A slightly dated but nonetheless fascinating snapshot of musical history, Beat Street is an urban musical detailing the roots of hip-hop. Set in early-1980s New York, the film focuses on the lives of a small group of young people setting their experiences against the larger backdrop of the city's burgeoning music scene. The story of up-and-coming DJ Kenny (Guy Davis) and his relationship with jazz musician Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong) may only be a device, but it's surprisingly effective, as is the ultimately tragic tale of graffiti artist Ramon (Jon Chardiet). The movie's real raison d'être, however, is to showcase the sounds of the street, so it's full of some of hip-hop's most influential names--Melle Mel, Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, the Rocksteady Crew, Jazzy Jeff, and Arthur Baker. And while the combination of electro and rapping may sound a little crude to modern ears, there can be no doubt that Beat Street is the sight and sound of history being made. --Phil Udell

Description

Widely considered the most influential hip-hop movie of all time, this "gritty, streetwise musical"(LA Herald-Examiner) features a who's who of the movement's early starsKool DJ Herc, KoolMoe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Melas well as the famous Rocky Steady Crew vs. New York City Breakers battle at the Roxy. Uniting the four elements of hip-hopbreakdancing, DJ-ing, MC-ing and graffitiinto an unforgettable experience, Beat Street is a true classic, packed with sharp lyrics, powerful moves and the flashiest dance sets the screen has ever seen! When rapper-DJ Kenny (Guy Davis) meets cultured jazz artist Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong), he is so inspired by her dedication that he vows to use his talents to escape the ghetto. But when his friend, a gifted graffiti artist, is killed in a tragic accident, Kenny comes face to face with the high price of artistic passion.

4 out of 5 stars Beat Street.......2007-05-24

I enjoyed this movie just as much as I enjoyed it over 20 years ago. It basically gives the East Coast Version of breakdancing and rap and how it got started

4 out of 5 stars solid gold.......2007-05-23

For anyone who ever had a rap/hip-hop/break-dance bone in their body this is the ultimate movie. Probably overshadowed in its time because of Fame, Footloose, and the antics of Michael Jackson, but this in my opinion ranks up there with the best of the dance culture. Unfortunately I lost those bones after growing taller, but this movie was a blast from the past and will stay high up on my DVD stacks.

4 out of 5 stars very good and interesting movie.......2007-03-09

the movie held your interest and had a good storyline about the youth of america

1 out of 5 stars Take It Off The Rack And It's Wack Put It Back.......2006-10-23

I don't know what's up with all of these 4-5 star reviews. This movie was awful. There was no plot and the movie just seemed to drag. Not even the guest appearances by Afrika Bambataa, Melle Mel, and the Rock Steady Crew could save it. I couldn't wait for it to be over with. The "graffiti" throughout the movie was absolutely awful. Ramo and his girlfriend were too white to have a baby that dark with curly hair. Guy Davis was fine back then, but not anymore. Rae Dawn Chong was just annoying. This is one movie I never want to see again.

4 out of 5 stars The Uncut Version.......2006-09-28

This movie is nostalgic for me. It reminds me of an era that I miss greatly. Many people here criticize its accuracy talking about bad grafitti, acting, love songs, etc. What do you guys mean? I am a New York Puertorican, Newyorican raised in Ravenswood Projects, Queens, Bushwick, Brooklyn and went to school in Spanish Harlem. This was back in the day when NYC was tough. La Familia, Ballbuster, Zulu Nation ruled the streets back then.

So I guess I got the right to say the movie accurately portrays life in NYC in the 80's. Some guy here criticized the love songs. C'mon man. What, people back then in the projects didn't love anyone?, had a girlfriend, etc? I find the movie to be so real that I definitely want to move back to NYC.

I know New York isn't the same. The South Bronx is being renovated. The gangs are gone. All the bombers, Lee jeans creased down the middle and finely pressed and jackets, the pumas and adidas with the thick laces in checkerboard formation, the boricuas with their wild Carribean looks, its ALL gone. But I need to go back, if not to play chinese handball at the schoolyard one more time.

I didn't give it 5 stars because there are deleted scenes. Why won't they come out with a DVD including those deleted scenes? I guarantee you everyone that bought this DVD would buy that one also.

You can read about this movie on all the other reviews. I have nothing to add! I want to promote the 2 videos that helped me really start to dance like this though! How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves, both available on Amazon. Check em out so you can dance like they do in this movie!

