Takes me through the process step bz step, better than a text book, and I don't have to read from cover to cover to get the information that I need.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for Inventors and Attorneys.......2007-06-03

I bought this book because a number of my clients that I respect owned the book and as a result they were knowledgeable and helpful in the filing process. While I cannot recommend that an inventor substitute this book in place of a patent attorney, I believe the content, the well-organized format, and unabiguous explanation of a complex process and product are well presented by this author. An informed client should not be viewed as a threat to a competent attorney but rather as an assest and means for obtaining the best possible product for the client. This book delivers the basics and more. I am recommending it to all my new clients. Kudos to Mr. Pressam for presenting challenging material in one easy to read reference. ONE WARNING: patent law is constantly changing and while the universal truths are represented in this books, new legislation cannot be ignored.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-05-14

I know it's boring title for my review, but it's a great book. It came highly recommended to me by a very successful patent attorney, and it is a great book for a starting patent agent or attorney or for an inventor who wants to take a stab at patenting something on their own. I'd recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-24

David Pressman's book is the number one book ever created for resource on patenting. However it doesnt just stop there, Pressman also talks about marketing, licensing, taxes, and other important aspects in the way of product development. If you want a very complete and concise book on patenting and inventing, this is the book to get, and there is no need to ever buy any other book on this matter, as he explains everything you will ever need to know.

Book Description

Having the great idea, creating the magnificent work of art, or coming up with the next fad is only the first step to cashing in on your creativity and hard work. Next up is protecting your intellectual property.

This book is for anyone who is intrigued by those three not-so-little words: patents, copyrights, and trademarks. That means you, if <ul type="disc">

  • You’re thinking of a new concept in software, one that can revolutionize the entire manufacturing process
  • You’ve just dreamed up the latest in “latest things” </ul>

Patents, Copyrights & Trademarks For Dummies explains, in layman’s terms, the basic nature, function, and application of intellectual property (IP) rights, including how you can acquire those rights, wield them effectively against your competitors, or exploit them lucratively through licensing agreements and other rewarding adventures. This book covers all of these critical concepts, and more: <ul type="disc">

  • Working with IP professionals
  • Presenting a patent explanation
  • Determining what is copyrighted and what isn’t
  • Protecting your commercial identity
  • Inspecting the basic elements of a license
  • Determining infringement
  • Avoiding the ten worst naming blunders </ul>

You’ll be able to make informed decisions and speak confidently with the IP professionals you meet along the way. And you’ll have the tools and knowledge to take care of much of the work involved in the various research and registration processes.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-03-29

When I received this book I was blown away by how much useful information it contained. It was easy to read and understand, has quick references that pertain to your subject or you can skip to something more applicable, and was filled with up-to-date information on how to obtain a patent. A great resource!

4 out of 5 stars Great Information for Business Beginners.......2007-03-09

When you think of a product you may be under the impression that I need to patent my invention, but don't have to do anything else. Nothing can be further from the truth. Henri Charmasson spells out clearly in this well written, humorous book how one must wisely go out and protect their intellectual property. He cleverly steers you through the unfriendly and confusing halls of the USPTO - the Patent and Trademark office, and guides you to seeking out the advice of an IP professional, (namely a patent attorney). It is a must read for new business owners, and many established businesses can use the help as well. But after going through the book, you will learn one thing - "Do not to go about patenting and Trademarking by yourself. Get a professional to help you."

    5 out of 5 stars Great entry-level book.......2006-06-21

I'm in legal with an IP background and this book is a great IP primer - I was pleasantly surprised by the depth. 'Dummies' is a misnomer as it provides entry-level to intermediate coverage.

Richard is a very well known authority among those of us who are involved in the technology commercialization industry. As a technology commercialization business coach, I hear regularly that Richard's advice in his books is extremely helpful in the most important areas of their work. You can count on the validity of Richard's information...he's been in the trenches and around technology commercialization for many years.

If you want to be successful in commercializing technology get Richard's books, study them and put his advice and suggestions into practice.

I'm just through a couple of selected chapters, but I am certain that this book will provide me with an amazing outlook. It's very rounded, and includes a vast amount of information about licencing strategy, along with everything else. I suggest looking at the available images for the index (link to it somewhere on this page) and checking them out. Good stuff.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2005-09-20

Dr. Razgaitis has achieved an excellent job in illustrating most types of market-practiced methods in the valuation & pricing of tech-based intellectual property. He has done it not just in a coherent manner, but also with a touch of humourous & philosophical elements, which makes the book a surprisingly enjoyable read. Despite the fact that each valuation methods has different, or even diverse, characteristics, Dr. Razgaitis managed to clearly present how each method can be practically applied in various situations, and how these methods can be jointly applied to solve business problems. He has skillfully provided knowledge & guidelines for readers to come up with their own judgement regarding what methods to be applied in various real-world situations, rather than promoting a particular method as the 'silver bullet', like some other authors may attempt to do; this is refreshing & pragmatic as technology valuation is both art & science. The references of the book are also highly valuable, as they provides good pointers to resources that would enable readers to practice the methods.

