Progressive rock's pioneering power trio still packed a musical wallop when Emerson Lake & Palmer recorded this 25th anniversary concert in London's Royal Albert Hall in October 1992. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer had reunited to promote their studio album Black Moon, but the set list of this DVD, which differs from ELP's Albert Hall CD, is more of a "greatest hits" sampler, including such ELP standards as "Tarkus" and "Pictures at an Exhibition" (featuring an epic Palmer percussion solo), and Lake's still- beautiful ballads "From the Beginning" and "Lucky Man." Time had clearly taken its toll. Keyboard wizard Emerson rubs his wrists (which later required surgery) before forging ahead at full intensity (climaxing with his traditional "assault" on a Hammond organ), and Lake avoids high notes (most regrettably on "Pirates") to accommodate his mellowing voice. Still, the band's precision remains intact, and this DVD, despite a weak 5.1-channel sound mix, is a must-have for ELP's devoted fans. --Jeff Shannon

This documentary by Murray Lerner (From Mao to Mozart) was shot in 1970, but for many reasons was not shown to the public until 1995 in Great Britain. In an important way, it is the final chapter in an unofficial trilogy of concert films (along with Woodstock and Gimme Shelter) that together paint a picture of the highest and lowest points of Woodstock Nation politics: from mass goodwill to anarchy to outright stupidity. On the one hand, Message to Love is a rock & roll movie with several performances that are outright revelations (the Who's triumphant show, the Doors' "The End"), some that are awfully good (Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun"), and more than enough that are superfluous (Ten Days After, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Jethro Tull). On the other hand, Lerner's cameras are trained on the increasingly testy relationship between nomadic hippies who travel a long way to see the show but refuse to pay, and concert producers who resort to using guard dogs, cops, and aluminum walls to keep crashers at a distance. Just how bad does the mood become after several days of this? Check out the scene in which Joni Mitchell breaks down in tears after singing her ode to peace and love, "Woodstock," before this lot. In an era when we've become used to extraordinary security and high ticket prices at rock concerts, it's perhaps hard to grasp what the fuss was about at the Isle of Wight. But Lerner's amazing film helps a viewer get a sense of what was really at stake in that period before rock & roll was a corporate matter, and when kids naively thought it was theirs for the taking. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars This movie is heaven.......2007-05-12

I don't get the criticism of this movie. Firstly, it's damn cheap - so whatever you get is value. Secondly, I've never bothered to watch the actual movie all the way through - all I'm interested in is the music. I go straight to the titles section where you can just watch the performances uncut. That's what I wanted, and what I get is the most fantastic performances by The Who, Doors, and some bands which either aren't available anywhere else (such as Family and Ten Years After) or some bands for whom one or two performances are enough for me (such as Jimi Hendrix, Free, Taste and Leonard Cohen).

For me, that's the beauty of buying a Festival movie - fairly short clips of bands. If I want more, I buy a DVD of that band. Since buying this movie, I've been inspired to buy more by The Who and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, whereas it has put me off buying anything by Jimi, much as I like his music (on CD).

1 out of 5 stars When the music's over.......2007-02-14

A poorly made documentary focusing on the problems surrounding the festival's producers. Every music clip in this film has been edited down, sometimes to no more than a few seconds, so the creators of the movie could slip in a few more of the countless interviews with hippie's proclaiming the freedom of the music and the show promoters worrying over how they're going to pay the musicians and beat the bad publicity. There wasn't enough room to include a single entire performance of any song by any of the bands featured, but there's enough room to show interviews with burned out hippies in their entirety, interviews that consists mainly of babbling or long pauses while they try...to...remember...the...right...words...man.
It's obvious that the creators of the film wanted to focus on the deterioration of the hippie generation, but if they were trying to make a statement, they were about 30 years too late. The only statement this film makes is one of frustation. The audience of this film will feel much like the flower children featured in the movie, caught outside the festival, trying to get a glimpse of the music they love through a fence that the people in charge won't let them through.

4 out of 5 stars The music is great but..........2007-01-03

There's great vintage shots and sounds from Free, Tull, The Who, ELP and others but all the other documentary stuff, while interesting, I found distracting and boring.

3 out of 5 stars kinda disappointing.......2006-07-04

Depending on whether your interest lies in viewing this as a historical document or as a concert video you will probably be either less or more disappointed.I was expecting something more similar to Woodstock in which you were able to see the artists entire performance instead of edited versions of the songs.I could have done with a lot less of disgruntled hippies and more music. Some of the performances were great(The Who,Moody Blues,Miles Davis,ELP,Jetro Tull).Others were mediocre, most notably The Doors.Even Hendrix was not as good as in days past.So much for the hippie utopian dream that was portrayed in the Woodstock movie.

