Absolutely loved this DVD!.......2007-05-14
A perfect E squared (entertainment/education). Very well done and interesting documentary on mankinds deadliest killer ever! If you enjoy medieval histroy then this is a must. The plague transformed the face of Europe and affected life in inumerable ways. I highly recommend this entertaining and educational DVD.
Amazing!.......2007-02-03
Without going into too much detail, this documentary is amazing. The speakers are all experts in their respective fields, and the historical accuracy is beyond reproach. I found no such "religious hatred" anywhere in the film; again, pure historical accuracy. (To put it very VERY lightly, medieval Christians weren't exactly friendly to their Jewish neighbors. Look into it before getting all defensive, please.)
An excellent base of information for anyone with an interest in this watershed event in human history.
El Stinko.......2006-08-30
Poorly acted, laughable sets and non-stop diatribe against Christians generally and the Catholic Church specifically.
Apparently, all it takes to call oneself a historian today is a contempt for organized religion. It also helps to loath western culture as well. As for the history of the plague itself the reasoning would be unworthy of a C as part of a grade school book report.

The explosion of gruesome horror cinema in the wake of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is explored in this serious documentary, which has a welcome respect for an easily derided genre. A few academics make piquant observations (no film critics, although Robin Wood pioneered this line of thinking years ago), but mostly we hear from the filmmakers themselves: Romero, John Carpenter (on Halloween), Wes Craven (Last House on the Left), Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and David Cronenberg (Shivers). The directors focus on those films, not their entire careers, which limits the scope of the movie. Juxtapositioning newsreel horrors with movie scenes introduces provocative ideas about where horror comes from, but also feels a little facile. Unexpected bonus: the enthusiasm of John Landis, in describing the out-of-kilter experience of watching these affronts to good taste, and suggesting why they thrill as well as scare us. --Robert Horton

Interesting Documentary Of Films From The Golden Age of Fright.......2006-02-15
This is a documentary about horror films and their impact on the world between 1968-1979. We get to hear the points of views of the directors of some of the most frightening classic horror films ever made. IFC interviews Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, David Cronenburg, John Landis, Wes Craven, George Romero and more. We get an in depth look at the politics and upheaval of the 60's and 70's and how they influenced everyones life and the horror genre.
The DVD contains clips from events in history such as the Vietnam War, assasinations of some of the most prominent figures in America, clips from classic horror movies and discussions on what horror is about and why we go to see these films. The directors discuss some of their inspirations for the films, what scared them as a child and the horrors of the real world. Theres many striking and powerful images in this documentary, both real and fiction.
In a way it reminds you reality can be just as frightening as fiction, the real events that happen can be compared to the horror films, just with a diffrent face. Some of these events do happen in real life, yet we dare to face them, facing it gives you the illusion of control or knowing and that is the first step. Confronting it. And you can even examine what parts frighten you and what parts you enjoy and ask yourself why?
Professor Tom Gunning's words- Why do you go to see a horror film? some compare it to a roller coaster ride, theres a desire in a funny way for stimulus, we sometimes get disatisfied with that protection and we want it to be pierced.
Director Adam Simon left out some important horror/thriller films of the 70's like The Exorcist, Jaws, Carrie etc.. But i assume the movies he covered were some of his personal favorites. The ones he covered were enough to satisfy but i would have liked to have seen more films discussed.
Very good documentary and Highly recomended.
A truly superb ode to the golden age of horror........2006-02-13
This documentary is an absolute treasure for any true horror film buff. Containing insightful interviews from film philosophers and sociologists analyzing the films and the circumstances and reflections of the times in which they were made along with detailed and compelling interviews with such pioneering genre filmmakers as Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, George A. Romero, John Carpenter and others. The interview with special effects master Tom Savini in which he recalls gruesome images from his tour in Vietnam is riveting, adding to the overall bleakness of the piece. Fascinating, thoughtful, chilling and ultimately unforgettable. I applaud director Adam Simon for assembling the components to pull off this highly analytical serenade to the most profound and influential horror films and filmmakers and his ability to do so with integrity and intelligence and an obvious love for the genre. Extra kudos for the Godspeed You Black Emperor soundtrack. Brilliant.
Insightful, Respectful Documentary.......2004-08-26
A well directed, informative documentary that explains the links between horror films of the late sixties and seventies and the social changes going on in the United States at the same time. This documentary serves as a great companion to David J. Skal's book "The Monster Show" and other essays that tackle horror movies from a more sociological standpoint. One cannot ignore what was going on in the world at the time their favorite film was made. Even with escapist fare, the social and political goings on of the era often trickle into horror movies in the most surprising of ways as this doc shows. I've always been a fan of George Romero's Zombie movies, but was even more impressed with the way this doc dealt with Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left" and David Cronenberg's "Shivers", two movies that I've found in the past to be pretty unredeemable. Hearing the filmmakers discuss their motivations for these two movies helped me understand them better and made me want to give them another look! My only complaint with this movie was that it was not longer. I think that the film makers could have expanded on their thesis and covered more ground. I would love to see a sequel documentary that deals with the slashers of the later seventies like "Friday the 13th" and the arrival of the more psychological and fantasy oriented "Nightmare on Elm Street" series that came on the scene in the eighties and how they were linked to their respective decades.
the best doc on horror movies, ever!.......2004-04-03
a beautiful documentary that treats these horror films with the respect they deserve" dawn of the dead, shivers, halloween, last house on the left, texas chainsaw massacre.
it combines interviews with the directors, tom savini, and several film scholars; as they all describe how the films were actual unconscious reflections of the times. combined with the beautiful music of "godspeed you black emperor," this film gives overdue creedence and social justification to these films.
and, i have to say, the ending of shot of the leatherface dance, combined with music from "godspeed" is one of the most beautiful pieces of film i've ever seen!

