Well, another hyped up child custody/divorce manual that has been drastically over-rated by a few readers. What caused me to give this book at three star? Well it does have plenty of content. Kind of like when you go to a book store or library. How many of the books in there are you going to want to read? Maybe ten percent of them at best. Well this book will probably have ten percent of which may be possible to use in your court cases, and actually have it become applicable and useful to the reader. Another big problem I had with it was that the suggestions and information that the book was advising were too vague for it's readers,especially those involved in a custody battle. So many things in the book were way too generalized for the reader to be able to know how to precisely use them as effective tools. In essence, kind of when you read a horoscope, it's way too generalized to even know how and what makes this work. Also the book had the usual bias slant and actually gave much more advice to women going through child custody problems than it did fathers. The book seemed to focus more on how to legally screw over the father more by the mother than visa versa. Another drawback to the book is that it is very disorganized. There is really no order to it. It would of helpful if perhaps there were a chronological order to the advice using topics and subtopics relating to how events usually occur in pre/during/post divorce. It basically is a mumble-jumble and conglomeration of patches that were inserted while editing the book that say a lot, but say nothing useful. Authority and precedence is what is needed to be established in a family court. That is what a judge wants. The court cases that are mentioned in the book are relevant to the issue being referenced therein, but rarely apply to a lot of the situations that a father is going through. There are requirements that have to be meet while using a past court case that was established as precedence to be used. The only way to get applicable court cases for precedence is to use state family law books that are found at a law library. This book would be okay for a "quick read" at a bookstore.

This was a good resource for someone going through custody battles. I would recommend it to anyone, but would also mention the fact that there were more misspelled words, typos, major lack of editing issues than any other book I've ever read. WOW. But, the content makes up for this gross neglect. Still, for the price I paid for this book, I did expect better from the editing...
10 Star Resource.......2006-12-13
Someone gave me a 1994 edition of this book at the start of my divorce and custody dispute. It was a better resource book than anything else at the Baker & Taylor Bookstore. When I found the 11th edition it was double the price of the 3rd edition and quadrupel the information. I am so greatful for the new book and it is again better than anything else available, even on Amazon. I read it for the information and because it is interesting. I appreciate seeing examples of reports and studies before I have to face them myself. Win Your Child Custody War, also helps me keep a healthy prespective on what is going on in my life because I can see what others have dealt with. I have used the letters and examples and they really made a positive difference. A great living, breathing piece of work and an outstanding reference!

I wish someone would have recommended this book at the start of my divorce and custody dispute. This book is by far the best resource book for custody disputes and surviving a divorce. At first glance one would think that it is a bit expensive. However, once you receive it you will be thankful that you did. You could combine numerous other books in this genre and they would not compare to this single book. This book goes in depth without losing the reader. You will find yourself referencing it throughout your divorce and/or custody dispute. Chapters include: 1) Strategies to win custody 2)False Allegations 3)Evidence documentation 4)Grandparents 5)Hiring a detective 6)Rights during visitation 7)Parental Alienation Syndrome 8) Conflict resolution 9)DNA Testing 10)Case Law and so much more! 640 plus pages. About Custody, and a MUST READ.......2007-01-24
I agree that this book is about dealing with a custody battle. If you have children, and are thinking about getting divorced, I recommend you read "Divorce Busters" because the custody process is truly horrible, and because there are a lot of marriages out there that could and should be saved. Unfortunately mine was not one of those, and this book has been invaluable in guiding me through the process intelligently. There are few underhanded tricks listed, which I rather approve of (although it does mention that you should interview the town's "Shark" lawyer before your husband does so that he can't hire him) Just a LOT of good advice! Read this before you choose your lawyer, and you will get a lot more bang for the considerable bucks you are likely to be investing. Read this BEFORE you leave your family home if possible! But do read it; you won't be sorry.
Very Helpful.......2005-09-12
Well written, easy to understand with loads of advice and comfort for those going through the challenges of a custody battle. The author shares some of her own experiences and leaves you with a feeling of hopeful optimism. I consider this a must-read for any parent going through a divorce. I thought that her comments on dressing for court and behavior during separation were common sense, but perhaps there are some readers who would need to understand better how their image and demeanor affect a judge's perception of them as a parent. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone trying to gain custody of their children.
What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce And Cusody.......2004-02-22
This is the most thorough and informative book on divorce issues that I have read. As a divorce attorney, I am always curious to know what other attorneys are thinking. Ms. Smith's perspective and commentary mirror much of my own experiences and conclusions. The book is easy to read and filled with relevant, realistic examples and practical advice. I highly recommend this book to both nonlawyers, who have a reason to learn about this subject and to lawyers so they can refine and expand their knowedge of the divorce process.

