Taped as a lavish cable television special in 1997, One Night Only trades on the Bee Gees' shape-shifting career as pop survivors. Over the course of 111 minutes, this straightforward concert, produced at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and groomed for both video and CD posterity, sprints through 31 songs from their past three decades. Even after the inevitable disco jokes are expended, and the jaundiced viewer contemplates the role hats, hairspray, and comb-overs now play in dressing the once stylishly long-haired troika, the Gibb brothers' signature vocal harmonies and hook-laden song craft beg respect.

Casual listeners can't be blamed for equating the Bee Gees with the dance floor bonanza they reaped through 1978's Saturday Night Fever, yet that commercial zenith was actually the culmination of a comeback for a group that had seemed washed up by the early '70s. One Night Only thankfully takes an even-handed view of both their original late '60s hits ("Massachusetts," "To Love Somebody," "Lonely Days"), building from a cannily Beatle-browed vocal sound, and the '70s blue-eyed soul ("Jive Talkin'," "Nights on Broadway") that led them naturally into disco. The Fever hits are here, as are Gibb originals that clicked for other acts; the family circle also widens for a posthumous duet with their late brother, Andy Gibb, while Celine Dion gets star billing in the collaborative "Immortality." --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF THE BEE GEES!.......2007-07-04

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic DVD concert performance entitled "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of Australia's and England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's and Australia's favorite sons, T-H-E B-E-E G-E-E-S! "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" was originally released on DVD in 1997 on Eagle Vision. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic concert or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

There isn't anything new or different that I can say or add about THE BEE GEES that hasn't already been said. THE BEE GEES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest most sacred anthems ever. And get this, THE BEE GEES are in the TOP 5 MOST SUCCESSFUL BANDS IN THE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC! When brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb joined forces, THE BEE GEES would be born and Rock n' Roll would NEVER be the same again. Prior to 1997, THE BEE GEES were still releasing great albums to highly critically acclaim but their impact and popularity in the music world was slowing down and becoming very quiet. Perhaps it was because the album PR or promoting was not as effective as it should have been. However, 1997 would change all of that. 1997 would soon prove to be one of the greatest moments in THE BEE GEES careers as well as their lives. 1997 would also prove to be one of Rock n' Roll's greatest shining moments during one of Rock's finest hours for THE BEE GEES.

Just read what the back cover of this legendary concert DVD had to say: 1997 was an amazing year for THE BEE GEES, with inductions into The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, plus Lifetime Achievement Awards from the British, American and World Music Awards, the Australian Record Industry, and the German Bambi Awards topped off by a 'ONE NIGHT ONLY' concert at the famed MGM Grand Garden Arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Neveda, THEIR ONLY LIVE CONCERT IN 1997 AND FIRST U.S. CONCERT IN NEARLY 10 YEARS.

The brothers Gibb perform their greatest hits from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, including many songs written for and made hits by other artists but never recorded by THE BEE GEES. PLEASE NOTE: You can hear the songs written for and made hits by other artists that WERE RECORDED
BY THE BEE GEES on the 2-CD set greatest hits compilation album entitled "BEE GEES, THEIR GREATEST HITS, THE RECORD." If you would like, you can refer to and read my review on this legendary compilation album when time permits.

And the audio never sounded better! This concert DVD edition is released in a special DTS Surround Sound so you can hear this concert the way it was truly intended to be heard or listened to. The DTS Surround Sound is like 3-D in sound that actually makes you feel like you are actually there in the audience.

As for THE BEE GEES music, I guess that you can say that their music speaks for itself. In my opinion, the "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" DVD concert is without a doubt, a true testament of the greatness, genius and musical creativity of three masterminded brothers. This legendary concert is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, way far ahead of their time. This concert is a trip down memory lane for all of us. This legendary historic concert is the story of THE BEE GEES, their music is their story. And now without further delay, it gives me great pleasure in taking all of you back in time to the MGM Grand Garden Arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1997 where THE BEE GEES are about to take the stage and make music history AGAIN!

