After her MGM film career was derailed by personal problems, Judy Garland revived her career on the small screen and on the concert stage, as evidenced in the four-DVD Judy Garland Collection. In the one-hour 1962 TV special Judy, Frank, and Dean, Garland is in fine voice, belting out signature tunes like "When You're Smiling" and "The Man That Got Away." Rat Packers Sinatra and Martin are at their unctuous best, with Sinatra at one point casually flicking ash from his cigarette right onto the stage while singing an emotional "I See Your Face Before Me." The patter is a bit stiff, but the numbers are all showstoppers, and Garland, especially, is belting in her most over-the-top Carnegie Hall tradition. She also shares the stage with two costars, Robert Goulet and Phil Silvers, in a 1963 TV special. Garland's performances are forceful and confident, but, unfortunately, she gets little time to sing by herself; that would come later on her own TV show. She and Goulet sing a love medley that includes five complete songs, and there's also a bizarre sequence in which the trio changes costumes after every song; at one point they warble "If I Had a Hammer" while dressed as beatniks.

The novelty of Judy Garland: Live at the London Palladium is the spectacle of the great entertainer sharing the stage with her up-and-coming daughter. In November 1964 Liza Minnelli was not yet 20 and still pretty raw, and Garland seems alternately proud of and bemused by her, but fans of this brand of showbiz razzmatazz will be satisfied with the duets (especially trading verses on a medley of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Get Happy"). Garland opens the show with the reliable chest sweller "Once in a Lifetime" and delivers a tutorial in song dynamics with "The Man That Got Away." She appears rather shrunken and tired but still comes on like a trouper, fending off the audience's constant heckling for "Over the Rainbow" (as though she might forget it?) before finally handing the song back to them as a touching sing-along.

Garland's "second career" is summed up in Judy Garland: The Concert Years, a 1985 documentary narrated by her "other" daughter, Lorna Luft. The 85-minute retrospective collects comments from family and colleagues and shows clips from concerts at the London Palladium, Carnegie Hall, and the Palace Theater; a 30-second scene cut from her famous comeback film, A Star Is Born; and scenes from her short-lived TV show. There are also a number of complete performances, including a duet with Barbra Streisand of "Get Happy" and "Happy Days Are Here Again," her dramatically charged rendition of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" following JFK's death, "Ol' Man River," and "The Man That Got Away." And of course "Over the Rainbow" is here, in a 1955 performance that is the only TV recording of how she performed the song in concert: sitting on the edge of the stage, face to face with the audience. And it's a credit to Garland that even in hobo makeup, she lets the raw emotion of the song pour through.

5 out of 5 stars About Time.......2007-07-03

I too, have been waiting a long time for this. FYI, for the first reviewer, "Texas Refugee", you did a nice job with your review, but Judy and Mickey's first picture was "Love Finds Andy Hardy". I also second the reviewer who asks that the Hardy films need to be on DVD. Judy was only the best triple threat (dance, sing, act) in the history of the universe. Damn shame her mother got her hooked on pills

5 out of 5 stars HURRAY......... BUT BOO TOO! WE'RE STILL MISSING 4 MICKEY/JUDY MOVIES!!!!.......2007-06-19

It's great that they're releasing the 4 Mickey/Judy "majors", but why not release the 4 lesser known ones too in this same set: (1)Throughbreds Don't Cry in 1937 was the first time Mickey and Judy appeared together on screen. (2&3)The 2 Andy Hardy movies: Andy Hardy Meets Debutante (1940) and Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941). Their earliest Andy Hardy pairing, Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938) has previously been released on DVD. (4)Also both are in, but not paired together, in Thousands Cheer (1943) MGM's wartime musical with many of their contract players appearing as themselves. Their last pairing, Words and Music (1948), is being released on July 24 as part of the Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory, Vol. 2 box set.

    4 out of 5 stars Family Fun.......2007-06-25

I don't typically go in for these fifty movie sets because most times you may get a couple good movies and the rest are so-so. This set offers at least a half dozen good movies that sold for at least five or more dollars and you may still see some of them sold independently. In addition you have some good Three Stooges thrown in as well. This is one of the few fifty movie sets I recommend.

They've done it again. Great value for the money. And while several of the "50 Movies" are short subjects, I'd recommend this pack to anyone who likes good, wholesome, old fashion entertainment. You can't go wrong!!

5 out of 5 stars No blockbusters here.......2007-06-30

While the most celebrated musicals have been left out of this large collection, what remains is still worthwhile. The experience of watching these is a travel back in time, to a somewhat more innocent era of film making. True, there was the Depression, Prohibition, World War II, etc., which were not innocent at all, but the musicals that depicted them were.

