Ringo Starr hits the road with another group of well-known rock accompanists in this 80-minute program, recorded in 2001 at Chicago's Rosemont Theater. Now, no one--most likely including Ringo himself--will claim that the former Beatle drummer is a great singer or artist, but he's an amiable bandleader with a clutch of solo hits to perform, including "Back Off Boogaloo," "Photograph," and "It Don't Come Easy," not to mention the Fabs' own "Yellow Submarine" and "With a Little Help from My Friends." Add to that the presence of rock dinosaurs Greg Lake (King Crimson, ELP), Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), and Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople), along with relative youngsters Howard Jones and Sheila E. (all of whom perform one or two of their own best-known songs), and you've got a recipe for a relaxed and appealing stroll down memory lane. DVD bonus features include a brief featurette about the band. --Sam Graham

He may be "only Ringo," but he's still a former Beatle and that gives Ringo Starr the right to do pretty much whatever he wants, which in this case means traveling the world with some of his favorite musicians, playing their hits and his. Introduced (in voiceover) by Paul McCartney, this 90-minute program includes 22 songs (plus one DVD bonus track) drawn from five All-Starr Band tours from 1989-2000. A splendid time was clearly had by all, from members of the Eagles, the Band, and Bruce Springsteen's group to Todd Rundgren, the Rascals' Felix Cavaliere, Procol Harum's Gary Brooker, Dr. John, Randy Bachman, and many more. Not a lot of surprises (what, you thought Ringo wouldn't sing "Yellow Submarine" and "With a Little Help from My Friends"?), but there are some unexpectedly compelling moments, like a fiery version of "Sunshine of Your Love" featuring Peter Frampton and Cream's Jack Bruce. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Great for many reasons!.......2007-05-12

Even if you're not a Ringo fan, you'll LOVE this DVD. There are so many great artists in this DVD you can't help but find something you like. My favorite was Jack Bruce (Cream), Peter Frampton, and Ringo jamming on "Sunshine of Your Love." Amazing! Lots of amazing venues also, including Montreaux. I rented it first, and then bought it because I loved it so much.

3 out of 5 stars Ringo in karaoke style surrounded by superstars.......2007-02-18

The drumming of Ringo especially in his Beatles days was a master of understatement and efficiency. Sadly little of that is on show here with either excessive use of drummers (the Greek Theater set with three drummers and two on all others) or an overcrowded supergroup (typified by the Montreux concert numbers).

Also his backing of a number of artistes whose overblown style dominates (Joe Walsh, Randy Bachmann and Todd Rundgren being the main exponents)leaves him very much in the background on a number of occasions. Coupled with a stage presence when lead singing which is closer to a sing along karaoke style, the only option is to enjoy the high spots when they do occur.

Dr John, Levon Helm and Felix Cavaliere shine in the earlier sets but the star performance is reserved for the 1997 sessions from Pine Knob, where Ringo with a mostly British band (Simon Kirke, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker) turns in a string of strong versions that really burn.

Overall a bit disappointing and one where after a few plays the "skip control is getting used I must admit.

5 out of 5 stars Ringo Hits a Grand Slam.......2006-08-14

This is one of the great compilations of classic rock music ever assembled. Ringo and his All Starr band play one after another. His musical guests on this DVD and the CD are all world class. Song selection is outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Souvenir.......2005-05-27

I enjoy this DVD as a souvenir of having seen this concert.

The backstage footage was inconsequential, I use the skip button a lot when I watch it.

The lineup wasn't stellar, but this was a really fun show

5 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable.......2005-04-06

Best live concert I have ever seen on dvd, excellent sound, excellent musicianship, good songs, nice feeling all the way through, Ringo's best performance ever and best all-starr team so far. I have watched it at least 50 times and will continue to watch it. Thanks Ringo!

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable DVD.......2005-03-04

This was actually my first Ringo DVD. I've only had it for 5 days and I've seen it 3 times. It's a very refreshing experience being a Beatles fan as well as an 80's music admirer. The performances were great however the crowd was somewhat too silent during the concert. I'll try the other DVD's as well. I strongly believe its a great buy!

3 out of 5 stars Get the CD.......2005-02-12

This DVD has great music, though not radically different from Ringo's previous tours. I do, however, have a problem with all the extra footage that was thrown in. I wouldn't mind as much if it were only once in a while, but the concert is interrupted after every song! I can't stand it! I also can't stand the poor camera work during the concert footage. You keep seeing the same angles too often...perhaps not enough cameras were used. My advice would be to skip this one and buy the CD release of the tour. It has the same music but with no interruptions, and no lousy camera work.