This book was a god send. It helped me with so many issues. I found it to be a true survival guide with advice that works. I purchased the book months ago when I was first separated. Now my ordeal is almost over but I still keep the book by my nightstand and refer to it constantly.

A Book ALL FATHERS Need to READ............2007-05-26
A++++ from beginning to end......
This book re-lit the fire that was fading out of my hope for custody and visitation due to the walls of the legal system snuffing it out after every encounter with it. Both these authors (Husband and Wife) should be recognized for presenting this priceless knowledge, honesty, and fairness this country needs in family court. I learned a lot about myself and how to better the future for all fathers. I believe honestly I am on a winning path to my children's' rights and mine as a father to be recognized. Recently I won my first hearing and now feel better prepared for the trial. I am representing myself, with confidence. Win or lose I know this book helped me emotionally, mentally, and most of all gain the knowledge to raise and provide "our" children with the rights they deserve.
Michael Brennan is my attorney..........2006-09-01
While struggling to find a decent attorney, I happened upon Michael's book in a libary. I arranged a meeting with Michael and ended up switching attorneys. I have had NO contact with my 4-year old daughter for the past seven (7) months... even with court orders for visitation. My case seems to be so complex, and unbelievable, that even attorneys such as Michael who write books on the subject find it difficult to believe. After months of trying to involve the police, DA, Attorney General of CA, and the FBI - with no success; Michael now seems to believe me and has successfully obtained an OSC forcing my wife and her attorney to explain why my daughter has been concealed. Interestingly, my case has moved from the original judge to the supervising judge on the family law panel. As the police in California will tell any father, "your rights as a father ended when your wife left and took your child." As the Attorney General's office will tell any father asking for help, "we don't even have enough resources to look for runaways...you will not find any help." The laws on the books don't matter when it comes to a mother sheltered by the corrupt CA legal system. Despite the hell I have endured, I believe in Michael's book and believe, despite my struggle, that he and his staff have the true best interest of the children in mind. The Family Law system in California is one of the state's "dirty little secrets". The mom-bias is extreme and outweighs "the best interest of the child" without the slightest consideration by accountable authorities of the facts in the matter. Read this book. Write a book. Fight for the thousands of innocent children who suffer every year from state-supported separation anxiety in California.

Very nice feel for a self published book but the scope is limited and definitely from an attorney's point of reference. The opposition in my case must have been using this book exclusively. Good to have on your divorce/child custody book shelf.
I am a woman and am going to use these tactics on my ex.......2005-12-06
I am mother of a 3-year old boy undergoing a contested custody battle in Santa Clara County, California. Santa Clara County Superior Court, and California courts in general, grow more and more biased in favor of so-called "father's rights" with each passing year. The custody evaluators who perform custody evaluations in this county (it is an exclusive club) all conspire together to promote their agenda. My son is the one who is suffering and paying the price. My intention has never been to alienate my son from having a relationship with his father, but to have Court-ordered and evaluator-approved twice-weekly overnight visitation with the father at 11 months of age, when my son had never spent a single night away from me and was still nursing, is simply put an atrocity and and abberation of justice to my son - all in the name of political correctness. My son now suffers from a speech delay which I believe has been caused or exacerbated by the stress he has been forced to endure since age 1 - all in the name of so-called 'father's rights'.
This book appears to have some excellent strategies - my ex-husband planned his moves far in advance, and was planning the divorce and strategizing with his attorney for months prior to putting his plan into action - and has been one step ahead of me for most of the game. But, now it's my turn. I am fighting not for myself, but for my son -- in whose best interest his father is sadly incapable of acting.

