There is a button as part of the cord and and depending on your phone, it will perform 1 of 2 tasks. 1 is mute on the fly and number 2 is hanging up. Your phone will do one or the other but not both. With most phones the button works as a mute. You must keep the button pressed for mute to be continuous.
