The fact that it's possible to walk to the summit (no mountaineering skills needed) has made this Africa's most popular trek. Detailed maps and route information make this guide to Mount Kilimanjaro a must-have for those wanting to climb it.

5 out of 5 stars Kilimanjaro: The Trekking Guide to Africa's Highest Mountain - 2nd Edition; Now includes Mount Meru.......2007-02-01

This is a great book. I encourage anyone wishing to climb Kili to read it.
I climbed Kili and prior to the climb I learned all about the route I was taking (Shira Plateau). The maps are great.
I also went for the Lava Tower climb and the Reusch Crater, and as the book says: "If you reach the Ash Pit, you can truly say that you have conquered this mountain."

5 out of 5 stars This is the Kili book to buy........2006-06-09

I climbed Kili in January 2006. In the months preceding the trip, I pored over numerous books on the mountain, including this book by Henry Stedman. This book was head and shoulders above the rest. Stedman's excellent descriptions of the day-to-day trekking are complemented by what I feel is genuine respect for the mountain and the people who live near it. After reading this book, you'll feel that you actually know what to expect; you'll stop worrying about whether you'll make it to the top and start looking forward to all the amazing details of this truly wonderful part of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-08

My first time in Africa and trekking up Kili!! And everything I needed to know was in this great book. If you are planning to climb Kili, do not hesitate and get this book.

Every year Henry and his dad (with help from Mudge, of course) make Henry's mother a funny lunch for Mother's Day. Shopping for their juicy, crunchy surprise is fun, and preparing it is even more fun. But sharing it with Henry's mother is the most fun of all!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mothers Day Lunch.......2007-02-09

The attractivness of this story is the special bond that has occurred with Henry and his family. He is so excited about Mothers Day "knowing" that he and dad will take a secret trip to get something special for mom. Arriving home they creatively make something together, that they think mom will just love! Mudge and his appetite just enhance the humor that makes this an all around fun story.

4 out of 5 stars another Henry and Mudge.......2005-09-30

Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat". My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day. If you love the series, get it. If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.

With this Level 2 focus on independent reading skills, kids will more readily move from beginning reader to enjoying more complex tales with paragraphs and short chapters. What better place to start than with Henry and Mudge & The Funny Lunch, Cynthia Rylant's zany story of kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch ever ? against all odds?color drawings add to the appeal.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars walks aren't very interesting.......2006-02-07

I was disappointed with this product. The format is convenient, but the walks they recommend aren't real intersting. Most of the walks are very short (usually only a few blocks) and are mostly in the touristy edges of the city. I much prefer "Stairway Walks in San Francisco" which has longer walks (a few miles each) and focuses more on the more diverse interior of the city.

5 out of 5 stars Scale Issue.......2005-11-23

Though there is no scale bar on the maps themselves, these decks come with an info card that explains that these maps ARE drawn to scale. Most cards are drawn at a scale where one inch equals a 1000 feet, and a few marked with white borders have scales where one inch equals 2600 feet.

This info is easy to miss if you don't read the explanatory card, but these maps are definitely easy to use once you have. Plus they are cute.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful BUT no info on Distance.......2005-10-16

I was born and raised in San Francisco and I am delighted and impressed with my recent purchase of the City Walk series for SF, however there is one major drawback. There is no way to judge the length of the walk. Not only is there no mention of distance, but the maps of the walks are not consistently to scale. Meaning the maps simply show the rout as it will fit on the card so an inch can be a block or a quarter of a mile and this is NOT indicated on the card.

In addition, the walks vary greatly in distance, some only a few blocks and some over 4 miles. This can be misleading if you were to try one walk and then another with out knowing and not preparing for a much longer walk. Also, I wanted to use the walks to "spice up" my exercise routine, it would be great to know how many miles to track my progress.

If you are planning on using this as a tourist guide as a new visitor there is some great information, including parking and bus information to the walks. However, just keep in mind the distance is in no way indicated on the map or under the difficulty rating. For example, two walks are rated "steep" one includes a steep street about a block long, another is a few miles trek up a very steep mountain.

If I was not familiar with the area I would never have known this until I set out for a walk and perhaps found it too long to manage. I only know the distance differences because I know the streets and trails referred to in this "book" (which is really a set of 50 cards with a map on one side and descriptions of the walks on the other.)

Pros:

- Good representation of SF culture and beauty
- Detailed points of interest information
- interestingly organized walks
- bus and parking information to and from walks
- easy to read maps
- information on steepness/ difficulty of walk

Cons:

- does not provide information on distance of walk
- walks vary greatly in length
- maps not drawn to scale to reflect length of walk

5 out of 5 stars Really smart idea - I wish I had designed it myself.......2005-10-06

My 2 favorite American cities are NYC and San Francisco. I used to spend a lot of time doing projects in California and spent every free hour in the City by the Bay. Since I have the NYC cards and love them, I figured I would buy these and have them for my next trip. A friend borrowed my set for a recent trip and told me that he followed several cards and found them a great travelling companion. In fact, he said he followed a card to the "best view in the City." Can't get much better than that.