5 out of 5 stars Some thoughts from a competing author.......2003-06-24

Dr. Razgaitis has tackled an area that contains the most difficult question facing professionals and intellectual property owners - how to value and price embryonic technology.

In recent years many have attempted to educate us on the subject of valuing intellectual property. Complex financial theories and spread-sheet models emerged, especially during the e-business bubble as some strove to explain the unexplainable valuations of enterprises whose only assets were intangible. Dr. Razgaitis obviously knows and understands the theories, but doesn't let the reader escape into flights of fancy, instead bringing one back to earth gently, sometimes with humor, sometimes with real-life anecdotes.

This book allows the reader to seek information to a depth that he or she wishes. As an example, the Monte Carlo technique is presented in all its complexity for those willing and able to study it. At the same time, mathematically challenged readers can still come away with an understanding of what is going on. The author is skilled in clearly explaining complexities and the many well designed charts and tables greatly assist the reader.

These are just some of the features that set this book apart and give it a strong practical value to all of those who create and exploit technology assets, and to those who advise them. Anyone in those roles should have this book within easy reach.

4 out of 5 stars good book for chapman students.......2007-05-15

This is a good book if you are taking Patent Law at Chapman. It outlines various principals very well. It is helpful for various assignments. The one small thing it is lacking though, is how to actually write the patent. You are going to have to use the text book for that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Focused, Up-to-Date.......2007-03-21

This book is a great find--everything you wanted or needed to know about patent law and procedure, in a nutshell (even if it doesn't come from O'Reilly). Well organized, succinct, but thorough in its coverage of the issues and its explanations of their significance. Quite up-to-date, also, although there may have been a little rush to publish (a few passages could have been edited, but strictly to improve their elegance of expression.)
I look forward eagerly to more books from the publisher in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Yeah, its written for law students........2005-12-01

It's a hornbook, so you kinda gotta see that coming.

If you are taking patent law, you should get this book, it is great.
Thomas also co-authored my casebook, "Cases and Materials on Patent Law" by Adelman, et al.
This hornbook roughly tracks the casebook.
I really enjoy his concise and down-to-earth explanations.
This hornbook contains case summaries of most of the important patent law cases.

4 out of 5 stars Principles Of Patent Law (Hornbook Series).......2005-04-09

More in depth than David Pressman's "Patent It Yourself". It's written for law students, and may be too detailed for some, and lack info for others.

Landis on Mechanics of Patent Claim Drafting gives you the very latest word on patent claim drafting, including a new sample exercise for drafting business method claims. Youll learn new ways to deal with claims that involve numerical ranges -- how to understand the different treatments of preamble language, including the CAFCs Catalina Marketing guidelines -- how the CAFC treated the unusual Markush grouping in the Abbott Laboratories case -- how the CAFC interprets "substantially", "essentially", "similar", and other words of approximation, and why "about" has been held not to be per se indefinite -- why not only "more" and "less" but also "rich" and "high" are comparative words -- how PTO Utility Examination Guidelines address the issue of utility standards for gene and gene fragment patents -- and how new case law affects means or step clauses, alternative expressions, and product-by-process claims.

      5 out of 5 stars How-to reference.......2006-07-07

Filing a patent application comprises essentially three parts; writing the disclosure and drawings, drafting the claims, and filing the required work and fees with the Patent Office (which includes dealing with the office actions, if any). This book focuses exclusively on the second of these three parts, writing the claims. The claims are the legal heart of the patent, since they will define exactly what is, and what is not, covered by the patent; the application will be rejected if the claims are too broad, or not supported, or fail to be specific in pointing out the invention; on the other hand, the patent will be useless if the claims are insufficiently inclusive, and a product can bypass the detailed claimed invention. This book covers the details of exactly how to write a good patent claim, that will satisfy the requirements of the U.S. Patent office, describe the invention clearly and distinctly point out the novel features, and cover the invention sufficiently to stand up in court. It is the classic how-to reference for the practicing patent agent or lawyer.

      Book Description

Complete strategy guide for prosecuting patents-and overcoming rejections.

Overcome adverse actions, objections, or final rejection of your patent application with this complete strategy guide.

Patent Prosecution: Law, Practice, and Procedure, is the new title of Patent Prosecution: Practice and Procedure Before the U.S. Patent Office. This new Fourth Edition is the same indispensable treatise written by nationally known and respected author, Irah H. Donner. The new title reflects the treatise's decade-long transition from a purely prosecution-oriented legal reference to a broader resource that is equally strong in its analysis of patent case law, in an era when even subtle distinctions by the courts can mean the difference between success and failure in a patent infringement challenge. The Fourth Edition of Mr. Donner's book provides both the guidance attorneys need to prosecute strong patents before the PTO and the analysis litigators will use to track and understand how the courts interpret patent claims at trial.

Patent Prosecution: Law, Practice, and Procedure, is the only source that gives you an element-by-element analysis of the substantive areas of patent law that form the basis of common rejections and objections you get from the U.S. Patent Office. The new Fourth Edition also provides guidance regarding a variety of substantive areas of patent law useful for litigators, such as patent claim interpretations, prosecution history estoppel issues, means-plus-function claim issues, and patent validity.