PRIMAL FEAR!!! PRIMAL FEAR!!!!.......2007-05-08
This is definitely one of the best music DVDs I have ever seen. These guys know how to rock and will certainly become legends.
Primal Fear tears it up live!!!.......2004-05-18
Primal Fear are one of the best heavy metal bands on Earth and this DVD drives that point home! I've had this for a few months now and I still watch it often. The band is super tight and Ralf Sheepers belts those screams out like they're nothing. I've actually converted a few people to the Primal Fear cause simply by showing them this DVD. Anyone with metal pumping through his or her veins will absolutely love it!
This DVD has 2 roughly 45 to 50 minute concerts. One is filmed at the wacken open air festival (during the day!!!) and the other is in a club in Stuttgart. Both of them are professionally shot and look and sound fantastic.
The extras include two videos:
Angel in black
Armageddon
There is also a "metal report" which is pretty much Ralf talking about PF and metal. There is also a little thing about which wrestlers they like toward the end of this EXTREMELY short segment. Fun nonetheless.
There is also a half hour bootleg section that shows (wait for it....) bootleg footage from various concerts around the world. Mixed in with this is some professionally shot snippets of live footage and also the recording of the "black sun" album. The recording bit was cool but it could have been longer.
So to close this up, if you're a PF fan and have never seen them live get this. If you're a PF fan and HAVE seen them live get this. If you aren't familiar with PF but love heavy metal get this!
Easily one of the best metal DVDs out there. Don't miss out on it!!!
Metal, the way it should be!.......2003-12-16
Five minutes with this DVD and any metal head will see why Primal Fear is one of the world's best metal bands. Ralf Scheepers is easily the most talented vocalist in the business, and this DVD certainly proves it.
After seeing Primal Fear live, I was very proud to see that there is no "BS" with this band. Every note is sang, and played just the way it was on their albums. This dvd is no different. History of Fear definitely does this incredible band justice, truly showing their talent on every track. In fact, I enjoyed this DVD as much as Hammerfall's "The Templar Renegade Crusades", and Iron Maiden's "Rock in Rio", and that's certainly saying something.
The dvd is pretty much a concert disc, showing many live performances. Sure, a bunch of goofy backstage scenes would have been great, but with 150+ minutes of live metal, what more can you ask for? Some of my favorite moments were seeing "Living for Metal" "Under your Spell" and "Eye of an Eagle" live, in all their glory.
Do yourself a favor. Buy "History of Fear" and enjoy every minute of its headbanging glory. Primal Fear rules.
The best music DVD I have seen so far........2003-10-20
I recently bought this DVD and I have to say that in terms of onstage performance, it is the best Music DVD I own; even better than such masterworks as Iron Maiden's "Rock in Rio", Manowar's "Blood in Brazil" and Dio's "Evil or Divine".
The two factors which make Primal Fear stand out from the crowd when playing live are the "tightness" of the band (it would be nearly impossible to get any tighter) and Ralf and Matt's vocal work. Having a backing singer who is of lead singer standard himself really makes the band excell. Henny also provides better backing vocals than most guitarists would and this adds to the effect.
In terms of extras, the videos are excellent and bootleg section is good, but some more interviews would have been a good idea.
You also get a Live CD with this DVD, making it great value for money.

