In the Book of Electronic Music, House was begotten from Garage. Garage was begotten from Disco. And Speed Garage, the prodigal son, returns home to the family in Speed, Volume One: Boomin' U.K. Underground Garage. Garage is characterized by vocals ranging from processed Chipmunks-esque singing to wailing female gospel, snappy little trippety-trip high-hat grooves, and muted organ punches. In fact, this disc adheres to the classic garage formula so consistently, it borders on monotony. However, since this is "speed" garage, after all, the formula is revved up with accelerated bpm's and injected with doses of jungle juice. Despite the pace, the momentum isn't multifaceted enough to sustain interest until the last track, but it will tap into the blissful memories of those who danced to the beat of the underground when it still truly was. --Beth Bessmer