I'VE BEEN MARRIED 11 YEARS, 2 KIDS UNDER 9 YEARS OF AGE. SHE IS A "WALKAWAY WIFE" AND TOOK THE KIDS. SHE HAS A BLOOD THIRSTY ATTORNEY THAT LIES CONSTANTLY AND GETS CAUGHT UP WITH MY WIFE'S EXTORTIONS OF THE TRUTH. I NEED SERIOUS HELP AND THIS BOOK AND OR REVIEW MIGHT BE THE KEY. PLEASE CONTACT ME. I HAVE SPENT 35K SO FAR TRYING TO DEFEND MYSELF AND SEEKING JOINT AND IT STILL ISN'T OVER AND THE CUSTODY EVALUATOR HASN'T STARTED YET. LETTING YOUR WIFE STAY HOME WITH THE KIDS WHILE YOU WORK, IN MY CASE HAS BEEN A BIG MISTAKE, SHE LEAVES, I HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE FOR THE NEXT 12 YEARS.

Interesting book coming from both the perspective of the divorce lawyer and a psychologist. Some good, solid advice here. While going through a divorce you should gather as much information as possible and know how to protect yourself both emotionally and financially.
Seven Secrets to a Successful Divorce
Important book, along with..........2006-01-04
Divorce is one of the most grueling experiences anyone can go through, and this book is a great guide for easing the challenges. The book is packed with information on the legal and emotional issues that are likely to arise -- and how to deal with them. The topics span the board, from making the initial decision, to preparing for trial, to how to talk with the kids about it all.
THe authors have a section on negotiating with your spouse, and I think that that is essential. They mention the work of Harvard's Roger Fisher, who just published a new book that you don't want to miss if you're dealing with divorce. The book is 'Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as you Negotiate.' (The chapters on autonomy and appreciation struck a chord with me and offered great advice.)
Very Informative, but deceptively biased.......2005-07-03
After reading many, many studies on the subject of divorce, support and custody, and also personally being a single father for 13 years with sole custody of 3 children and also being a non-custodial parent of one younger child I feel I can comment objectively on this book.
First off, it is clearly very well written, covers almost all aspects of its subject and uniquely combines views from an emotional point of view as well as legal point of view. It also strives to be unbiased and provide clear representation of both parents. I do recommend this book but do so with one caveat (hence my rating of 3 stars rather than 5).
The book is riddled with hidden biases in favor of Mom rather than Dad and the reader should be cognizant of that. Also, it is not clear that all aspects of studies are clearly represented. i.e., both sides. The tricky thing is that both sides are mentioned but even when there is a preponderance of studies favoring one side, it seems the authors may lean towards the other side. A fairer presentation of studies supporting both sides would be really beneficial (particularly on child custody, visitation, overnights, bonding, etc.). Many of the studies are represented in summary form and as such remove a lot of important context.
A good example of a hidden bias:
"The Paradox requires that parents take into careful consideration how well their children are able to tolerate separation from their mother, the child's temperament, and the strength of the father-child bond prior to divorce, and weigh all this against the likelihood of the father staying in the child's life...." Page 203 - determining custody arrangements.
This seems like a very objective statement but upon closer examination it is clear that the authors are concerned with whether the child(ren) can tolerate separation from mom but never question whether or not the child(ren) can handle the separation from dad or what that impact might be. In addition, it questions the father-child bond but never suggestions that the mother-child bond should be evaluated as well in such a determination. The phrase ends with us weighing all of this against whether or not it is likely that dad will stay in the picture - again, what about mom. Studies are increasingly showing that even when mom has full custody of her children she can be less than a model parent for a variety of reasons.
Here's another:
"The amount of time between father and child is important because it facilitates a closer parent child relationship. But time does not automatically equal closeness. The quality of time spent and the level of involvement .... are ... more important." Also Page 203 - determining custody arrangements.
Again - sounds objective enough but actually why is this represented only in terms of dad. Isn't this statement true for moms as well? Phrased as written there is an assumption that mother time does equal closeness and that it is automatically quality otherwise why point this out only for fathers during a discussion on custody which should be gender neutral. If the term was written with parent in place of father then it would be truly objective. As written it supports the notion that moms are custodial parents and dads are visitors - and not to worry about the amount of time dads spend - but worry about the quality of time they spend. So to be fair, don't worry about the time mom spends with the children, just the quality of time she spends - thereby freeing up large amounts of time for dad and children.
These are only 2 examples but please read this book with caution, such biases are sprinkled all through out the book (perhaps because the authors are both moms) and amongst a backdrop of authority, general objectivity and mastery of the subject matter which makes them all the more dangerous.

