This is an entertaining and valuable document, bringing together a disparate lot of live performances from Roy Orbison's career for a tour de force package of the singer's greatest songs, all in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Digital Surround. It's a treat to see Orbison at several stages of his career, in black & white and color, in a variety of places and with different musicians; the absence of dates or locations is a drag, but those familiar with Orbison's video catalog will recognize his Live at Austin City Limits show and the superb Black & White Night (with Bruce Springsteen and a host of other big-name backers). Not all of the clips are up to that standard, but this is still a superb collection by a great pop artist. Extras include his "Crying" video duet with k.d. lang, an audio-only version of a 1957 recording, and more. A must-have for Orbisonites. --Sam Graham

Description

For the first time ever, some of the all-time greatest performances from one of history's most unique artists are collected in one place on DVD. Roy Orbison may not have had the gyrating hips of Elvis to make the crowds go wild, by what he did posess was a voice so uncannily emotional and honest that his audience would sit in total silence, savoring every note and hanging on every word, While Roy's formidable songwritng skills could make virtually any singer sound good, when applied to his beautifully peculiar pipes, his creations simply soared. Featuring his timeless classics "Only the Lonely," "You Got It," "Crying," "Pretty Woman" and many more, this is Roy Orbison at his absolute finest. With special guest appearances by k.d. lang, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, and many more!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest hits of Roy Orbison! .......2005-08-18

The specials features are 2 musical videos, when where Roy Orbison does a deut with k.d. lang on Crying, and She's a Mystery to Me. And there have special appprances frpm Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Tom Wait, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, k.d. lang, and T Bone Bournett, all from the Black and White Night concert. The songs are

2. In Dreams
3. Blue Bayou
4. Ooby Dooby

7. Claudette
8. That Lovin' You Feelin' Again
9. You Got It
10. Crying
11. Walk on
12. Running Scared
13. Oh, Pretty Woman

What I like about this, they have the program on dvd, and cd both together, so that you can listen to it, if you don't feel like watching it, or you can watch it if you don't feel like listening to it. I haven't really see the specials features, but in bewtween songs (or most of them) Roy Orbison talks, a gives you a little history about his carrier, and the songs that he pefromances. I might have swpet Walk on for Candy Man. You Got iIt was recored, and played on his final cd "Mystery Girl" that was released in 1989, after his death. It was too bad that he died when he did, but he had a great carrier, and there are plenty of songs, and dvds that his fans can rememeber him by.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing mellow vocalist.......2005-02-05

The more you listen, the more you appreciate the music of Roy Orbison. Most of the songs are quite emotional but lively. Background instrumental music is also amazing. Video is not quite perfect, but what matters most to me is the audio.

Highly recommended. To see is to believe, find out for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the Big O.......2005-08-26

This is defenitely not the best overview of Roy Orbison's amazing talents, but it is a great way to get a quick glimpse of all that set him apart from the rest - the heartfelt lyrics, the superb musicianship, and above all else, that magnificent soaring voice.

Roy Orbison's widow Barbara has taken a lot of care to put together this package which combines 12 live performances spanning Roy's career from the 1960s to the late 1980s and an early promotional video (for "Walk On") from the 1970s.

The video and audio quality is fairly spotty but a great deal of care has been taken to clean up these clips and upgrade them to 5.1 sound. In most cases, the refurbished tracks sound great and there is no gimmicky processing of old mono clips into surround sound. (For proof, check the mono-to-5.1 comparison of "Crying" that is included as a bonus feature.)

The surround sound comes in two flavors - Dolby Digital and DTS, but it's the latter that really shines. And there's also the original mono sound on some clips for the purists.

Even the old mono clips sound terrific, and have great presence. But of course they aren't a patch on the 5.1 clips from "A Black And White Night" and "Live At Austin City Limits" remixed by Elliott Scheiner.

The down side? If you already own the two above-named DVDs, this one has a lot of material in common with them.

The up side? The great care that has been lavished on this set, including little touches like the snippets from a Roy Orbison interview that play between the songs and let you hear from the man himself about he created and recorded some of his best known songs.

You also get two bonus videos - "Mystery Girl" and the duet version of "Crying" recorded with k.d. lang that have been remixed into 5.1 sound, and two electronic press kits.

One of the kits features interviews with the musicians who helped finish "King Of Hearts", Orbison's posthumous album, and the other focusses on the making of the video for "I Drove All Night" featuring a very young Jennifer Connelly and Jason Priestley. As a real bonus, this kit features the complete video for the song too.

Not a bad choice if you're looking for a DVD that introduces you to the many charms of the Big O.

3 out of 5 stars Great Music and Footage, But Most is Recycled from Other DVD's.......2005-08-08

If you don't own any Orbison footage on DVD, this is no doubt a great way to become acquainted with him via DVD. However, if you are an Orbison fan and own his other DVD's and videos (which are few in number), then the "Greatest Hits" DVD offers little in the way of footage you don't already own.

The DVD relies heavily on footage from "Black and White Night", the "Combo Concert" from the 60's, his "Austin City Limits" show, and clips from the "Anthology" collection, all of which have already been released on DVD (and in the case of "Combo Concert", VHS only). The only totally "new to DVD" songs included in the main feature are two songs from an early 80's live show (probably a year or two before his "Austin City Limits" performance).

The bonus features on the DVD offer some additional "new to DVD" footage, which is a good consolation considering all but two songs on the main feature are common for any Orbison fan.