2 out of 5 stars only 5 mins of Alvin Lee/Ten Years After!!??.......2006-02-27

..whats all that about? I'm putting this crap on eBay first chance I get, I'm totally disgusted at the editing ,not because of how it was edited at the time of original release, but because they have not extended the songs to there original length . Ten Years After's 'I cant Keep from crying' with extended guitar solo from Alvin Lee, was nearly 20 minuites long and they put barely 5 minuites of it on here. This could have been made into an extended package, like most reissued/remastered concert footage has been . There is little enough footage of Ten Years After&Alvin Lee out there, yet Jethro Tull's full Isle of Wight 'full' 1 hour set has been released on DVD . Nice remastering, shame about the footage.

4 out of 5 stars Pomp and Glory.......2007-03-14

This a very good value double disc set (running time 250 mins).
OK a lot of the concert films are not up to modern standards, however as a historical document this will take some beating. It also demonstrates the fabulous musicianship of these 3 guys. The highlight for me is Keith Emerson's appearance on the Oscar Peterson show performing Honky Tonk Train Blues. But the (full length) promo film for Fanfare for the Common Man is also very good. There is quite an interesting documentary as well, and the 1974 California Jam session is on disc 2.

3 out of 5 stars nice, but still a disapointment.......2007-02-08

I thought this DVD would be interesting. It does include some things i have never seen and only a scant few of them are complete performances. Who wants to see a clip of a great video? They must have obviously had complete tapes of every one of these videos, so why they would give us this is beyond me.

Some of the things here i have elsewhere. Some of the things here are repeated. (Why a seperate video for the Third Impression when its clearly a part of the Cal Jam performance on the second disc??)

So if you are an casual ELP fan, this is not what you want. If you want to see some early perfomances, albeit edited, than this is a good place to find them. Either this or the Masters from the Vault DVD.

I have watched this DVD only once. There are only a few good (and complete) videos here. If you want to know about this band buy the Welcome Back DVD instead.

3 out of 5 stars Bittersweet.......2007-01-06

The clips that make up this DVD were done before much attention was payed to video recording. So, there are some less than perfect and sometimes just plain bad segments. For serious ELP fans, this is a must but unfortunately even the performances are a bit weak except for Greg Lake's vocals, which are for the most part, amazingly strong. It also leads me to believe that if Lake had more input into the direction of the band, they would have been even better. The classical adaptations that ELP were known for, were quite unique but often became tiresome with Emerson's self indulgent, lengthy solos. The 2nd disc which includes a history of the band is quite informative. Unfortunately the guys come off as slightly bitter about how they were perceived and a bit pompous about their talents. Keith Emerson at one point states, "maybe we were just too good". I really am a fan of ELP but alot of their music has not aged well, with a few exceptions, it is mostly with nostalgia that I delve back into those recordings. This DVD solidifies the fact that they were a group of guys with an interesting idea but might have taken themselves a bit too seriously. Still, gotta love em. And the full version of Pirates is probably worth the price alone.

3 out of 5 stars I'm kinda disappointed about this DVD.......2007-04-01

Somebody dropped the ball here. Yes, although ELP in 1997 was way beyond their prime and they didn't have the energy (or even the pride) they use to have many years ago back in their heyday, but it still doesn't justify why they should sell this DVD with a reduced picture and sound quality. But, I was willing to accept this DVD after I saw it on High Definition cable TV.

Yes that's right! This show was filmed with High Definition equipment and was in Widescreen on cable TV. But this DVD is not presented in the High Definition that it should be. And this DVD is Full Screen, not Widescreen. The sides were cut off. Even in the rolling credits, it tells you (in horrid blurry hardly decipherable print) that this concert was filmed in High Definition.

I saw them live back in 1992 in Sacramento and that particular world tour has been captured on film in England and is available as the DVD of "Live at The Royal Albert Hall." At least, at that show, they still seemed to care about working together and giving their audience their best effort. And strangely enough, this concert looks better on DVD than "Live at Montreaux." It's not High Definition, but just looks and sounds better. They looked a little healthier too at the Royal Albert Hall.

The only thing I have to say "positive" about their "Live at Montreaux" DVD, is that some of their instrumental work is still pretty good. The show starts off very typical of any ELP show over the many years they've performed together. It's no surprise that an aging comeback band like ELP will start off their show with Karn Evil 9 ("Welcome Back My Friends...."), and about the first 20 minutes of this show could easily bore you and make you want to shut it off, but as you get deeper into the show, it does get a little better. They get more instrumental, and that is usually what we ELP fans enjoyed the most about ELP live. It's not Greg Lake's fault, but it is unfortunate that the first thing that diminishes in appeal about any aging rock band, is that the vocalist suffers the most obvious of the inability to continue to perform. Keith and Carl can still entertain their audience with their instrumental solo performance, but you can tell that it's very exhaustive for them. On this DVD, Keith's "Creole Dance" was quite good. And the encore performance of "Fanfare For the Common Man" was an excellent display of Keith and Carl giving their best. I didn't forget about Greg, It's just that nothing really stands out for him on this show. "From the Beginning" is always good, so is "Lucky Man", but I wish he would have done "Still...You Turn Me On", "C'est La Vie", "The Old Castle", and maybe even "Epitaph". All his input here was very short term and nothing outstanding. He didn't even bother to smile for his audience.

