4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Drawn.......2007-06-15

I found this book to be beautifully rendered with with many drawings of examples face types, features and body language gestures that were clear and easy to understand. But the descriptions were very general and didn't cover all of the variations that exist in reality. (I suppose one is supposed to take one of the authors face reading classes for more info. listed in the back of the book.) Still, it was a facinating read, and a fun topic to try among friends.

1 out of 5 stars Phrenology for the '90s.......2007-02-01

If you wish learn to identify people's personalities or how they may be feeling or may be thinking at a given moment then his book is a waste of your time and money. The ideas in this book are nothing but pseudoscientific nonsense. The text is full of glittering generalities and vague statements which nearly anyone would agree were true about them, regardless of face shape. If you wish to truly read people, your time and money would be much better spent on just about anything by Paul Ekman or any of the books by Desmond Morris on human social interaction. Avoid this book.

I am a trial lawyer with 26 yrs experience. this book is a joke. there is no science to back up his opinions, which are about as "scientific" as reading chicken guts. It's basically a rehash of the "science" of divining character from the shape of peoples skulls.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-03-19

I had the immense pleasure of having my face read today by Mr. Fulfer, and very accurately, too. If his book can teach people even a tenth of his skill, then it is valuable indeed. I plan to read my copy very carefully.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference book; Check out Rose Rosetree, too.......2003-12-30

What I like the most about Mr. Fulfer's reference book is that the information is well organized, so it is quick and easy to find the data on, say, a nose which has a bump in the middle and large square nostrils.

I have also read Rose Rosetree's "Wrinkles are God's Makeup," which focuses on personality changes which out-picture on the face over time. It is a fascinating book, though not quite as well organized as "Amazing Face Reading."

      ASIN: 1558854762

      Book Description

This collection of ten essays commemorates the 50th anniversary of an important but almost forgotten U.S. Supreme court case, Hernández v. Texas, 347 US 475 (1954), the major case involving Mexican Americans and jury selection, published just before Brown v. Board of Education in the 1954 Supreme Court reporter.

This landmark case, the first to be tried by Mexican American lawyers before the U.S. Supreme Court, held that Mexican Americans were a discrete group for purposes of applying Equal Protection. Although the case was about discriminatory state jury selection and trial practices, it has been cited for many other civil rights precedents in the intervening 50 years. Even so, it has not been given the prominence it deserves, in part because it lives in the shadow of the more compelling Brown v. Board case.

There had been earlier efforts to diversify juries, reaching back at least to the trial of Gregorio Cortez in 1901 and continuing with efforts by the legendary Oscar Zeta Acosta in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Even as recently as 2005 there has been clear evidence that Latino participation in the Texas jury system is still substantially unrepresentative of the growing population. But in a brief and shining moment in 1954, Mexican-American lawyers prevailed in a system that accorded their community no legal status and no respect. Through sheer tenacity, brilliance, and some luck, they showed that it is possible to tilt against windmills and slay the dragon.

Edited and with an introduction by University of Houston law scholar Michael A. Olivas, Colored Men and Hombres Aquí is the first full-length book on this case. This volume contains the papers presented at the Hernández at 50 conference which took place in 2004 at the University of Houston Law Center and also contains source materials, trial briefs, and a chronology of the case.

        Book Description

The authors provide a thorough review of the most common techniques used to select jurors, and a critical evaluation of the ultimate effectiveness of these methods. This critique is based upon an examination of the social science literature. Psychologists and other social scientists as well as practicing trial consultants who read the book should gain a better understanding of the current state of research relevant to scientific jury selection, and areas where new research needs to be conducted to advance the field. Attorneys who read the book should be better able to decide whether or not to hire consultants to assist in future litigation, and if so, what types of services these consultants should provide.

Wamrm, fuzzy and shallow. No real insights into how verdicts are reached or how to persuade jurors faced with difficult decisions. Dr. Gordon is more humanitarian than scientist and the book fails to provide a look at the practical ingredients jurors might use in reaching verdicts in real cases.

5 out of 5 stars An inside look at setting up jury focus groups.......2003-06-18

Within trial science circles, the name of Dr. Robert Gordon is spoken of with deep respect, even awe. Along with a handful of other visionary professionals during the early '70s, Gordon helped to invent the field of trial science research, which concerns itself with using scientific testing procedures to reliably determine how jurors are likely to feel about a court case and its key issues. The field is now booming, and hundreds of trial scientists across the country and around the world currently use the techniques and methodologies that Gordon helped to develop and perfect.

