Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future, Children of Men is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come. Set in the crisis-ravaged future of 2027, and based on the atypical 1993 novel by British mystery writer P.D. James, the anxiety-inducing, action-packed story is set in a dystopian England where humanity has become infertile (the last baby was born in 2009), immigration is a crime, refugees (or "fugees") are caged like animals, and the world has been torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism, and political rebellion. In this seemingly hopeless landscape of hardscrabble survival, a jaded bureaucrat named Theo (Clive Owen) is drawn into a desperate struggle to deliver Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), the world's only pregnant woman, to a secret group called the Human Project that hopes to discover a cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency, Theo, Kee, and their secretive allies endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare, and director Alfonso Cuaron (with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) capture the action with you-are-there intensity. There's just enough humor to balance the film's darker content (much of it coming from Michael Caine, as Theo's aging hippie cohort), and although Children of Men glosses over many of the specifics about its sociopolitical worst-case scenario (which includes Julianne Moore in a brief but pivotal role), it's still an immensely satisfying, pulse-pounding vision of a future that represents a frightening extrapolation of early 21st-century history. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Amazingly nonsense.......2007-07-08

The story line is very good...But does the director and script writer uderstand the meaning of word "synergy"? Perfect example of not doing that is the result-Children of Men

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, but find out for yourself..........2007-07-07

Confusing? Depressing? This movie isn't for a small child who would be confused by fast-moving plots (this one hardly moves that fast anyway) or for people who believe every human is inherently good and will remain so even in a crisis.

Does this movie overbaringly push a politcal agenda? Perhaps. Yet this film, like all movies, only has the meaning that the viewer perceives. What I took from this film was how ugly the world really is, and how people will not stay civil when it all hits the fan. Is that depressing? It certainly is, but that's the world we live in.

The movie is not without hope. The main character has succumbed to the bleakness of the world's current situation, but is given a new reason to fight on and persevere. The last scene were Theo and the girl are decending the stairs is breathtaking.

Nowadays, it's hard to escape any form of entertainment with a political agenda, either real or perceived. But take from this movie something else.

For those who thought this movie was too depressing, OPEN YOUR EYES. Watch and read the news. I'm not talking about the big things like war and famine around the world. I mean the the small events that take place in your own country. The violent crimes, the senseless fighting, the loss of life. It's everywere, and unfortunately, it's human nature.

The movie itself is amazing. The cinematography is breathtaking. It was compared to Saving Private Ryan and rightly so. The first action scene in the car and the last chase through the "fugee" camp is done with one camera and in continuous action. This really captivates the veiwer and makes him feel like he's actually in the scene. Great sound and even better in HD-DVD.

This film has it all: action, drama, comedy, everything for every taste. See it for yourself and take from it what suits you best. But don't be so narrow and watch it only with political eyes. Go deeper than this, and find what its really about.

1 out of 5 stars Dark Dark dark and depressing.......2007-07-06

This was a waste of money. I don't discount the fine acting talents of the stars, but it was a depressing story, no matter who was starring in it. I thought there would be some hope, but the ending was too ambiguous and the whole movie was dark and depressing.

3 out of 5 stars Overrated .......2007-07-03

Interesting film but wildly overrated by the critics. Confusing and ambiguous story line trips up a pretty good cast and produces a mediocre science fiction film. I am afraid that all this film really foreshadows is more bad movies to come. This film does not, by any stretch of the imagination, compare to Sci-Fi classics like Blade Runner. Save your money and watch it on cable.

1 out of 5 stars I hated this movie.......2007-07-03

Bleak, weak story line..everyone is always running. very confusing and depressing and I thought it made NO sense even though I understood what was trying to be said. The ending was a joke. Don't waste your money or time! I didn't even want to give it one star! One of the worse movies I ever saw!