If they ever decide to re-release this DVD in the true High Definition Widescreen that it should have been, then maybe I'll buy it. But, this DVD is a disaster at all levels. I'll have to pass.

(ATTENTION: PROG FANS: Check out the new DVD of "Yes: Live at Montreaux." It is the best Yes live DVD available to this day.)

5 out of 5 stars Still out of this world great.......2007-02-08

ELP, what an awesome trio,I've followed their music since 1970's and I was astonished at how well these guys can still perform. Really, it's absolutely unbelievable. When they were in their 20's they had the energy and now. I'm a pianist, love jazz, classical, hard rock, acid rock and I guarantee, there's not a group alive that can duplicate what this most talented group can do. And only a trio. Simply amazing. If you've read the complete idiot at the top of this board, I'm so, so sorry that they allowed uneducated idiots to write that crap, that idiot probably thinks that Ludwig Van Bethoven was a tiny figure in music also. ELP, where did they get their talent? I saw them live in Tucson, Az in 1975, 4th row center debuting Brain Salad Surgery and I'll still never, ever forget that show. Thank god for bringing this group together.

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST HAVE THIS DVD !!!!! I have TWO !!!!!!.......2006-07-01

I can't understand the bad reviews that a couple of people have left for this great dvd. I have followed this band 'from the beginning', saw them live in the 70's and have viewed all of their video material. This is simply the best. There are a few minor flaws as with any live performance but they don't hurt a thing. Listen to the original Tarkus on cd, then listen and watch Tarkus on this and you will see what I mean. Emerson is the greatest keyboardist of all times, Palmer is the greatest percussionist of all times and Lake is in no way short on talent. Their skills have not eroded in any way. If anything they are better. Lakes voice is a little deeper but still has the unique sound that makes this band complete. We can only hope that they will perform together again. If not we have this dvd of which I own two of. I sometimes have to loan one out to friends and can't stand to be without one. Sometimes the camera work is off, they need to focus more on Keith when he's the highlite. The sound is fine, I had to work with my home system to find the best sound---don't you always. Another good comparison, listen to Fanfare, Rondo, etc. on cd and then listen and watch the encore medly which totally kicks arse to the original versions.

5 out of 5 stars live at montreux , shows thier capabilities.......2005-05-31

This is an excellent dvd. This showcases ELP' great personal talents, and shows how they won over a sceptical canadian crowd who was attending a jazz festival, and did'nt know what to expect. By the end of the show, they were standing and cheering for more, even though I got the impression that half the crowd probably knew "lucky man" only, when ELP took the stage.

5 out of 5 stars It's not that bad! In fact, for 15.00, its great!.......2005-05-20

Keith, shave your upper arms.
Carl, leave your shirt on.
Greg, stay away from food service table.
If your a casual fan looking for something to watch just to "remember when", this is not a good DVD to buy. If your a meticulous, detail oriented fan(ie: comic book guy on the Simpsons), same thing, not the DVD for you. I know there has to be some quality video w/sound out there of ELP. Maybe whoever owns it just doesnt want to spend the money to market it properly. True, ELP fans have continually been ripped off by sub-par video & anthology after anthology, I can see why some fans are very critical of this set. All that being said, a bad ELP is still better than most any other prog-rock bands. I never got the chance to see them live so with all their "appearance" problems, they still rock to me! As a previous reviewer said, they do look like they could care less about each other, but again, the music simply outshines even their own bad attitudes. So, is it worth 15.00? You bet it is! Lets face it, what else have we got?....

MASTERS FROM THE VAULT (EMERSON,LAKE & PALMER)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ----Spectacular----.......2007-05-31

This product should be seen by all people that really love both music as true art and great musicians. The grade of virtuosity displayed by these three musicians here is "Absolute Gold Standard". I have always loved the first album called simply "Emerson, Lake and Palmer" and mainly two songs one of them is "The Barbarian" and the other one is "Take a pebble". The performance of "The barbarian" in this DVD is superb, very energetic, curiously this song is the first one in the first album and is the mathematical demonstration of the total virtuosity of this group as if they wanted to show since the first time that they weren't here to fool people, as if they wanted to address the following message to the world, "we are serious musicians and we love to play musical instruments". The other performances here are of the same level of quality and the drum solo played by Carl Palmer here is one of the most different ones I have ever seen and listened in my life, his ability and rhythm control capacity are only equalled by Neil Peart from Rush. One thing that jumps to ones eyes is how easy they play such a complex pieces of music and how they were happy those days in playing together. Simply Buy this DVD, play it and enjoy it, you are going to watch real musician's performances and listening to great music.