Complete with case studies and extensive discussion from the A-Z of all that you need to know on the divorce procedure/psyche, the book is well-balanced where the authors weighed the pros and cons of oft-repeated tactics, not least stressing ad nauseam that retaliation and lying to get your way as non-viable options. It is one of those rare self-help books where the humanity and sterling character of the authors shined through as readers are constantly reminded how divorce is a no-win scenario to all and how one should best move on from the unpalatable situation in one piece. This book is a gem amidst the universe of divorce guides advocating revenge, male/female bashing and dirty tricks. Equipped with knowledge from this book, readers could save their sanity and their children's, not least money on oftentimes deficient advice from attorneys who have their own agendas to meet. This book is good place to start when confronted by the "D" word and is placed right on top of the priority must-read list if you have just time for one.

This book gives a straight easy to follow explanation of what to expect in the collaboarative process. The book guides you through the process step by step and includes helpful questionnaires to see if this is a good fit for your divorce. Lots of useful and insightful material in the Appendix. I would highly recommend to anyone, including lawyers, who wants to get a feel for how the collaborative model might be better than a traditional divorce. I practice in the area, and recommend this book to my clients.

I just finished this book, which was easy to read and well written. I have practiced
divorce law for 34 years, mediated civil and family law disputes for 10 years, completed collaborative
training, and have begun the collaborative practice of law. I am really
enjoying it and plan to change the focus of my practice to collaborative law.
As a divorced father of two adult children, I have personally experienced the dark side of
divorce via the traditional method and hope to offer clients another option to the traditionally adversarial way of divorcing.This book is a great guide for the practitioner and for those who are considering a divorce. As a family law attorney in Minnesota who believes that helping my clients is more important than maximizing my billable time, I am starting to use the Collaborative Practice method in some of my family law cases. After reading this book, The Collaborative Way to Divorce, I decided that the Collaborative Practice method would be better (less expensive with better outcomes) than traditional litigation for many of my family law clients. In family law cases (most often divorce), I frequently recommend proceeding Collaboratively rather than through traditional litigation, especially where children are involved. The Collaborative Way to Divorce leads both the client and the practitioner (attorneys, mental health, financial and other professionals) through both the benefits and the process of proceeding collaboratively. This book is readable by nonlawyers and lawyers alike and I highly recommend it. One of Two Key Books to Read if Contemplating Divorce.......2006-08-09
This book is one which I would recommend to any individual considering a divorce. One of the authors of the book, Stu Webb, is the "founder" of the collaborative divorce movement. The book should be read before selecting and going forward with traditional adversarial representation. There are several pros of the book are that it is written with one voice - despite being written by two lawyers. It is clearly written. The alternative book is the book with Pauline Tessler as co-author. This books is somewhat longer and more inter-disciplinary in its approach. The co-author is a psychologist. If you are looking for the book that is easiest to read yet, by this one.