Wild Style's one of my greatest movies ,I Own the dvd And you Should too...you wont regret addin' it to your Collection :P

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE CLASSICS.......2006-03-28

I see some people saying this movie was not all it was said to have been. But you definately had to have seen this during the early 80's to relate to it and it was only meant for the people that actually lived in this time era. For most of you seeing it for the first time in 2006, it wont make sense to you and seem outdated. If your recollection of Hip Hop is N.W.A. or the likes, you will know nothing about this movie or relate to it in anyway - this is raw Hip Hop.

5 out of 5 stars verite narrative.......2006-03-13

The historical importance of this piece is clear. In addition, DV filmmakers should own a copy to study the method. First: know someone who knows everyone at the center of a cultural explosion in its early days. Second: give them creative license. Third: film all their friends. Fourth: stage an amazing concert in an abandoned amphitheater without a permit. Fifth: film everything. I love this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Not As Great As All The Hype .......2006-02-24

I hear all the time as i read hip hop mags and articles
all about how great Wild Style IS THE BEST HIP HOP movie
ever. Well I purchased it at the first of the year and guess
what it cant't hold Beat Street and Breakin or Krush Grooves
jockstrap. I think the movie Rappin or even the not so get
Lorenzo Lamas Hip Hop movie Body Rock has moments that's
even better than Wild Style. People who read this will
probably say what gives you the right to think you know so much
well me being 30 years old you can do the math. Thats around when the Hip Hop movement started. So if your a movie collector.
Go ahead and buy it but if you want a good movie to watch.
Then purchase somthing else.

A sort of fairy-tale sequel to Prince's enormously successful Purple Rain, 1990's Graffiti Bridge finds his purple highness not only singing and acting, but writing and directing, too. His performance suffers on all fronts. The film isn't a disaster, but it's safe to predict completist fans will make up most of its viewers. In the earlier film, Prince (known as the Kid) was fighting for his place on stage. This time he's fighting to keep his club safe from the money-grubbing hands of his musical rival, the Time's Morris Day, now a nightclub mogul. Day embodies spiritual, sexual, and economic corruption, while the Kid stands for salvation through music and a more redemptive form of lust.

The graffiti bridge conceit--a metaphor for a place of rejuvenation and artistic inspiration--is intriguing. Unfortunately, the bridge itself is merely a prop in a Paisley Park soundstage. Where Purple Rain was a movie that set new standards for lensing musical performances, Graffiti Bridge feels like a music video masquerading as a movie. Lucky for us, Prince cast the honey-voiced poet and performer Ingrid Chavez as Aura, part muse and part angel to both Day and the Kid. Her beauty and charisma ignite every frame she graces. --Michael Mikesell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Love Prince.......2006-12-28

I am truly a Prince fan. I think he is one of the greatest. This movie was not the best. Prince has so much soul, energy and life to his music. It might be a little different, but it makes him unique. I will continue to support his music and his movies. If you want to see something new and different then you should get this. I enjoyed it.

3 out of 5 stars A Prince fans unbiased opinion.......2006-08-29

When I first saw this in 1990
at age 14 it seemed somewhat "cult like"
It grew on me
The more I looked passed
the cheesy acting and
followed the story
the more I enjoyed it
The same will happen 2 U
Give it a chance

2 out of 5 stars Only if your a Prince Fan.......2006-08-17

In the early 1990's this movie was definitely made for that era. Just look at the clothing and hair. High top fades etc. Graffiti Bridge was definitely unique. It should have been released on cable t.v. instead of the theater. It was more of a musical then a actual movie. Prince somehow has his own ways of doing things in his own world. And he may not care about record sales or what people think of what he puts out, but it makes even the most loyal fans question what he is doing. The talent he has is amazing but he's become just a mediocur artist. This lack luster film may be remembered a hundred years from now. But as of now it's just what you call a get up and walk out film. I'm a prince fanatic, a die hard fan, but man the potential this guy has to be a mega star of our time he fails to meet. You haft to make people believe in you and really reach them and relate. If only Prince could relate to what people are feeling now and what they want. Prince somehow fell behind because the youth of this generation moved on while he stayed stagnet. I think he shut the world out and it just went on turning. Record sales may not matter to him, but fans you must keep loyal. Graffiti bridge is a film in my collection and I just look at it as my collection but nothing more. It's a film that makes you think. It's spiritual and there are some warm moments. Now Purple Rain is something not to be missed. I recommend that one. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars unique.......2006-08-07