3 out of 5 stars Has anyone compared this to Live Broadcasts DVD?.......2006-07-09

As for this "Masters from the Vaults" DVD, I have nothing to add to Mr. M. A Maupin's excellent review posted in 2004.

But, in 2006, Classic Rock Legends started to release a new series titled "Live Broadcasts: Collector's Rarities".
Among them there's an ELP DVD, which has the very same set list as this one.
I guess they are the same concert but "Live Broadcasts" has DTS audio track.

If anyone can clarify if they are the same concert, and how different DTS sounds, I'd appreciate. I'm waiting for customer review on that one.

And for those who hasn't got "Masters from the Vaults" yet, "Live Broadcasts" my be a better choise.

2 out of 5 stars Great Concert, Terrible Print.......2006-02-22

Take a look at the product artwork on the cover - they've even packaged this in a color that will detract attention from the RED wash that is evident in the still pics & that permeates this footage with virtually all other colors missing.
I think this might've even been better in B&W. They've remastered the the sound, but done nothing with the depessing dark RED picture. Over-priced too.

1 out of 5 stars ELP lovers... wait & BEWARE!.......2005-09-24

ELP is MY group... yet, the production itself just makes me cringe. As a matter of fact, I sold it after watching it. Here's the deal- there is a whole lot of footage that was done back in the 'acid-days', when the film makers were tripping, and figured everyone watching was gonna be tripping, too. It's NOT the subjects that is that's the problem (it's the messenger). The producers of the DVD don't even have it together enough to spell-check the cover-art for the DVD case... they keep referencing 'Mike'... what they mean is 'mic', as in microphone. (dufus) Well... in this case, it IS a pretty good clue as to what to expect.

Save your money. Instead, DO buy ELP "Beyond the Beginning". It has many of the same cuts, concerts, etc., but not nearly as many of the ones that would make you cringe as an ELP fan. Plus, 'BTB' has stuff like The California Jam, complete with the 'flying piano' footage. That particular concert is special for me because exactly one week to the day before, I saw ELP in Memphis, where I sat '4th row center'. Actually, the Memphis show was better than the C-Jam... (I have it on cassette).

Back to this DVD.... I am a modular synth player, and was quite disappointed that because of the stupid 'acid-crazed' hokey production... you can't really even see any good close-ups of the equipment. I wonder why the credits don't give full names... almost as if they were too embarrassed.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll Your Eyes.......2005-09-07

Rock and Roll Your Eyes was the title of the ONLY ELP concert video (way back when you went to see these concerts in the movie theater before there were VCR's) That film consisted of what is now the DVD Pictures at An Exhibition and this group of "missing" songs. For years I wondered whatever happened to the rest of the film I saw in my youth. Authorized or no, I welcome it's return.

3 out of 5 stars Pictures at an Exhibition DVD review.......2005-07-22

I am a rabid ELP fan having personally known the band and followed them since their debut. They are three of the most talented individuals whom have ever lived. I had the pleasure of seeing them twelve times; the last two courtesy of Greg Lake with backstage passes. Cameramen have never had the foresight to realize what a master keyboardist Keith Emerson is and was on keyboards. Footage actually showing his hands at work is very rare. He was fast as lightning and his performance is stellar during this performance. This DVD was unique in actually showing his hands at work. Blues Variation was rarely performed live for time limitations and is performed on this footage. In my opinion, this shows Keith's prowess at his best. The special effects are annoying up until this point and become unbearable when Keith starts his blistering solo. I will never watch this DVD again. I got so disgusted that I wanted to throw it out with the trash. Whoever had the brilliant idea to ruin this piece of history should meet a slow painful demise. To do such a thing is tantamount to drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa. If a version of this performance exists without the garbage, it would be a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Unauthorized Nostalgia..........2005-06-21

I remember this "movie" from college, when I was an ELP freak. That it was ELP more than made up for any shortcomings in production value. Now, however... well, times and tastes change and this is just embarrassing! My wife has a collection of Parader magazine (a rock 'n' roll fan mag) from the 70's. One of them features an inteview with Greg Lake in which he lambasts this film. According to him it was made without their knowledge or consent. He thought the sound was horrible, their performances substandard and the visual effects unacceptable. But hey, after all that -- it's still ELP.