Nolo Press was founded in 1971 specifically for the purpose of publishing the first edition of this title. The Nolo principle is that not all legal transactions require retention of a lawyer, and in the state of California, for an uncontested divorce between two parties, tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees can be saved with the purchase of this $30 title (which is regularly 30% off from Amazon).
This book is a step-by-step guide to the divorce process and each of the forms necessary for filing for divorce in California. The text explains the hows and whys of the filing process and warns of potential pitfalls that can cause filings to be rejected or invalidated in the future.
My husband and I separated after a two year marriage and worked amicably through the process with the aid of this book. We knew that we would save a bundle of money by avoiding hiring lawyers to do discovery on our behalf, and we wanted to split up our property and move on as painlessly as possible. We each purchased a copy of this book and used it to file all the forms in our county courthouse. There is a helpline for telephone consultations at a reasonable rate, and we spent a few hundred dollars to get advice on the Separation Agreement we had drafted together (detailing financial and personal property separation as well as our agreement on our joint mortgage). We got big bang for our buck by having a helpline lawyer personally go over our Separation Agreement and we were confident with filing all the paperwork ourselves.
This book is intended for unconstested, fairly amicable divorces. If one party is out to "get" the other, the services of a lawyer may be required. Nolo recommends mediation before litigation if at all possible, to save money and effort. The authors remind the reader that lawyers do not have the consumer's best interest at heart--their first priority is to protect themselves from malpractice lawsuits, and so they will be as thorough (and costly) as possible to meet that need.
If you are considering leaving your spouse and do not anticipate an amicable divorce, I would recommend purchasing Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce instead of this book. That has all of the overview information of this title, with additional specifics on mediation and litigation that will help your case if it is going to be in those arenas instead of the do-it-yourself category.

Child Custody A to Z was not only very informative- it was very comforting for me to get the information needed while fighting the fight of my life! Expertly written. This is a very informative, play by play book. It outlines the real rules of the "Game". It provides detailed information for family members needing to understand the facts of how a custody case is decided, the players involved and who has the most impact on the case.
Guy White identifies how you should act, think, protect and live your child custody case. Clearly his 20 years experience has positively impacted the live of parents, children and grand parents which were on his side of the case!

This is a handbook for divorce where child custody is involved. Well written, down to the basics advice. I have read several others and the author gives real instrucuctions, not theory. Mr. White understands the template of custody and demonstrates how to move the chess pieces. There's strategy and chronologies in this book I haven't found in other books.

If you want a quick one stop source for most answers you need then this might be the book for you. It is an easy read and well organized but no new information than what I found elsewhere on the internet.
And, as the title suggests, this book offers little 'advice' on how to speed the process, what keys pieces of information the Church may be looking for to expedite the review or advice to those who may have a legitimate case but be light on the required supporting information.
I've found more answers researching internet blogs and speaking directly with my church.
Annulment erases what a civil divorce cannot and never can.......2006-09-26
An act of annulment is a spiritual rite of making null and void a transaction - in this case of marriage. It is not a divorce which is a legal declaration that obligations between two parties has ceased. Annulment is on par with marriage in the sense that it dissolves the vow and pledges spoken to create the marital covenant. This is a major distinction. Once a bride and bridegroom take vows to each other in front of a priest in a church in front of all their friends and families .... It is not a promise, a contract, or an agreement, it is a sacred divine vow, a permanent spiritual binding union of two souls. A fusion of two people into one. Annulment is a spiritual erasure of that vow. So non-Catholics who must go through the process to marry a Catholic will learn how to understand this process. It is a second chance to get it right once and for all.

This book explained the entire annullment process in terms a layperson could understand. The book is divided into question/answer segments, all relevant and easy-to-understand. The best resource I've found on an often confusing topic. A must-read if you are considering annullment or need to answer those who question the process.

