century American art.

4 out of 5 stars Great plays marred by bad editing.......2006-01-13

This anthology is a well-selected one. It has a wide range of plays of different styles, from romantic comedy to absurdist family drama to post-modern weirdness. In response to the reviewer (and many other critics) who say that this is not a distinctly Asian collection of plays, I say, that's mostly the point: what really separates an Asian-American playwright and a white playwright? Or the Asian-American experience against the Caucasian experience? Just what you see.

This anthology is proof positive that the Asian-American can and does do as much and as well as any other race. We are, in the end, all people experiencing the world through our own respective eyes. Maybe it just happens that a lot of people experience similar things.

The big problem, at least with the edition I read, is that there are numerous typographical errors. Sometimes a line is attributed to a character who shouldn't be in the scene. Some are misspelled (among the most egregiously, the name of Dwight Omata in the table of contents) and can be distracting to reading and, therefore, understanding the play. It is the only gripe that makes this product less than a perfect 5-star.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing really distinctively Asian here........2002-02-02

I could care less for any of these plays. The authors seem to try and create a new brand of Asian literature. With the plays that I've read here, I hope that won't happen. Some of them are badly written and the characters aren't all too complex. But, this book shouldn't be called "Asian American Drama." Because there isn't anything Asian about it, except that the plays were written by Asians. Aside note: David Henry Hwang writes, "Frank Chin's play The Chicken Coop Chinaman was criticized for reinforcing stereotypes of broken-English-speaking Chinatown tour guides." If you read Chickencoop Chinaman, there is no Chinatown tour guide! Anyway, If you want something distinctively Asian, you have to narrow it down somewhere. You can't make up something culturally phony like some of these authors.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, every play worth reading and producing.......1999-08-21

I am an actor, and I found this collection, just outstanding! Every play is excellent and readable even on the page. Several plays by women as well. Read and Enjoy. Then go out and put it together and act, produce and direct it! I will

        3 out of 5 stars A 3 for Effort.......2003-12-07

This is a book about Earle Leonard Nelson, a serial killer who terrorized two countries with a string of murders of women in the 20's. His nickname was the Gorilla Killer due to the way he was able to overpower grown women and handle the bodies after death. A better book about this unusual man is Harold Schechter's Bestial.

The reason that this book is even as high as an average read is because there has been very little at all written by Nelson in the past few decades. A cause celebre at the time of the crimes, his reputation has been overwhelmed by more recent killers.

The book itself, though, clearly lacks indepth research. It also has what I consider a major flaw-- making up extended conversations as well as taking us into the mind of the characters. This gives the book a novelistic feel but fails to make it seem more credible.

If you have already read Bestial I would suggest giving this book a look to see how another author handles the same material. I would definitely not suggest that the reader think this to be definitive book about the crimes of Earl Leonard Nelson.
