5 out of 5 stars Johnnie Taylor - Live in Dallas.......2007-01-13

In spite of shortcomings noted elsewhere in various reviews, this dvd deserves 5 stars because of the greatness of the music. Johnnie Taylor was one of the greatest singers in the universe, and the band here is outstanding. The musicians get into a groove and never let up. This one of my all-time favorite musical dvds by anybody. It is a true desert island disc. A must have for all fans of JT and southern soul music.

I am pleased with Johnnie Taylor, Live In Dallas, and will purchas other live DVD's of Jhonnie Taylor when they are available.

2 out of 5 stars J T ..... all good........production NOT!.......2006-03-29

I grew up listening to Johnnie Taylor from back in the late 60's and up until he passed away. I have just about all his music. I never actually seen JT perform live in concert so it was a true blessing to see him on DVD. I will say that a much better product could of been delivered for all the many fans of JT. I will also add that this true soul legend deserved atleast a tribute on this DVD. Sound and picture were good and that's about it. JT RIP.

3 out of 5 stars JOHNNIE IS JOHNNIE "DOING HIS OWN THING".......2005-09-19

Mr. Taylor has a gifted voice and style, you can never take that away from him. After seeing him on 3 different occasions and talking with musicians who's played with him, I have come to realize, that Johnnie will sing the songs that's pleasing to him, regardless of what the crowd wishes to hear. It was once said that he was tired of singing the same 8 songs over and over, so if you want to hear "I believe In You", Cheaper to Keep Her, Disco Lady, Running out of Lies, Carless with Our Love... you won't be hearing those here, and what a shame cause that would have made this DVD a true treasure since we don't have the man himself anymore. However, these are the songs you will hear: 1. Who's Makin' Love 2. Little Bluebird 3. It's Still Called The Blues 4. Just Because 5. Wall To Wall 6. Medley: Love Bones, Stop Doggin' Me Around, Take Care Of Your Homework, Hello Sundown, Steal Away 7. I Don't Want To Lose Your Love 8. Jody's Got Your Girl 9. It's September 10. Stormy Monday Medley 11. I'm Changing, it's worth it just to get a glimpse of a True Soul singer in his own space and time.

2 out of 5 stars Shame on Malaco!.......2005-03-12

The late, great Johnnie Taylor deserved better than this poor excuse of a DVD by his record label MALACO.

Don't get me wrong, seeing JT live on stage while he was still in his prime (this concert took place 11 years before he died of a massive cardiac arrest) is a treat.
However, that's all you get!

No liner notes, no extras, not even a post-humous tribute to the Soul Philosopher.
Seeing as this DVD wasn't released until late 2004, you'd think MALACO would have, at the very minimal least, added some extra footage of JT...interviews, other concert footage, anything to make what remains the ONLY DVD of JT a true collectors item.

This DVD is really as bare bones as they come!
No intro, no previews of other, soon to come, releases.
The program starts and were it not for JT having been in great voice that night, this would be an outright waste of money.

JT himself serves as the sole savior of this ill-produced DVD...the man was one of the greats and that comes through in shining colors throughout this DVD.

The sound is also good as is the entire production of the concert. At least they got that part right.

Were JT still with us, I would still be a little miffed at the lack of additional chapters, but seeing as JT has since joined his friends in Soul Heaven, I really, really expected more.

Perhaps MALACO will one day redeem themselves and release a tributary DVD of this Soul legend. I doubt it since I happen to have first hand knowledge of how incredibly frugal and out of touch with times that company happens to be.

Anyhow, JT is preserved for posterity.....if only it could have been a more appropriately produced DVD.

2 stars....that's all I can give it. 5 stars to JT but Malaco really dropped the ball on this one.

Description

After taking the world by storm with their debut album "Use Once and Destroy", Superjoint Ritual embarked on a US tour that was nothing short of amazing. For the lucky fans who attended these gigs, it will be something they speak about for years. On a hot night in Dallas, the cameras rolled and the intensity, brutality and fury that is Superjoint was unleashed. With behind-the-scenes footage, the full concert and 5.1 surround sound, this video is a must have for heavy music fans everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Great chunky sound Big guitar's screaming vocals.......2006-11-06

Great Dvd a must buy for any old Pantera fan who wants to see what the frontman is up to as of somewhat recent. Buy it!!,.,. Plus Great Camera footage,, angle shots!! all the way Heavy freakin; metal hah Peep the obnoxiousness is Phils stage presence <>

3 out of 5 stars Not CBGB.......2006-04-01

I read the review on this dvd and thought i'd be stupid not to buy it. However i was pretty dissapointed by it. Dont get me wrong. Superjoint are amazing but compared to the second (CBGB) dvd, this one just doesnt give you what you want. I know it came out before the other one but it just doesnt have the atmosphere. First off, the camera work is really annoying. It flashes continuously to make it look like the venue is packed but you can see its pretty empty so you dont get a vibe from it, also it tries to go with the music and that gets pretty annoying too. Still the perfomance is great, and unlike the other review i think phil's voice is up to scratch. The little features of the band are cool but take away from the gig because they are just stuck in between songs. On the other dvd you get to see more of the band and you get a better selection of songs, and phils rants between songs are pretty heart warming whereas the ones on here are a bit stupid. Overall, you just dont get a good vibe from the gig and its not up close and personal like the CBGB performance.

