About the Artist
Vanishing Peoples of the Earth is a musical entity comprised of singer/songwriter, Keisha Hutchins and drummer/producer, Doug Hirlinger. Their music consists of a unique vocal style, organic acoustic and electronic sounds, hints of drum and bass, dub, and other styles, layered on a bed of alternative hip-hop production. The music is not only influenced by both hip-hop and electronic music, but also jazz, folk, 20th Century European classical, and Indian Classical music. Keisha comes from a varied musical background with influences ranging from folk, to classical, R&B, Indian, and jazz. A graduate from Oberlin College and Conservatory of music, Keisha earned her Bachelor's in Vocal Performance. While her studies were concentrated in classical training and repertoire, Keisha sings other styles as a soloist and with groups. Over the past several years, Keisha has become involved in electronic and alternative music, particularly the fusion of electronic music with traditionally organic mediums. Doug began his music career as a drummer in St. Louis at the age of 14. Doug has continued to play professionally ever since, mostly in the world of jazz. At the same time Doug lives another life as producer in the world of hip-hop and electronic music. Over the years Doug has produced tracks under his own name as well as D-LUX, Seraphic, and presently ill Nois. VPE's story begins March 24th, 2000, in a small apartment on 125th Street in Harlem, New York, when a mutual friend brought Doug and Keisha together for a recording project. The two began writing more music together, fusing their influences to create their sound. Doug and Keisha continued to develop that sound that is Vanishing Peoples of the Earth.