A Start.......2007-01-02
Mr. Leving has done a lot of good for fathers' rights in Illinois, and this is a workmanlike treatment of the strategy you should adopt if in court over custody.
But by the time you read this (or a book like this), often it is already too late to set in motion anything that will let you see your children.
If I had a son, I would give him this book in college, and make sure he knew his rights from the get go. Then I would advise him to hold off on marriage or cohabitation as long as possible.
Better to defer marriage and fatherhood and protect your assets than to marry too early, entering the 50% club of potential divorce. All single men should read and heed - unless you want to subsidize some woman's life for eighteen years or more. If you do not feel a compelling need to to marry, feel free to avoid doing so.
After all, having a vagina almost automatically entitles you to custody in the event of a divorce, a decision frequently made in Family Court, where there is no evidentiary due process. In other words, you have more legal rights in criminal court as a defendant than you do in Family Court as a petitioner or respondent. Marriage and fatherhood are dicey propositions these days.

I have not read this book, but am looking for other self help books on a similar subject.I am a women , and have a child from a previous marriage.This father happens to be in prison for rape and bodily harm on a stranger.He has not seen our child since our son was 4 months old, my son is now 7 years old.
I remarried 2 years ago to wonderful man, we have been living together for a total of 5 years and my son knows him as his only father figure, infact we never incouraged my son to call my husband dad, but one day he just started to on his own.Children know who care for them, shelter them, love them ,and support them.You dont have to be a biological father or mother to do that!
My problem is this violent criminal still has rights to a child he dosn't even know or love , and when he does get out of prison who knows what kind of revenge he will take on me for not allowing visitation.Yes I know I chose to marry him and have a child , but If I knew what he was capable of I assure you I wouldn't have even given him the time of day, but as many of us know we never see the full person until we have lived with them for long enough.This man was also violent, and threatened harm upon me and my infant son.An all around abusive dude, there isnt enough time to even tell even a fraction of the stuff he put us through .
As a parent I should have a right to protect my son from any harmful person even his own biological father. attorney fees to have parental rights revoked so my husband can adopt can cost easily $15,000 in california. I dont have that type of money, and even if I do go through with it only 25 percent of these cases win.
I know there are great fathers out there who deserve to see there children.As a woman I couldn't imagine being so evil and try to take a great fathers rights away without a reason. With my sons biological father you can see that my son could be in danger if he ever had rights to him, but where are my rights to protect him, and where are my sons rights to be safe from potiential harm?
As for the men out there who are in my situation.Try not to be bitter towards women , just like men I assure you there are good ones out there!This isnt a war against the opposite sex, its a war against parents who are dangerous to our childrens welfare, and those people exists on both sides, and it is just as hard for women as it is for men trust me.