In fact, there are moments that are almost magical in these films, such as in the one about the Dorsey brothers. And the quality of the transfers to DVD is acceptable if not perfect. This boxed set is a real find.

3 out of 5 stars Those were the days.......2007-05-08

This is a very good compilation of some of the geat old time musicals and worth every cent of the money I paid, I suuggest old timers like me to buy this box set from Amazon to bring the great memories of our young days. John Fenech Malta

3 out of 5 stars An inexpensive way to go panning for musical gold.......2007-04-21

I own three of the 50 classic movie packs so far - horror, comedy, and my latest purchase, this 50 musicals pack. I really liked the horror and comedy packs, but I felt like I had to go panning for gold in this pack more than the other two. The movies can be broken down into four basic categories, and depending on how you feel about them, you may or may not consider this a worthwhile purchase.

    1. Early talkie pre-code musicals and pseudo-musicals. These include "Glorifying the American Girl", "Dixiana", "The Great Gabbo", "Palooka", "Reaching for the Moon", "Check and Double Check", and "King Kelly of the USA". Because these movies were made in the era of 1929 - 1934, you have to deal with the problems of early sound era cinematography and some crackling in the audio. However, if you are a big film history buff like myself, this collection is a cost-effective way to view and own these rarely seen films. Realize that "Glorifying the American Girl" and "The Great Gabbo" do not include the Technicolor sequences that were originally filmed for them - both movies are entirely in Black and White.

    2. Great movies that inexplicably are in the public domain. The movies in this category include "Royal Wedding" with Fred Astaire, "Till the Clouds Roll By" with Judy Garland, "Swing Hostess" and "Stage Door Canteen" with a variety of stars. Of course, your version of "great movies" will vary according to taste.

    3. Good to poor movies that are in the public domain. This is the largest class of movies in the group. The better ones include "Hi Diddle Diddle" starring Adolphe Menjou that is more of a comedy than anything and is obviously targeted at a World War II audience. I also enjoyed "Calendar Girl" which had some pretty good music and OK performances. "Black Tights" with Maurice Chevalier and Cyd Charisse has some great dancing in it, but the video transfer is truly awful, and "Second Chorus" is a film that has Fred Astaire playing a collegiate trumpet player of all things and is quite enjoyable but certainly not in the league with Astaire's top films. Of course, in this category, you must also tolerate the "dross with the divine". The worst movies in this category are "Wild Guitar" which I would just recommend because it has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen, and it isn't even that old compared to the others in this pack. Made in 1962, it is obviously supposed to be a copy of Elvis Presley's story. However, the star of this film - Arch Hall, Jr. - is no Elvis in either the acting, singing, or looks department. "Road Show" is pure punishment to sit through. Adolphe Menjou, who can usually make any picture better, cannot save this 70 minute long slapstick parade that gets tiresome after 20 minutes. Last but not least, is "The Dancing Pirate", which is so bad it is good. It involves an 1830's Boston dance instructor who is kidnapped by pirates, escapes in California, and winds up giving dancing lessons to the then all-Hispanic residents of that territory. It is as campy as it sounds, and actually fun in places.

    4. African-American musicals from the 30's through the 50's made by long defunct companies. Besides the early-talkie musicals and films, this is the other reason to own this collection. Although some stereotypes can be found in these productions, they largely portray African-Americans as normal and dignified individuals decades before the civil rights era began to bear any fruit in popular culture. Most of the plots are very thin and are just there to hold together the musical performances - and what performances they are! The performers include Nat King Cole, Cab Calloway, Lena Horne, Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, as well as some acts I had never heard of that perform some great rhythm and blues numbers. These films include "Duke is Tops", "Reet, Petite and Gone", "Killer Diller", and "Paradise in Harlem" among many others. To enjoy these films you will have to tolerate the rather cheap looking sets probably due to the rock-bottom budgets these film gems had to endure in order to get produced in the first place.

If you are a fan of the off-beat musicals made from the 1930's through the 1950's as I am and aren't afraid of tolerating the video defects that come with the territory in these old public domain films, I would recommend this set.

    5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong!.......2007-04-14

Hey, 50 shows for under $20.00, how could you go wrong? You'd expect to pay five bucks a copy for some of these movies, so even if you don't like them all, you're ahead if you enjoy a few. I won't list the shows, the other reviewers have already done that, but don't hesitate to buy this set if you like the older shows!

    3 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection rates : 5.8.......2007-04-04

MUSICALS CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK is a fine and varied collection of second-tier song-filled Hollywood productions, primarily from the 1940s. The special appeal of this set is the sheer volume of mostly forgotten musicals offered for exploration to all fans of this genre. A definite find!
    .