i found the movie to be very creative and unique. i thought the appearance of the movie was very similar to how a stage set-up for a play would be. i thought that this was intentional and it helped to place the focus on the words/message. there was a lot of different things going on in the movie which i enjoyed: greed; true love; spirituality; determination; self-esteem issues; and jealousy. i am not a prince fan, but i love the contrast in personalities between prince and morris day, and how this contrast plays out as they pursue the same woman, who happens to be an angel who was sent to change both of them (clever). i gave the movie a 4 and not a 5 because although it was very artistic, morris day lost a battle i feel he should have won.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible !.......2006-06-20

This film is a huge waste of celluloid. It is horribly disjointed and the acting is awful by everyone throughout. The sets are abysmal meaning it is all too obvious that this was shot on a soundstage somewhere, there is no ambience or atmosphere at all. There is nothing to lift the spirits or get you involved in the lives of the one dimensional characters, it just leaves you feeling hollow.

The soundtrack is uninspired (with the possible exception of 'Joy In Repetition')

It's a stinker....pure and simple.

I can't understand why any movie studio would agree to release such poor work.

Product Description

Nick is a shy and rebellious teenage graffiti artist who roams the Portland and Seattle streets late at night, looking for empty walls to tag. But when he meets and become friends with another tagger, he starts to emerge from his alienated shell. Featuring striking cinematography, carefully sparse dialogue, and a surprisingly nuanced performance from newcomer Ruben Bansie-Snellman as Nick, this indie from writer/director James Bolton became a critical success on the festival circuit.

"The Graffiti Artist"

Art Frees You

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

I sat down today to watch James Bolton's "The Graffiti Artist" having no idea what to expect except that I had read mixed reviews. As a reviewer myself, I am very distrustful of what others say until I decide myself so I cleared my mind and sat back and waited for the movie to suck me in.
Set in an urban landscape, Nick, and finds himself a young post-modern boy is our hero. His agenda is to paint the walls of downtown Seattle and Portland. The walls represent capitalistic oppression to him as well as places that are just waiting to be exploited and to show his anger with the status quo. His bywords of "rupture the system' are his calling card and his life as a "tagger" seems to be his only desire. He worked alone until he met Jesse, another young tagger. The murals that they collaborate on seem to be the products of their kindred spirits. However, what they assume about each other is soon challenged and because of uncompromising political, ethical and emotional ideas, their relationship soon dissolves.
We go deep into the mind of a tagger ad examine the sub-culture of graffiti. Nick has exiled himself from society and belongs nowhere. He wanders within thoughts of ethical, professional, sexual and moral conflicts. He feels constantly confronted ad his response is through direct experience--graffiti. His desire to survive ad his struggle to do so in a way that challenges the conventions of the society in which he lives is what the film is all about.
There is not a great deal of dialogue in the film and it is not really necessary anyway. The beauty and surrealism of the story and the background music by Kid Loco causes the spoken word to be secondary in a film like this. Nick or "Rupture" as he tags himself manages to get in trouble with the law and moves from Portland to Seattle where he meets Jesse who tags himself "Flip". The two begin to tag together and develop a relationship and move in to live together. They become sexually intimate in one of the most sensuous scenes, albeit understated, ever filmed. Jesse becomes quite uncomfortable with the sexual feelings and goes back to Portland and poor Nick is left behind, alone. But the relationship plays only a small part in the film--it s more important to concentrate on what a fine artist Nick is and to what limits he will go to show it.
The movie is almost like a dream that takes the viewer into the life of a graffiti artist.
There is a little of Nick in all of us and we see this as the movie asks questions that are valid to all--the kinds of questions that should be asked more often. We get a look at a society as anonymous and see the need of individual expression; Nick represents both our hopes and our fears. He does what everyone wants and he does what he loves to do, compromising nothing in the process but he pays a very dear price for it. He lets us see that one who wants a self-determined life can indeed have one and he refuses to adapt to common constraints of society. He, therefore, faces the coldness of that society strongly and fearfully. The movie is not so much the story of a teenager but is more the story of social problems.
Ruben Bansie-Snellman is Nick, the teenager who lives a solitary life and commits himself to tagging under the name of "Rupture". He is a man against the world and his portrayal is a thing of beauty. He owns the movie and his magnetism helps him to create a character that is simple in his complexities. Snellman is Nick ad he ropes us in on his first appearance on the screen.
This is a beautiful and personal movie that has gone unnoticed. It is in no way mainstream cinema as it deals with urban art. It is not an easy movie to watch but you will feel rewarded when you see it. It is a gem and many of us will be able to relate to Nick--for that alone, it is worth a view.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent film from Portland Oregon.......2007-02-22