3 out of 5 stars its historically interesting, despite the annoying effects........2005-03-19

why? why? why? why cant a company do the right thing. why cant these 3 guys get in a room & take control of thier recorded legacy-then put out product deserving of having their names on it. theres certain passages in the video where these cheesy 60's video effects are stuck in. it's like some practical joke. you can still hear the music & see them, but its as if their in negative form. besides that, this disc is an awsome time piece, a window for those of us who never saw them live. keith rubbing the ribbon controller on his arse is a little disturbing though. i was really impressed w/greg's acoustic playing. when u consider the difficulty(albeit overly dramatic way) with which that passage is, he plays it flawlessly-incredible. so, if your a fan, you'll want to see this, however-as stated before-be warned-theres some really stupid effects that some tv producer thought would be cool at the time(i'm sure). its doubtful a pure copy of the video exists w/out the "effects", which is sad. so, is it worth it?-sure it is. if for no other reason than to see how they pulled off such a complicated piece of music with such primitive instrumentation...still amazing to this day!

4 out of 5 stars The Midnight Movies.......2005-02-25

Way back in the pre-MTV 70's, most cities and towns had at least one theatre that ran "Midnight Movies," usually on Friday and Saturday nights. These ran the gamut from the bad (The Song Remains the Same) to the good (Rocky Horror, The Wall) to the weird (Rust Never Sleeps.) It really didn't matter too much since the entire audience was stoned out of they're gourds and half of them were groping each other. Still it was the coolest thing in the world back then to see good bands on any sized screen. How times have changed indeed. Sometimes they'd show oldies like the Beatles films or Woodstock, and sometimes there would be two movies on the bill, at least one of them a bit shorter. That's where this DVD comes in, since it's basically the 70's midnight movie "Rock and Roll Your Eyes" except I think the original had "The Nutrocker" as an encore. This was a less-than-one-hour thing that would play before something like Welcome to my Nightmare or Monterrey Pop. Which means me and my friends/dates probably arrived halfway through it most of the time, since we were busy getting stoned out of our gourds in the parking lot like everybody else.

So having this actual document of that long-gone era is incredibly cool to those of a certain generation. The fact that it's a great document from the Prog era makes it extra special to me. So I give it 4 stars. And I'm going to be a lot more lenient than many people would be, for the above-mentioned reasons.

So 1 star off for all of this: The sound and picture are typical of their day, and were never intended to be released in the digital age. The performance itself is rough in spots, although the band generally aquits itself well enough. 70's prog indulgences can be cool (such as the entire idea of making a rock remake of a classical standard) but they can be uncool just as well (Keith Emerson playing some theramin type thing with his butt, and ruining a stirring finale by tossing his electric clavinet around like a wrestling partner.) And while Emerson's early Moog work is historic (even Bob Moog himself told him it couldn't be used on stage) the endless knob-twiddling is distracting. The psychedelic film effects smeared over half the movie (which gave the film it's original name) are dated and ruin the visual enjoyment of the best part, when ELP are in the middle of some classic jamming. Greg Lake is off-key at several key moments (awesome acoustic guitar on "The Sage" though.)

Despite all of that, I absolutely treasure this rare treat from the classic Prog days, a great band captured live and for the most part playing outstanding music. The CD itself would only get 3 stars from me, but this DVD is essential for old (and new) Progheads, and old Midnight Movies veterans too.

4 out of 5 stars if only they had removed the cartoons..........2004-08-17

It should have been a perfect historic performance of an early ELP, but the marvel cartoons effects are really out of place... no more words about it. The performance and image are very good and naive: Emerson, in his brand new suit, fighting with the oscillators of his new MOOG synthesizer; the absolutely breathtaking acoustic solo by Lake; and Palmer trying to get into the rhythm on a part of The Great Gates of Kiev. Very nice film, that's why I recommend it.
ELP's segment on the film about ISLE OF WIGHT and MASTER FROM THE VAULTS(from french program Superstars in Concert) are a couple of additional DVDs to be a good companion to this one.

3 out of 5 stars good, but not great.......2007-02-09

This DVD is a bit of a disappointment. Although the show was obviously awesome, i hardly see it on this disc.

It seems the music, although performed well, seems stale. Maybe its just this performance, or bad production but it seems SAFE! Back in the old days they would play with total abandon and sometimes fall out of synch. But this show seems TAME and STRUCTURED and more interesed in playing the stuff with precision rather than heart. They never let things hang in space or go into a jam. Its like listening to a lions roar filtered through a bad speaker.

However, some later performances from 97 and 98 are much better. But this seems like they were only back to prove they were still alive and even the show itself seems rushed and not very intimate.

