Part New Wave, part pure punk, part Brit pop, the Psychedelic Furs have changed little over the course of their more than two decades together, as this video, recorded in Los Angeles in 2001, makes crystal clear. That means that Furs fans will delight in the 15-song, 75-minute concert's nonstop onslaught of thick, echo-drenched slabs of guitar and frontman Richard Butler's braying vocals. Sure, the lyrics are largely unintelligible, and the sound tends toward the monotonous; Butler says nary a word to the audience, and there are no on- screen titles, which makes it tough to tell one song from another. But the singer has undeniable charisma and energy, as well as some catchy tunes, including, of course, "Pretty in Pink," from the '86 movie of that name. And the 15-minute, three-song acoustic segment is a welcome bonus at the end of the program. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Great concert, good dvd.......2004-09-24

I agree that the sound could be a little better in places, but all in all this is a good dvd. The song selection is pretty decent, although my favorites tend to be from their first two and last two albums, not much else in between. I actually think Jon's guitar sounds better than on some of the albums. They could have done without the keyboard sounds, but that's my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars You Should Have Been There.......2003-01-04

I was actually in attendance at one of the two Los Angeles House of Blues shows that comprise the material on this DVD, and I have to say I am less than impressed with the finished product. First of all, rock and roll shows should never be captured on video if it can be avoided. We have all seen so many great FILMED concerts, that this just looks flat to me. The Furs cheaped out this time and it shows.

Second, as others have stated, the sound quality plain out sucks. I was at this show, and I really enjoyed their performance, so I am doubly disappointed that I have to compare my memories of such a great rock show with this inferior product. The sound levels abruptly rise and fall more often than the stock market, and Richard Butler sings so far behind the beat that it is distracting.

I do have to give them credit for choosing to play some of the more obscure songs off earlier albums, and there are some songs that they do justice to like "Pretty in Pink," but overall I can't sit thru this thing without cringing. Skip the disc and just see 'em live. Better luck next time guys.

4 out of 5 stars The CD Mix Was Better, But the Visual is Key.......2002-12-20

This concert footage is amazing on DVD. The Psychedelic Furs are back together, who knows for how long. This DVD captures a moment in music that may be lost forever. I saw the furs on this tour and they were amazing. I bought this DVD the moment it came out because I wanted to have a concert of a band that may very well be gone forever.

Front man Richard Butler leads this new incarnation of the furs here. The original furs had a horn section. . . an almost rotating cast. The original guitar John Ashton, and original bassist Tim Butler are back and that is definitely important to the band. Also involved in the project is Richard Fortus, and Earl Harven. Both are members of Richard Butler's 90's band Love Spit Love.

The mix on the DVD is not that great. . . That is the only thing that bugs me. The CD from the same show is mixed differently and it sounds better, it takes a little of the edge off of Butler's voice in songs like "Heaven" where on the DVD, it is pretty bad. It was like the mixers turned Richard up way too much. . . But other than that, the sound is great.

There are some extras on the DVD that are really good. There are three acoustic songs played somewhere in the House of Blues without an audience. One is new; "Wrong Train". . . It is great. There are also a couple new songs on the concert section of the DVD. The previously mentioned "Wrong Train" is one, and the other is called "Alive," and it is great.

One of the best features of the live show is that a lot of the "80's" feel is muted slightly. It makes the datedness of some of the albums seem to go away. This is a great DVD. It should be on the shelves of every Psychedelic Furs fan, as well as any fan of great music.

3 out of 5 stars Horrible Mix.......2002-06-06

I know that it is a challenge to get music DVD's to sound good playing them on a PC. You have too many factors like the software DVD processing, soundcard processing and a lack of proper bass-management to send the right signal to the speakers. BUT alot of DVD's sound great on my PC played through Philips Acoustic Edge 5.1 soundcard and Klipsch Promedia 5.1 THX speakers...this one DOES NOT.

Plus the style of music and the voice of the singer is the type that most people (including me) can't take in large doses. I was weary by the end of the 3rd song.

5 out of 5 stars Into You Like A Train.......2002-01-02

The power and elegance of Richard Butler and gang on this recording make for easily one of the most entertaining offerings of 2001. The set is beautiful, with soothing, mysterious lights, colors and images that provide a subtle background for the band -the band that is unequivocally keeping rock "alive." The sound is full and multilayered - the musicians, flawless. The Furs' addictive new single, by the way, renders attempts by other bands played on the radio (namely the one that uses the line 'I feel so alive, for the very first time') hopelessly futile and annoying.

This DVD provides a nice collection of classic Fur tunes and new singles, all performed with an excitement and energy not seen in most concerts by most bands these days. The Furs are not some eighties rehab band. They are presently a strong, vibrant rock band that deftly creates music that opens the mind and feeds the soul. They are more forward-looking and 'progressive' than the calling themselves rockers today.

Why is it so difficult for bands these days to achieve even a small percentage of the quality of The Psychedelic Furs? When Fur fans are asked, "Why are you only listening to bands that were around in the eighties" what comes to mind is that those who survived the eighties and then have gone on to become truly accomplished musicians blow away the garbage we hear every day on the radio. We just want good quality music, like the music on this recording; played by musicians who not only know what they are doing, but do it with pride and happiness.

Am I getting older and sounding a little like my parents when I castigate so much 'modern music?' Surely. But just give me the integrity, intelligence, and musical mastery of bands like The Furs and I'll give it a listen any day.

Look for releases by Butler and Furs in the future. Freshness and mastery can go hand-in-hand. This guy proves it like no other.