It is now time to let the sound and music of THE BEE GEES to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically as it was originally and truly intended. "BEE GEES, ONE NIGHT ONLY" has and contains 32 legendary hits in all. This legendary concert begins with the forever BEE GEES brilliantly stamped trademark classic anthems "You Should Be Dancing," "Alone," "Massachusetts," the beautifully slow soothing "To Love Somebody," "I've Gotta Get A Message To You," "Words," "Closer Than Close," the beautifully slow "Islands In The Stream," "One," THE BEE GEES tribute to their late brother Andy Gibb, "Our Love (Don't Throw It All Away)," the electrifying "Night Fever," the beautifully and incredibly well arranged falsetto sung number "More Than A Woman," "Still Waters," "Lonely Days," "Morning Of My Life," "New York Mining Disaster 1941," the beautifully slow and angelic "Too Much Heaven," "I Can't See Nobody," "Run To Me," "And The Sun Will Shine," the amazing "Nights On Broadway," the beautifully slow soothing anthem "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart," "Heartbreaker," the beautifully slow and breathtaking anthem "Guilty," "Immortality," "Tragedy," "I Started A Joke," "Grease," the funkish "Jive Talkin'," one of the most beautifully slow orchestrated anthems ever, "How Deep Is Your Love," the legendary theme from Saturday Night Fever, "Stayin' Alive" and the explosive ending just like the way this legendary concert began, "You Should Be Dancing."

All in all, this is one hell of a concert that everyone of all ages should own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal DVD music collection. This legendary concert has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, after this legendary historic 1997 concert performance, THE BEE GEES were back on top and on top of the world where they truly belonged. Everything was fine in THE BEE GEES world until tragedy struck once again. On 12 January 2003, Maurice Gibb, one of the original founding members of THE BEE GEES would pass away and perhaps silence one of the all-time greatest bands in Rock n' Roll history forever. I realize that it would truly be extremely hard for the remaining two brothers to carry on without without their beloved brother. All I can say in this matter is that time slowly heals and only time will tell what will become of this legendary band in the future. One thing that is certain and for sure is that THE BEE GEES have forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. So here's to you Barry, Robin, the late great Maurice, and the late great Andy. Thanks for the great memories and moments. MAURICE GIBB LIVES! ANDY GIBB LIVES! And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEE GEES FOREVER! R.I.P. MAURICE ERNEST GIBB, Born 22 December 1949, Died 12 January 2003 at age 54. Also R.I.P ANDREW ROY GIBB, Born 5 March 1958, Died 10 March 1988 at age 30. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Bee Gees - One Night Only - DTS.......2007-07-02

I love the Bee Gees, always have. The DTS version gives you that fantastic Bee Gees music as it should be heard ... no problem there, loved it. My only beef is the FULL SCREEN presentation ... UGH! I don't know if this thing ever came out in a WIDESCREEN version, but never saw it available.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-05-23

The BeeGees consistently awe and amaze me. The performance is incredible. I would highly recommend this dvd. The only disappointing thing is that my favorite BeeGees song (Love You Inside Out) is missing. But the songs that are here are so well done that I don't hesitate to give 5 stars.

This Is Where I Came In: The Official Story of the Bee Gees
There have been a lot of durable family groups in popular music over the years, but it would be hard to name one that has lasted longer, and succeeded as consistently, as the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb and his younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, were making TV and radio appearances in Australia as early as 1960 before returning to their native England and joining the Beatles-led British Invasion, and they're still at it more than 40 years later. All of that is duly chronicled in this two-hour documentary (produced in 2000), along with a great deal more: the personal problems that led to a breakup in the early '70s; the unparalleled success of the Saturday Night Fever era; their occasional missteps and failures (e.g., the abominable Sgt. Pepper movie); the rise and tragic fall of brother Andy; the respect their success finally earned them in the '90s; and so on. The format is pretty standard; interviews, photos, home movies, and concert footage all contribute to a straight, chronological telling of the Bee Gees' tale. But no stone is left unturned, and the Gibb Brothers (not to mention everyone else who's interviewed) have plenty to say. Best of all, there's lots of the Bee Gees' music, including a video of the title track of the 2001 album This Is Where I Came In, after which the film is named. In the end, we're left with the impression the Bee Gees would probably want us to have: that these guys have written, recorded, produced, and performed literally hundreds of great songs. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Loved it.......2007-06-27

For fans of any era of the Bee Gees, this is an awesome selection to purchase. The live concert was great, it even contained a few songs not usually found on other albums, such as them singing Grease instead of that other guy on the soundtrack. Also includes Run To Me and Heartbreaker, both of which I don't have yet on CD, but will soon.
The biography story was especially great, maybe a bit long for some, (two hours I think), but really great for the devoted fan. This was recorded before Maurice died, so it's also interesting to hear them speak of each other and their love even before the tragedy. Also included on the DVD is their new video, This Is Where I Came In.
I shared the set with my mom who was a bit skeptical at first and doesn't often find time to watch such things, but she really loved it too, every minute of it she said. She's gonna buy her own copy asap, you should too.

