One of the most exciting live bands to emerge from Britain's new wave, the Jam are deservedly immortalized on this two-disc set. A visual record of the neo-mod group's prime years, The Complete Jam begins with 1977-1979 concert appearances on U.K. television and ends with a muscular, 1982 set originally broadcast on Granada's The Tube. The Jam's topnotch musicianship, naked pop influences, and fierce cultural criticism (offset by a disarming whimsicality) are all here: "In the City," "All Around the World," "Beat Surrender," as well as vital covers (Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up"). Rounding out the ragged but compelling live footage are creaky promotional films and music videos, all fun to see. The jewel here, though, is a 1980 concert at Newcastle City Hall, showcasing the Jam's incendiary, Who-like brilliance marrying power, passion, and sonic exploration. All the historical mystique of this band is here. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great review of the Jam.......2005-09-20

Fantastic DVD. Saw footage I never had the opportunity to see before. Some old music videos and live performances. If you love the Jam, then you should not be without this DVD as part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars DaveTheMod Agrees This Discs A Crackin' Good One !.......2005-01-05

First off: BUY this DVD ! Sell off those iffy CD's you own from all those iffy bands, and put the cash towards this terrific "JAM" DVD. I have been a Jam fan from way back in '79 but never saw a video or anything from them for years no matter how hard I looked - now here's more video and live stuff than I could possibly have hoped for. It has stayed in my player for months now. I watch it everyday and never tire of it. If you are a new fan, I envy you. I had to rely on black&white stills and my imagination for years. While you my friend have a treasure trove here, bursting with colour, energy & great songs.

4 out of 5 stars Only two problems.......2004-12-06

There are only two things that detract from this terrific DVD: the exclusion (as another reviewer pointed out) of a performance of "Beat Surrender" (possibly from Top of the Pops or The Tube) that many of us remember seeing on MTV in the '80s, and the fact that the sound on many of the promo clips seems to be the original sound track off the old video tape, when the producers surely could have taken the time to replace the poor sound quality with remastered stereo tracks ("Absolute Beginners" and "Going Underground" are two that sound poor and monaural). But these clips are so undeniably cool that you won't regret buying this collection for a moment.

5 out of 5 stars Best band you've never heard........2004-06-14

My first exposure to the Jam was on ABCs "Friday", a Saturday Night Live clone, in 1979 or '80. They performed "Start" and "Going Underground", I believe. The next day I bought every Jam LP that Sound Warehouse had.
Unfortunately, that was the only time I saw them perform until I bought this DVD. The Jam were definitely a band that was meant to be heard live. As much as I still like their albums "Setting Sons", Sound Affects", "In the City" and the rest, their live performances of the songs on these albums blows the studio versions away. The Newcastle City Hall gig, by itself, is worth the cost of this DVD.
Highlights:
Disc 1 Live TV:
Ultra-raw "In the City" on the So it Goes segment.
"In the Street Today", 2nd song from Old Grey Whistle Test
Disc 1 singles:
"In the City"
"Strange Town"
"Butterfly Collector"
Disc 2 Live TV:
Entire Newcastle gig, especially
"Going Underground"
"To be Someone"
"A-Bomb in Wardour Street"
"Tales From the Riverbank" 2nd song on Mandagsborsen
(Sweedish TV) and Weller's interview with clueless host.
"In the Crowd" and "The Modern World" from the Tube
segment.

Long live the Mods

5 out of 5 stars Setting Sons.......2004-06-04

Simply the greatest British band since The Beatles. I can assure my American cousins that being part of The Jam era in the UK was a privilege. This DVD goes someway to capturing what The Jam were and still are about: Honesty, passion, inspiration and above all else great music. The Jam were a spiritual band that challenged their audience, changed attitudes and changed lives. A light went out in 1982 when we lost them it still saddens me today but we still have the music and this great DVD to remember them by.

5 out of 5 stars CALIFORNIA JAM 1974 IS ONE OF DEEP PURPLE'S FINEST HOURS AND ONE OF ROCK N' ROLL'S GREATEST MOMENTS........2007-06-03

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic 2 CD + DVD set entitled "DEEP PURPLE - COMPLETE CALIFORNIA JAM" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's favorite sons, D-E-E-P P-U-R-P-L-E! I have the most recent version of this show released in 2005 on one DVD by Eagle Vision. The picture and sound quality is not bad but not the best either. However, the performance makes up for it. I also own this performance on CD entitled "DEEP PURPLE LIVE AT THE CALIFORNIA JAM" released in 1996 on the Mausoleum Classix Records label which is manufactured and distributed by BMG Music in affiliation with King Biscuit Entertainment Group. A NEW UPDATE: This particular 2 CD + DVD "COMPLETE CALIFORNIA JAM" was released in 2005 by Vap Inc. and is by far, the best picture and sound quality available thus far. If you want the true crisp video quality and the best sound available from the original master tapes as it was shown and recorded by ABC on 6 April 1974, this collection is for you.