Critics and controversy aside, The Da Vinci Code is a verifiable blockbuster. Combine the film's huge worldwide box-office take with over 100 million copies of Dan Brown's book sold, and The Da Vinci Code has clearly made the leap from pop-culture hit to a certifiable franchise. The leap for any story making the move from book to big screen, however, is always more perilous. In the case of The Da Vinci Code, the plot is concocted of such a preposterous formula of elements that you wouldn't envy screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the man tasked with making this story filmable. The script follows Dan Brown's book as closely as possible while incorporating a few needed changes, including a better ending. And if you're like most of the world, by now you've read the book and know how it goes: while lecturing in Paris, noted Harvard Professor of Symbology Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is summoned to the Louvre by French police to help decipher a bizarre series of clues left at the scene of the murder of the chief curator. Enter Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), gifted cryptologist. Neveu and Langdon team up to solve the mystery, and from there the story is propelled across Europe, ballooning into a modern-day mini-quest for the Holy Grail, where secret societies are discovered, codes are broken, and murderous albino monks are thwarted… oh, and alternative theories about the life of Christ and the beginnings of Christianity are presented too, of course. It's not the typical formula for a stock Hollywood thriller. In fact, taken solely as a mystery, the movie almost works--despite some gaping holes--mostly just because it keeps moving. Brown's greatest trick was to have the entire story take place in one day, so the action is forced to keep moving, despite some necessary pauses for exposition. As a screen couple, Hanks and Tautou are just fine together but not exactly memorable; meanwhile Sir Ian McKellen's scenery-chewing as pivotal character Sir Leigh Teabing is just what the film needed to keep it from taking itself too seriously. The whole thing is like a good roller-coaster ride: try not to think too much about it--just sit back and enjoy the trip. --Daniel Vancini

On The DVD
The DVD extras on a film as popular as The Da Vinci Code should be plentiful, and this version doesn't skimp. With over 90 minutes of special features, including ten behind-the-scenes featurettes, there's a lot here to explore beyond the film itself. The question is, is there anything new here that we haven't heard before, in all the hype, pseudo-documentaries, and controversy surrounding the movie, to make it worthwhile? For most viewers, the answer will be "yes." Essentially, if you like the movie, if you enjoyed the book, you will get a lot out of them.

Just as the movie is intended to make the book come to life, the DVD extras should make the film come to life by pointing the audience into the world of the filmmakers, connecting the dots between print and film, and for the most part they do just that. The extras here range from the typical look behind-the-scenes to more in-depth features on the supporting characters, the locations, and the Mona Lisa herself. "First Day on the Set with Ron Howard" features the director gushing about the opportunity to film in the Louvre and work with Tom Hanks again (the two worked together before on Splash and Apollo 13). It's a short piece that doesn't reveal much beyond making an attempt to share Howard's excitement (with the "Gee, I really loved working with him/her on this project" that you hear in every such featurette), but viewers might enjoy seeing how the stage was set up in the famous museum, down to the spike tape on the floor showing actors where to hit their marks. The Filmmaking Experience, Parts 1 and 2 further explores the creative and technical aspects of the filmmaking process. A Conversation with Dan Brown starts out feeling like a puff-piece (the man who wrote this book got started at age 5 with a story called The Giraffe, The Pig, and the Pants on Fire. "It was a thriller," he says.) and unfortunately it doesn't go very deep into much of anything of interest. But on the other hand, this isn't 60 Minutes here; it's intended to give viewers a better sense of the man behind the franchise, which it does. Much of the footage from this interview is sprinkled throughout some of the other featurettes. Meanwhile, the character behind the franchise, Robert Langdon, is examined in his own featurette, as is Sophie Neveu. The cool thing here is getting under the skin of the actors to see how they approached the characters, knowing that most of the movie-going public already has formed their own ideas about the characters from the book.

The most interesting extras are the featurettes that focus on the history behind the mystery. Or is it the mystery behind the history? Either way, the first one on the Mona Lisa, and the second featurette on the many codes and symbols that are hidden throughout the movie balance out the remainder of the extras nicely by demonstrating the sense of intrigue, mystery, and game-playing adventure that made The Da Vinci Code so popular in the first place. --Daniel Vancini

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Only good if you've read the book.......2007-07-09

I would have had no idea what was going on in this movie had I not read the book first! It follows the story of the book fairly well, but it doesn't develop any characters, basically assuming that you know who these people are and their backgrounds.

Overall though, it was a good movie, but I thought the chemistry between Tom Hanks and the leading lady was quite bad. You just didn't feel anything between the two of them.

Would recommend reading the book!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent choice of actors.......2007-07-09

The movie was fast acting and very thought provoking. It all came down to what you believe in the end.

The French accents were hard to understand. For those who spoke French it was probably fascinating but I wish they either spoke clearly in English or just spoke French.

2 out of 5 stars So disappointed.......2007-07-01

I loved the book. And a book obviously is allowed to be wordy. But not a film. The film was literally like the actors sitting with a copy of the book saying lines. It was all words with bits of good scenery. Ian Mckellen once again saved the film and Audrey Tatou wasn't too bad. Left out some parts and I was not happy with the outcome

4 out of 5 stars A good short summary of the book.......2007-06-27

a good summary of the book, wish it had been longer, key aspects were left out.

4 out of 5 stars A good film and book........2007-06-12

I read the book on which this film is based before viewing the film. I was surprised that the film did, in fact, replicate the book.

