Excellent monitor for a great price!.......2006-06-09

The Benq FP202W 20.1" monitor is simply a great monitor, and it has surprisingly good quality for the price. The colors are crisp, and the brightness and contrast is perfect and can be calibrated to your preference.

The 8ms response time is not common among monitors this big. It means it's great for gamers, and it worked remarkably well on the latest games that I have tested. There is absolutely no ghosting on most games, but there is some slight ghosting in very fast first person shooters where you move too fast, like Counterstrike. It is still not annoying to be a hassle. I notice it more because I am used to extreme precision and speed while moving in that game.

There are 4 preset modes -

1. Standard - This is good for the general work, like word processing, spreadsheets, programming and browsing.

2. Movie1 - This is good for watching movies that are darker than normal.

3. Movie2 - This is good for watching movies that are bright.

4. Photo - There is good for watching photos, although there is no significant difference in this mode.

The native resolution is 1600*1050, which is perfect. For playing the latest games with high quality at this resolution, you will need a significantly poweful graphics card such as the nVidia Geforce 7600 or above. I tested Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is one of the latest and demanding games out there, with a Geforce 7800GT, and it worked perfectly.

The frame (bezel) of the monitor is small enough, so the focus is purely on the screen. I did not have any dead pixels fortunately, but a few dead pixels should be expected in the worst case, which is common for all LCD monitors. There is also no light bleeding.

There is a DVI input as well as mini-sub input, so you could use 2 computers at the same time with this one monitor.

As for drawbacks, the controls are on the side of the monitor for some odd reason. This makes it very difficult to access, and you will have to turn your head to read the labels and figure out which one is which.

The bottom part of the monitor is brighter than the rest, which is also a common problem among LCDs. It is not a problem big enough to be an annoyance, however. This will be a problem for those who need accurate color representation for professional work, but should not be a problem for anyone else.

The monitor could use one or two USB ports, but it is understandable, especially at this price.

I use this monitor for heavy gaming, programming as well as 3D modeling and animation, and I am very satisfied with its perfomance.

The price of the monitor makes up for the minor drawbacks. This is an excellent monitor which is very affordable, and the quality is superb.