They used to be a young and hungry band, but it seems age has caught up with them and at the time this was recorded, back in 1992, they should have hung it up and let the past stay in the past instead of trying to recapture a fire that went out a long time ago.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless ELP.......2007-01-03

This contempory performance form ELP is a must have for hard core fans. Its energy is different from the younger, wilder days but nonetheless it still shines through Keith's, Greg's and Karl's musicianship. The roots of ELP are still intact, as creative and musicaly inteligent as before.

This is an excellent DVD, good sound, really enjoyed it. Great to watch

3 out of 5 stars Close But No Cigar.......2004-04-04

Yes and ELP were 2 of my favorite groups of the early 70s. Having seen ELP twice in '74 and '77 (Yes, I've seen 4 times), I have to say this is somewhat of a lackluster performance. The dynamics of their earlier performances just isn't there. Not that there aren't any good moments. Rondo is a real knockout with Keith revisiting the good old days of abusing his Hammond organ.
Greg's voice seems somewhat strained but still retaining it's richness. But what do you expect, the guy's nearing 50. Even the ever durable Paul McCartney is starting get a little ragged.
As a drummer myself, Carl was of course one my favorite drummers of the 70s and still is. However, his solo during Pictures is a bit of a disappointment. He just doesn't whizz around the drumset like he used to. He spends more time playing cymbals and gongs than he does playing the drums.
All and all it's still fun seeing these guys performing again and this dvd is the best thing to get from them. But if you want to see them in their prime, check out the Montreal '77 concert dvd available on their website. Picture and sound has a bit to be desired, but the energy of their performance really comes out. Even Carl has a 10 min solo on that beautiful custom steel drumset he used to have (He ended up selling it to Ringo). And OH if they could only just restore the California Jam footage! You get the picture!

4 out of 5 stars Definitely, The Show that Never Ends..........2004-04-03

Make sure you listen to the Dolby 5.1 soundtrack and the sound will be awesome.

All I can think is that the other reviewers who didn't like the sound must have had a 2.0 Stereo Soundtrack.

I saw ELP live several times before, this sounded as good as sitting in the front row... if not better...

I'd give it five stars, but I just wanted it to be much longer and have more selections, but worth the price of admission in my book...

Description

This DVD features two complete programs! "Works: Orchestral Tour" was shot on August 26, 1977 at Montreal's famed Olympic Stadium. The concert film documents the legendary Works Tour where, in 1977, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer became the first rock band to assemble and tour with a full 65 piece symphony orchestra. "The Manticore Special" was filmed while the band was writing, recording and touring the material that eventually became the Brain Salad Surgery album. This film captures the legendary band as they were in 1973, during what was unquestionably one of the most artistically fertile phases of their entire career.

3 out of 5 stars Only for the die-hard fan of ELP.......2006-07-25

There's not enough "s'es" in "sucks" to describe how bad the picture and sound quality is of this DVD.

But, if you were fortunate enough to catch ELP during their 1977 Works Tour, than this DVD will give you back some of that fond memory you had when you saw them back then.

I saw them in Detroit, so seeing this show live again is a treat. But, the quality of this DVD is truly horrible.

However, if it is simply not possible for these two ducumentaries to be improved, then I guess we should be thankful that they actually released this at all.

My favorite ELP DVD is still my very first purchase. The documentary of their "Black Moon" tour called "Welcome Back".

Their double DVD called "Beyond the Beginning" is pretty good too.

4 out of 5 stars Technically, blah...BUT it's Prime ELP!.......2003-12-23

Yeah, I agree. Technically, this DVD bites! The video is particularly bad. BUT this is probably the only chance to see ELP at the height of their powers with the full orchestra (unless other, unknown footage exists). And, the sound isn't THAT bad! Musically, this is a landmark DVD (the first rock band to tour with a full orchestra). "Pirates" alone is worth the price of the DVD. The orchestra is perfectly integrated into the performance (unlike many other such excursions from the period, where a rock band would play for a while and then the orchestra would play their part).

The second part of the show (the "Manticore" special) is a 1973 documentary on the band during the making of "Brain Salad Surgery" and the tour that followed. It's interesting to see life on the road with the band (lots of alcohol, cigs, and funny-looking cigarettes!). There is also good (but incomplete) performance footage of several ELP classics (the only complete song is "Hoedown" at the end of the program). Again, the technical quality is very ragged, but from a historical perspective it's quite fascinating!

ELP have said that the Montreal concert with the orchestra was one of their best performances. Get the DVD and find out why!