The Graffiti Artist is the second feature film from director James Bolton and it shows an increasing confidence from his previous film Eban and Charley. The relationship depicted in that earlier film gained the work notoriety by fact that the U.S. has higher age of consent laws than most other nations in the world but it also showed a low-key, naturalistic directorial vision that didn't feel the need to inflate the drama of it's small, intimate love story.

When people speak of low-budgets they often refer to independent productions that cost a few million rather than many millions of dollars and which are often in fact funded by the indie branches of existing studios. The Graffiti Artist on the other hand shows what is possible when one is truly working on a low-budget...shooting on video, with very minimal dialogue, only two main characters and no special effects to speak of. It's reminiscent of Gus Van Sant's first feature film Mala Noche in its ability to extract maximum impact from minimum resources.

The main actor Ruben Bansie-Snellman is in every scene and the gentle, introverted nature of his character is well portrayed. His most immediately endearing physical characteristic is his sleepy eye (or Ptosis as the medical world terms this "condition"), a harmless physical trait that is exactly the sort of "flaw" that makes a person seem more attractive and human. Given some of the awful gay-themed films that get produced (Another Gay Movie for example) it's nice to see a film that looks to break out of the traditional concepts and assumptions of gay life, in this case into the world of skateboarders and graffiti artists. The gentle, discreet lovemaking scene is one of the best I've seen simply because it grows organically out of the story and the director doesn't rush it or hype it with overdone music.

As for the plot itself, there are any number of ways to interpret the characters and their sexuality. I would read Jesse as a sort of Ennis Del Mar on a skateboard, deeply conflicted over his relationship with Nick...then again perhaps he is just a lonely kid going through a "difficult" period (as he calls it) who just badly needs some brief human contact. Nick remains an enigma, most likely gay, possibly bisexual, definitely open to the options that come his way.

What qualms I have are minor one's and perhaps one's that would only be noticed by someone who lives in th Northwest. For example, it seemed like the Union Station in Portland was being used in one scene when a character is supposed to be leaving from the King Street Station in Seattle and I question how one could ride the Amtrak line back and forth without one of those little tickets they require riders to show. I may have missed something though.

The director is currently working on an adaption of the acclaimed book Dream Boy by James Grimsley and at this point looks likely to become another chronicler of youth culture in the tradition of fellow Portlander Gus Van Sant.

1 out of 5 stars ehh a little to for my tastes.......2007-01-06

i like graffitti movies so i bought this ,
and right off the bat it has tha cheesy graff flick feel, but is put together good almost like BOMB THE System ,
but this was before that.it tries to show the relationship between graffti art and gang graffitti and the violence between the two,
hehhh.
but sooner than you think it turns into a an homo-erotic love storie about two juvenille boys , in the streets,
its has a preachy vibe and its really a weak plot. sad ending, ive given the director his due for taking on this story like this
but it think the majority of its target audience wont relate to the homosexual charcters..
get Bomb The System Instead,

4 out of 5 stars Nothing To Do.......2006-12-09

This is probably the oldest re-run of getting mad props. Racking cans, racking the camera and watching one kid have morals, but this is a movie.
I guess the gay part is different because the two monkeys have foreplay and pretty much say nothing at all. This one gives none and takes none.
This one's probably for the cash also but I don't know about society playing part in it. Continuity was cool in this one though.

3 out of 5 stars I liked it...but WATCH OUT your in for a BIG SURPRISE!.......2006-01-15

(((May contain Spoilers)))

This kid Ruben Bansie did really great in this movie!
He was very believable as a drifting graffiti artist.
This is a cool movie but,I guess this is one of those movies that everyone never sees eye to eye on.
We watched the same movie but we all have different interpretations from it.
For instance, alot of people saw Nick as
being gay but I actually didn't. I saw him as being
super obsessed with tagging up that it's left him
being a loner and he came to a point where even
just to make a friend (be him gay or not) he was
willing to "roll with the punches" even though he
wasn't.