An Excellent Film.......1999-11-20
I viewed this film at home and then showed it to my high school chemistry students during a unit on water-borne disease. The students found it quite moving and there was much "sniffling" and wiping of eyes during scenes where children were shown suffering in the iron lungs. An excellent film for any biology or social science class to show the students the human side of a disease.

Wonderful Account of a Bittersweet History.......2004-05-08
This is a wonderful telling of the bittersweet history of one facet of the Holocaust. Melissa Hacker does an amazing job of weaving her very personal account of being the child of a Kindertransport survivor with the larger story of the project that saved the lives of a few thousand Jewish children from the Nazi deathcamps.
It just so happens that my family was friends with the Hackers in the 1970s and we even took a trip on the Rhine river together. Little did we know at the time the emotional weight that trip must have had on Ruth (Ms. Hacker's mother). But I write this as an ubiased viewer: my husband shed more tears watching this movie than I.

Description
In World War II, more than 110,000 Japanese-Americans were forced into relocation camps across the US. This film traces the lives of the 16,000 people who were sent to two camps in southeast Arkansas, one of the most racially segregated places in America at that time. Through interviews with the internees and local citizens, the program explores how the influx of outsiders overwhelmed and exposed racial tensions within the southern communities.
Customer Reviews:
A Different Angle on WWII Japanese Internment .......2006-02-20
The internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II resonates today in more ways than one. Having read and viewed other material on Japanese-American internment, I found this film's slightly different emphasis on Arkansas refreshing. Arkansas, like many States in the American South, rigidly enforced segregation policies designed to keep blacks and whites separate. The arrival of 12,000 Japanese in Southeast Arkansas during WWII threw into question not only conceptions of what it meant to be American but what it meant to be white or black.
Among the more memorable parts of this documentary was the tensions surrounding Mainland and Hawaiian Japanese Americans in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team ("Go For Broke"). When fighting over cultural differences threatens the integrity of the unit, a group of 442nd men (including U.S. Senator Dan Inouye) are sent to the Arkansas camps to witness the conditions (barracks, barb wire, and maching gun posts) that the mainland Japanese Americans enlisted under. It was the sight of fellow Japanese-Americans behind barb wire, more than anything, that really motivated the 442nd to overcome their differences and prove their American loyalty in battle.
Aside from the Arkansas experience and the Hawai'i-Mainland Japanese differences, there's not a whole lot of new material covered here. "Time of Fear" is nonetheless memorable, if only because it throws a refreshingly different angle on the subject of Japanese American Internment.
I'd recommend this for any high school or college class studying Asian Americans, World War II, and/or Race in American History.
Arkansas-specific Internment.......2005-10-14
Let me start with what was new and unexpected. Unlike other works on this tragic topic, this focused specifically on one state's Japanese-American concentration camps: that of Arkansas. This film did not limit itself to the white-yellow binary: it covered the role of African Americans on this topic. I almost screamed when I learned that the Arkansas governor said, "We can't let the Japanese come to our colleges, because then we'd have to let the blacks do the same." (Luckily, I don't punch TV screens!) Finally, this film mentions that at times locals accused Japanese Americans of being unfairly advantaged in the camps!
Outside of that, this was pretty much the standard work on American internment. For those who do not know about this dark era, it will be informative; for those who do know, this will be standard fair. It was amusing to see a Caucasian academic with an accent just like Bill Clinton's. This documentary interviews both Japanese-American men and women. You would think celebrities would appear first, but George Takei does not show up until the end of the work. Takei's presence may be a reason for trekkies of any ethnic background to see the work.
I think this PBS American Experience series would be sorely lacking if it didn't cover this matter. Still, other episodes opened my eyes to things I never ever knew. This one did not. It would be good viewing materials for high school and junior high American history classes, especially those with large Japanese-American student bodies.

