The new queen of the Portuguese folk music known as fado shines in the impressive Mariza Live in London, a 2003 concert recorded at the Union Chapel in London. The twentysomething Lisbon resident has been hailed as the successor to fado legend Amália Rodrigues; now, after two well-received CDs, comes Mariza's first filmed concert performance, and it is stunning. No wonder fado has been compared to the blues: the actual musical content is different, but in terms of both origin (both come from a variety of cultures, in this case including strains of Spanish, Brazilian, and African sounds) and lyrical bent (with its constant element of saudade, roughly translated as yearning or longing, fado, like blues, is mournful, soulful music), it's every bit as deep. Mariza is backed primarily by acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar, and "Portuguese guitar," a 12-string instrument that looks something like a lute and sounds a bit like a Greek bouzouki; there is some piano as well, and Guy Barker's muted trumpet provides "O Deserto" with a pronounced jazzy feel. But the singer is the main attraction here, and the power and passion of Mariza's delivery on "Barco Negro" and nearly all the others in the 16-song set, including more upbeat, celebratory numbers like "Oica La o Senhor Vinho" (the introductions are in English, but the tunes are all in Portuguese) are undeniable. Add to that Mariza's black cloak and clothing, her stylish, peroxide-blonde perm, and her highly theatrical movements and expressions, along with the darkened chapel and superb lighting, and you've got an audio-visual experience so dramatic and moving that it easily renders the language barrier irrelevant. --Sam Graham

Description
Eric Clapton has achieved the seemingly impossible, becoming more popular in his most recent 10 years onstage than in his first decade in the spotlight. His 1997 Live In Hyde Park home video documented a triumphant concert of the previous summer that followed his massive "Tears In Heaven" hit a few years earlier. This is classic rockin' and guitar-wailin' blues-is-king Clapton, from new versions of his Derek and The Dominos' "Layla" and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" to Cream's "White Room" and "Badge" to his solo hit of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" to B.B. King's "Every Day I Have the Blues." Added to the original home video's lineup is Clapton's rendition of the Muddy Waters electric blues "Hoochie Coochie Man" and the blues standard "It Hurts Me Too," which Clapton reprised on From the Cradle. Other tracks include: Wonderful Tonight; Five Long Years; Tearin' Us Apart; Old Love; I'm Torn Down; Holy Mother. 89 minutes.

British singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae's star continues to rise with Live in London & New York, a combination DVD (the London concert) and CD (the New York gig, with the same songs in the same running order). Like many of the best artists of her generation, Rae has absorbed her various influences unself-consciously, and she knows intuitively which ones suit her own style. She might love Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, but by her own admission, Rae's voice lacks the sheer power and bravura chops of those and other diva wailers; thus it's the more intimate and dusky sound of Billie Holiday, another major inspiration, that reveals itself in her material (all of it written or co-written by Rae, with one exception). She might have been a rocker as a youngster--hence her tasty cover of Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You," during much of which she's accompanied by piano and acoustic bass only--but it's the sensibility of classic-period Stevie Wonder that comes through in Rae's exceptional melodies (like "Put Your Records On," probably her best-known tune at the time of these 2006 shows; there are also several numbers on which she accompanies herself on acoustic guitar) and gentle R&B shadings. Sade may also come to mind while one listens to Rae; although the latter's voice is somewhat more coarse (and occasionally mildly out of tune), she shares the former's penchant for the kind of sensuous and soulful pop music that will appeal to actual grownups. Add to that a winning, modest stage presence and a style that, influences notwithstanding, is genuinely her own, and Corinne Bailey Rae is a winner. DVD extras include four promo videos and a brief featurette. --Sam GrahamDescription

Description
"Live In London" is the documentation of a dream that long-time die-hard Testament fans have been waiting for: the reuniting of the band's "classic" lineup. Featuring vocalist Chuck Billy, guitar virtuosos Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, bassist Greg Christian, and original drummer Louie Clemente (along with Testament & White Zombie alumnus John Tempesta as a second drummer), the band rips through classic Testament fan favorites in this show, shot in London earlier in 2005.Among the leaders of heavy metal over the past twenty years, Testament have always provided the rock solid proof that great song writing, regardless of genre, will always transcend time. Their crucial contributions to the early thrash metal surge of the mid to late 1980s helped to develop a sound that forever changed the face of heavy music and resonates just as loudly today. With all of their Bay Area peers either calling it a day or drastically altering their sound, Testament has remained a worldwide metal ambassador throughout the 1990's and into the new century.

The Corrs: Live in London once again affirms the Irish siblings' position as one of the best live acts around and resolutely challenges the assumption that studio recordings are always better than the live versions. Hearing and viewing their stunning performance of tracks such as "Forgiven, Not Forgotten" and "Dreams," it's easy to understand why the band still has such universal appeal. The concert cinematography is excellent, with crystal-clear picture quality. The group's exquisite rendition of "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)," included as a bonus track, is one of the numerous DVD features. The live performances of "Dreams," "Radio," and "Breathless" can be viewed from five different camera angles, and the 20-minute "Access All Areas" documentary is excellently produced and provides an added, more personable dimension to the DVD. --John Galilee

Mick Hucknall calls it "one of the finest live performances of my career," and it's tough to argue with that assessment after viewing this two-hour concert by the singer-songwriter and his group Simply Red. Recorded in 1998, Live in London offers a generous 26 songs, most of them Hucknall's own (including the superb "Holding Back the Years") but also including some interesting covers (the Hollies' "Air That I Breathe," the O'Jays' "Money's Too Tight to Mention"). The 12 musicians and backup singers offer able support throughout, giving the music both a funky edge and a smooth groove (perhaps a bit too smooth--the middle of the road occasionally beckons). There's little in the way of frills or theatrics here; this is nothing more or less than a filmed concert performance, and Hucknall and Simply Red are plenty good enough to pull it off. --Sam GrahamDVD:
