Product Description

The ability to read law well is a critical, indispensable skill that can make or break the academic career of any aspiring lawyer. Fortunately, the ability to read law well (quickly and accurately) is a skill that can be acquired through knowledge and practice. The sooner the student masters these skills, the greater the rewards. Using seven specific reading strategies, reinforced with hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter, this book shows students how they can read law efficiently, effectively, powerfully, and confidently. Reading Like a Lawyer is divided into 3 parts: * Part I introduces the reader to the fundamentals of legal reasoning upon which law-based reading builds; * Part II introduces the reader to concrete strategies for reading effectively in law school; * and Part III teaches strategies for reading law outside of the law school context.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2006-07-28

I may not be the most unbiased reviewer (I want to UNC Law and know Ruth well) but this is one of the best, if not THE best, book to help law students get through their first days of law school. I use the book myself (I also teach law) and it has the best skill-building exercises I have used. As a legal writing collegue of mine said, "Ruth should walk around with a tiara all day--she really is the queen of legal writing!"
Incredible book. If you buy one book before starting law school to help you prepare for your first semester, this should be it.

ISBN: 0-9679303-5-9. Good luck in your quest to attain law school admission.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-07-24

Evangeline's books are must-haves for African Americans. The law school admissions process is a daunting task, but especially for African Americans since there is so much mystery surrounding what Blacks REALLY need to get into law school, how we stack up against White candidates, etc. Accordingly, Evangeline never mentions specific GPA's or LSAT scores--which can be good or bad since no one ever says exactly what Blacks need to score on the LSAT--but just encourages us all to get the best GPA we can in college and do whatever we can to ace the LSAT. Admittedly, it does bother me that none of her books actually reveal what Black students at top law schools made on the LSAT, but I understand and still believe that this is the most helpful book for African Americans on the market because it is the only one that addresses us specifically and doesn't talk to ALL applicants as if everything applies to them the exact same way. It also bothers me that she somewhat seems to assume we all attended HBCU's, are disadvantaged or lower socioeconomic--none of which I feel applies to me--but, again, her information is still helpful just the same. For those of you who long for profiles of Blacks in law school, personal statements or just more information for Blacks, visit hopespromisepublishing.com to order her latest book "Profiles & Essays of Successful African American Law School Applicants." Combined with this book, you will have just about all the ammunition you need to get yourself into the top law schools. Evangeline does it all for us and has inspired me to try my hand at a book that will illuminate many hidden mysteries for Blacks that want to get into top law schools, as well.

5 out of 5 stars You need this book.......2003-12-09

Everything you could possibly need to address for your law school application/LSAT and then some. Ms Mitchell did a wonderful job covering issues related to African Americans. Don't be intimidated by the small print. You need this book, even if you think you have prepared your applications correctly. The question is: do you have the edge?!! This book will tell you what it is and how to get it!

5 out of 5 stars Invest in Your Future.......2003-03-25

I was able to read this book and I felt compelled to share my thoughts with others. I just went through the law school admissions process and without this book I don't know how I would have been able to do it.

Catered to addressing the issues that specifically affect African Americans applicants, this book shows tactics that will show any applicant how to piece together their application and portray himself or herself as the ultimate law school candidate. The book also provides a step by step guide through each part of the application process.

This book written for African-Americans by an African-American woman gives the perspective of the law school admission process from someone who has successfully been through the process.

If you want to truly ensure that your law school admissions process is a success, I HIGHLY recommend that you purchase a copy today. It is a true investment in your future. Take it from someone who has just gone through it.

Thanks to the advice in this book I have been accepted to UC Berkeley School Of Law the # 7 Law School in the country and the advice in this book will help you excel above other law school applicants just like I did.

4 out of 5 stars A few hundred things you need to prepare for law school.......2003-01-02

Evangeline Mitchell, in her book The African American Pre- Law School Advice Guide, attempts to aid the African American future law student through the hoops of preparing for law school. In this four hundred page comprehensive guide, she covers information from a student's motivation to enter into law school to different truths about law school.

Beginning with her personal experience, Ms. Mitchell gives testimony to the difficulty of law school and the necessity of this guide especially for African Americans. Brick by brick she constructs the detailed steps from the question "Do you really want to Go to Law School?, to an appendix that includes other references, Black Law school profiles, needed checklists, and more.

As a person who considered law after receiving my degree, I picked this text up with anticipated interest. Initially intimidated by its many pages and small font I was impressed with the enormous amount of information. Ms. Mitchell wonderfully anticipated that reaction and created a "straight out" outline designed for easier reading. This outline lays out the main points of each chapter so that the reader can utilize this guide as a reference guide

Ms. Mitchell's organization of this book is probably the most impressive thing about the book. As stated before the outline is a definite plus and the appendix was full of such great information that realistically it could have been a book unto itself. Although there are testaments of its success included in the book, Ms. Mitchell does include a disclaimer that everyone's experience will be varied and this book was designed simply as an aide. However I cannot imagine how a guide this well put together could be anything but helpful.

    Book Description

Each year, law schools graduate more students than there are practicing lawyers. Why? Because most prospective students have unrealistic expectations and preconceived notions of what law school and the legal profession are really all about. Many enter law school expecting wealth, prestige or the exciting lives of the fictitious attorneys on Law and Order and The Practice without ever considering the very real pressure, competition, workload and commitment involved. This book definitively shatters the myths and hype surrounding law school and the practice of law by educating the reader about the actual challenges and realities encountered.

This insightful and often humorous guide encourages prospective students to take personal inventories of themselves in order to decide prior to entering law school whether their expectations about being able to meet the challenges are realistic. The reader is taken on a guided tour through the hallowed halls of legal indoctrination, from the decision-making process through all of the unexpected pitfalls and stresses of law-school life. This book fills in the gaps about the state of mind that is required for success in law school. It also allows the reader the opportunity to see things in terms that are not only coherent, but also enjoyable. While it is extremely informative, it is light and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book & Karl Hungus sounds like an Aruba Sympathizer .......2007-01-23

"Law School 101" is the bible for anyone that wants to enter the field of law. R. Stephanie Good is a New York Times best selling author,
and also co-authored "Aruba. After reading Karl Hungus's review, I realized that he is most likely the guy
that did the same thing on the "Aruba" book. Karl gave it away when he supposedly
analyzed the "Aruba" book in the "Law School 101" comment. Karl stay in Aruba and we will keep boycotting your country. Never knew there was an Ohio, Aruba. LOL

Anyone wanting a book to inform and motivate your career should read "Law School 101"

1 out of 5 stars Author dishonestly reviews self on Amazon, spams prelaw message boards.......2007-01-13

I would be very suspicious of this book and its author. There are many things you should consider before you buy this book. First, all of the people who gave this book 5 stars (I think at least, look for yourself), have reviewed exactly two books--this book and a stupid looking book about Natalie Holloway. Each reviewer gave both books 5 stars, and both were written by the author of this book. That should make you suspect that they're either fake accounts made by the author (really slimy) or real accounts made by her friends (still really slimy). Also, the the author of the book has been suspected of spamming ads for her book on prelawdiscussion.org pretending to be a satisifed reader. I'll never give this tool another dime. Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks so much!.......2006-07-25

I love the way this book guided me through law school this year. My first year was hell and I found this book and made a huge turn around. It was easy reading and enjoyable, but it was also so informative that my second year was much easier to deal with. I have so many tools now to get me through the toughest things, like communicating in class, taking exams, and even just getting through the day to day stress that all of my friends and I have had to live with. I am focusing on criminal law courses and I really love being there now. Law school is nothing like college and we didn't know that until we got there. If I had it to do over again, I would have found this book and read it before I started. It really is the best one out there. Thanks so much to the author for finally telling it like it is!

5 out of 5 stars Got by with a little help from my friends!.......2006-07-02

This book was being carried around by just about everyone I knew this year. Word got around that it was the first real survival guide to law school. I had read some of the other books and they didn't have the same real life struggles and stories that this one does. I felt like it was written about me and because of that, I was able to follow it and learn how to make law school an incredible experience. Thanks to the author for throwing a lifesaver into the sea of muck and mire!