There is some great acting in this film, & it does make the viewer think. Do I actually agree with the premise of the book and film? No.

This is not Tom Hanks' best film, but he did a good job of portraying the film's main character. I liked him better in films like "Forrest Gump" because these films truly show his versatility as an actor.

Even if you don't agree with its premise, I recommend that you read the book and then see this film.

The sunny streets of Brooklyn, just after World War II. A young would-be writer named Stingo (Peter MacNicol) shares a boarding house with beautiful Polish immigrant Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her tempestuous lover, Nathan (Kevin Kline); their friendship changes his life. This adaptation of the bestselling novel by William Styron is faithful to the point of being reverential, which is not always the right way to make a film come to life. But director Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men) provides a steady, intelligent path into the harrowing story of Sophie, whose flashback memories of the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp form the backbone of the movie. Streep's exceptional performance--flawless Polish accent and all--won her an Oscar, and effectively raised the standard for American actresses of her generation. No less impressive is Kevin Kline, in his movie debut, capturing the mercurial moods of the dangerously attractive Nathan. The two worlds of Sophie's Choice, nostalgic Brooklyn and monstrous Europe, are beautifully captured by the gifted cinematographer Néstor Almendros, whose work was Oscar-nominated but didn't win. It should have. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great central performance, but not a great film.......2007-06-30

I was drawn to watch this film because it has recently been nominated into the American Film Institute's Top 100 U.S. films. Bearing in mind the effusive reviews for the film already posted on Amazon.Com, I will probably get slated for only giving this film 3/5. Oh well.
The main good thing about this film is primarily Meryl Streep's amazing performance as the title character. Her performance is simply perfect. The emotional resonance of her performance is fantastic, her Polish accent is flawless, she even speaks Polish and German convincingly in the flashback scenes. It ranks alongside Falconetti's performance in Drayer's "Passion Of Joan Of Arc" as one of the greatest in cinema.
However, one performance does not a great film make. What else is great about this film? Keven Kline overcooks his role as Sophie's crazed lover: all charm and wild eyes, charisma turned on at will as if it comes from a tap. Peter MacNichol struggles to bring life to what is basically a dull character: he does his best with what is given to him in the role of the wide-eyed Southern boy.
Nestor Almendros's photography was fantastic in Mallick's "Days Of Heaven". In "Sophie's Choice" he approximates the former film's Autumnal sunlit ambience when the characters (occasionally) move outside: otherwise the camerawork is dull and uninvolving. The washed-out look of the Concentration Camp sequences is well done: approximating the muted colours in many Nazi films, it certainly works in its grimy, unappealing way.
Perhaps the key problem with the film is that it key moment of dramatic tension, the moment that gives the film its title and is the underlying cause of Sophie's toments is held back to the end of the film. Moreover, it is the kind of dramatic moment, having happened in the past, which offers no hope of salvation for either Sophie or the audience. It is sadly reduced to "just one of those" things which happens to people. The dramatic crux of the film is therefore fatally undermined.
The film is not that bad. It's just not an AFI Top 100 film. As a performance, Streep's is top-notch. It is just the film is too long, unfocused and finally unrewarding as either entertainment or dramatic lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless performance by Streep........2007-05-07

I watched Sophie's Choice for the first time last night, and despite having watched numerous Holocaust movies, this one truly touched me. Meryl Streep truly shines as the tragic Sophie, who lives with harrowing memories of her wartime experiences, whilst dealing with the complications of a tumultuous relationship with her live-in mad lover, played convincingly by Kevin Kline. Also of noteworthy performance is McNichol as Stingo, the aspiring writer who also narrates the story...his infatuation and later love for Sophie is true, even after realising Sophie's dark past. The most painful scenes were the flashbacks to Sophie's retelling of her wartime experiences. The "choice" that is the movie's title is rendered in an amazingly heartbreaking performance by Streep, one of cinema's most gut-wrenching scenes ever, and something I will never forget. Truly memorable!