He was constantly giving a Wary eye to Jesse
especially when he was offering to buy him a skateboard,
he was wondering "why is this dude being so nice to me?".
He stays at Jesse's place, Jesse comes out the shower
naked, and puts on his underwear in front of him, the way
Nick looked at him was like "this dude better not try nothing".
I dunno if it was just the way Nick's eyes looked (he kinda
had that droopy, lazy, high look) why I interpreted it this way.
He even pulled the covers to his chest a little closer after
he saw that.

Check the next scene at the smoothie shop, Jesse offered
to buy them breakfast, Nick says something to the affect of
"no I'm alright" or something..he had that Wary look again
of "why is this dude being so nice to me?"; Jesse probably
reading Nick's mind suddenly looks at the girl making the
smoothie then blurts out with an unexpected "cute isn't she?".
Then Nick suddenly satisfied with that, basically says I'll
take some too.

So all in all I was REALLY shocked when he so easily
succumbed to Jesse giving him ...a "hand".

It was almost like an unecessary twist to the movie.
And here I was thinking that they were going to make
masterpieces together and probably one or the other
was going to get jealous of the other over who's name
was more popular....boy was I wrong!

GRAFFITI ROCK & OTHER HIP HOP DELIGHTS (VARIOUS ARTISTS)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Slice of history served up **FRESH**!!.......2007-02-18

OK, Graffiti Rock might be considered pretty stale by some, and they wouldn't be entirely wrong...but it is stale in a completely charming way.

So if the question is: is this DVD worth purchasing? The answer is yes yes yall...if you're a hip-hop history head, if you were there, or if you wish you were there!

The DVD includes the 1/2 hour show (Graffiti Rock) itself, which, be forewarned, is amateurish and choppy as all get-out. Bad camera angles, cheesy special effects, garish lighting, a stilted and staged feeling. And yet, the show is also really fun! at times hilarious, and sometimes just interesting seeing how kids (from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Money Making Manhattan) danced, dressed, wore their hair, moved, talked, etc.

Special K and Kool Moe Dee (in a Kangol and ski goggles) are in the house rocking the mic as quasi-MCs for the whole corny show (a guy named Michael Holman is the actual host, producer, and originator of Graffiti Rock). Run DMC performs Sucker MCs live! Kool Moe Dee and Special K take on Run DMC in a battle--which in reality is exactly as lame as it sounds exciting--it's staged and sterile and silly, but so what?

And it don't stop--it keeps on and on with 45 minutes of rare and random Extras, including a nice piece featuring DJ Jazzy Jay, as well as Doug E Fresh rapping and beat boxing, Fab 5 Freddy rapping against a background of swirling colors and dancing children, lots of break dancing, some weird downtown party with a graf artist decorating a wall, a mini documentary about hip hop that includes a girl and a guy showing off their "fly" and "fresh" bboy outfits including shelltop Adidas with fat laces, a couple of basement sessions of various young rappers smoking, freestyling, and dancing (I remember coming upon scenes like this in NYC in the early '80s that were spontaneous and impossible not to stumble across because it was happening everywhere).

Earth shattering? No. But definitely **fun** in the way early hip hop was...pretty simple and unpretentious and almost innocent, lots of smiling party people in the place to be and love for the music. You may find yourself yourself poppin and lockin and old school rockin despite yourself!

2 out of 5 stars Old School 4ever.......2003-02-16

Graffiti Rock! wasnt there 2 episodes? anyways, while the show itself is classic, they couldve included some BETTER special features!i think they could've represented a lot better on this disc, whut about classic b-boy videos,or battles. Some of the stuff on there is just plain corny!i remember seeing the Nyc breakers perform in front of President Reagan...Twice!! Hello??,only 2 stars, maybe 2 and a half, could've gotten more.......