Forty-eight titles in this collection were graded on a 1 to 10 scale by users of a website devoted to film data. The averaged out rating for these movies is: 5.8.

Broadway to Hollywood: The Classic Musicals Collection is a five-film set of fondly remembered, mostly MGM musicals: Easter Parade (1948), The Band Wagon (1953), Bells Are Ringing (1960), Finian's Rainbow (Warner, 1968), and Brigadoon (1954). Four of the films are making their DVD debut, all are available separately (for a higher price), and the two best films, Easter Parade and The Band Wagon, come in two-disc special editions complete with commentary tracks, new and vintage documentaries, and musical outtakes. Both of those films star Fred Astaire following his return from premature retirement. Easter Parade is a Pygmalion-like tale of a Vaudeville veteran (Astaire) who attempts to develop an act with a small-timer (Judy Garland) after his partner (Ann Miller) leaves him. Favorite songs include the title tune, "Steppin' Out with My Baby," and "We're a Couple of Swells." The Band Wagon was a sort of career retrospective for Astaire, as he plays an aging film star trying to resurrect his career by returning to the Broadway stage. Costars include Cyd Charisse, Jack Buchanan, Oscar Levant, and Nanette Fabray, and favorite numbers include "Dancing in the Dark," "By Myself," "Triplets," and "A Shine on Your Shoes."

Bells Are Ringing is a charmingly dated Vincente Minnelli film starring Judy Holliday, in a reprise of her Tony-winning Broadway role as an employee at an answering service who finds herself falling for a client (Dean Martin). Favorite songs include "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over." Finian's Rainbow is a bloated oddity directed by a young Francis Ford Coppola and starring Astaire as a leprechaun and '60s pop icon Petula Clark as his daughter. It does have some great songs, however, including "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love," and "Old Devil Moon." Brigadoon has been out on DVD twice before, but appears now in its best version yet, remastered, anamorphically enhanced, and with musical outtakes. It stars Gene Kelly and Van Johnson as Americans who stumble across a Scottish village that only appears on Earth one day every 100 years, which is a problem when Kelly falls in love with one of its residents (Cyd Charisse). Favorite songs include "Almost Like Being in Love," "The Heather on the Hill," and "I'll Go Home with Bonnie Jean."

While none of the films in the Broadway to Hollywood collection are absolutely top-tier MGM (and Astaire, Garland, and Kelly all made better films in their careers), all have their charms and are welcome additions to the DVD catalog. Trivia note: The title of the set isn't 100% correct. Easter Parade did not originate as a Broadway musical, but Tommy Tune made an unsuccessful attempt to adapt the movie into a Broadway show in the late 1990s. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars brigadoon is short-changed.......2007-06-24

This set was given to me a few months ago. My personal interest is in Brigadoon. Cyd and Hugh are probably the greatest dancers to ever crossover (and Mr Kelly doesn't count since he was never really on the other side). What angers me about the transfer of the film version to dvd is that it was edited. DVD transfer is an opportunity to realize a film's full life. The version of Brigadoon in this collection is clearly formatted for some kind of commercial-tv presentation. The beautiful and crucial number "Come to Me Bend to Me" is formatted as an outtake, as if there wasn't time for it in the tv format. I remember when the film was released in 1964. All of us in the production had a sense that this was a show that could delight and move people who would never see a stage production. I cannot fathom why the people that gained the rights to the dvd transfer did nothing more than dump a tv-commercial-edited version onto a piggy-back of a multi-dvd set--they don't know the show, or don't give a damn

5 out of 5 stars Five of the Best Color Musicals Ever Made.......2006-03-28

BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD is Warner Home Video's blanket title for five of the splashiest and most tuneful color MGM musicals ever made: THE BANDWAGON, EASTER PARADE, BRIGADOON, BELLS ARE RINGING, and FINIAN'S RAINBOW.

Two of these are sleeper gems. Vincente Minnelli's BRIGADOON (1954), with an army of musical numbers by Lerner and Loewe, has travelers Gene Kelly and Van Johnson coming upon a Scottish village that can only be seen once every hundred years; Cyd Charisse is the lovely leading lady. The movie has been criticized for its sound stage re-creation of a Scottish village, but that is a plus for me. Along with CinemaScope, one gets the feel for what this show was like on Broadway. A dozen songs, choreographed by Kelly, include "The Heather on the Hill" and "It's Almost Like Being in Love." BRIGADOON is a lovely movie, with remastered color and sound. Bonuses include three outtake musical numbers and several original theatrical trailers.

