      Book Description

Some philosophers we read to discover the nature of the universe. Others we read to discover the nature of ourselves. In the second group, Soren Kierkegaard stands alone as a towering figure, a man who revolutionized our concept of the human condition. His insights go to the core of the dilemmas that haunt the modern mind and spirit. This clear and enlightening study provides a fascinating analysis of Kierkegaard's thinking and its practical applications. The reader comes in contact with a vision of perils and potential of individual existence that is far more profound than the shallow questions and easy answers offered by the swarm of contemporary "self-help" panaceas. The book leaves one with a realization of the vast depths that lie within us, and of the daring and determination it takes to explore them in order to become all that a human being can and should be. This edition was published in 1981 by NAL Penguin Inc.

4 out of 5 stars The ways that Kierkegaard rejected .......2006-02-16

Mullen outlines the 'false solutions' to the 'what gives life meaning' question. He goes through descriptions of how Kierkegaard rejected bourgeois morality, romantic rebellion, sexual hedonism, organized religion, ironic detachment, pure action, pure thought, pure art in the course of examining his own life. He also examines how Kierkegaard made his 'leap of faith' into the kind of passionate relation with God which constitutes for him the only true way , the only true religion.
This book provides a basic understanding of the path of Kierkegaard. It may be that I did not have the right mind- set while reading it, but I did not feel it was leading me to the depths of new revelation in regard to Kierkegaard.
For me his example is definitely in the remarkable process of self- examination and questioning he goes through. It is also in the original use of literary forms, the combination of philosophical and literary means. And it is too in the image of the lone thinker striving by himself against the world to find and define a new way for himself and for mankind. And this when rejecting the idea of a Hegelian impersonal objective answer, and exemplifying the answer found through individual quest alone.

5 out of 5 stars An Must Prerequisite for Kierkegaard's Works.......2000-09-05

As a technical person just beginning philosophy study, this book was recommended as a prerequisite. It is that and more. Very well written. John Mullen obviously knows his Kierkegaard and communicates the essence of his works very fluently and clearly. I am grateful that I was directed to this book before tackling the personal philosopher himself. This book is a road map and indispensable reference. It is not light or humorous -- in keeping with the subject matter -- but it is very engaging and readable. I do intend to re-read it to extract the finer points I missed the first time.

      5 out of 5 stars "It hurts so good . . . ".......1998-08-24

I just finished reading the book. It is still sinking in. I thought I had understood what little I had read of Kirkegaard. I know now I was seriously wrong and that I must reacquaint myself with his works and thought.

The margins of my copy (which I stole from my brother) are full of observations of relevance to my "style" of living. In one case, under the discussion of "The Group - In One Dimension," in VERY LARGE LETTERS, I wrote "OUCH! That hurts!" This is an illustration of the degree to which Mullen and his subject can pierce your armour.

While I will not agree with Kirkegaard's stance on Christianity as the only possible life of faith, I see where there is a need for "faith" in something larger than ourselves--whatever we deem that something to be--so as to round out what all too often turn out to be one dimensional existences, focused on the immediate.

After letting the book sink in some more, I intend to browse through it again . . . and to have it handy when I open Either/Or to READ it for the "first" time.

5 out of 5 stars Best introduction available Kierkegaard's thinking........1997-11-27

OK, so the book's not available. Be patient! You'll get a copy someday and find out what a great and challenging thinker Kierkegaard is. This book is extremely well written, but I'll follow in the author's footsteps and point to Kierkegaard's insights into YOU and the item of importance here. Kierkegaard asks us to look at ourselves deeply and honestly, and decide whether we can really be proud of our lives as we are living them (as Mullen puts it). This line of thinking is not "enjoyable"; it is edifying and important. In so far as Kierkegaard "makes faith possible" for us moderns, and because Mullen does such a great job, I would say the book is a challenging and joyous (joyous in the big sense of the word) enterprise. Read this book even if you think you won't like it. Were we really born just to read Tom Clancy novels?

            Book Description

Few writer-philosophers of the past have evoked as much curiosity in the twentieth century than Soren Kierkegaard. The further one probes into his thought the more his ideas prove to have relevance for the modern world and especially to Christians. Such is the case with psychology.

For Kierkegaard, the study of psychology is intrinsically linked with the task of personal becoming, reflecting his own struggle to overcome the dark and cheerless environment of his early life. His interpretive framework os consciously Christian. In his view, humankind was made for relation with God, and this recognition is basic to self-understanding. But in self-deception and rebellion against God, human beings are constantly resisting their own true happiness and fighting against their own best interests.

On this Kierkegaardian premise, C. Stephen Evans unfolds the implications and effects of this human desire for wholeness and growth of the self. This book is written "for psychologists, pastors, counselors, and ordinary people struggling to understand themselves and others."

5 out of 5 stars Great for Christian's wanting an overview.......2007-02-04

Many people into Kierkegaard are atheists. Of course, K was not. He might find the use of his works to defend that position interesting to say the least. Much of his work really is the basis for any 'Christian Psychology' with any real depth to it. K is very tough going sometimes for several resons, and many people need an overview before diging into the source material. This author does a great job in explaining K from a religous perspective. Particularly if you are a believer, this is a great place to start. Also the 'Hong' "Esential Kierkegaard" is a great anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent one- volume selection of the journals.......2006-05-18

The 'Journals' of Kierkegaard are not simply the testing - ground for many of his ideas and projects, they are the life- record which indicates his mood and feeling. He began them in 1833 when he was twenty, and wrote them to the end of his life. They served in a way as his most important and trusted friend. In them he contemplated important life- decisions. They are an important supplement to his most important works, and contain many of his most original thoughts and aphorisms.
To give a real feeling of the Journals I will quote one of the most famous passages at some length. It was written in 1843.