5 out of 5 stars Streep's best performance.......2007-03-07

there is always that one performance in a actors career thats defined as there best and for the great Meryl Streep, her role as Holocaust survivor Sophie brilliantly conveys a person of heartbreak, riddled with guilt, and just so volnerable. pulling of a flawless polish accent, Streep plays Sophie, a polish immagrent who is haunted by her horrible past in WWII during the Holocaust and her stay at a concentration camp. Kevin Kline plays her temptatious lover Nathan and Peter MacNicol is Stingo, the man who Sophie and Nathan befriend. as Stingo becomes more involved in there life, he learns of Sophie's past and the horrible decision she had to make. Kline and MacNicole both provide excellent buffers as to not be outshined by Meryl Streep. the other great thing about this film is the cinamatography, it shifts very nicley from the comforts of Broklyn to the horrors of Europe. there are many great Holocaust films but Sophie's choice is definently at the top three along with Schindler's List and The Pianist. if you want to see a truley powerful film that will leave you heartbroken at the end then Sophie's Choice is the film

5 out of 5 stars Life as an ordeal of traumas.......2007-03-06

Sophie's Choice is a very powerful story of a woman whose strength did not desert her in imaginably some of the most traumatic moments in a person's life. Whether it was her abysmal life in German concentration camps or her Brooklyn existence with her schizophrenic boyfriend, Sophie did not have much to fall back up on with the exception of her inner core - a core that was so solid that it did not falter, did not waver, did not even flinch as she lost everything that a human heart deems precious. In the end she appears calm and poised even after having lost what every one holds dearest to heart - life.

In her Academy winning performance, Meryl Streep is peerless. Arguably it is one of the most powerful and yet sublime performances ever - an incredibly realistic portrayal of a character whose numerous shades of existence are impossibly difficult to depict. Streep delivers what easily can contend for an Academy among Academy winners. Other actors, the direction, the script and the milieu are all flawless but this movie belongs to Streep who stands head and shoulders above the rest in a performance bound to leave an indelible impact on the audience.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST ACTRESS...EVER!!.......2007-02-01

Meryl Streep is sensational. No words can do justice to describe how amazing her performance is.

This black-and-white film adaptation of Tennessee Williams's Southern gothic play is perhaps more famous for the rumored off-screen shenanigans of its stars than for its over-the-top repressed sexuality (only Williams could pull off that paradox, and pull it off he does). Supposedly, stars Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor battled for screen time; Hepburn warred very publicly with director Joseph Mankiewicz; and a postaccident Montgomery Clift relied heavily on painkillers and support from friend Taylor during the grueling shoot. Even this, however, cannot top the events of the film itself, revolving around the unseen playboy Sebastian and his mysterious death, which has something to do with young boys, a decadent European vacation, and Taylor in a provocative wet, white bathing suit. To give away the plot would spoil the fun, but suffice it to say that what Taylor saw was so horrible it drove her nuts, and Sebastian's mother (Hepburn) wants her to have a lobotomy in order to keep it from coming out; Clift is brought in to do the procedure. It's all a hoot and a holler, but as played by the two leading ladies (both of whom nabbed Oscar nominations), it's also compelling, chilling, and utterly gothic. Taylor gives a fierce performance, as the climaxing monologue that reveals Sebastian's "secret" rests entirely on her shoulders, and Hepburn plays brilliantly against type as Sebastian's manipulating, overbearing mother. Only Clift, saddled with a dreary character in charge of plot exposition, fails to deliver. Adapted by Gore Vidal. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fine movie, but slow at the beginning..........2007-07-01

I like the movie and the acting is mostly great. My only problem is with Montgomery Clift, who is slightly stiff in this movie, yet I still like him. Elizabeth Taylor and Katherine Hepburn give stellar performances.

Basically, Cathy (Taylor) is locked up in a mental institution with Clift as her psychiatrist. He needs to find out the shocking truth of why her cousin died the summer before. Her aunt Violet (Hepburn) wants her to have a lobotomy so the truth cannot come out. I won't say what happens, but the end is satisfying. I'd watch this again.

5 out of 5 stars Suddenly Last Summer.......2007-06-26

A lurid Southern Gothic tale adapted by Gore Vidal from a one-act Tennessee Williams play, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's "Suddenly, Last Summer" is a trifle campy and overheated, but rich with smart, biting dialogue. Hepburn is haughty and indomitable as an overprotective mother, while Taylor is rivetingly sensual even in apoplectic fits of distress-witness the climactic flashback scene. Mankiewicz handles themes of forbidden desire and depravity with consummate skill, making this a memorable "Summer" indeed.

5 out of 5 stars really puts the "gothic" into Southern Gothic..........2007-06-10

SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER is one of the strongest Tennessee Williams film adaptations, and that is due in no small part to Gore Vidal's fiery screenplay and the first-rate main players of Taylor, Hepburn and Clift.

The story opens in 1937. Eccentric and wealthy Southern widow Mrs Violet Venable (Katharine Hepburn) enlists the services of prolific mental health surgeon Dr. Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift). Cukrowicz specialises in performing the revolutionary frontal lobotomy procedure on those patients whose entire lives are consumed by their illnesses.