5 out of 5 stars When will a concert be live in Winnsboro.......2006-03-24

I'm jealous cause all the music concerts always be live in big cities like Dallas Texas. No concert ever come's to small towns like mine which is called Winnsboro. It's just boring.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Short of 5 Stars.......2005-09-16

What a great DVD this is. I have yet to buy a Superjoint Ritual album, but after seeing this i definitely will be getting my hands on at least one of the two, or possibly both. I got this DVD as a gift for my birthday at the start of this year, and after watching it i was that impressed. I was kicking myself for not already owning their albums. Phil Anselmo's vocals are way more harsh than anything he did in Pantera, and although i wouldn't go as far to say that the music is way heavier than Pantera, it's at the very least equal in that respect..just alot thrashier, and alot faster. In almost every single song too, it slows down either halfway, or in the chorus, to a chugging riff that is absolute mosh-material.

On this DVD you get a full concert. The camera-work is great. The full set-list is as follows, for those who would like to know..

1. It Takes No Guts
2. The Alcoholik
3. F**k Your Enemy
4. Everyone Hates Everyone
5. 4 Songs (..I'm not sure exactly if this is actually one full song or 4 short songs, but there are short breaks inbetween that make me think that it's the latter of the two..)
6. Drug Your Love
7. Haunted / Hated
8. Anti-faith
9. Ozena (Possibly my favorite song on here..)
10. Starvation Trip
11. Superjoint Ritual (Possibly my second favorite song on here..Phil's throat must hurt afterwards..)

The extras here feature 2 videos.. "F**k Your Enemy", and the pretty amusing "The Alcoholik". All up, the full concert goes for just over an hour. And let me tell you, it just does not get boring. Every single song has at least one highlight in it. The whole crowd really get into the mayhem too..footage here and there of the crowd show the moshpit, and people pushing into eachother etc, etc. In and out of most of the songs, there are also interviews with each member. But don't expect 10 minute interviews or anything..they're sort of a letdown, because they go for around 3 or 4 minutes at the most. But at least it keeps the energy and intensity of the concert alive, in a way, if you know what i mean. The interviews alone are pretty interesting. Also, Phil Anselmo introduces each song as they go..making the crowd roar with approval each time.

So basically, this is easily a must-have for fans of Superjoint Ritual. I also think it's a must-have for fans of any of the band members too, because in my case..never having heard anything by Superjoint Ritual..this still paid off bigtime, probably because i'm already a pretty big fan of Phil Anselmo and of Jimmy Bower too. And whatever they seem to touch turns to gold, in my opinion. This DVD is an easy 5/5.

On a side note..i can't wait to hear new material from Down. I hear a new album is being written as we speak.

5 out of 5 stars YOU CAN'T GIVE ENOUGH STARS FOR SOMETHING AS GENIUS AS THIS.......2005-07-23

I finally got around to getting this. I saw these guys in Philly around the time it was filmed , right around the time when Down II was unleashed. Having seen SJR after Down and Pantera back in their heyday, I must criticize all the boneheads for a moment who write reviews about SJR and Phil being "too wasted" during the show. Well, to tell you the truth, self-proclaimed Heavy Metal know-it-alls, this is him! The band is "SUPER "JOINT" RITUAL! Every member of the band is as intense as the next! They are ALL superb musicians doing what they do best, grinding out the heaviest metal to date. Not to single-out Phil like everyone else (they are a "band" and Phil is the "singer"), I will comment that there is nothing lacking in his efforts here. He is a showman unlike many other metal acts of our time. He is and never was someone who even remotely comes across that he doesn't enjoy what he does up there. Like III says in the interview, he gives it a thousand % and doesn't expect any less from his bandmates! My opinion is this, want a DVD that brings you to the edge of the pit and allows you all the best views and sounds of the show you wish you had when you were there, buy this. I can't end this review without acknowledging the band itself outside of this DVD presentation. Listen here, seeing this band live and seeing this DVD go hand-in-hand. Yes seeing one or the other is fine, but having seen both IS SO MUCH MORE! Let's just hope SJR hasn't given up on us after senseless tragedy of 12/8/04 ... RIP DIMER, LONG-LIVE SUPER JOINT!