DEEP PURPLE'S legendary performance at the California Jam took place at Ontario Motor Speedway, Los Angeles, California Saturday, 6 April 1974. The Festival netted well over one and a half million dollars, which made it at the time the largest single-day paid attendance in U.S. Rock concert history. According to the attached linear notes, the Rock Festival was promoted by the ABC-TV network, who were looking for a primetime vehicle such as King Biscuit Flower Hour that would capitalize on the popularity of stadium-sized Rock events. It was also the first and ONLY time that ABC-TV had opted to promote such an event. The way DEEP PURPLE ended their concert performance on that dark April night very nearly gave ABC a heart attack and anxiety attack at the same time which was all that ABC could handle . The complete California Jam performance is on one CD and on one DVD of this collection. The other CD that is included in this collection is a DEEP PURPLE live concert recorded on Tuesday, 9 April 1974 at the San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, California U.S.A.

DEEP PURPLE will forever go down in history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most all-time greatest anthems ever. DEEP PURPLE will also be remembered as being THE LOUDEST BAND IN THE WORLD according to the 1974-1975 Guiness Book Of World Records. DEEP PURPLE will also be remembered for changing band personnel, labeling them Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4 respectively. In my opinion, the Mk2 line-up comprising of frontman and lead vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice, bassist Roger Glover, lead and rhythm guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and keyboardist Jon Lord is the best of all the Mk line-ups ever. If I had to choose a second best Mk line-up, it would be the Mk3 line-up comprising of lead and rhythm guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, frontman and lead vocalist David Coverdale, bassist Glenn Hughes, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice. Coincidently, it would be the Mk3 line-up and not the Mk2 line-up that would perform at the California Jam concert festival I'm about to review for you today. This would be one of the many concert performances that would give the Mk3 line-up its identity in the DEEP PURPLE saga and history. The California Jam performance would singlehandedly earn one of many legendary status' for DEEP PURPLE'S history and for the Mk3 line-up. This performance is quite simply, one of DEEP PURPLE'S finest hours.

DEEP PURPLE'S legendary historic California Jam concert performance is the true stuff of stories that is made of Rock n' Roll legend. DEEP PURPLE was to be one of the main attractions and headlines at the California Jam Rock Festival 1974. EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER also co-headlined with DEEP PURPLE. However, both headlining bands would have a great deal of support from great legendary billing bands such as BLACK SABBATH, SEALS & CROFTS, BLACK OAK ARKANSAS, THE EAGLES, RARE EARTH and EARTH, WIND & FIRE. It was also estimated that 200,000 fellow Rock n' Rollers attended this historic festival. And now, without further delay, it is now time for me to take all of you on a journey back in time to the California Jam Rock Festival 1974 at the Ontario Motor Speedway, Saturday, 6 April 1974 where DEEP PURPLE, after stalling for a little while due to Ritchie Blackmore's refusal to perform until the day turns to night, are finally ready to take the stage.

The beginning of DEEP PURPLE'S legendary historic immortal story on 6 April 1974 was doomed from the start. Thanks to DEEP PURPLE'S own lead and rhythm guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, there was already a controversy and scandal building and intensifying before the band even stepped foot on the stage. DEEP PURPLE was given the option of closing the show or going on second to last. The band chose to go out at night or dusk and close the show. DEEP PURPLE, throughout its history, has always liked to perform at night since they believed that the musical effect becomes greater. However, the band and its entourage anticipated and figured that they would never go on much before the night began to fall, because nearly all Festivals had operated with numerous delays or technical problems. Unfortunately, for DEEP PURPLE, that was not the case with the California Jam Rock Festival. The Festival was well organized and ran like a well oiled machine.

According to the attached linear notes, the Festival was presented on a triple stage that was moved around on a series of flatbed railroad cars. While one act performed, two others were being set up and wired for the show. The day long Festival event went off without a hitch and was almost 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Late in the afternoon, when the sun was still shining, the show's producers had informed DEEP PURPLE'S entourage that their stage was already set up and they were ahead of schedule and the band would have to hurry to the stage and get into position.

