The Kin-Der-Kids is a rollicking comic opera of the ludicrous exploits of a group of young adventurers as they set off around the world in their bathtub with the oppressive Auntie Jim-Jam in hot pursuit. Wee Willie Winkie's World is a Little Nemo-esque visual tour-de-force of a little boy's charming fantasy world. Long considered an equal of Winsor McCay and George Herriman, Feininger's place in strip history is cemented with this beautiful, full-color, oversized collection, edited and featuring an introduction by historian Bill Blackbeard (Krazy & Ignatz).

This is a charming collection of early 20th century comics by Lionel Feininger. His colorful drawings are enrapturing: he has a great sense of design and ability to create characters. The Kinder Kids escape their elders and embark on fantastical adventures, Wee Willie Winkie sees the world through the imaginitive eyes of a child. These comics are very funny and magical.

Associated with the Die Bruecke and Bauhaus movements of early twentieth century, Feininger emigrated to America during World War II, where he painted the subjects he admired most: images of the urban world; the beauty and power of the trains; paddle steamboats, schooners and yachts making their way up the Hudson River. Architect and art collector Harald Loebermann was drawn to the structural ingenuity of Feininger's drawings and paintings. His collection of Feininger's graphic work is published here in its entirety for the first time.

intimate knowledge of the Bauhaus..........2006-09-02

I have refered to this book a lot over the years. If you don't like the man's work there is a lot to learn from Feiningers letters. For one Feininger, Klee and Kandinsky saw a lot of each other. They feared the technological direction of Moholy Nagy. Although the above three developed a systemized visual curricula . They believed in feeling in art! Moholy was interested in a stricter approach. Nagy didn't much care for poetics. I once discussed this with the publisher of Vision in Motion by Nagy , she said that , oh!! they were all jealous of Moholy as he was so versatile! The book includes Lyonel's discussion of his work ,his rejection for membership in the Abstract Artist's Association.Essays by his son and Alfred Barr.Like the other documentary monographs in modern art this book helps the reader learn of the development of American Art. The Stuart Davis book in this series is also valuable.
