For those unwilling to travel across the world in order to hear the finest sets played by the finest DJs in the finest clubs, the Global Underground series proves to be a godsend. Less concerned with forcing as many chart hits into the equation than most other commercial mix CDs, Global Underground pushes the DJ to the fore. John Digweed's Hong Kong is a perfect example of the superstar-DJ effect paying off--his sleek, polished take on tech-trance isn't dictated by commercial concerns, market forces, or chart position, but simply concentrates on molding the dance floor into a pulsing, hypnotic ambience. An eight-minute reading of the Salt City Orchestra remix of Underworld's "Cups" recedes into the sparse, dark house of Madder Rose's "Overflow" (FC Kahuna remix) without even showing the join, and that's very much Digweed's style. Confident, seamless, accomplished--Hong Kong is so good it defies genre pigeonholing. --Louis Pattison, Amazon.co.uk