5 out of 5 stars The Official Story - Extraordinary experience.......2007-04-10

The previous reviews we read before getting this production fell short to what we got...not only a flashback to our 'Saturday Night Fever' times but also the lasting impression of knowing the real insights of their career, the toll in their family and the perseverance that still lasts. The B.G's have confirmed once more they are the greatest group ever (even beyond the Beatles). They cannot only sing but turn into lyrics the best of our human nature. Absolutely EXTRAORDINARY!

5 out of 5 stars Bee Gees fan should buy........2007-01-16

This is a great combination of two dvd's with one chronicling the group's history and background and the other is one of their final live performances. One Night Only has many touching moments that span from their early music, their family, and their many movie soundtracks. A display of different generations who enjoy their music.

5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY!.......2007-01-03

NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE WATCHED THIS DVD, I TRULY APPRECIATE THE QUALITY OF THE DVD PRODUCTION FORMAT AND THE PHENOMENALLY TALENTED BEEGEES

5 out of 5 stars Great Music - Great Story.......2006-07-12

With this DVD/CD set you get a great concert by one of the greatest song writing and performing groups ever. Having enjoyed the music of the Bee Gees for almost 40 years, and never seeing them in concert, it was a real treat.

While I have enjoyed their music I was never aware of their story. Learning about the many profesional and personal ups and downs and the impact these events had on their music and lives, and in many cases resulting in some of their best songs, gave me a greater appreciation for their music.

Get this set.

5 out of 5 stars Touching final curtain call for the Brothers Gibb.......2007-02-27

It would be but a few years after this triumphant return to the live stage that Maurice Gibb would tragically pass under unfortunate circumstances. In the mid to late 90s, the Brothers Gibb were enjoying a much-deserved and much-belated re-evaluation and renaissance of popularity, with the release of the great album Still Water. Not only that, but everything 70s was cool again- disco, bell bottoms, smiley faces- and of course, the "disco" inventors themselves, the swaggering, hairy-chested, big-teethed, gold-medallioned falsetto-singing Bee Gees.

But it is unfortunate that this iconic caricature attached to a popular fad of the era is what the Bee Gees are mostly known for. Because take away this albatross from their necks and what you have are amazing songs, dating back to the late 60s, when their unique take on Beatle-esque harmonics, combined with a talent for melodies of great sensitivity, melancholy, and beauty, as well as their trademark vibrato, created a distinct sound.

The fact remains that the Saturday Night Fever tracks were in the can BEFORE the movie, and were added at the request of boss Stigwood. These were not "disco" songs. They were funky, tropical Arif Mardin-produced Miami rnb/dance and sublime balladry. Granted, they took the disco ball and ran with it- but wouldn't you, given the opportunity? For a while there, the Bee Gees bestrode the pop world like a 3-headed beast. And unlike the Beatles, they outstayed their welcome, oversaturated and thrown into the trash heap of disco hatred, accelerated by the Sgt Pepper film debacle. Forced to retreat, they became in-demand songwriters and producers.

All that musical history is here, as Barry states as the show gets started. They re-trace 30 years of stunning songwriting genius. From the 60s into the early 70s, from the disco era, from the underestimated 80s and 90s tracks, as well as the classics written for others- including an emotional, poignant "duet" with Andy Gibb on Don't Throw It All Away. There is also a nice appearance by a Titanic-peaking Celine Dion, on the underrated gem "Immortality", with the Bee Gees on backing vocals.

With a great backing band, heavenly harmonies, people like Olivia Newton-John in the adoring audience, and the classic self-deprecating Gibb wit, humility and brotherly barbing, you can't lose on this wonderful concert.