5 out of 5 stars Golden Memories..........2002-10-24

I remember the night this came on tv in NY back in 1984 (Channel 11 if I recall correctly). ...I had to settle for the critical raves of my 8th grade classmates the next day (mind you this was before we had a vcr). Eventually I got to see a bootleg of this strange slice of Hip Hop history and immediately fell under it's spell. Essentially, it's a Hip Hop American Bandstand. A half hour pilot for a show that was never to be. Too bad. With the line up of stars here, it's fun to imagine what might have been in store for future episodes. Some highlights: Run DMC performing "Sucker M.C.'s" and later "battling" The Treacherous Three, Shannon performing "Give Me The Night" (albeit lip synced, ala Soul Train), a performance by The New York City Breakers (who were at the time, conveniently being managed by the show's host and producer Micheal Holman). But by far, THE highlight of Graffiti Rock has to be all those kids dancing in the audience. Talk about a time capsule. And those clothes! Some of them went on to become famous (or semi-famous anyway). "Prince Vince" turned out to be Vincent Gallo of "Buffalo 66" fame, while B Girl "Debbie" is Debi Mazar of "Goodfellas", and a bunch of Spike Lee 'joints'. Can't forget about m'man Cormac either!
Also gotta love how every now and then, some Hip Hop catch-phrase would pop up on the screen like you were watching a fight scene in the old Batman tv show.
"FRESH!", or "WORD!" accompanied by what one has to assume was Michael Holman on an echo-heavy microphone.
Also LOT's of great extras. Stuff like old footage of Doug E Fresh beatboxing, K Rob on the mic, Jazzy Jay cutting it up, etc. etc.
Definately one for the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hip hop at it's purest form, ladies and gentlemen.......2006-01-06

After a recent trip to the local record store. Looking thru the DVD section and behold what do I find...Scribble Jam Vol. 7. This was a no brainer for me to buy it. The double sided disc containing the Rhymesayers 10th Anniversary Concert(this was a real treat for me since I have always been wanting to see the Rhymesayers label artists in concert, this is the next best thing). Of course, my favorite portion of the concert was the close to an hour Atmosphere set...Slug knows how to hype up a crowd. The second longest set came from MF Doom(always a treat)I was kind of disappointed that Brother Ali only performed one song(or at least that's what the DVD showed). I was really looking forward to see more of Ali perform. The second side of the disc is the actual jam battles consisting of the DJ battle, MC battle, B-Boy battle, beatbox battle and graf expo. As Slug and others refer to it in the DVD's interviews...this is taking it back to the roots of hip hop and the only show that does that. A treat for the Midwest and a definite for underground heads.

5 out of 5 stars We need more releases like this.......2005-08-21

This DVD has what ever real hip hop heads are looking for and maybe you can convert a few with this DVD. With performances from MF Doom it is a guarenteed winner for me already. But former Blaze Battle champ Eyedea and a sluw of other performances makes it even better.

The freestyle comp that is on the DVD is the other side highlight for me. This dvd is a good addition to anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, Rhymesayers on DVD!.......2005-04-06

I've been searching for a DVD with the likes of Atmosphere, Brother Ali and Eyedea & Abilities for awhile now. This DVD, spanning nearly 3 hours, exceeds all of my expectations. On one side of the DVD, you have the Rhymesayers' 10th Anniversary concert (no battling). The highlight of the concert is the 50 minute Atmosphere set (along with Murs for most of the set). Slug is so intimate with his audience in concert, making it a real treat. Eyedea shows everyone what's up with his mad skills on the mic, flowing tongue twisting rhymes just as fast as some of the material on E & A (2004). MF Doom also had one of the longer sets, since he has some mad rhyme spitting talent. I wish they would have shown more of the Brother Ali set, since he only gets one song.

The other side of the DVD has a ton of great stuff. B-Boy battles, DJ Battles, MC battles, beatbox battles and a graffiti expose. This is my first experience with all these things, except for the DJ battle section. It's amazing that these guys can think up these slams at the drop of a hat. It is definitely the height of slit-second presentation.

If you are into underground hip-hop, this DVD is essential watching. Make all of your idiot pop-rap friends watch it, just so they know that Eminem isn't the best rapper out there (by a long shot). Scribble Jam Magazine tags this DVD as "THE MOST COMPLETE COVERAGE OF ANY SCRIBBLE JAM EVER!" And after all my research, I can say that that is correct.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have For the Underground Hiphop Head.......2004-06-26

Yeah, I said it.

First, this is a 3 hour long, double-sided DVD.
It is footage of the 2003 7th Annual Hiphop festival (held by Scribble Magazine)- Scribble Jam.

This DVD has interviews and performances from artist like:
MF Doom, Brother Ali, Eyedea and Abilities, and a lot of the members from the Rhymesayers record label (including Atmosphere).

There also are: MC, DJ, B-Boy, and beatbox battles.

I highly recommend this DVD.
Worth the investment.