Book Description

On Halloween day, Hank comes to school dressed as a table in an Italian restaurant. Nick McKelty, the resident school bully (dressed in a total blood-and-guts costume), thinks Hank's costume is wimpy and that Hank wouldn't know how to be scary and gross if his life depended on it! So Hank decides to create the scariest haunted house ever, and plans to invite McKelty over and show him what scary really is. The only problem is that Hank's dog, Cheerio, is scared of Hank's haunted house. So scared, in fact, that when Hank tries to find him, he's nowhere in sight! Have Hank's Halloween hijinks gone too far?

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2004-06-22

As the other reviewers point out, this is another shameless attempt by Henry Hill to profit from the hard work of others, namely Martin Scorsese, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci. Any one with a minimal knowledge of organized crime could have written this book. Henry Hill makes the following insightful comments, "New York has four seasons and five crime families." "The worst trip to NYC is if you don't come back (alive)." "If you mispronounce Houston Street, you'll get whacked." Oh yes, Mr. Hill, the SoHo and Village residents will definitely kill when a tourist thrusts such a heinous indignity upon them. Complementing stories that aren't even up to New York Post standards are quite possibly the worst photographs I have ever seen. Photographs include the following: nightclubs at 10am with the shutters closed, an abandoned factor that could be anywhere in the US, a chain link fence at the end of a road, and surveillance shots of fatuously inflated lowlifes hanging around a junkyard. The unfortunate thing about this book is that it could be good. A serious book about the mob by one of its members could very possibly give insight to the rest of us. This is not that book. In Hill speak, other mobsters should have him `whacked' for embarrassing them since readers may assume the average mob mind is as weak as his.

2 out of 5 stars HENRY HILL LIKES TO TELL STORIES.......2004-06-20

This book contains some interesting stuff but most of it is recycled from wiseguy and the wiseguy cookbook. In addition to being extremely fluffy some of the stuff he says is flat out wrong. He says that Vito Genovese somehow posthumously blew the door off of Frank Costellos crypt. Genovese died in 1969 and Costello died in 1973. Most crackheads can see the problem with this little tidbit. Save your money and read it at the store, it should only take about 15 minutes. By the way, I made the oven penitentiary sauce from his cookbook and it sucked.

5 out of 5 stars Miller at his finest, then again, not so much like Miller.......2006-12-12

When he was not tackling sex and philosophy, Henry Miller traveled. The Colossus of Maroussi is a book of those later times, when he, an "American Savage", entered the world of peace, beauty, and most of all, simplicity he was longing for while living in America. Nothing could prepare him for what he encountered in Greece, not the streets of New York, nor the streets of Paris. Although enamored with France, Miller's passion for Europe goes way further in this book, which at times reads more like L. D. novel than Miller's own. Yet, at the same time he manages to wrap himself in the beauty he encounters, dive in it without holding a breath and resourface a new, more complete being, spellbound by his experience. If only there were more writers like him -- ahh, wishful thinking. Most of all, this book shows Miller in a different light, not limited by his fame for writing about sex (actually, most of his books are not) he explores a new land, unknown to him until then. His ability to take the reader's hand and walk throughout the countryside, observe the people, customs and scenery, is combined with philosophy and his personal views (What else would you expect from Miller?). I have shared this book with many people who did not like Miller and their minds were changed forever. What more can be said? Nothing -- read the book and find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars At his best in Niller in Greece.......2006-11-05

Henry Miller's books fall into many categories, the lover of humanity, the lover of nature and art, the hater of the treadmill of twentieth-century society and business, and the sexual fiend. This book touches mainly on the first two, some on the third, and none on the fourth. To me, that is Miller at his best, the lyrical wordsmith.

Instead of talking of France (as in several books), or California (as in Big Sur), or the various parts of the US (as in Air-Conditioned Nightmare), here Miller tells of his trip to Greece immediately before World War II spread there. He loved Greece and the Greeks he met. His desriptions are full of color and life.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction To Henry Miller: His Best Novel!.......2006-07-29

I highly recommend this book to everyone. The book was written and finished on the eve of WWII. And the "Colossus of Maroussi" is by far the most enjoyable book I have ever read by Henry Miller. It is not too often that one can pick up a book and read over and over again as I have done with "Colossus Of Maroussi." Miller wrote this most beautiful of all books after having left France, and having finished his more notable "Tropic," books. My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, introduced me to the book. Up to this time I was very well read. Having read all the classics, fiction, and non-fiction alike. Dostoevsky was my favorite, and I have read many books that have stayed with me all my life: Balzac, Gogal, Rabelais, Montaigne, Dante, Chaucer, Milton, Cervantes, Joyce, etc. Everyone that is but Henry Miller.

