Customer Reviews:
Very good content marred by poor editing.......2006-01-05
A small number of reviewers were impressed by this work and that accolade is understandable and, for the most part, well warranted. I found Mr. Stopford's book was a comprehensive and detailed discussion of the arcane field of maritime economics and finance. I believe that anyone interested in this field, particularly maritime attorneys, ship financing brokers, maritime finance department representatives, ocean carrier finance departments, and other players will find it very useful. However, I regret that I cannot give this work five stars. The volume I purchased contains far too many spelling and grammatical mistakes, no doubt due to poor editing by Routledge. These spelling and other errors are not just small mistakes that can be overlooked. There are far too many distracting errors that greatly undermine the usefulness of the book. At times, I found it very difficult to even follow the book's lessons because spelling and grammatical errors made it hard, if not impossible, to determine what lesson Mr. Stopford was trying to impart to the reader. It's a shame such a good book's lessons were marred and undermined by such shoddy editing.
The Bible of Shipping.......2005-06-23
It is the Bible of Shipping, a must for anyone interested on the Maritime World
Best book ever on Maritime Economics.......2004-03-19

Book Description
Hooked is a story about the poaching of the Patagonian toothfish (known to Americans as Chilean Sea Bass) and is built around the pursuit of the illegal fishing vessel Viarsa by an Australian patrol boat, Southern Supporter, in one of the longest pursuits in maritime history. Author G. Bruce Knecht chronicles how an obscure fish merchant in California discovered and renamed the fish, kicking off a worldwide craze for a fish no one had ever heard ofand everyone had to have. And with demand exploding, pirates were only too happy to satisfy our taste for Chilean Sea Bass. Knechtwhose previous book The Proving Ground was hailed by Walter Cronkite as a sailing masterpiece . . . a tale more thrilling than fictioncaptivates readers by deftly shifting among the storys nail-biting elements: the perilous chase at sea through frenzied winds, punishing waves, and an obstacle course of icebergs; the high-stakes environmental battle and courtroom drama; and the competitive battle among the worlds restaurants to serve the perfect, flaky, white-fleshed fish. From the worlds most treacherous waters to its most fabulous kitchens, Hooked is at once a thrilling tale and a revelatory popular history that will appeal to a diverse group of readers. Think The Hungry Ocean meets Kitchen Confidential.
Customer Reviews:
pursuing the fishers.......2007-05-25
A verty detailed account of pursuit and the frustrations that the law encompasses while trying to track international pirates. I assumed it would be, track, catch and arrest but their are so many politics involved with the apprehension of the illegal fisherman, whom once you hear their story and don't find yourself so mad at them either as they are trying to make a living. With the dolphin killing, my emotions were triggered but with the Chilean Sea bass , one really has to grasp the environmental concerns for the reasons these pirates must be controlled. Good book.

I gave this book to my husband. He enjoyed reading it as he is an avid fisherman.

BUYING WAS EASY AND DELIVERY WAS QUICK. WHATELSE CAN A CUSTOMER ASK FOR?
Hooked.......2007-01-03
It was good, but had a disappointing ending. The only downside of the book was that it had multiple stories that went back and forth each chapter. It made me not want to eat fish for a while. I recommend it to people who like to go fishing and people who eat fish but don't know much about what kind of fish they eat.

Book Description
The fifth edition of Carriage of Goods by Sea has been brought up to date with the latest judicial decisions, statutory developments and changes in shipping practice. It provides an authoritative, comprehensive and critical survey of the law relating to the carriage of goods by sea.
While dealing primarily with charterparties and bills of lading, attention is also given to new forms of documentation and problems involving through and combined transport. A separate chapter is also devoted to dispute settlement. Throughout, legal principles are examined against the background of current documentation and factors involved in the prosecution of a cargo claim, thus lending the legal analysis a useful practical orientation.
This is one of the leading authorities on this important area of international trade law, and is suitable for recommendation to students on courses on international trade law, carriage of goods by sea and maritime law. It is also a useful reference for newly qualified and trainee professionals working in legal firms, P & I clubs, shipbroking firms, cargo insurance firms and at Lloyd's. John Wilson is an active member of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton and is Emeritus Professor of Law at the university. He has lectured widely on maritime law in the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2002-04-04
There are many books available on shipping law and carriage of goods by sea, but this one explains the international treaties, causes of dispute, conflict of laws, and essential shipping documents and contracts in a way that would make it an ideal text book. The writer runs a college course in the UK and clearly has had time to develop his methodology for clear explanations.

Book Description
The delimitation of maritime zones is an important requirement for peaceful relations between neighbouring States. There are numerous examples of areas between States with opposite or adjacent coasts where sovereignty over an island or territory may not be contested but the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone is still pending. Under the Law of the Sea Convention, the delimitation of these zones shall be effected by agreement on the basis of international law. However, the Convention does not offer a definitive answer as to the methods that should be applied.
This publication includes contributions by Judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, eminent scholars and experienced practitioners. The papers deal with various aspects of maritime delimitation: the jurisprudence of international courts and tribunals and their relevance for delimitation, the impact of the Law of the Sea Convention, the role of legal practitioners and diplomatic negotiators, and delimitation under particular geological circumstances and in geographically complex regional situations. It is designed to provide insight and guidance to the complicated process of maritime delimitation.

Customer Reviews:
Needs to be updated.......2004-11-03
I didn't realize that the book was so old when I accepted Amazon's offer to bundle it with Admiralty in a Nutshell. This is a 1984 edition and, in the section I read, was really lacking some critical information. When discussion how the United States handles oil spills there is, obviously, no mention of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 - A HUGE omission. I suspect that there are other such discrepancies because of its age.

Book Description
The fourth edition of the well-respected Rules of the Road contains the latest changes to the Rules as of the date of printing. The Rules are presented in a straightforward fashion designed to be useful for all who need to learn and apply the Rules, such as recreational boaters, maritime students, and professional mariners. To achieve this, the Rules are side by side on the left-hand page and the authors' comments are on the right. Differences appear in bold type. As an aid to those professionals who will be taking the Coast Guard examinations, the book includes practice questions as well as a suggested method of study.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Side by Side Comparison.......2007-04-02
If you've ever had to study the nautical rules of the road and tried to compare the differences between the international and inland rules by reading the actual rule text, you'll appreciate this book. This is the best side by side comparison I have seen. The differences in the rules themselves are printed in bold font for easy identification. Also, there is helpful, practical insight where clarification of a rule is needed. This insight is given from court case results (helping to define what the authorities deem acceptable actions in traffic situations) and practical experience. If you want to get into the nitty gritty and enjoy reading more legalistic text, Farwell's might suit your fancy, but this book I would recommend to all mariners who are just learning the Rules for the first time and for those who just need to brush up before going back out to sea.