Mrs Venable introduces Cukrowicz to her troubled young niece, Catherine Holly (Elizabeth Taylor). Ever since Catherine accompanied Violet's dead son Sebastian on his last trip to Europe, Catherine has been plagued by fearful fits of insanity. In return for some important funding for his surgery, Mrs Venable wants Catherine to be the next patient for Cukrowicz.

But what exactly happened to Sebastian on that fateful final trip...and why does Mrs Venable desperately want Catherine to forget it...?

Here in SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, a horrifying journey into sweat-stained asylums and heavily-veiled secrets, Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn deliver tour-de-force performances. A lot of people still find Montgomery Clift somewhat lacking here, but a lot of that does come back to the character he plays, who is very much overshadowed by the two women. There is also some fine work from Mercedes McCambridge as Catherine's weak-willed mother.

Taylor was nominated for an Academy Award (in addition to Hepburn), but failed to win, partly because this was during the period when her tumultuous private life essentially got her blackballed; though she did manage to grab the Golden Globe for her performance--in direct competition with Hepburn.

SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER remains a searing and shocking movie experience. If you have never seen it, do yourself a favour and buy it today. You'll be riveted from beginning to end.

The DVD includes a bonus video montage of stills; talent profiles for the main players, and the trailer for "28 Days". (Single-sided, dual-layer disc).

4 out of 5 stars Don't wish for this kind of summer vacation!.......2007-05-15

Suddenly, Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, and Katherine Hepburn was quite a provactive film for 1959. Themes of homosexuality, cannibalism, and implied incest makes this film interesting right up 'til the very end. You won't believe the shocking truth about the unseen and unheard Sebastian. Catherine (Taylor) and Sebastian were cousins, during a summer vacation, something horrific happened to Sebastian, and it traumatizes poor Catherine into a mental hospital. Catherine's aunt, Mrs. Venable (Hepburn) wants her lobotimzed, she is so desperate to hide the truth about her son, she'll do anything not to let her son's private life come out. Fascinating performance from Hepburn and while Clift is great to look at, his performance suffers due to the fact he was relying heavy on pills and booze to help through the shoot (he was in a car crash three years prior to filming this movie, he was in a lot of physical pain). Anyway, you'll either love or loathe this film but it's defintely gonna leave you shocked in your seat. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars One of the Scariest Films I've seen.......2007-04-05

"Suddenly, Last Summer" - is one of the scariest films I've seen. Directed in 1959 by Joseph Mankievitz and based on one of Tennessee Williams' plays, it deals with very disturbing and uncomfortable subjects. Elizabeth Taylor is sensational, playing Catherine, the girl who may have lost her mind after having witnessed her cousin's bizarre death that occurred "suddenly, last summer" during the vacation. Katherine Hepburn is magnificent as his adoring mother who wants the disturbing memories been surgically removed from the girl's memory.

Production design, set decorations, and costumes are absolutely stunning. Both, Hepburn and Taylor received very deserving Oscar nominations for the best leading performance.

Based on true events, this "exciting, engrossing [and] breathtaking" (The Hollywood Reporter) action-adventure stars OscarÂ(r) winners* Cliff Robertson and George Chakiris as two WWII fliers pitted against the Nazis in a do-or-die mission. Filled with "blazing, pulse-pounding and realistic air-fighting footage" (Boxoffice), 633 Squadron will "put your heart in your throat" (Los Angeles Times)! 1944. Allied forces learn that the Nazis are planning to pummel England with an all-out rocket blitz. The only way to stop the threat is to send Mosquito bombers into narrow Norwegian fjords to create an avalanche that will crush the Nazis rocket-fuel plants. Can Wing Commander Roy Grant (Robertson) and the boys of the courageous 633 Squadron pull it off? And if so, will they live to reap the glory?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good flying scenes.......2007-02-19

Airplane buffs will find it worthwhile for the great flying scenes of Mosquitos. Another review said that the DVD was widescreen but mine wasn't and the product info indicates only 1.85:1 ratio. That is disappointing because a lot of the flying scenes are diminished in quality by being clipped to fit the TV screen. But the clipped version is still better than nothing.

3 out of 5 stars A serviceable war flick with some good action scenes..........2006-10-04

This is not a bad war flick, but it is not first rate either. The cast in my opinion seemed just a tad bit too nanchalant. People facing very great danger generally act differently than people out for a Sunday stroll, but in this film the protagonists really seem to lack the emotion of honest fear. This unreal emotional tenor was pretty consistent throughout the film.