Two days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, Bill Moyers began interviewing people about the significance of what had happened. It may have seemed too soon for such reflection, yet one could make the case that thoughts expressed by Moyers's guests in the immediate aftermath entirely outclass the countless hours of news and analysis shows that followed. The interviews are vintage Moyers, who sits and quietly speaks one-on-one with such people as author Robert J. Lifton, Harvard religion professor Diana Eck, theatrical director Julie Taymor, and Afghan-American editor and writer Tamim Ansary (whose passionate explanatory e-mail about Afghanistan was widely circulated on the Internet soon after the attacks). People talk of good and evil, religion and mythology, heroism and humanity, all with a level of nuance never to be found on the cable network shoutfests. No one raises his or her voice, yet much of what is said will resonate in one's thoughts after the TV tube has grown cold. --Robert J. McNamara
Product Description
Just 36 hours after an unspeakable national tragedy, award-winning journalist Bill Moyers began a unique dialogue with an unparalleled and diverse group of guests. Each of eight interviews explores both our personal and public experiences, moving us through fear, anger, and grief on toward healing and hope. Together, they shed light and perspective on a very dark moment in America's history.
Originally broadcast on PBS, Moyers brings together key experts to provide valuable insight and perspective on the social and political implications of this tragedy. Among his guests are best selling author Robert Jay Lifton - who describes the apocalyptic ambitions of Osama Bin Laden and Tamim Ansary, the Afghan-American author of "the email heard round the world." With additional commentary from choreographer Bill T. Jones, Broadway director and designer Julie Taymor, and others these poised and clear voices soothe a wounded yet resilient nation.
Both intimate and timeless, The 11th of September: Moyers In Conversation creates a collective and moving experience. Asia snapshot, these conversations encapsulate our nation's reactions at a specific moment, yet remaina testament to the indomitable human spirit for all time.

An uplifting gem.......2004-11-02
I found this disc to be thought-provoking, uplifting and (typical of Moyers) varied in its approach to the problem of 9/11 and global terrorism. It is NOT for those who want sensational news clips or sound-bite style presentation. There are no gimmicks, merely insightful commentary on the subject at hand from the different perspectives of the individuals interviewed. A pleasant surprise and relief from "THE FACTS"...
seeking answers in the aftershocks.......2002-12-18
I think this is an important video. The whole nation was reeling after 9/11, trying to make sense of the horror. This is a snapshot of our thoughts as we grappled with our confusion and fear. I've overdosed on the gratuitous, sensationalist replays of collapsing towers and shots of the aftermath--every time a network rebroadcasts the scene, I feel they are cheapening this very personal and loaded experience of 9/11. I want to move past the horrificness and move on to understanding how human beings are capable of such monstrosities. In a world so volatile, in a country run by trigger-happy leaders, the discussions sparked by the different people interviewed, the various thinkers (a dancer, academic, the Afghan citizen whose email went round the world), their ideas and shared struggle to understand WHY and HOW 9/11 happened is every bit as important as the individual stories of heroism, which get a lot more space in the media. You don't watch these interviews for sentimental value. You watch them because you see the world around you teetering on chaos, and you desperately want to understand the hate and malice in hopes that it will keep us from falling into the abyss.
Are we sure this is really Bill Moyers?.......2002-03-13
I was pretty sorely disappointed in this disc. I expected to see news footage or even accounts from people who spoke above a monotone. Instead, it consisted of a collection of very boring individuals "experts" and such, sharing their thoughts, some of it pertinent, some of it just rambling.
I am giving it a one star rating based on the fact that I liked the cover art on the disc. That's about all I liked, though.
Bill Moyers is normally a great journalist. Why he would choose to attach his name to this disc is beyond me. Perhaps he could have collected different guests, people who are speaking from real life and not from text book theories, and then it would be worth the purchase price.
I would save my money on this....nnless you have chronic insomnia, which this disc is SURE to cure as it put me right to sleep both times I tried to watch it in it's entirety.
I'm glad I didn't buy it.......2002-02-07
I was glad I borrowed this DVD before buying it. It's just Bill Moyers talking to people about September 11th and their opinions. I want to collect as much as I can in regards to September 11th for my childern and their childern. It's part of our history just like Pearl Harbor. This DVD is not worth buy.