I felt compelled to write about this book after reading one of the reviews on it apparently written by a female.
The review yearned for a REAL fathers advocate book written by someone who has been there and lived through the HELL that is divorce, custody and a compete loss of everything that resembled "my life" - after I caught my wife cheating on me.
I read this book during the first stages of my divorce and did not find it overly helpful. BUT, it was the only book that I found that spoke of what was about to happen.
I have been writing columns and attending divorce/mens support groups for two years now and am VERY despondent about what I am seeing.
Fathers rights is the "civil rights" story of this decade and it needs to be SEEN and SPOKEN about in the media.
I have been on a personal crusade to get groups organized in DENVER and to get any media outlet to focus on men's rights but I get NOTHING back - I have emailed Dr Phil, 20/20, every possible media outlet and all I get back is more stories on "deadbeat dads" and Women and Domestic violence.
Bad news GUYS:
We know the courts do not care -
We know the laws are laughably biased -
We know the media would rather propagate more female friendly stories -
But most guys do not ask WHY THIS IS.
I see this as Men not taking action. Men avoid support groups because we are supposed to "suck it up".
Men - WAKE UP - Get active.
If I cannot get this story on 20/20 or Dr Phil, it is because MEN are NOT the audience.
DO men vote, do men get involved in local politics, do men go to therapy to Resolve "their" issues. And these issues could include "how to deal with the powerlessness you feel in the system".
I am working to put together articles I have written about MY experience -
And it was/is horrible:
Wife cheats - gets caught - blames me for her behavior. Badgers the police with false charges against me - of which, I have to expend money to fight her.
My son (8) has cancer. My wife continued to change appointment times and cancel times.
AND GUESS WHAT GUYS:
When you get a Child Advocate or Child Family Investigator:
The game is:
As a MEN, you can never get angry.
If the ex plays with parenting time.
You cannot get angry.
If the ex uniformly ignores Permanent Orders.
You cannot get angry.
If the MAN gets angry the courts will CRUCIFY YOU.
I have documented my experiences and have read most every book (recommend Divorce Poison!!!!!) and plan to get this issue NATIONAL Attention.
I am not optimistic at the moment.
Finally, men, remember, no matter what transpires - no matter the complete injustice of the courts, lawyers, your ex's horrible wrath -
Remember that everything is about the kids. One mistake by you, as the male and father, and the system will take your kids away from you.
Make sure EVERY action is done with this in mind.

The author of this book certainly does not say anything that is untrue, even given the huge disparity of laws in the 50 states. However, on the front cover, among other things, he says you will learn how to:
*Find an effective and empathetic attorney
*Avoid unfavorable custody arrangements
*Overcome the "tender years" bias
*Remain financially solvent
To be quite honest, being the second wife of a man who has been taken to the cleaners repeatedly by a devious first wife who has no moral compass, all I can say is this book must contain magical powers, because that is the only way any of these things are going to happen.
First off, as far as finding an effective attorney, forget about it. The author's advice is pollyanna-ish at best. Attorneys are foremost interested in making money, and family law only pays off in volume. Therefore your case will get the obligatory two hour cram session from your attorney just prior to court. Plan on doing any real investigation yourself, and realize you are going to probably have to give your attorney a script of questions to read in court because these people are not "out of the box" thinkers.
As far as avoiding unfavorable custody arrangements and overcoming the tender years bias, remember that judges are generally from the most conservative ranks of lawyers, and lawyers are from the most conservative ranks of society. I'm not talking about "conservative" in political terms. I'm talking about conservative in terms of conserving and never questioning the status quo, and the status quo is father = cash machine, mother = protector of civilization. Nothing but divine intervention is going to overcome that. Daniel Broderick overcame it, but then look what happened to him. The author of this book misleads you into believing that the system is remotely fair and unbiased, probably because he has been part of the system and cannot see it for what it is.
As far as remaining financially solvent, the author completely overlooks the most important factor of all - which state you live in. Some states, such as Texas and New York, have absolute limits of 25% of your pre-tax income put on child support. As much as the courts and the mother of your children would love to pick your pockets for more money, this is all they are going to get. However, if you are unfortunate enough to live in the state of Virginia, there is no limit on alimony or child support and you can wind up with negative income flow, which happened in the case of my husband's divorce and is happening now in the case of an acquaintance and his divorce. In fact, the financial ruin of a Virginia divorce is the reason Aldrich Ames gave for becoming the worst spy in American history.
In summary, although I may seem harshly critical, this book is moderately helpful as to absolute facts and a mentality you must take if you are on the road to litigation. However, I subtract two stars because I think it gives false hope to single fathers and their probable future in terms of staying close to their children and not winding up in debtor's prison if the mother is determined to fight. I've been up close and personal with this ongoing problem in my husband's life for the past 14 years, so I think I know what I'm talking about.

This book is a must read for all dads who are facing custody disputes of any type. Fathers are a very important part of a child's life and they should know how to fight to stay close and involved with their children.
