Hot Tuna - Acoustic Blues Live at Sweetwater

Sure, they're all sitting down playing acoustic guitars. But there's not much that's otherwise laid back about this particular get-together with Hot Tuna, a long-running offshoot of the Jefferson Airplane. Between performances, the DVD offers bar-side conversations with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Cassidy, who discuss how they created the band while on the road with Jefferson Airplane as an outlet for the kind of blues--country and otherwise-- they had started out playing before turning to rock & roll. The performances at the Sweetwater, a long-time landmark club in Mill Valley, California, include low-key ruminations on classics like "Hesitation Blues," as well as an acoustic rave-up on Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm," featuring former Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and singer Maria Muldaur on vocals. Weir turns up on energetic bonus video tracks for the DVD, including "Walkin' Blues" and "Good Mornin', Little Schoolgirl." Production values are minimal; it was obviously shot with a limited number of cameras. But the playing is consistently inventive, with an additional 40 minutes of audio performance highlights on the DVD. --Marshall Fine