Thankfully my future wife was a Henry Miller fan, because this book moved me like few books have ever moved me before or since. Miller's vision of what he encounters in Greece will captivate you---the reader. I am writing this review because when I encounter people who are well-read, most have never heard of this wonderful gem of a novel. I really dislike the word "travel-novel" that is attached to this book, because it is more than that. It is an introspective book that captures Henry Miller at his best. I am pleased that I did not read Henry Miller's other book's before I read this novel: I may not have appreciated Miller's writing as much as I do today. Having read many of Henry Miller's books since first turning the pages of this greatly overlooked "Masterpiece," [Yes, to me the book is a masterpiece of writing] I highly recommend the book.

I find this book one of the better ones of Henry Miller that I have read: Especially considering it was written by an American on Greece. [American Savage: As Miller refers to himself]. It's kind of funny to think about this now, however, after I first read this book, I actually wanted to go to Greece and experience the same sort of journey that Henry Miller experienced. Even going so far as to retracing his footsteps in his journey. Well, I was much younger then. However, I do believe that you will enjoy this novel, as Miller does not write in any way, shape, or form like his Tropic novels. Miller's writing has a way of almost making you experience life in Greece. Therefore, I recommend the book highly, for you will not be disappointed. [Stars: 5+]

4 out of 5 stars He's different all right.......2006-07-12

I found this book lying in a shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia and began reading it. I've read a bit of Henry Miller before.

His perspective and documentation of the Greeks on the eve of WWII is one the most interesting aspects of the book. I also love how he meticulously documents what he eats, especially considering I was eating garbage while I read it.

His ex-patriotic overtones and anti-American sentiments rub me the wrong way, but at the same time it doesn't ruin the book.

What makes it four stars is his insistence on using obscure and unintelligible vocabulary, intentionally I suspect, in order to make the work seem more literary or "artistic".

Whatever man.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless snapshot !!.......2005-06-28

I've read Miller's book countless times and always feel I'm traveling in Greece again. His writing and characters are larger than life (particularly Katsimbalis, the "Colossus" referenced in the title). The only book by Miller that I've really enjoyed, his passion for the subject makes up for any shortfalls. This is fine travel writing: personal philosophy, politics, and crystal clear word pictures of a unique land and people, delivered with respect and affection. Henry Miller's tribute to Greece - a vivid snapshot of a timeless culture!

THE DEFINITIVE AND SPELLBINDING RECORD OF SHACKLETON'S LEGENDARY ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, IMMORTALIZED ON FILM BY PIONEERING PHOTOGRAPHER FRANK HURLEY

Sir Ernest Shackleton's trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1917 was one of the great feats of human endurance -- one vividly captured in the powerful and dramatic pictures taken by Frank Hurley, the expedition's official photographer. These images, appearing together here for the first time in print, constitute an amazing body of photojournalism created under the most adverse circumstances imaginable. As this book reveals, however, they are far more than visual reportage; they also are images of great artistry that capture the life-and-death drama that was played out against an arctic landscape of magnificent and terrible beauty.

The story told here through Frank Hurley's lens began in the summer of 1914, when Shackleton and his crew set sail from England with the intention of being the first to cross Antarctica from one coast to the other, passing through the South Pole on the way. After five months they reached the freezing Weddell Sea and were within sight of land when the Endurance became trapped in the ice pack. Nine months later, the ship was finally crushed, leaving the crew stranded on drifting ice floes at the end of the earth.

What followed is one of the most remarkable survival stories in the history of human exploration. Shackleton's men camped on the ice floes for five months before they escaped in their lifeboats and, after a harrowing five-day voyage, reached Elephant Island, a barren outcrop too remote for any hope of rescue. From there, Shackleton and five other volunteers set out for South Georgia Island and miraculously reached their destination after traversing 850 miles of the fiercest seas on the face of the planet in an open lifeboat. There they raised help, and three months later, after three failed attempts, Shackleton made it back to Elephant Island with a rescue ship.

Incredibly, every single one of his men survived. Almost as incredible is the fact that so much of this drama was captured on film by Frank Hurley, and that so many of these pictures survived. South with Endurance is the first book to reproduce a total of nearly 500 extant photographs, including many remarkable color images that have never been published before. It is also the first to reproduce the photos to a standard and size that display Hurley's work as the art that it is. Drawn from the archives of the Royal Geographical Society in London, the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney, and the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, the photographs are complemented by excerpts from Hurley's diary, a chapter about the expedition itself, a biographical essay, and commentary about Hurley's photographic techniques.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Pictorial Account of the 'Endurance'.......2004-03-28

This mammoth book is the definitive pictorial account of the voyage of Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the 'Endurance', on their death defying journey to Antarctica between 1914 and 1917 as told through the camera lens of master photographer Frank Hurley. The book is approximately twelve inches square, and can easily be mistaken for a (very large and heavy) coffee table book from afar. Once it is opened, though, it is obvious that this in no trifling work. It contains background and narrative on Shackleton and the expedition and all of the surviving Hurley photographs (almost 500 of them total) and in scope is the most complete and amazing account of the expedition I have ever seen.