Francis Ford Coppola does brand-new audio commentary on his own fabulous FINIAN'S RAINBOW (1968), in Technicolor and letterboxed Panavision. Again, we are mostly on a soundstage, with Fred Astaire and Tommy Steele as leprechauns and Petula Clark at her loveliest as Astaire's daughter. This E.Y. Harburg-Fred Saidy-Burton Lane musical has songs I cannot get out of my head weeks later, including "Look to the Rainbow,""That Old Devil Moon," "How Are Things In Glocca Mora?" and Steele's show-stopper: "If I'm Not With the Girl I Love, I'll Love the Girl I Am With." The movie is glorious and very underrated, from a late 1960's era of underrated movie musicals, including STAR! and HELLO, DOLLY!

BELLS ARE RINGING.(1960), with Vincente Minnelli directing a delightful Betty Comden-Adolph Green screenplay, with Jule Styne music, is a great musical vehicle for wonderful Judy Holliday, re-creating a Tony winning stage role. She is a switchboard operator named Melasande at Susanswerphone in a lower-depths part of Manhattan. She is not supposed to get personally involved with the clients, but as "Mom" falls in love with songwriter Dean Martin. She also does not know that bookie Eddie Foy, Jr. is using the answering service as a gambling front. Terrific songs here include the legendary "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over". DVD bonuses, in addition to remastered color and sound, include outtake musical numbers and a filmmaking documentary. You also get to see a CinemaScope movie at its right aspect ratio.

The two crown jewels of the BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD set are double disks of Charles Walters' EASTER PARADE (1948) and Vincente Minnelli's THE BANDWAGON (1953). Both have magnificently remastered sound and picture to look and sound brand new. EASTER PARADE has about fifteen old and new Irving Berlin songs, performed by the incomparable Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. Its magnificent bonuses include the finest Garland documentary, two full hours from PBS, that I have ever seen; a filmmaking documentary; and audio commentary by Astaire's daughter Ava and Garland biographer John Fricke. This is an all-time favorite musical of mine, and I have never enjoyed it more.

Last and probably best (which is saying a lot!) is THE BANDWAGON (1953), which several movie musical experts feel is the best movie musical of all time. It is certainly one of the most sophisticated and stylish color ones, with a wonderful Oscar-nominated Comden and Green screenplay about putting on a Broadway show. Astaire stars this time with lovely Cyd Charisse, never better than in "Dancing in the Dark." Other hit songs include "By Myself," "Shine on My Shoes." "Triplets," "Louisiana Hayride," the gorgeously-designed Mickey Spillane climax, and "That's Entertainment!" Comden and Green have a delightful time spoofing themselves as the Nanette Fabray and Oscar Levant characters. The biggest bonus here is audio commentary by a very happy and friendly Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein, along with a filmmaking documentary and an hour-long "Men Who Made the Movies" documentary on Vincente Minnelli.

If you'd like to own this DVD boxed set, BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD, it retails for about $60, but sells from Amazon for about $45, less than an orchestra ticket for a downtown San Francisco stage show. Happy viewing!

2 out of 5 stars Not the best musicals.......2005-05-22

Theses are not the best examples of the Hollywood musical. While I love Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, there a much better films with Fred or Gene.

Easter Parade has the two best musical stars, Fred and Judy, but together they have no chemistry and are further hampered by a weak script.

Finian's Rainbow is Fred's last musical and what a poor choice. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, he went on to much better fare. This was a groundbreaking musical but does not translate well to the large screen.

Brigadoon is for Gene Kelly super fans only. Kelly is great but this is not one of Lerner and Lowe's better efforts (Think Gigi and My Fair Lady).

There are only 2 great films.

The Band Wagon is Fred at his best. This is classic camp. A show within a show. Fred, Nannette Fabray and Oscar Levant are making a musical version of Faust that turns into a big egg. But they quickly take all the good pieces and rework it to a smash. Sounds familiar but it is original. Most people remember this for the Tripplet's Song.

Bells are Ringing is Judy Holiday at her best. She conquered Broadway with this show and then proved herself again with this film. Dean Martin is her costar and features Jean Stapleton.

Of course both are Comden and Green shows, which of course helps. My suggestion is buy the titles you like seperately.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, WB!.......2005-03-31

The wonderful folks at Warner Home Video have outdone themselves recently with several amazing boxed sets of great films. We now have definitive batches of the best of Film Noir, Classic Comedy, Gangster Films--and this beauty, my favorite so far. The sheer brilliance of the technical work that went into restoring these classic musicals is reason enough to pounce on Amazon's bargain price while it lasts.