Cliff Robertson, as usual, puts in a good performance, and the plot is serviceable--the Nazis are planning to bombard England and possibly the D-Day landings with V2 rockets, so 633 Squadron must bomb the rocket fuel factory in Norway. The mission is not unrealistic, and the film seems to be technically pretty accurate. Once again though, the characters all just seem to be indifferent to the fact that they are on something approaching a suicide mission.

The film moves along at a reasonable pace, holding the viewer's interest. However, the ending is a total letdown (no spoiler here) and could have been much better.

Overall, an OK film for a rainy afternoon or whatnot.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough of those Mossies.......2006-02-14

The stars of this film are those wonderful De Havilland
Mosquitoes. What a plane! Made of wood, used both
as a fighter and a bomber. Josef Goebbels cursed them
when they were used by RAF Bomber Command's Light Night
Striking Force when the bombed Berlin every night for
weeks on end towards the end of the war...they flew so
fast and high they had very light casualties and prevented
the Berliners from getting any sleep, sometimes carrying out
two raids per night. This film shows them in their role
as maneuverable light bombers in their daring raid.
In my opinion, the story is a little thin, but watching
the Mossies in action makes up for it. We see the stereotypical
"ice-water-in-his-veins" senior RAF Officer played by Harry
Andrews, Cliff Robertson plays an American volunteer for the
RAF who doesn't want to get too emotionally involved in the war, but who eventually gets consumed by it, and we see a Sikh pilot and another pilot with a hook instead of a hand. In spite of their differences, the film shows the true-life dedication of these men in carrying out the mission, even when it endangers their lives.
As a little side-note, there is a scene near the end when the special bombs to be used on the raid are being towed to the aircraft, and at the very top of the screen we see a then-contemporary 1960's car go zooming by!

5 out of 5 stars ...george lucas hang your head in shame!.......2005-09-20

I love this film from my childhood - yes some of the special effects look a bit ropey now, but that's more than made up for by the genuine footage of the real Mosquitos in action and Ron Goodwin's fantastic theme tune - easily one of the best movie themes ever.
( By the way, anyone unconvinced that George Lucas in fact got the idea for the Death Star scene fom this fine film might like to know the following: When Lucas originally devised Star Wars and was showing a rough cut print to the movie studio bigwigs, he hadn't had enough budget left for the SFX to show them the Death star finale. So instead, he intercut aerial dogfight footage from British WW2 movies including the Dambusters, the Battle Of Britain, and .....633 Squadron. Case closed!!

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a disappointment.......2005-06-27

This movie was not exactly what I'd hoped for, even though many movies of this genre from this era leave much to be desired in the first place. It began interestingly enough, and the scenes with the Mosquitos were impressive, however, the movie really trailed off at the end. The final assault on the target was less than gripping, and I highly doubt that it was the inspiration for the climactic scene of Star Wars. Worst of all was the use of models in some close up scenes. A little more effort could have been put into it, especially when it came to blowing them up. In the end, the character development wasn't all that great, nor was the acting. I guess if you're a fan of war movies, you should see this; but don't be fooled, it isn't all that great.

CIAO, PROFESSORE! is the story of an upper-class teacher from conservative Northern Italy who, due to a computer error, finds himself teaching third-grade truants at a ramshackle school in the south. Yet along the way, the earnest "professor" learns some valuable lessons when he begins to see life through the fresh, vibrant eyes of his scrappy young students! Don't miss this rambunctious comedy -- a film absolutely brimming with life!

5 out of 5 stars We need more movies like this one.........2007-03-20

This movie shows the big difference between Northern and Southern Italy, between the rich and the poor and what such difference does to children.
You will need to own this DVD because you will watch this movie many times.

3 out of 5 stars Molto sentimentality, ringrazia il Dio.......2006-12-05

CIAO PROFESSORE! wallows in sentimentality, and thank God, because without it, this would be a threadbare tale indeed. Our story: A third-grade teacher from the northern Italy is mistakenly assigned to a grubby, impoverished town named Corzano (which is actually "Arzano") near Naples.

Since Naples is the Italian Detroit, this is approximately akin to a teacher from a private school in upstate New York being assigned to an urban school in Flint, Michigan. Anyway, the teacher is shocked at the corruption, ignorance and venality that he sees. He hangs out with the kids in his classroom a bit (somehow managing to avoid utilizing any semblance of a lesson plan), and when the time comes to move on, he does so.

The director gets points for not varnishing over the town's grimy surfaces, and for having an ending that was actually less sentimental than I anticipated. Along the way, the storyline meanders about... well, actually, the word "meander" dignifies the plot with a momentum and purpose that it never achieves. But I will say this: The gap-toothed Italian urchins cast in this film are ridiculously cute, even when they are shouting coarse vulgarities at their teacher and each other... which is often.

