Good...but not great........2007-06-21

This was a very informative book. It is always hard to write a biography on such an important person, you could spend volumes writing about just one part. That being said, I feel that the latter half of Franklin's life got the short shrift, compared to the thoroughness the rest of his life recieved.

Overall, a very good book, and any novice on the founding of our country should read.

Fantastic.......2007-06-19

In my quest to read through all the important figures in American history, I had to read more about Benjamin Franklin. Who was he, really? This biography is detailed, yet has a good flow. It is not as in depth as some of the books on Adams and Hamilton, but gives you enough to chew on. This book it good for someone who loves history, or for someone who just wants to read a good book. I really enjoyed reading this book and once again learning from one of the founding fathers.

There are so many reasons to read this book, the knowledge you will gain, the history you will learn, and the entertainment it will provide. You will love it. I don't say that very often, but this book you will.

Father of self improvement.......2007-06-05

Walter Isaacson has done a great job of capturing the multi-dimensional personality of Benjamin Franklin. I was pleasantly suprised to learn of the many accomplishments, controversies, and legacies of this historic figure. Often associated with savings, insurance, and seen as the founder of the self-improvement movement, he rose from bottom, and dined with the kings - that's no small feat, and no wonder so many other great men cherished his memoirs. 'An American Life' is a captivating read, you won't regret it.

Ben Franklin: An American Life...An American Icon.........2007-06-01

I throughly enjoyed this book by Walter Isaacson. Benjamin Franklin stands out as the true embodiment of what it means to be an American. His contributions to the founding of this great country are as important as anyone's including Washington or Adams. The level of respect accorded to him by the French and English made him the perfect diplomat. But one description of Franklin will never do him justice, he has so many beyond what most people know(that guy who flew a kite). I highly recommend this enjoyable book about one of the most interesting American characters of all time. You can read other reviews to catch a glimpse of all his accomplishments or just read the book, it goes by quick. It's not all a pretty picture, you get the total man, contradictions and faults. He ostrasized his son because he was a Tory and never looked back. He also discovered the Gulf Stream. Amazing man.

"The Dialectics of Seeing" is an absolutely *superb* book -- possibly the best book on philosophy I have ever read. Not yet having read the Harvard U Press edition of the Arcades Project, I don't really have any basis for comparing the two works, but it seems to me that Buck-Morss' astonishing (incandescent) use of self-deconstructive and poetic literary techniques in this tour de force of an "invention" of the Arcades Project entitles it to rank as at least as dazzling and eye-opening (deep assumption-challenging) as anything else Benjamin himself wrote. Sources aren't important; spelling isn't important; pedantry is misleading as a criterion of value. All that matters is that the experience of reading the book be a dialectical one -- and the experience of reading *this* book *is*. An absolutely incomparable work.

I have to agree with the reader from Los Angeles, and the review of November 28, 1999. This book is a lot of fun! Yes, a peculiar judgement, I know.

I'm not usually a reader of literary scholarship and excavation. (Hey, I'm in the Army and very busy and I don't have much time to read). But there is something about this book which is fascinating and very intriguing.

Now that "The Arcades Project," Harvard Belknap Press: 1999, has just been published I have been trying to resist buying this rather expensive work. But I must say that because of this book I'm "reviewing" here by Susan Buck-Morss , I'm going to have to succumb and buy it soon.

Ok, this is not a fancy or insightful examination of the "why's" and "wherefore's" on my part. But I encourage any and all readers to trust their guts on this...what at first seem opaque and in-accessible, gradually unveils something crucial about Benjamin's project for ourselves and our cultural, our History.

I'm thinking now of what it would be like to find out that we have been missing something all along. I mean our Western Culture and its great wonders. Perhaps missing something crucial about ourselves.

Maybe this is one way to think of it, reader: and ask yourself this question perhaps. What if what has been shown to us as our history or culture, something we both admire and love, but are at times horrified by could be like a movie that holds us in its grip.

But imagine this movie has been worked on over many years, and various editors and directors have changed hands in the creation of the final, definitive print which will be shown to the rest of us.

Now, imagine that each director, based on his/her own sense of things, decided what part of the original film he might keep and which parts he'd destroy.

But some of the editors hated to let all the spliced out frames be destroyed. And put some of them away in a drawer let's say.