And as another saying goes, that's when all of the trouble started and all hell broke loose. Eventually, most of the band relented and were prepared to perform, but Blackmore simply refused. According to numerous DEEP PURPLE personnel and entourage, it was always Ritchie that caused these kind of problems. The band would NEVER forget the show's producer storming into the band's dressing room screaming at them like he wanted to kill. The show's producer threatened and told them that if they didn't get their a*ses on the stage by the time he counted to thirty, they will never work and perform in the U.S. again.

Ritchie just sat there and ignored him like he wasn't even there. This producer is screaming and yelling like there's no tomorrow and Ritchie is just sitting calmly while tuning his guitar. According to co-manager Tony Edwards, this producer was going out of his mind, trying to get the band on stage. The producer was standing outside of the band's trailor threatening and screaming warnings that if the band does not come out of that f*c*in' winnebago by the time he counts to thirty, they're off the show! After the thirty second countdown ended, ABC decided to call Blackmore's bluff and was seriously about to announce that the band would not be appearing or performing tonight. But before ABC would do that, a PURPLE roadie whose name is Ozzie Hopper would jump on stage and shout "Hey, you people..., ARE YOU READY OR DEEP PURPLE?" The crowd responded with a deafning applause. Hopper would then stress that the technicians were having some problems with the equipment but the band will be up soon.

In the meantime, ABC was FURIOUS by Hopper's statement. With that simple gesture and remark, Hopper was the saving grace that had de-fused the network's threat. The band truly believed that Hopper saved the day for them. The band was now confident that the network could not kick them off the show after that.

Eventually, as the dusk night approached, DEEP PURPLE would hit the stage and let their music do all of the talking by breaking loose by beginning their performance with a explosive version of "Burn." Both Lord and Blackmore would set the stage and tone of the show with hot solos. The band next broke into "Might Just Take Your Life," followed by a Bluesy rendition of "Mistreated," complete with Coverdale's almost note-for-note cop of Robert Plant's vocal vamp from the end of ZEPPELIN'S live version of "I Can't Quit You." After Coverdale apologized for swallowing flies while singing between verses, the band decided to tease the crowd with a rare and brief Jazz interlude. The crowd was expecting the band to tear into and perform "Lazy," but what the crowd got instead was a terrific and blistering version of "Smoke On The Water." Coverdale's merciless lead vocals stayed true to the original vocal arrangement performed by Ian Gillan, but the band improved the song near the end when Coverdale and Hughes dueted on the last verse. The band played a few more a*s kickin' Rockers such as "You Fool No One," "The Mule" and the incredible Hard Rocker "Spacetruckin'," thrilled the crowd with memorable solos by Lord, Blackmore and drummer Ian Paice. The band would close the show and Festival with a lengthy and extremely frantic version of "Spacetruckin'."

Just when you think that the trouble had faded away, the REAL trouble just laid ahead and was about to begin. Numerous DEEP PURPLE personnel and entourage had told the cameramen not to get between Ritchie and the audience. However, there was one cameraman that didn't pay attention and gradually creeped up on to the stage between Ritchie and the crowd. Seeing this, suddenly, Blackmore would become extremely furious resulting in ramming the neck of his guitar into the videographer's or cameraman's $70,000 TV camera, knocking the camera operator down to the ground. At that point, Ritchie just kept whacking the camera again and again.

After Blackmore was satisfied with the destruction of the cameraman's equipment, he then made a surprising request and instructed his guitar technician Ron Quint, to pour gasoline all over his amps and set them afire. In fact, there was so much gasoline on the amps that when they were set on fire, a massive explosion occurred, which sent Blackmore flying. At one point, it was rumored that his hair actually caught on fire.

DEEP PURPLE left the stage in TOTAL DESTRUCTION and walked into the wings only to be greeted by an army of screaming technicians, producers and lawyers for ABC along with some mighty angry police and fire officials. When it was clear that the Fire Marshall was going to have Blackmore arrested, Hopper quickly whisked Blackmore away to the nearest waiting helicopter to make a quick getaway. Blackmore arose from the grounds of the race track, as several Police and Fire department vehicles chased after him with lights and sirens blasting and blaring in hopes of capturing him.

The next day, there was hell to pay. Everybody went for the band's throats but few people actually saw anything of it. In fact, the band was ordered to pay damages to the camera and to a stage technician from the festival who claimed his hearing was permanently damaged. Believe it or not, the band got out of the whole mess with an unbelievable $10,000 which was split between the camera repairs and the stage technician whom the band settled with.

IS THAT ONE HELL OF A STORY OR WHAT!

I deeply apologize for the long and lengthy review but once I start writing, especially about this particular story, I just felt that it was my duty to tell it the way it is. Anyway, I really hope that you truly enjoyed reading this review as much as I truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. DEEP PURPLE RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