2 out of 5 stars Works doesn't Work.......2003-11-12

Simply put- Garbage. The audio quality is poor, Very muddy, no highs. The sound reminds me of someone sneaking in a hand held recorder and bootlegging the show! I have to put up the treble on my receiver three quarters and back down the bass half to get something listenable. The video is fair to close to good.Grainy, at times out of focus. The only good point is EL&P performance with the orchestra. For a DVD, it has to be one of the worst releases by a professional company.Very surprised EL&P let this get released.Do not buy .Hopefully, this disaster will be discontinued and a re release with the sound remixed correctly, the video cleaned up better.

EMERSON,LAKE & PALMER:THE LIVE BROADCASTS (EMERSON,LAKE & PALMER)

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A mediocre re-issue from a different source: Fellow ELP fans - Save your money!!!.......2006-09-28

If you are like me, and you have every possible DVD release of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, than this DVD will end up being a duplicate of what you already have.

If you already have "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Masters From the Vaults" (INT1524 NTSC) from Intense Media Ltd. Then this new DVD of "The Live Broadcasts" is the same thing. The exact same film and footage.

However, there is a difference. "Masters From the Vaults" is in the original 1:33 Full Screen. This newer release was made to be 1:85 Wide Screen. Which means, they had to cut off the top and the bottom of the picture so that it would appear to be Widescreen. For example: The footage where you would see Keith Emerson playing piano. On the "Masters From the Vaults" version, you see it all. But on this simulated Widescreen version, the top of Keith's head is cut off, and worse yet, you won't see his hands or the keys of the piano. They've been cut off to create this "widescreen" appearance. The same thing happens with Greg Lake and his guitar. So, with an old film like this made to appear to be closer (everything a little larger), the graininess of the film becomes more apparent. In other words, the picture just isn't as good.

I've watched them both, side by side. This "Live Broadcasts" DVD was made with an effort to give you something less than what it should be.

The sound quality is still the same 2 Channel Stereo, so no improvements there either.

Overall, "Masters From the Vaults" is a better buy. If you haven't bought either yet, definately buy "Masters From the Vaults" instead of this one. Rent this one, like I did, if you wanna see what I mean.

I still believe that ELP is the greatest band on earth!! I hope they find more unreleased film footage. But, we gotta be careful and watch out for these re-released duplicates that come out from various sources that all hope to profit from the same thing already available.

5 out of 5 stars Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - As good as it gets!.......2006-08-17

This is ELP how can you not give it 5 stars?!!!
Of course the production is not the best but that's not the point of this legendary material being offered.

This is the same disc as ELP "Masters from the Vaults." It looks to be a somewhat better copy but is about the best you can expect from a TV broadcast of the 70's.

Of course this is ELP and any footage is welcome. The boys are in top form performing their early music from their first album. Progressive rock masters, much maligned for no good reason, these are some of the best musicians in the world. So the talentless Sex Pistols put them down? Bollocks!

Sure they fell apart after Works, but in their prime they were the masters of Progressive rock.
Only Yes and Genesis rank up there with these guys.

The disc is almost an hour long and includes live performances of:

The Barbarian, Rondo/Bach Improvisations, Drum Solo, Nut Rocker, Take a Pebble, Knife Edge.

The performances are good with a minimal of effects that makes the Pictures DVD annoying.
Once again I ask when will they make the full Pictures at an Exhibition DVD available with the missing 45 minutes of footage as it was originally cut?

I actually have a copy of the full show but I would still like to see the whole thing remastered WITHOUT the annoying special effects. Check the web for "BobbyShred" to find it.
There is also a Japanese version of the Tarkus tour, filled with annoying effects that is worth seeing. Maybe they can dig that up also.

I don't know about you guys but I still listen to ELP all the time, their music is timeless to me, truly classic rock.

This DVD is definatly worth having. I say buy it so it gives them the inclination to release more.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than "Pictures at an Exhibition".......2006-08-16

Not perfect but a resonably good early concert by ELP. There are significantly less headache-inspiring visuals that "Pictures" and many actually fit the music. The performances are very early and pretty terrific, with a strange early version of "Tiger in a Spotlight" and TWO encores of "Nutcracker". The band sems to be having much fun on stage and the act is much looser that later classic ELP.

I quite enjoyed it.

Description

Continuing our release of DVDs from Oscar-winning director Murray Lerner's filming of the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival, we have Emerson Lake & Palmer's The Birth Of A Band. It was ELP's first proper live concert, their only previous gig having been a warm up in Plymouth the previous night. Playing in front of 600,000 people, at what remains the biggest festival in rock history, they became overnight stars with the press raving about their virtuosity and daring. They would go on from here to become multi-million selling artists, but this unique film is there right at the beginning.