What can you say about the films themselves that hasn't already been said? THE BAND WAGON is the crown jewel here, of course, but the others are excellent. EASTER PARADE is terrific. BELLS ARE RINGING, though not the strongest story or score around, has B'way legend (and Oscar-winner) Judy Holliday in her final star vehicle. And BRIGADOON has all that dancing in the heather, not to mention the stunning score of Lerner & Loewe.

For me, the most pleasant surprise in the box is FINIAN'S RAINBOW. I'm familiar with all the other titles here, but I'd never really looked at this one all the way through before, and it's visually impressive and surprisingly charming. Astaire, Petula Clark, Tommy Steele, Don Francks, and an energetic supporting cast of singer/dancers do wonders with the dated story and timeless score. And young Francis Ford Coppola had some fresh and interesting visual ideas (montage, cross-cutting, swooping aerial shots, etc.) to keep it all humming along. Coppola is unnecessarily self-effacing throughout his commentary track--he has no reason to apologize. With its restored widescreen picture and 5.1 stereo soundtrack, this film is really quite beautiful.

All in all, this is yet another must-have collection for all serious film buffs. Thanks again, Warner Home Video!

5 out of 5 stars A SUBLIME COLLECTION OF GREAT MUSICALS!.......2005-03-16

Warner has been doing a magnificent job of using the latest picture resolution process to restore and/or polish up their best movies; and again they do not disappoint! Warner Home Video truly hits a home run and does the incredible with this boxed set of five of the greatest musicals of all time! The set is well presented with excellent digital transfer, wonderful sound and a bevy of sublime extras.

The Band Wagon (which itself is a two DVD special edition) stars Fred Astaire as an older entertainer trying to be successful again in show business. Things do not go well: he doesn't like the director; there aren't fancy dance scenes that he prefers to perform and he has to dance with a ballerina! The show is unpopular and Fred's character Tony Hunter saves the day using his superior technique and know-how. The extras are wonderful! Liza Minnelli (whose Dad, Vincente Minnelli, did an excellent job as director of the picture) and Michael Feinstein provide an engaging commentary. There are also two documentaries: "Get Aboard! The Band Wagon" about the making of the movie and an older expose entitled "The Men Who Made the Movies: Vincente Minnelli." You won't regret these-they are excellent and very informative! SMILE There's also the outtake musical number of Two Faced Women. Very good! For Astaire fans there's an Astaire trailer collection and even a musical short of Jack Buchanan with the Glee Quartet. I was particularly pleased with the fine commentary Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein give here.

The other two disc special edition is of the MGM classic Easter Parade. Wow! This has always been one of my very favorite musicals. The acting and the chemistry between Astaire playing the professional dancer and Judy Garland playing Hannah Brown his at first unlikely dance partner-and eventually romantic partner-is nothing short of excellent and captivating! Ann Miller turns in a great performance as the dancer who leaves Fred's character to try to get even further ahead in her career. The digital quality of the video and the sound are both excellent. There's a documentary of the making of this movie and a particular favorite of mine is the American Masters documentary profile: "Judy Garland: By Myself" put out only with the essential effort of my friend John Fricke. (The American Masters documentary won more than just one Emmy, making this a particularly valuable extra! John won one of the Emmys for this; he is the leading Garland biographer who wrote several books on Judy.) John worked so hard on this profile! John's fine commentary along with Ava Astaire (Fred Astaire's daughter) proves to be an excellent resource for reliable information about this film and Judy. You also get the outtake musical number "Mr. Monotony." There's a Judy Garland trailer collection and some promotions for the original film are provided. Wow! A fine two disc set in and of itself.

Bells Are Ringing is Judy Holliday's last performance; she plays a worker at a telephone answering service who gets overly involved with her client's personal lives. Jean Stapleton, a favorite actress of mine (from All In The Family as Edith) is in this picture as well. This picture was nominated for an Oscar for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture and the song "Just In Time" is certainly one good reason why! Outtake musical numbers include "Is It a Crime?" and "My Guiding Star." The digital transfer is again excellent and the sound quality is excellent. This is definitely a classic musical.

Brigadoon boasts a wonderful musical score by Lerner and Lowe. The principle cast is only the best: Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse. An adventurous American suddenly uncovers a magical Scottish town which is only visible one day a century! Does he stay there and perhaps experience a fine true love; or should he return to his life as it is? Quite the dilemma! There are three musical outtakes you want to look at: "Come to Me Bend to Me," "From This Day On," and "Sword Dance." An audio outtake and a brand new digital transfer make this a fine addition to the box set as well as your DVD collection.