    5 out of 5 stars What a Great Help!.......2006-05-21

I bought the book for my brother who was not too happy with his decision to go to law school. He had started his first year and was really struggling. He hasn't stopped thanking me. He just finished the year out and he did very well. He said the book saved him and now he loves law school, because the book made him look at the situation realistically and helped him stay focused instead of letting the pressure get the best of him.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Good Information.......2003-02-08

I have read a number of "pre-law" primers and this one really stands out. It's strength is it's unique approach: the author paints the "reality" picture and attempts to dissuade potential law students from taking the leap unless they are extraordinarily committed. This reality-check approach makes this book stand out from nearly all books of the genre.

On the negative side, the book is a bit short -- it limits its scope to the "why apply" up through the actual application process, but doesn't discuss financial aid, how to prepare briefs and outlines, etc. Additionally, the author's humor is often funny, but the schmaltzy Yiddish clichés are a bit overwrought.

Bottom line: If you are considering applying to law school, I encourage you to read this book FIRST. If you still want to go to law school, then I would recommend reading additional primers to learn the entire scope of preparing for law school.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2002-08-15

This book is a fantastic resource to those of us who are interested in a career in law. It explains the many facets of law that you can delve into and removes many misconceptions and illusions that most people have about law school. Much of it appears to be geared towards scaring you out of law school, but the advice is sound and does a good job at making sure that this is a decision you truly want to make. I would recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in law school.

5 out of 5 stars Please read this book.......2002-03-07

This is a thoughtful book that every potential law school applicant should read. As a law student, I was stunned by how few (and I mean FEW) people had put any thought at all into their decision to attend. I left my law practice to retain my sanity. For what it's worth, I urge anyone thinking of going to law school to read this book very carefully. There are very good reasons for becoming a lawyer, though making a lot of money is not one of them. Law school isn't that hard (try medical school . . .), but being a lawyer is very demanding indeed. It takes the right kind of person, and the right kind of motivation, to make it worthwhile. This book is an excellent start to deciding if you're one of those people.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Read - Very Informative and Practical.......2001-06-14

I'm 41 and seriously considering law school. This book was very useful in figuring out what qualities make a good law student and lawyer, the types of work available in lawyering, and practical tips for admissions. I read this in one sitting, had borrowed it from the library, and am considering purchasing. Highly recommend to someone wondering whether to pursue that law degree. Reading it was as painless as a conversation with a friend.

5 out of 5 stars It made a big impact on the course of my life . . ........2001-01-17

Before reading Ron Coleman's pre-law companion, I was keen on going to law school right after completing my undergraduate degree.

However, through the exercise of reading Coleman's pre-law companion, the reader is forced to question why (s)he wants to go to law school, if indeed (s)he would be happy being a lawyer, and if there aren't any alternatives/paths (s)he would like to pursue before going to law school since realistically, there would be no time for such pursuits afterwards. Well, this last point really hit home for me. I often debated whether I should pursue graduate school in computer science, and Coleman's pre-law companion motivated me to explore this avenue further.

Well, Coleman's advice could not have been better (as well as more timely). Now I won't ever think back and ask myself, why didn't I seriously pursue graduate school in computer science. And if I do end up at law school, I know I'll be better prepared and more certain about being a lawyer.

I thought Ron Coleman's pre-law companion was so appropriate and helpful that I left it with the pre-law advisor at my undergraduate institution. I sincerely hope that others will benefit from it as much as I did. By the way, if in fact you are extremely keen on going to law school, Coleman also offers excellent advice on how to strengthen your application as well as what to realistically expect while going through the entire application process.

This is my second review of Coleman's book: the first one reflects my mindset prior to making my decision to put off law school and this one reflects my mindset afterwards.

The professed relationship between law and the state should be amended according to socialism's demise. However, the growth of the state in the US is paradoxically on the rise. Law schools need to stress economics and espouse the virtues of the free market. They also need to instruct students in the benefits of limited government. Students should be instructed to read the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Federalist Papers to become well versed in constitutional law.

Citation Details