In his book "Focus Group Strategies," the Dallas-based trial scientist shows attorneys how to employ jury focus groups, jury simulations, and related scientific studies to accurately determine which biased and/or opinionated jurors to de-select during voir dire (the trial phase in which jurors are chosen for an upcoming court case); and how the findings from such research can be used to plan the most effective case presentation strategy in order to win a favorable verdict with jurors. The book serves as an easy to follow primer that instructs trial attorneys on the ABCs of setting up and conducting jury focus groups and other jury simulations.

As Gordon points out in his book, employing such litigation research is now accepted practice for nearly every major litigation dispute today, and is even becoming commonplace for the more run of the mill court cases as well. It's easy to see why: jury focus groups enable the trial attorney, prior to actual trial, to safely test-market alternative case strategies to see what will work best with jurors.

Thanks to the invaluable intelligence such professionally organized litigation research provides, the attorney can reliably determine which trial theme will resonate most strongly with the jurors. Additionally, he or she can safely predict probable jury responses to other key case presentation components, including the opening statement, closing argument, witness testimony and other evidence, the fact pattern of the case, and so on. Trial science research is like a magic crystal ball that shows how the jurors will think and - even more importantly - feel about the case.

Of course, the findings of such jury focus group research are not foolproof. But they are considerably more accurate than the methods used by attorneys prior to the development of litigation research (largely intuition and hunches) to determine what would work best in court to influence jurors. ("Scientific jury selection is only intuition made manifest," says Stephen Gillers, prominent legal commentator and vice dean at New York University School of Law.)

In "Focus Group Strategies," which was written with the assistance of his daughter, Ami Gordon, a lawyer, Gordon provides attorneys and other interested parties an interesting behind the scenes look at exactly why, how, and in what manner jury focus groups should be set up for all types of litigation disputes, including those to be determined through trial, arbitration, mediation, or other ADR (alternative dispute resolution) methods. He relates how such focus groups should be organized, where and when the sessions should be held, and most importantly, what type of targeted research goals they should be designed to achieve.

To me, a charming aspect of this book is its highly personal account of Gordon's bumpy days as a fledgling trial scientist during the early `70s, when few understood what litigation psychology was all about, or what it could accomplish.

Also interesting are the numerous colorful vignettes regarding famous trial luminaries Gordon has worked with over the years, including Texas trial masters Richard "Racehorse" Haynes and John O'Quinn. Haynes successfully represented Cullen Davis in his nationally publicized murder trial; O'Quinn was the lead lawyer in the multi-billion dollar State of Texas tobacco settlement.

As discussed, trial science research is now being routinely employed by civil and criminal lawyers for all types of cases. Indeed, this has become so much the norm that it is now somewhat unusual not to see a trial scientist sitting next to an attorney during trial. When asked to comment on the value of utilizing trial scientists for litigation disputes, one prominent New York litigator, Donald Zoeller, stated that, "It's gotten to the point where if the case is large enough, it's almost malpractice not to use them." And that's true. The attorney who proceeds to court without the benefit of litigation research is, in effect, doing his or her client a major professional disservice. It's like flying a plane at night in bad weather without radar. So where should the conscientious attorney turn in order to learn about this fascinating new field? A good place to start is by picking up a copy of "Focus Group Strategies."

I'm thoroughly pleased with it; it's quite a thick book and includes marvellous illustrations from artists around the world. The most wonderful thing is seeing the different styles that are all equally lovely, but completely original. I leave this on my coffee table for people to flip through, it's something everyone with even slightly artistic tendencies will enjoy.