4 out of 5 stars What's up with the negative reviews?.......2005-01-21

Hey guys, yes, John Waite is no John Entwistle on the bass and Collin Haye is no Joe Walsh on lead guitar, but what this 2003 lineup did have over previous lineups is the fact that this is the best vocal lineup that Ringo's had yet. I love Simon Kirke (I'm a huge fan of Free and early Bad Co.) from a previous All-Starr lineup, but you have to admit, Sheila E. is a better drummer overall. The comraderie and genuine affection this latest lineup has for each other and for Ringo are awesome. Ringo doesn't look tired, by the way, as some review claimed below. He always looks like that when he plays the drums, be it in 1964 on TV, in the "Let It Be" movie or the promo videos and concert footage we've seen after The Beatles.
I'm a bassist, and Ringo's 2003 lineup on this DVD is far from shabby. Most bands would love to have this kind of "first night," which is the band's first show as seen on the DVD. I can't believe people nitpick about Collin's solos and stuff. Collin's a fine guitarist, and a great singer and writer, by the way.

5 out of 5 stars Ringo, Ringo!.......2007-05-07

Ya gotta love Ringo. A humble talented man who surrounds himself w/talented musicians and actually lets them play their own music, as well as his.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable concert. .......2006-01-13

I have many concerts on dvd and this is one i play often..there's so much variety in the music. There are some great performances from Roger Hodgson singing his old supertramp tunes and some good ringo numbers too.Sheila E is some drummer i was amazed watching her.Highly recomended.

3 out of 5 stars Great show, great musicians, but.............2005-06-16

I attended this concert in Montreal before the DVD was released. It was really great. It is a chance to see Greg Lake, Howard Jones, Sheila E., Ian Hunter, Roger H. from Supertramp and the others on the same stage. With all these great musicians, the live performance is incredible. Songs like "lucky man", "take a long way home", "logical song", "give a little bit", "no one is to blame".

I have two complains. First, there are no good extras on the DVD, just the concert and a 8-minute featurette. Next, the setlist is incomplete. At least, all hit-songs are there, but there are at least 2-4 songs missing, like the good "In the court of the Crimson King" by Greg Lake. The concert is not very long, less than 2 hours, so why taking out such great songs ?

Great buy if you like the musicians and Ringo. Check the setlist first to ensure you like the songs.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice -- But Incomplete -- DVD Of An Enjoyable Concert.......2004-06-22

I attended the concert in Concord, CA and had a blast. As on his other All-Starr Band tours, Ringo has surrounded himself with a collection of excellent musicians, each of whom gets a chance to shine on several of their own hits and back Ringo on many of his best-known Beatles and solo hits.

It's hard for me to judge the DVD with detachment -- how much of my enjoyment is due to having great memories of seeing those musicians perform the songs in person? -- but the sound quality is good and I think the DVD really captured the feel and energy of the concert.

However, as others have noted, there are some rather glaring omissions on this DVD, perhaps because the rights were tied up or the sound quality of those particular songs on that night was not ideal. One of the highlights of the Concord concert for me was Escovedo, Lake & Jones' version of ELP's Karn Evil #9 ("Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends..."), but King Crimson's The Court Of The Crimson King, Howard Jones' Everlasting Love, and two songs apiece by Sheila E. and Ian Hunter are also missing from this DVD.

I did just discover a CD which adds a few of the missing tracks though: Amazon lists the title as "Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band: Extended Versions", and it includes Karn Evil #9 (which I recall being better in Concord, perhaps because the drums were not as subdued), Everlasting Love (which is more memorable in this Chicago concert than I remember), the Ian Hunter ballad "I Still Love Rock 'N' Roll", and Sheila E.'s "A Love Bizarre" in addition to Ringo songs and Sheila E.'s Glamorous Life from the DVD.

The reviews for the CD are downright lousy, but it is inexpensive and the sound quality is pretty good. Perhaps the CD is only for All-Starr Band completists, but the Greg Lake and Howard Jones songs alone were worth the $7 CD price to me...

5 out of 5 stars Cut short!.......2004-05-25

I saw this concert in person and was a little disappointed that the DVD wasn't the entire concert! They have plenty of room on the disc. Shiela E. didn't even sing one of her two hits. I still recommend buying this disc and really recommend that you see any of the ringo all starr band concerts in person - it's a heck of a fun time.