Last, but certainly not least, is Finian's Rainbow. A wonderful fanciful musical, this film stars Fred Astaire in his final full length performance as Finian McLonergan. Somehow Finian steals a pot of gold from Og the leprechaun. Finian and his daughter Sharon (the lovely Petula Clark) go to America (as does Og) and use their powers to overcome a rather prejudiced senator. Not only are the musical numbers excellent; the cinematography is superlative and the ending is a happy one! There is an excellent commentary by director Francis Ford Coppola and a cute feature on the film's premiere.

All in all, this is clearly one of the best boxed sets of supremely fine great musicals and it is very reasonably priced. For me personally this set was an easy decision-it is already in my personal DVD collection! I highly recommend this boxed set for fans of the great American musicals as well as all patrons of the arts. This is also a solid introduction to some of the quality musicals produced on film to date. Equally important, the hard work and effort everyone put into the seemingly countless extras is superlative.

5 out of 5 stars The really really big sheww.......2006-06-12

Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands and told us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'
Ed would begin that way introducing the celebrities and warming us for Toppo Gigio the Little Italian Mouse or for , a young man from Memphis , Tennessee ( Ed could hardly hide the distaste as he pronounced the words ) Elvis Presley. "
The video contains records of some of the highlight performances, and also an interview with Ed and his wife Sylvia.
Highlights are wonderful, but my sense is that putting together a package in which the complete shows as they came on at the time would give a dimension no excerpts can.

Some of Judy's finest works in great form. "A Star is Born" and "Wizard of Oz" would justify the price by themselves. The rest is great gravy.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good view of her talent.......2004-06-29

Judy was a magnificent talent with personal problems that makes it amazing that she could produce such beutiful prductions. These movies are a very good cross section of her talent. The Andy Hardy series was a wonderful joining of two great talents that represent a part of her career that many have been the happiest. There are many others that could have been chosen, but whatever was put in would require taking something out. I think "The Wizard" was the one waste, since there are much better copies out, and another Judy and Mickey would have been more fun.
But at least these are great, and others can be bought.

4 out of 5 stars Great Shows, Cumbersome Package.......2006-12-01

I'd give this set five stars if it had been packaged properly. There's no need to waste words here about how terrific these historical TV shows are, and I appreciate the efforts that went into making the entire series available in such stunning transfers on DVD. However, now that all of the shows have been restored, they ought to reconfigure this set (as has already been done with volume one of the complete collection). As cute an idea as the "trunk" package may seem, it is unwieldy and redundant in its contents. As at least one disc in the set demonstrates, four full episodes can easily be put on a single two-sided disc. So why is this set bulging with seven discs? Two discs contain three episodes each; another contains two; and another disc contains only one episode (The Christmas show). Even more wasteful, one disc is devoted to highlights of Judy with famous guests, and another contains a mere 17 minutes of music--four "Songs for America" culled from various shows. If a person is collecting the entire series (and you wouldn't be buying this package if you weren't), there is no need for separate "highlights" discs. Let's hope they get around to putting these legendary programs in a sensible format as they already have for volume 1, which originally also came in the bulky "trunk" format. Serious collectors, which such sets are obviously aimed at, don't have extra shelf space to waste on useless "extras."

Yes I do... I had to buy it twice so that I have it in the house as well. JUDY GARLAND 1962-1964 is the best Judy ..... Need I say more???? She remains a working experience.... she is true.... her soul is true.... her vulrability is true...

The human soul never changes... and that`s why JUDY GARLAND always will find fans worldwide.... I saw Liza live on October 19 2005 in Oslo. She was magnificent and we met briefly after the show... You can see a photo of us in my profile... How proud you would have been of her Judy.....

Bless you Judy... You gave us your talent AND a God-gifted daughter. THANK YOU:-)