1 out of 5 stars A Bitter Disappointment.......2006-12-20

I may not add anything new to the reviews already posted, but the visual editing was clearly done by someone who has a contempt for the magic that is ELP, or at the very least, simply does not value ELP like the people who would buy this DVD. There are endless cuts of seemingly anything other than the finest musicians of the era. I wanted to see Greg Lake sing "Take a Pebble," I wanted to see his guitarwork on "Pictures at an Exhibition," and I wanted to see how Emerson made some of the sounds I have been listening to for decades. I am glad that one of Carl Palmer's solos was actually shown, as opposed to listening to the music while seeing visuals of a demolition derby or some stalker-boy chasing nude bathers (I actually felt embarrassed for the people the cinematographer was hounding). Whomever edited this was completely self-indulgent, and missed the point completely.

That said, the interviews were great, and the little you could see of the band only makes me more determined to find some ELP DVDs that highlight the musicians, and not some self-indulgent vision of an artfilm. Buy this used; it's worth about $3. At that price, it's watchable.

Greg, Keith, Carl - we love you. This is no reflection on you whatsoever. In fact, it is because you mean so much to us that this DVD offends us.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Live Document.......2006-07-10

I just got this set yesterday and watched the DVD last night. The cd/dvd dual disc has both the dvd on one side and just the music on the other. A friend of mine won both the dvd and the dual disc from a local radio station. He decided to keep the dual disc and give me the dvd!

I haven't heard the music by itself yet but I can speak for the DVD portion. It was amazing. It was the year after Woodstock and many amazing bands were there. It's still the largest concert in history. And the line-up was amazing! Back then they didn't have video so they used film to capture the moment. What you hear on the cd is just the 4 songs and none of the interviews and footage from the festival. This is the first thing my friend heard. He's actually the guy who got me into ELP back in the early 90's. We saw them live at Sunken Garden in San Antonio, TX in 1993. The show remains the best live show I've ever seen and I've seen many many many live shows.

This is the first time the world became aware of ELP. It was THIS 4 songs that made the impression. Two songs are long, one about 24 minutes, the other about 11 minutes. Then there are two shorter songs: one about 4 1/2 minutes and the other about 2 1/2 minutes. You get Pictures At An Exhibition before it ever makes it it's first cd two years later. They refine that songs quite a bit for "Pictures At An Exhibition" (Live album) in 1972. They add an amazing classical solo in the middle by Greg Lake. But this version is just as amazing and the really neat part is witnessing a song in progress.

There are some complaints about the DVD not being just concert footage alone. People can be very negative regarding this but I saw an ELP that I'd never seen before! I saw plenty of live footage of them on stage. I saw what they looked like back then in 1970 more than anything. And how they played. There was no shortage of enjoyment in that area. Sure, this could've been a 90 minute or 2 hour show but this was Isle of Wight and no one got that much time on stage. You know the festival length don't you? About 40 to 60 minutes per band except for the headliner. No one knew who ELP was at this show but they knew by the end of their set! And then the world knew.

Me? I think this is very to the point in 67 minutes on DVD and 41:46 for the cd. Woodstock is a great DVD but it's very long. This seems to be a first effort edition. Even Woodstock was released in a more elongated edition later on. But this is just ELP's set. So it's no different than Jimi Hendrix's set from Woodstock. Just that band and nothing else.

Maybe people need to stop expecting so much out of things. I find that if I expect too much I don't enjoy what is there. When I go in like a blank page with no expectations, I'm often pleasantly surprised. Yes, I'd love to see/hear any complete concerts by this band but I think The Birth of A Band - Isle of Wight Festival Saturday, August 29, 1970 was a great document of who the band was back then AND who the fans were going to their shows. A nice treat. I really enjoyed it.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2006-05-17

I can't say enough bad things about this video. I picked it up in the store and couldn't wait to see it. They keep showing the same clips over and over and over, in slow motion that are not at all what the band is playing. As mentioned in the other review, we watch ridiculous boat races to the music. The only thing that keeps me from getting rid of this DVD is the final performance of Rondo,in sinc and in real time which is is where they get all the slow-motion clips they use in the rest of the DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Bummer.......2006-05-08

Theres around 5% of the video footage from the concert used for this DVD. I don't know if they did this because they didn't have the rest or theres a legal matter? You might as well buy the CD because it has almost the same amount of video on it.

2 out of 5 stars Why do they do this?.......2006-05-06

The first review by Mark is accurate. The only thing that saves this is the Carl Palmer drum solo.I thought this was going to be like Jethro Tull's Nothing is Easy DVD from the Isle of Wight (which is excellent). It's not. When they showed power boats racing to ELP's music I had to laugh. This is so insane it's funny.Very disappointing overall. If they did show you the actual footage from the whole concert this would be AWESOME.I'm sorry to say it isn't.All you get is about 10 or 15 minutes of actual footage.Whoever made this should be ashamed of themselves.I gave it 2 stars because I love Emerson ,Lake and Palmer.Go for'Master's from the Vault's 'instead.