The text is enlightening and wonderful, but the photographs are the unmistakable stars of the book. Hurley was taken along to document the expedition, and document it he did, despite the fact that it turned out completely differently than any of the men would have ever wanted or imagined. The photographs range from breathtakingly beautiful pictures of water and ice, to fascinating character studies, particularly of life aboard the ship, to poignant photos that are impossible to view without being choked up, of which I place the photos of the dogs and cat at the top, realizing that all the animals, their most faithful of friends, were ultimately killed on Shackleton's orders to conserve food (many of the dogs were eaten.) It is truly fortunate that Hurley was along to document the voyage; mere words alone could never do justice to one of the greatest survival stories ever told, and certainly the most harrowing that I can imagine.

The book is a timeless masterpiece and belongs on the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in the Antarctic, polar exploration, or man's ability to endure untold hardships yet emerge victorious over the elements.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-04-09

I was fortunate that I could follow Shakelton on T.V. while reading and viewing these excellent pictures. This book is outstanding and I would urge anyone interested in either Shakelton or photography to get it. I could not help but think that every member of this expedition had story to tell. We have heard only a few. Amazing the limits of human endurance and to think that they had a photographer with them who realized what he was filming, and did so for all of us to see.To Hurley was far ahead of his time, and I am inclined to think that Ansel Adams had probably learned from Mr. Hurley.

    5 out of 5 stars A real treasure.......2002-04-04

This is the most defenitive retelling of Shackleton's adventure in pictures. Frank Hurley was an exceptional photographer who just happened to take pictures of a journey that without them would be simply unbelievable. Any Hurley's picture of the Endurance expedition is a treasure, and in this book are all of them!

5 out of 5 stars You've read the book(s) now see the film.......2002-01-16

Frank Hurley's book is a mastepiece of photographic art. Having read many Antarctic books already, particularly "South" the story of the endurance expedition, I devoured this book to see the whole story in detail.

The book is a work of technical genius and without artistic equal among work of that era, particularly when you realise what awful conditions he worked under.

The notes accompanying the pictures relate the epic tale in only slightly less detail than the South book, but you still fully appreciate the efforts which went into it's production.

Other members of the crew could have been more resentful of Hurley, due to the time he spent in his darkroon (he was not part of the ship's crew, therefore was not obliged to stand watch) and shooting film. Instead they regarded him with great respect, especially the numerous occasions he risked his life for the best shots. The true measure of the respect he engendered from the crew is the book itself. When the ship went down and the crew faced an uncertain future, all personal possesions bar a few photos and each man's personal journal were lost. Shackleton still insisted that many heavy glass plates be preserved dragged across the ice and sailed to South Georgia via Elephant Island. Still more were smashed by Hurley, once prints were taken (see "Green Collection" in Scott Polar research Library Cambridge UK) as he could not bear them to be left behind.

This book would form an essential addition to any Antarctic library. The faces all became attached to the names I already knew so well, seeing them at the start of the voyage then lost and forlorn next to the upturned boat on Elephant Island tells it's own harrowing story.
This bleak tale is uplifted by the magnificent images, which match the joy felt by all when Shackleton, "The Boss", returned to collect them safe and well. Even as a first foray into Antarctic literature.
(NB earlier reviewer incorrectly stated that Shackleton went back to UK after South Georgia returning to rescue the crew from Elephant Island. In fact He could not rest knowing the men expected his return and after only a few days rest, when his crew from the "James Caird" were ill in bed he took a whaler and eventually got the men safely off the Island several weeks later, after two unsuccessful attempts.)

5 out of 5 stars A must for any adventure library.......2001-11-17

If you are a fan of Antarctic exploration then this wonderful book should be in your library. Many know the incredible story of the Endurance and the trials those 28 men endured when the ship was locked in the ice and eventually crushed. The beauty of this book is that it documents the story with the remarkable photos of the expedition photographer, Australian Frank Hurley. When you consider the time period of this story (1914-1916) you can only marvel that Hurley produced such amazing images with the equipment that was available at that time. Additionally, the initial introduction to this photo collection is excellent. It presents a good recap of the Endurance expedition with many quotes from crewmembers that have not appeared in previous books. If you are a professional photographer, or even an amateur, the information on Hurley's equipment and the story of his early training will be of special interest. The over 500 photos will hold your interest for hours! I've read almost every book on Endurance and this will rank as one of my favorites.