Its kind of like Benjamin was searching the arcades, the hidden passage-ways between buildings and looking in the drawers for the missing frames and was then trying to figure out where to splice the frames back into the original.

Now, would the reconstructed film of ourselves, our History and Culture make sense to us? If the original sequence is still inexplicable to us,or long forgotten, then what else is too late for us...amidst this century's human rubble? Maybe this is one thing to value about Susan Buck-Morss' book. Any reader, knowledgeable or not about this century's intellectual landscape, knows that there is something missing in this story about ourselves. Something more intolerable and heartbreaking than a few missing frames from a 2 hour movie. There has been a terrible human cost. We know that not all of the story has been shown. It will be terrible to forget that we have forgotten. Thus, Benjamin was trying to un-cover something we have all lost. This seems astounding in some way.

Buck-Morss is very likely the most insightful and best informed scholar writing on Benjamin (or Adorno) in English today. If there are typos, misspellings, etc., they are more a sign of the declining standards in editing, even at university presses, than any reflection on Buck-Morss' scholarship. She knows the primary and secondary literature and has clearly spent much time with Benjamin's papers and in various archives. Morevoer, having written the best book I know on the philosophical relationship between Adorno and Benjamin, she is clearly well placed to provide insightful analysis the latter's unfinished masterwork. Since the Passagen-Werk is recently available in English ("The Arcades Project," Harvard Belknap Press: 1999), one can judge for oneself the worth of Buck-Morss' reading.

The deeper flaws in this synoptic summary are suggested by the profusion of factual errors: even names are misspelled, confirming the author's overreliance on the assertions of secondary literature without more than a superficial understanding of the discursive context in which Benjamin's unfinished magnum opus was prepared. Thus the flood of footnotes, over 100 pages of annotation documenting a disappointing hesitance to form opinions based upon original research. Fortunately, Benjamin's Paris "Arcades Project" will be appearing imminently in English translation; unfortunately all the serious scholarship or reflections on this work only exists in German or French.

Beware of the translation.......2006-05-14

Harvard is doing non-German speakers a great service by compiling all of these essential essays in chronological order. I am baffled, however, that some of the translations are so inaccurate. Non-German readers should know that there are egregious errors in some of these translations, especially those by Rodney Livingstone. I have compared one of his translations closely with the original German and was shocked to find so many inaccuracies. In one sentence Livingstone translates into English the *exact* opposite of what Benjamin actually writes. He doesn't just get the wrong word (as he does elsewhere); he composes a sentence that is the precise negation of what Benjamin wrote. This is very worrisome and does not bode well for the rest of the volume. I have not closely compared the majority of the volume to the original-- I don't have the time for that. But from the little evidence I found in just a few hours it looks bad indeed.

This is a well arranged volume of the essays essential to Marxist criticism from the 1930's to the 1950's. The essayists are all critical contributions are summed-up, and their current relevance traced, in a brilliant conclusion by Frederic Jameson, perhaps the most important Marxist critic writing today. I like this volume because the choice of essays is great and the selections are placed in a chronological, point-counterpoint format so that the 'conversation' is easy to follow. The essays are mainly concerned with the realism/modernism dialectic. Lukacs lauds the realism of Balzac and Mann as the exemplary approach to historicism in the novel. Adorno posits that high modernism, though it seems apolitical, provides the most ominous image of capitalism, and that it is thus the more viable revolutionary aesthetic. The other essayists chart the space between these (seemingly) polarized perspectives and provide important insights into the more mystical (Benjamin) and pragmatic (Brecht) applications of Marxist theory. Adorno takes Benjamin to task for not thinking dialectically. And, between Brecht and Adorno, Lukacs takes a beating for his reactionary attachment to the bourgeois realist novel. But Benjamin and Lukacs are both vindicated in Jameson's balanced conclusion. This is a short but invaluable volume for anyone interested in Marxist aesthetic theory.

The Origin of German Tragic Drama is generally acknowledged as Benjamin's most sustained and original work and as one of the main sources of literary modernism in the twentieth century. It begins with a general theoretical introductions on the nature of the baroque art of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, concentrating on the peculiar stage-form of royal martyr dramas called Trauerspiel. Later, Benjamin discusses the engravings of Dürer, and the theatre of Shakespeare and Calderón. Baroque tragedy, he argues was distinguished from classical tragedy by its shift from myth into history.