    5 out of 5 stars A GARLAND FAN BONZANA~AWESOME PERFORMANCES!!! .......2005-09-20

In 1962 the greatest musical introduction happened in my life when my loving older sis sat me down and played Judy At Carnegie Hall and life was not quite the same after...1963 came this great legend on television every Sunday night and I instantly fell in love and never missed a show and on Monday morning in High School Choir the first topic of discussion was always about Judy's tremendous and gorgeous voice, the songs that Judy sang the night before and who she did those incredible duets with which was a spectacular array of the whose who in the great musical world of the sixties such as Tony Bennett, Count Basie, Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Vic Damone, Jack Jones and on and on! I remember being awe struck as a teen watching this dynamo every Sunday night and being thrilled beyond belief...1965 opening night in the front row (I have the program and ticket stub to prove it!) at the Greek Theatre was sublime and this remains the greatest to this day that I have ever experienced and I have seen most of the greats over the past forty years. Anyone who experiences this wonderous box set will see what I mean as this is the closest that we can now get to the genius that was Judy Garland the Live Concert performer...and this set captures this brilliantly!!! Never in my lifetime did I think that I would have all the episodes of this incomparable series all beautifully remastered with such loving care but this second box set now completes this legendary series in the grand fashion that this classic musical series and this grand legend deserves. Glorious outtakes and stunning masterful unused performances fill out this collection and it is amazing to watch the incredibly moving series finale "Here's To Us" and realize that this amazing performance was not used...one watches transfixed as this soulful wonder goes to emotional depths unreached by other singers...this extraordinary performance is stunning beyond belief and quite possibly the greatest performance ever captured on film by any singer...certainly the most deeply moving. Aretha Franklin rates Judy as one of the greatest soul singers ever and watching this performance makes one know that Aretha knows what she is talking about. Judy Garland had a spectacular natural voice and was the greatest female popular singer plus peerless performer ever and this beautifully crafted box set clearly demonstrates this and is the next best thing to what it was like to experience Judy In Concert...there are a number of Concert Special Shows between these two magnificent box sets and they are the ultimate! Thank you Judy for working so hard and leaving us these two wonderous treasure chests of the best there is in the world of entertainment to savor and enjoy over and over again we do miss you alot...for always.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Entertainer In Her Many Moods.......2005-06-11

I must begin by saying that my love affair with Judy began, as it was the case with so many kids, with the annual showing of The Wizard of Oz. Thereafter, I'd catch her old movies on TV, frequently sneaking in a late show of Little Nellie Kelly or Presenting Lily Mars, or whatever, it was a wonderful treat for a little boy in one of the less fashionable parts of New Yawk. Judy lifted me, transported me into a better world, if only temporarily. I loved her voice, her style, her vulnerability. Now Streisand is a great talent, but vulnerable she ain't! Having said that, I must report that Judy is not at the top of her singing form in The Judy Garland Show, meticulously cleaned and sharpened in both picture and sound, after years in careless storage. When, then, was Judy in peak vocal power in her long musical career? The answer is her Carnegie Hall period. Unfortunately, she wasn't much to look at then, having packed on plenty of pounds with her favorite foods, particularly mashed potatoes and chocolate pies, plus wine. But it was this extra weight that protected her from the effects of her prescription drug addiction and nicotine habit. There was a certain sound between 1961 and 1962, when she was managed by her new lover, CMA's David Begelman, that she had not uttered before or afterward. It was rich, clear and under total control. It is in great evidence in her special with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, originally titled The Judy Garland Show, but now often marketed on DVD as "Judy, Frank and Dean, Once in a Lifetime."
That lovely, exciting and rich voice is rarely in evidence on her series, but occasionally pops up in duets when she is competitive (with Streisand, Vic Damone, Ethel Merman) and in some solos (As Long as He Needs Me), but her startling weight loss, which lends itself to the high fashion of Ray Aghayan, was murder on her voice. Some may want to chop off my head, but I speaketh the truth: a steady diet of tea, Newport cigarettes and Ritalin do not promote good singing. There, I said it. Given that, she did the best she could with that diminished ability but still was a consummate comedienne, and a surprisingly lithe, limber dancer. There was a lot of backstage politicking at the time about second-rate guests being on the show, but there were plenty of first-rate talents, too, making a lovely time capsule of that period, the early '60s. I highly recommend the DVD set as an historical account of Judy and her special place in show business, and, in case anyone didn't know what all the fuss was about.

5 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold.......2004-07-15

There really are no words to express the genius of Judy Garland. With all of her emotional and financial problems (not to mention the horrible treatment she got from CBS), this supposedly "unreliable" woman sang her heart out week after week in what is indisputably the best musical series in the history of television. Every single show was like a special event. The shows produced by Bill Colleran are of course the best, because the "comedy sidekick" format was finally dropped and the focus was purely on the music. The 2 boxed sets, taken in their entirety, are an absolute must for any Garland fan. Most interesting to me were the out-takes (which show no indication of a temperamental, intoxicated diva), and the audio commentaries. Too bad there's no commentary from any of Judy's children, but I highly recommend the DVD of "Me and My Shadows: Life with Judy Garland" produced by Lorna Luft - she gives an excellent audio commentary on that DVD. Major Kudos to Pioneer Entertainment for a superb job on these 2 boxed sets - they are timeless treasures, and have gone a long way to satisfying my insatiable appetite for all things Garland.