            Book Description

In its roughly 25 years of existence, the trial consulting profession has grown dramatically in membership, recognition, and breadth of practice. What began as a small activist group of social scientists volunteering their expertise to assist in the defense of Vietnam War protestors has evolved into a diverse set of professionals from a range of educational and professional backgrounds. In spite of such enormous growth, the work of trial consultants has gone largely unexamined. Trial Consulting takes an in-depth look at the primary activities of trial consultants, including witness preparation, focus groups and mock trials, jury selection, change of venue surveys, and attorney presentation style. It also examines the profession's struggle to define itself, resisting certification and licensure requirements and settling instead for a set of practice standards. The authors draw upon empirical and other scholarly work in the social sciences, recommended "best practices" from trial lawyers, and the written and spoken recommendations and reflections of the trial consultants themselves. Addressing a broad spectrum of topics ranging from handwriting analysis to medical malpractice cases, they also suggest reforms for improving the profession and the efficacy of the trial consultant in the courtroom. The result is a critical analysis of what trial consulting truly adds to, and detracts from, the administration of justice. This book is an indispensable guide for practicing and aspiring trial consultants as well as the judges, attorneys, and psychologists who work with them. Trial Consulting provides a thought-provoking statement on the state of the profession, and students and professionals alike will benefit from the challenges it offers.

The authors take a critical look at the science of jury consultants in Stack and Sway. Using the techniques of modern social science, psychology, and market research, jury consultants apply sophisticated research methods to figure out the best strategies for picking and swaying a jury. This book examines whether the industry is effective and it reveals the tricks of the trade. --David Marshall Nissman, J.D.

            Book Description

A new and largely hidden profession has emerged during the past three decades. Drawing on the techniques of modern social science, psychology, and market research, its practitioners seek to remake the way we pursue justice in the United States. Jury consultants help lawyers to pick - some would say "stack" - juries predisposed to render the "right" verdict. And consultants apply sophisticated research methods to figure out the best strategies for swaying the panel. What are we to make of this new and steadily growing industry? Do the techniques work? Is this, as some critics have argued, a new form of high-tech jury-rigging, not much more acceptable than cruder forms of jury tampering? Or do the methods of jury consultants amount to little more than an extension of what attorneys have always done? This book will reveal the "tricks of the trade" and explore the many ways in which trial consultants have infiltrated the courtroom. The authors' purpose is not to launch an all-out attack on this growing industry, but rather to pull back the curtains, allowing a fair and balanced assessment of a new phenomenon in American justice.

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars New science not so new.......2005-09-26

This book, although copywrited in 2002, is already outdated. Regrettably, it also spends an inordinate number of pages touting commercial jury consulting firms, rather than providing theory, application or even advice on jury selection.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and unbiased account of jury consulting........2005-06-04

This work is a fascinating account discussing the circumstances under which jury consultants are effective. I read it to be rather unbiased. The Kressel's concentrate on the facts of prominent cases as well as the experiences of jury consultants and seasoned trial attorneys. It contains arguments from experts who disagree on the effectiveness of hiring a consultant and the prudence of paying 5 and 6 figure fees for simulated trials, witness coaching and after-trial analysis.

Since the authors do not pander to jury consultants, or to the trial attorneys who use them, I can see why this book is controversial and it may receive bad reviews from attorneys who swear by them.

I am unsure of what the attorney reviewers mean when they say that "Stack and Sway" is written by only social-scientists. Dorit Kressel (co-author) is a practicing trial attorney in NJ.

            5 out of 5 stars A well-researched guide to a controversial industry.......2002-12-06

This book wasn't written by a consultant and it isn't a cookbook on how to do jury consulting. But it is a pretty fair guide to what jury consultants and the lawyers who use them are up to. The authors claim to expose some myths about juries, consultants and lawyers. They may not convince everyone -- and they will probably anger some consultants -- but they have done their homework. The book is loaded with evidence, some of it from social scientists, some of it based on interviews with lawyers and consultants. After reading the book, however, I'm still sure whether trial consultants are a threat to our justice system or not. But I am glad I read it.

1 out of 5 stars These folks are just WRONG.......2002-11-29

Seems to be a series of anecdotes by a husband and wife team who never actually tried a jury case in their lives. "Social Scientists" and non-practitioners cannot really know the effects of jury consulting or voir dire, since social science studies are third-hand "pseudo-science guesses" at what really goes on, and whether justice is truly done. A nice book for their resume, but that's about it.

2 out of 5 stars Social Scientists Cannot Know What Trial Lawyers/Judges Do.......2002-11-29

Although well crafted, these non-practitioner social scientists have missed the boat when they accuse jury consulting of taking part in "jury rigging". Having sat as a felony Judge and jury trial lawyer for 25 years, I have personally seen how detecting unconscious or concealed biases SERVE justice, not hurt it.
"A" for effort, "D" for conclusion.
