Celebrating over a decades releases with his latest, 10th, Japanese producer Nobukazu Takemura (aka Childs View) presents a summation of not only exhibited personalities playful to plaintive but also of his surroundings: Kyoto, ancient capital of Japan. Classical structuralism competes with babbling, chiming, more vivacious constructions.
While no tracks quite match the momentum of 2001s highly rhythmic Sign EP, several appropriate the crispy static-ridden clicks of Takemuras recently self-released Animate album. A lot of Takemura hallmarks are still here; the melodious crackling chords, scampering bell tones, vibraphone and repeating rhythm patterns that regularly draw Oval, Steve Reich and Mouse on Mars comparisons toward his often placid pastorals. Whats noticeably different with 10th is the increased contrast of synth-speech against organics. Anyone familiar with MacInTalk (made most notable in recent years by Radioheads OK Computer) will recognize and perhaps find some comfort in the computerized wide-eyed warbling, which adds to Takemuras most embraceable album to date.