SIDELIGHT: The film's original Italian title was "Io speriamo che me la cavo," which I'm assuming is an idiom of the Amalfi coast or perhaps something from the Neopolitan dialect, as I can make no sense of it.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2006-11-10

The story is magnificent. The children are adorable. The characters seem real.

3 out of 5 stars As chilling as it is charming.......2006-10-30

The charm of this film lies in the adaptation
of the essays written by 8 and 9-year old
schoolchildren in the Neapolitan suburb of
Arzano. That these were turned into dialog
so successfully is a triumph of screen-
writing-the originals are poignant, but not
so eloquent. Paolo Villagio is perfectly
cast as the professore from the North who
brings his Padanic sensibilities to the
Mezzogiorno. The clash of cultures comedy
is predictable but engaging.

The chilling aspect of the film is the
overwhelming pessimism that has pervaded
the outlook of children at such an early
age. It is most un-American and for us,
with our rosy views of childhood, disconcerting.

It's worth pointing out that if you're
trying to learn Italian by watching movies,
(not a bad approach at that) this may not
be right for you. The Neapolitan dialect
is difficult for many Italian speakers
and is different enough from what you would
need to know in other parts of Italy.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Watching Again And Again.......2006-07-13

This movie, the story of a teacher from an upscale area who is mistakenly assigned to a poverty-stricken school, is heartwarming and very funny. The acting is superb; the children are street kids who quickly win your heart as you get to know each one's distinct personality and life's story. I am trying to learn to speak Italian, so it serves a double purpose for me. I've watched a number of other Italian movies, which were enjoyable, but this one I watch again and again.

Sooner or later, the Mystery, Inc. gang had to take on Mexico's legendary Bigfoot equivalent, El Chupacabra, and that's precisely what they do in this entertaining, feature-length, Scooby-style investigation into the paranormal. Taking the Mystery Van south of the border, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo celebrate Day of the Dead festivities, which become less festive when a towering, glowering Chupacabra monster turns up to terrify both tourists and locals. The young snoops smell a conspiracy, and as they chase down clues their search for the truth leads them into sundry Mexican antiquities--ancient tombs and temples--where danger increases exponentially. There are the usual rituals: Our time-warped heroes run like the wind during encounters with alleged ghouls--particularly best-buds Shaggy and Scooby, when they aren't stuffing themselves with delicious Scooby Snacks. The animation is slicker and smoother--and more pleasing--than some other, recent Scooby-Doo features. --Tom Keogh

Description

3 out of 5 stars RENT THIS MOVIE.......2007-04-15

I love scooby so a wise word of advice: RENT THIS MOVIE. You will fall in love with it for a while and then never watch it again. I still love this movie but i can tell that most people would get bored after a little.

2 out of 5 stars A Decent Reunion At Best .......2005-04-19

The best way to begin is to show you where I stand. I think "Zombie Island" and "The Witch's Ghost" were excellent. I didn't much care for "Alien Invasion" or "Cyber Chase." I thought "The Legend of the Vampire" was a surprisingly good return to form. Onto chapter six. I can't really say this is one of Scooby's better movies. It kind of lacks the punch and surprises of "Zombie Island" and "The Witch's Ghost." Instead of the scarey surprises seen in the first two movies, this 6th chapter seems to rely more on silly chases. (But if you like the original episodes, you probably won't mind that so much.) Also, in my opinion, the script is weaker which means the movie seems very long and drawn out. ("Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost" don't seem to have many dull moments at all.) And, I won't say too much here, but when the mystery is uncovered and you really didn't get to know the culprit in the first place, a certain edge is missing. (In "Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost," we got to know the culprits very well in the 1st half of the movie, and therefore, there was a scarey sense of recognition when the plots were uncovered. The main reason I can give to watch this movie is that it was at least nice to the original line up from the early cartoons (Casey Kasem-Shaggy, Frank Welker-Fred, Heather North-Daphne, and Nicole Jaffee-Velmah) together again. The movie is worth some interest, but it's more of a long episode. If you like Scooby, this movie is watchable. But, don't expect the terror, intensity, and suspense of "Zombie Island," "The Witch's Ghost," or even "Legend of the Vampire."