Applying years of research and practical experience, the author classifies a wide variety of Patent Office rejections and delivers proven response strategies to you, based on U.S. patent law and essential aspects of the prima facie case of unpatentability: utility, anticipation, obviousness, mathematical algorithms, business methods, priority, double patenting, enablement, best mode, and written description.

The Fourth Edition also includes a new chapter on attorney opinions, such as patentability, noninfringement, and invalidity.

The new edition of Patent Prosecution also addresses various significant changes in U.S. patent law as a result of recent decisions and statutory amendments, including:

Patent Office procedure that nonpublication request requires affirmative intent by the applicant that the application will not be the subject of a foreign application requiring 18-month publication Phillips v. AWH Corp., where the Federal Circuit will rehear en banc its earlier decision regarding the general rules for patent claim construction The Toro Company v. White Consolidated Industries, Inc., where the Federal Circuit held that the disclosure-dedication rule is a question of law to be determined by a court and not a jury, and that subjective intent by the patentee is irrelevant Campbell Plastics Engineering & Mfg., Inc. v. Brownlee, where the Federal Circuit held that Campbell Plastics failed to comply with the Federal Acquisition Regulations ("FARs") invention disclosure provisions under the Bayh-Dole Act, and therefore forfeited title to the invention Knorr-Bremse v. Dana Corp., where the Federal Circuit reversed, en banc, the long-standing precedent of drawing an adverse inference for failure to obtain or produce an exculpatory opinion of counsel Includes Case Digest in Softcover and on CD!

The accompanying Case Digest (in softcover volume and in Microsoft® Word 2000* format) gives you access to precedential language, organized by specific issue, in favor of patentability. These materials by Donner, the two volume set plus the softcover digest and CD, are the best single source of information on prosecuting a patent (trying to get a patent approved) in the U.S. that I've ever come across. I bought it hoping it would help in a particular prosecution I was involved in, and sure enough, Donner delivered. I think this set should be on the bookshelf of any patent agent or patent attorney.

I got this book when I first started working as a paralegal for a patent attorney. It gave me a great understanding of Intellectual Property. Great to learn the basics, of course there was more to learn on the job.

      Book Description

The most complete commentary available on the state of patent law.

In your office and in the courtroom—you can find analysis of every patent law decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in this single-volume treatise. The latest edition of Patents and the Federal Circuit contains the most comprehensive analysis of Federal Circuit patent cases through 2004.

This monumental reference deals with both the high profile cases and the "uncelebrated decisions" that tend to slip under the radar, and fits them all into an analytical framework that reveals their true significance. Patents and the Federal Circuit addresses ever-changing issues and developments in substantive patent law, infringement litigation, and procedure. The author distills the opinions issued by the primary source of governing law on patents, giving you convenient, one-source access to controlling case law. The material is organized in a way that is intuitively familiar to patent lawyers, so they can access the information they need quickly and easily.

The Seventh Edition of Patents and the Federal Circuit covers all Federal Circuit patent opinions reported by BNA through United States Patents Quarterly (Second), Volume 71, and any other important Federal Circuit decisions handed down through the end of the year 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Patents and the Federal Circuit.......2004-09-28

This is a great one volume treatise on Patent Law. As a summer associate, I used this book all summer for any patent law assignements. I preferred this book over Chisum b/c it was brief and gave a good overview. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best one volume treatise on patent law.......2002-10-08

This is the best one volume treatise on current patent law that's out there. I invariably look to Harmon before picking up Chisum.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for law school, but not the patent bar........2007-06-18

I read this to prep me for the patent bar exam, which was not a good choice. It's a great book for a law student trying to cram for patent law course exams, but I recommend OmniPrep for passing the patent bar exam, if that's what you're trying to do.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty decent intro book.......2007-03-12

I bought this book to get the fundamentals of the patent bar exam. That was not a wise choice, but it is still a good book for other matters such as basic patent fundamentals. I actually skimmed through much of the book picking up key terms used in it for the patent bar exam however so that was good. It is also a great intro book to understand patents, drafting them, and prosecuting them. I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for Patent Law Students, by Flavio Mota.......2006-02-09

This is a useful book because it explains patent law and patent cases. It describes the relationship between the two. Furthermore, it includes good analogies that help the reader understand the hard to grasp concepts of intellectual property law. For example, the book has a very good description of Section 103--the bulk of an introductory patent law class. So, for all of the aforementioned reasons, a patent law student will appreciate this writing.

      5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2004-04-08

I would highly recommend this book to any law student who is taking a class on patent law. Professor Mueller is an excellent writer, and she explains otherwise complex subjects in a way that is both comprehensive and easy to understand.

If you're taking a class on patent law, this book is simply indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars extremely helpful and comprehensive.......2004-04-08

I bought this book in preparation for my Patent Law exam, and it turned out to be much more helpful than my casebook, my other outlines, or anything my professor said in class. It is comprehensive, accessible, and very current. I would highly recommend this book to law students, lawyers, and others who need a well-written and well-researched introduction to the topic. It's simply the best in its field.