" . What I really need is to be clear about what I am to do, not what I must know, except in the way knowledge must precede all action. It is a question of understanding my destiny, of seeing what the Deity really wants me to do; the thing is to find a truth which is true for me, to find the idea for which I am willing to live and die. And what use here would it be if I were to discover a so-called objective truth, or if I worked my way through the philosophers' systems and were able to call them all to account on request, point out inconsistencies in every single circle? And what use here would it be to be able to work out a theory of the state, and put all the pieces from so many places into one whole, construct a world which, again, I myself did not inhabit but merely held up for others to see? What use would it be to be able to propound the meaning of Christianity, to explain many separate facts, if it had no deeper meaning for myself and for my life? "

In this passage Kierkegaard contemplates and fleshes out his own life- mission. Note how rich the passage is in the figurative 'as if 'language which so enriched his writing. Note too how the writing despite its somewhat awkward mode of motion makes definite progress towards a wise and turning- point life decision."

            5 out of 5 stars A superb one-volume distillation of Kierkegaard's journals.......2004-02-07

Along with an older and somewhat smaller one-volume edition by Alexander Dru (worth seeking out, but very difficult to find), this provides readers of Kierkegaard's works a usable collection of highlights from his massive and exceedingly important JOURNALS AND PAPERS. Although this volume runs to over 700 pages, it does not represent a tenth of the complete edition in Danish.

There are many reasons for someone to read in Kierkegaard's journals. He used his journals for dry runs for many ideas that later cropped up in his various books and discourses. He often presents these ideas in a more straightforward manner than he would in his books. But he also often writes things that he did not intend to be seen by the public in his lifetime. Make no mistake about it: Kierkegaard definitely wrote these journals with the assumption that they would later be read by others in published form. But the knowledge that this would only come after his death freed him from any form of constraint, not that even here he is terribly forthcoming.

Reading the journals is also essential because it is the only way to get a truly balanced picture of his literary career and life. For instance, the caricature of Kierkegaard is of a soul who unhappily engaged in a Quixotic battle with the Danish Lutheran church in the final years of his life. The image is of an unhappy, isolated, tormented soul who never finds his rest. In fact, from the journals we find a person who has achieved a great deal of personal peace and a quiet contentment. This cannot be drawn from the books he published in his lifetime, but only from the journals. For all these reasons, anyone interested in Kierkegaard will profit enormously from these pages.

My lone complaint is that Alastair Hannay is not the most gifted prose stylist in the world. I have read just about all his words in English (all dealing with Kierkegaard or translations of Kierkegaard), and while I have no doubt about his accuracy as a translator, I have no confidence in his literary abilities. As a result, the volume--like the other volumes he has translated for Penguin--is highly serviceable, but not something that will thrill and inspire.

I should mention that Amazon shows a Princeton University Press edition of the JOURNALS scheduled to appear in the fall of 2004. I do not know very much about this edition. I am assuming that it is a single volume edition, but I have no idea how extensive of an edition this will be. Princeton's publications of Kierkegaard's works tend to be somewhat schizophrenic. While their edition of Kierkegaard's works are likely to be the standard edition for a very long time to come, they also produce some odd collections that seem to be targeted at a more popular audience. Perhaps their edition will be scholarly (my hope). Either way, this excellent volume by Penguin will either serve if the Princeton is unhelpful, or a useful alternative if it is successful.

            5 out of 5 stars Abraham Heschel's True Passion.......2003-10-01

The book analyses the thoughts of the Kotzker Rebbe by contrasting and comparing him to the Danish theologian and philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard. Few men could ever have conceived and written such an incisive work; no one else could have approached it with such an inner feel for the Hasidic tradition and yet, with a mind open to the teachings of Christian theologians.

Every thought resonates with Heschel's major "popular" statements of religion and Jewish philosophy, "God in Search of Man', and "Man is not Alone". It is obvious from reading this work that Heschel's own philosophy drew heavily on the Kotzker Rebbe's teachings - strip away the adornments and seek the essence and truth.

It is quite unfortunate that Heschel's major work on the Kotzker was never translated from the original Yiddish. Until such translation is published, this book alone provides both an incisive look at theological radicalism and a sense of the misdirection of most modern theories of religion.

5 out of 5 stars Knowing the Kotzker Rebbe.......2000-03-29

There are a lot of books about Chasidism, but not about this interesting character. In "A Passion for Truth", Abraham Joshua Heschel shows the deep and intricate personality of one of the most significant Chasidic Rabbis: Menajem Mendl of Kotzk. One of the most important things in this book is the link that Heschel establishes between the Kotzker Rebbe and the Danish theologian Soren Kierkegaard. Throughout this amazing book, Heschel shows the semblance and differences of these two important figures of the Nineteen-century. "A Passion for Truth" is a book that everyone who wants to know about Chasidism and the Kotzker-trend system has to read.