3 out of 5 stars Seething mad at this film..........2005-01-24

Following a torrent of scooby movies to be released on video and DVD comes "Scooby-Doo an the Monster of Mexico," a film that highlights the legend of El Chupacabre, the Mexican Bigfoot. All the same, the Legend of the Vampire totally insulted the vampire myth, and so I didn't expect this new one to be any different. For that reason, I waited until it was being played on the cartoon network before watching...
Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico
Here's how it ranked...
Sound: 3.5/5
Like Legend of the Vampire, this movie used a lot of the songs from the original series, and a few new ones, but unlike Legend of the Vampire, the original songs in this series were stereotypical to the point of being annoying. Hence the additional half-point down from that film.
Graphics: 3/5
The same grade that I gave the graphics in "Legend of the Vampire" and for the same reasons. This movie uses graphics that were just not as good as they could, or logically should have been, and were barely even better than those seen in the original series.
Story Concept: 3/5
Slightly less cheesy than the concept in Legend of the Vampire, but no less cynical towards the supernatural. Scooby and the gang visit Mexico for no real reason except to be in time for a mexican halloween, where they encounter El Chupacabre, and find out that there's a plot brewing. But as in the last movie, and the series, there were no real monsters. This creature was really just some woman in an animatronic suit. That was annoying, and I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it for that reason alone.
Story Presentation: 3/5
Similar to Legend of the Vampire in presentation, cause and resolution, except that the pleasing scenes of Daphne and Velma hanging out as they did in that movie were dropped in favor of scenes of the entire gang as stereotypical (and somewhat insulting) mexican tourists. Like in Legend of the Vampire, there is no real monster, but to make things even worse, Velma makes some comments near the end about monster stories that really cheezed me off. Her acts of superhuman strength in mid-movie were balanced off by the fact that they spent that whole section of the film getting chased my monstrous stone statues and tourists; a part which had nothing to do with the rest of the movie, and was seemingly added just to extent the length. The words of many of the bit-part characters got on my nerves too. I simply found the movie distasteful. Yes, it's scooby, and like Legend of the Vampire, it's funny scooby material, but it was presented too much like an episode of the series, and not enough like something worth making a movie over.
Acting: 5/5
Perfect grade here, because who plays Velma, Shaggy, Daphne and Freddy like their original voice actors? Like in Legend of the Vampire, the original actors returned, but again, it's a shame they had to pick a film like this to lend their voices to.
All in All: 3.5/5
I enjoyed this movie more than alien invaders, but less than Legend of the Vampire, because honestly, Legend of the Vampire at least had A LITTLE nostalgia to it and didn't go overboard into cheesy behavior and unforgivable puns like this movie does. However, this movie had no thrills at all, and was really just a silly little romp through a country which was, at best, a caricature of a real one. Frankly, I wanted more from Scooby, but it would be a lie to say I had EXPECTED more. This film is most comparable to Legend of the Vampire in general mood, pace and result, but it's sillier and less respectful, so if that's your cup of tea, have a ball. Otherwise, you may join me in a boycott of this movie. Toodles.

4 out of 5 stars Scooby-Doo is a child's video hero........2004-05-03

I, for one, am glad that they keep making Scooby-Doo movies. The old stuff is still fun to watch and the new ones are great for me and my nearly 3 year old son. I have to admit though, El Chupacabra from this movie and the ghosts from The Boo Brothers is scary for my son to watch at nighttime so I don't offer it as a choice at night. In this day and age of foul mouths and violence on TV, I am glad to offer Scooby-Doo as a choice for my son.

4 out of 5 stars Scooby Doo Flies High.......2004-04-25

Kids loved this one. Catchy music, lovely Mexican setting, several character who seem "suspicious" when scary things start happening. The flying statues scene from the ruins kind of confused my kids, but added to the mystery - did the statues really come to life or was it another trick? (the mystery is solved in the end) Scooby Doo and his crew have endured since my childhood and their newer movies are still entertaining for kids today.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's not a movie, it's not a documental, it's in the middle, what makes it strange.......2007-05-25

Honestly I would give it about three and a half stars. I got the movie thinking about a drama, the plot according to what I had seen sounded interesting. Well, I was waiting for a drama movie, mostly fiction, and it is about two thirds documentary and a third of drama, and usually it has to be a really great person who puts two so different things on a same movie and it ends up being great... and this is not the case.

For the documentary part: Realistic interviews, variety of topic, very shallow on each topic though. Superficially informative.

As for the drama attempt: The idea of the plot is interesting, the execution of it is poor, but well, complex plots are not easy to get in 30 minutes, that is actually more of what this director gives to the plot itself. Besides, the dramatic scenes are pathetically SLOW.

Great soundtrack. I would like to have those songs, but most of them I had never heard them before, and I don't know the names or so, and Amazon doesn't have it either.