This DVD is still a must-own for Orbison fans for the new material that is presented on this DVD, and the price is somewhat fair. I just wish they would have taken the opportunity of this DVD to include more footage that Orbison fans didn't already own.

5 out of 5 stars All music DVDs should be this good.......2004-12-13

Roy Orbison's widow Barbara has put a lot of thought and effort into packaging compilations of his work and there is a wide selection available now, so you may want to visit his offical website and peruse what's available before deciding what to buy, but one thing is for certain; you cannot go wrong with this particular DVD. It has a great selection of concert tracks from various stages in his career, then when you switch to the special features you find almost a whole disk's worth of video and audio extras. There are even original and remastered versions of one audio ("An Empty Cup"), for comparison. So it is a great DVD for the serious collector as well as a perfect introduction for those new to Orbison.

Between tracks, Roy says a few words about each song. He comes across as personable, modest and sensitive.

He was at times a bigger star in Britain and elsewhere than in his native US, and his contribution to Rock 'n' Roll has only recently been fully acknowledged. This DVD should help put the record straight.

5 out of 5 stars You Got(ta have) It!.......2004-08-14

His greatest hits and truly a great DVD. I first viewed this as a special on TV and had to have it. The clips chosen are superb. The three from A Black and White Night, with Orbison backed by other music greats, are a treat - the contributions from Springsteen, Costello, Souther, Burton, et al are absolutely magical. And if you love "You Got It", you will have to get this DVD, if only for the exciting and memorable performance of that great song. Orbison introduces most of the clips, with interesting and witty stories behind the songs, including a great anecdote about how he hit that final high note on Running Scared. There's also a lot of extra value, including press kits with more interviews and music, tributes from those who knew and worked with him; and also the She's a Mystery to Me video. On Amazon's 1 to 5 scale, I'd like to give this 10!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT DVD!!!!!!!!.......2004-08-02

This is a great DVD. Two versions of 'Crying', the first version is alone in the 60's and the second version is with K.D.Lang in the 80's. Look early TV performance of 'Only the Lonely'. You also can see in this DVD the excellenet promo video made for 'She's A Mystery To Me'.
Another highlights: 'I Drove All Night', 'Blue Bayou', Live performances of 'Running Scared' and 'In Dreams' from 1982, 'Pretty Woman' from 'Black An Night'.
You should buy this DVD.

An interesting idea that works well enough to merit attention from Orbison's fans and students of rock history, Roy Orbison: The Anthology provides a home for desultory clips of the much-missed pop pioneer in live and lip-synched performances. The emphasis, of course, is on the midnight dreams of his familiar canon: "Only the Lonely" (from an American Bandstand appearance), "Oh, Pretty Woman" (an odd film of Orbison meandering through a Spanish villa), "In Dreams" (a music video piggybacking shots from David Lynch's Blue Velvet, which featured the song prominently). But what really makes this a special project are interview highlights with a number of Orbison's more famous admirers: k.d. lang, Bono, Robert Plant, Don Was, the Bee Gees, and Raul Malo of the Mavericks among them. Rather than merely rummage through personal thoughts and memories, these talking heads bring their focused craftsmanship to the table and offer eloquent appreciations of Orbison's unique gifts. Bono speaks of a certain masculine freedom imparted by Orbison's powerful falsetto, the way it leaves "a man open" to a fuller experience of emotion. Lang marvels at her late friend's songwriting construction on "Running Scared," and Plant ingeniously sums up the solitary, nocturnal appeal of Orbison's classic hits as "pillow talk" for the wounded. For dessert, there's a clip of the star performing "Blue Bayou" in concert, and the late-'80s video of Orbison and lang locked in an impassioned duet on "Crying." --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Performances spoiled by inane commentators.......2006-08-21

This DVD is very disappointing. Whoever edited this DVD is not a music lover. Roy's performances are interrupted and spoiled by the gushing comments of the Bee Gees, Robert Plant, k d lang, etc. It's not a DVD that one can play often for enjoyment because one does not want to hear the comments of the other performers more than once. The Roy Orbison's Black & White concert DVD is vastly superior.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Roy's best songs.......2002-12-08

The 50 minute dvd contains 13 of Roy's big songs, most filmed when they were made famous 40 years ago. Audio and video quality has been cleaned up somewhat on the dvd, but is not of today's standards. Interesting introductions and commentary by many famous singers and songwriters make the presentation a very good one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Of The Ballad..........2001-04-06

I would highly recommend any Roy Orbison Fan to purchase this, It is simply a perfect tribute to a musical genius! This Legend sings his songs straight from his Soul, No one can sing these songs better than The Master Of The Ballad!

5 out of 5 stars A Detailed History of Roy Orbison.......2000-05-30

This is a great DVD.It shows Roy live in concert, doing promo videos for single releases, singing on TV in the early years. It has interviews with people like the Beegees,Jeff Lynne(of ELO fame),K D Lang(who features in a video duet with Roy) and others praising Roy.It even has a song from the famous "black and white night"with a beaming Bruce Springsteen looking on. It also has very detailed liner notes telling Roys history from the 1950's onwards.Well worth the money for fans of Roy Orbison.

5 out of 5 stars Orbison at his best...........2000-03-20

If you are a Roy Orbison fan...this is must see...the music alone, especially the stirring duet rendition of "Crying" with k d lang, is worth the price of admission...but you get so much more...interviews with some of music's top performers, concert footage from today and yesterday, information about the man and his music that you may never have known..."Anthology" should be in everyone's DVD player or VCR...if you never see it, it will be your loss.....
