The British record label Fenetik was devised by parent record company Soma to explore the different strains and properties of the downbeat--actually, almost any electronic music other than house. In the process, they have proven themselves more than worthy of official offshoot status. Absorbing and mutating different elements of jazz, hip-hop, soundtrack, and disco, they have established an identity of their own. With this collection of exclusives, remixes, and previously available vinyl tracks, the full scope of their output is on display, from the scratch-and-paste hip-hop of Sundance's "Set It Straight" to the deeper, jazzier styles of Daniel Ibbotson on tracks like "Inversion" and "Winter Breaks." With both pace and mood broken up by intermittent snatches of more uptempo material, like the rolling breakbeats of STS's "Codename Renegade" and Pablo's sultry Miles Davis tribute "Reincarnation." It becomes apparent that this is indeed, as the title suggests, a recording that should be categorized less by word and more by sound. --Amazon.co.uk