5 out of 5 stars You Should Be Dancing!.......2006-08-07

I remember seeing this show on TV when first performed. I was impressed then, I'm still impressed now. Naturally, a person's voice will lower in register with age, so it should come as no surprise that Barry and the Brothers Gibb don't go sky-high in their harmonies as they used to. That said, they still have a three part harmony that's just beautiful and unique in all of pop music. Their unique vocal harmony and chemistry are front and center here,as they go through four decades of song, both their own hits and songs written for others. This show was performed and taped at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and the crowd seems a bit dressed up for a concert, but I guess they were dressed for a night out. The sound quality on this disc is fine, but I had to turn the volume higher for this show than on other concert discs I have, so perhaps a move up to DTS wouldn't be a bad idea. The picture quality is fine and razer-sharp. I don't think they left any song in their catalogue out, even having Andy Gibb, sadly departed, "Guest" in a beautiful quartet,"Don't Throw It All Away". Celine Dion appears as well, in "Immortality", and they sound so GOOD together one wonders why they haven't done more together since. Of course, all the "Saturday Night Fever" songs are here, and they are wonderful. All in all, this is a fantastic show, very straight-forward, with no gimics or flashy stage show to distract form the incredible three-part singing that is the hallmark of the BeeGees.

2 out of 5 stars A Very Disappointing DTS.......2006-02-26

I owned a 5.1 digital surround version of this dvd earlier and subsequently I purchased an amplifier with DTS. Because DVDs like ELO's Zoom Tour and Diane Krall's Live In Paris sound marvelously well in DTS I assumed Bee Gees One Night Only would sound equally good. What a disappointment!. The sound engineer did a very bad job indeed. The center channel produces no vocals and the back surround speakers have a very week sound, as well as delayed sound. This dvd does no justice at all to DTS.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!.......2006-01-26

Absolutely fantastic!!!! i've grown up with this music all my life....They are just brilliant.. don't think there is any words in the world to describe how i feel about this dvd. and to make things absolutely great i got the DVD at the brillaint price as well.

It just brings back so many great memories.....

WELL DONE GUYS! U DESERVE A GOLDEN MEDAL FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS TH EMUSIC INDUSTRY...

5 out of 5 stars I'm an amateur when it comes to the Bee Gees but this blew me away!.......2005-11-21

I am surprised of how good these guys are! They were around for 5 decades and brought out zillions of albums and toured so many times. And then this live concert came out!

I don't even know that much about them compared with other people but am just starting to get into them myself!

It has all their hits from the 1950's til their then-current album Still Waters. They do a duet with Celine Dion and it sounds heavenly to hear them sing together. I find it incredible the backing musicians can be with them for such a long time such as John Merchant and now even Andy Gibb (Barry's eldest son) plays with them at this concert.

There is a good vibe on this concert, the TV panel in the background is quite effective as it takes you down memory lane showing you their clips from various decades! The trio are all dressed in black, false setto or ordinary singing tone, they are hear in this vibrant concert still going strong after all these years! This 3 people deserve a gold medal for singing these songs so and keeping their fans and new generations of fans! Writings songs for such famous movies like Grease and Saturday Night Fever! They should be so proud of what they have acheived throughout their lifetime. Excellent song choice, great harmonies and good covers chosen!

Only one thing I didn't like is it's too hard to see Olivia Newton-John in the audience when they make a note about "Australian greats" -- they never focus the light on here properly enough, and when the little girl gives Barry the flower boquet, the poor little girl doesn't realize the song "Guilty" is about to start and Barry arrogantly tells her to "shoo!" while sweeping the flowers in front of her! Excuse me!

Oh well, I am not a picky reviewer and like to be as realistic as possible.

One other gripe I have is on the video edition, there was no song list! I find that rotten because I had to find the song list on Internet and then print it out and add a little sheet at the back of the video case! We expect the companies that release music items to tell you what songs are on where and when -- just like a DVD telling you how many scences the movie has!

Apart from these unfortunate disappointments, it's worth watching them! The sound is absolutely perfect! I love the guitarist -- he has such good timing and delivery was brillant.

Brillant music! Talented musicians! Great show! Get it now! They are "veterans," but far from dead!

Excuse me!
