4 out of 5 stars "Great Defintion for the Existence of God".......2001-01-30

St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, philosopher, father of scholastism, and doctor of the highly-esteemed Ontological Argument has in this work (Proslogium, Monologium, Cur Deus Homo, and Reply to Gaunilo)decribed and defended the nature of the most Trascendent Being in a profound yet simplistic manner.

He begins his treatise stating that "God is greater than that of which can be conceived." While at the same time he emphasizes that we must not be intimidated by God's incomprehensiblity, but rather that we are reconciled to the Divine Knowledge by a means of simply believing in Him. Anselm quotes from (Psalms 14:1) which says that "the fool hath said in his heart, there is no God". So to Anselm the one who does not believe is the one who will never gain understanding, and to the believer, he says that, "they set straight the path to all wisdom and understanding." Thus, an incomprehensible Being, reveals what he wills to the ones who seek Him diligently. This is the scope of his work in rudiments, but Anselm expounds with clarity on each and every subject at hand that he works with. So as the reader you never feel that you are getting to little, or to much information. Also you will invariably receive new insights (which is the bread and butter of the Ontological Argument)no matter how well read and learned you are on the subject.

The introduction to this book proves itself to be invaluable by summarizing the basic philosophy of Anselm. It also contains refutations and defenses to the Ontological Argument by some of the most reknowed philosophers of all time such as Kant, Hegel, Locke, Spinoza, and Descartes', to name a few. This way you can gain a better perspective of the way you will deal with the subject matter will reading. Despite reading a few of these counter-arguments I found that none of them could add to, or take away from the sheer purity of Anslem's argument.

Deemed as the second Augustine , Anselm kept an extreme adherrence to the Holy Sriptures, the edicts promulgated by the Nicene Fathers, and an emphasis rooted deeply in the power of pure reason, which rightly has acredited him such an honorable title.

So I would strongly suggest purchasing this book. It has been a rewarding and valuable asset to have on my shelf and I hope it makes its way to yours.

      Book Description

St Anselm's surprising number of letters to women included all estates from young girls to mothers and mature wives or widows, retired women, nuns, abbesses, nobles, countesses and queens. To understand his views of, beliefs about and relationships with women, and whether he collected and edited his own correspondence is to be determined. This study argues that he did - that he both addressed real women and situations, and also represented ideals of particular types of women, of marriage, relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and students and teachers. In one sense the correspondence is an artful construct, and indeed a kind of autobiography, teaching by word and deed, by his own example, those who would come after him. It thus serves as a lens through which to discern his views of the ideal society and the roles of men and women within it. Anselm accords to women a surprising role of equality and power. His main political allies were women, and he granted the queen equality with king and archbishop. In the context of the budding twelfth-century Renaissance, Anselm sought to restore ideal models of the past, primarily St Gregory. In the process, Anselm took a major leap towards the twelfth-century attitudes of introspection, self-analysis, the discovery and valuing of the individual, and the use of logic and reason in these areas as well as in politics, law and theology. In Anselm's schema, the mother and the teacher emerge as the ultimate Handmaidens of God.

      Book Description

In the Proslogion, St. Anselm presents a philosophical argument for the existence of God. Anselm's proof, known since the time of Kant as the ontological argument for the existence of God, has played an important role in the history of philosophy and has been incorporated in various forms into the systems of Descartes, Leibniz, Hegel, and others.

Included in this edition of the Proslogion are Gaunilo's "A Reply on Behalf of the Fool" and St. Anselm's "The Author's Reply to Gaunilo." All three works are in the original Latin with English translation on facing pages. Professor Charlesworth's introduction provides a helpful discussion of the context of the Proslogion in the theological tradition and in Anselm's own thought and writing.

4 out of 5 stars For the philosophically minded.......2001-02-25

This is the work in which Anselm (a midieval church father) presents his ontological argument for the existence of God. It's one of the most debated philosophical arguments for the existence of God in history. If you're new to phiosophy, you'd better have someone you can ask about after reading this. It's really difficult to grasp.

But aside from that, Anselm has a lot of good things to say, and I found that I really liked his writing style. Whether for the sake of philosophy or theology, this is a good book.
