Compatible with AT&T cell phone service, the highly-customizable Nokia 3100 features a WAP/XHTML Internet browser, plenty of phone and organizer features, and some particularly nutty fun-features, all displayed on a high-resolution, 128 x128 pixel, 4,096 color screen.

One of the more interesting things about the 3100 is its faceplate capabilities (faceplates sold separately). Not only can its special, optional faceplates light up in time with music, ring tones, and game play, but they also glow in the dark. Other customization features include animated screen savers, eight different color schemes, and a function where you can record up to a minute of voice or music data, then use it as a ring tone.

Used simply as a phone, the 3100 benefits from Nokia's typically slick design; its 4-way scroll key makes menu navigation and dialing a breeze. Primary calling features include a vibrating alert, integrated speakerphone, and local language support for English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese speakers. Nokia also supports TTY/TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf), and hearing aid support for the Nokia LPS-3 Loopset, (adapter and Loopset sold separately).

Mobile messaging features are fairly standard: via MMS, users can send, edit, forward, and receive image and text messages to and from compatible phones or PCs. Images and ring tones received via MMS can be saved in phone's handy image gallery. There's also conventional e-mail, instant messaging capability, and predictive text input. You can even attach text to downloaded images and send them via multimedia messaging to other compatible cell phones and PCs. With the built-in Internet browser, users can download new wallpaper and graphics, and more Java games and applications in addition to World clock, Snake EX2, Beach Rally, and Bowling, which are already included with the phone.

Organizer features include a 300 contact phone book with photo caller ID, 500 entry calendar, alarm clock with snooze, and stopwatch with countdown timer. Data sync with your PC can be accomplished via infrared wireless modem, using the included Nokia PC Suite 5 software. There's also high speed data transmission, via GPRS.

The Nokia 3100 weighs 3.5 ounces and measures 4 x 1.68 x 0.77 inches. Its Lithium Ion batteries are rated at up to 6 hours digital talk time, and up to 17 days digital standby time. It operates on GSM/GPRS 850/1800/1900 MHz service.