Destined to remain the single most comprehensive record of Judy Garland's latter-day career, The Judy Garland Show Collection is an astonishing treasure of great lasting value. Preserving 14 complete episodes from Garland's rarely seen CBS-TV variety show from 1963-64, the set also offers a wealth of excerpts, outtakes, performances, and supplements packed onto all 8 sides of four DVDs. Of course Garland's established fans must have this set, which is handsomely boxed in a miniature show-biz trunk (to honor Judy's signature stage prop), and includes a paperback edition of Coyne Steven Sanders's definitive book about the show's one-season glory. Better still is the value this boxed set has for those who are unaware of Judy Garland's amazing talent beyond The Wizard of Oz. For anyone with only a cursory awareness of Garland's skill as an interpreter of great songs, this box will be a dynamic revelation.

Here, after all, is a mature performer at the peak of her song-styling craft, and The Judy Garland Show Collection gathers many of her finest performances. Side One of Disc One is "Just Judy"--28 songs that demonstrate Judy's amazing range and her penchant for melancholy, introspective tunes of loneliness and sorrow, brilliantly combined with such trademark showstoppers as "When You're Smiling" and "Keep Your Sunny Side Up." Elsewhere in the set, Judy shares the stage with such luminaries as Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Mickey Rooney, and many others, including her 17-year-old daughter Liza Minnelli, who was then on the cusp of her own stardom.

This was not the most stable time in Judy Garland's life, and she makes mistakes here and there--a show-biz great who'd falter occasionally, only to recover in grand style. But what's most evident is the sheer power of Judy Garland's talent, showcased by the finest musical and backstage talent that TV had to offer (including director Norman Jewison prior to his move to feature films). Watching this 15-hour compilation is a joyous reminder that a TV variety show, in the right hands, was the premier source of mainstream American entertainment. The Judy Garland Show had to struggle for ratings (it competed in the same time slot as NBC's popular series Bonanza), but this boxed set restores its timeless value. Pioneer has done a superlative job in presenting what is certainly one of the most impressive DVD packages ever produced. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Judy Garland Show.......2007-05-18

If you love Judy Garland and it has been since you were very young, like I was, since you have seen these shows, this is a must have see. To see such a great talent at her best is a trip back in time, well worth taking again and again.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-04-04

Others here have written beautifully about this treasure, so I'll just add that this is the first DVD that I ever purchased, on the same day that I bought my first DVD player, and that this collection was the only reason I bought a DVD player to begin with. It also was the first time I'd seen Judy Garland's 1963-64 TV series, and the first (of now many times) that I have read and referred to the really excellent and informative paperback book 'Rainbows End' written by Coyne Sanders which comes in this awesome DVD package.
Some 200 DVDs later in my collection, I'm happy that this is the one that got me started with collecting DVDs in the first place. I wish more box sets would include books and supplemental material so richly provided with this box set. It belongs in the home of every fan of Judy Garland and the guest performances are to behold- because of this show, I was introduced to Peggy Lee, Martha Raye, Vic Damone and other excellent musical talents I'd heard of, but basically had never seen perform.
    It's a must-have :)

    5 out of 5 stars Garland's Greatest Filmed Performance.......2006-11-23

My understanding of this program before I saw it was that it was a "failure," and should be seen only by unlimited Judy Garland fans. But when I finally saw it I saw a side of her I never realized. Here she is not artistically fettered by MGM, and more importantly this show is the main source of Judy's concert style of performance. People whose impression of Judy Garland is drawn from "For Me and My Gal" or "The Harvey Girls" may wonder why by the 1950's she was called Miss Show Business. This show gives us a glimpse.

It is far from perfect. It lacks structure, it meanders in poorly written jokes, and there are technical goofs galore (many which Garland capitalized upon with excellent timing to get a laugh out of the audience - especially involving cue cards). But where else in the world will you see Barbara Streisand, Judy Garland, and Ethel Merman all singing together? It's not just the star power, but the actual performances themselves that will hold your attention and keep you thinking of them long after Jerry Van Dyke's comedy will be forgotten.

Judy had the burden of being a bigger legend than her guests, and dealt with it by being the central performer on the show. She sang, danced, and even did impersonations in a sketch with Jack Carter. I can't possibly tell if the emotions she puts in her songs are real or not, but what counts is that they -seem- real. More than any other performer, she broke hearts when she sang. Perhaps it's because she is seen by viewers who know how much of a tragedy her life was. I don't know. But these performances are greater than anything that will be seen in Judy's movies, even "A Star is Born," which may be the most profuse display of her talents on film. It's not enough to listen to a Judy Garland album -- she must be seen as well to be fully appreciated, and this collection is the best way to do that. She really was the World's Greatest Entertainer.

5 out of 5 stars We have Lift Off.......2006-02-27

Just wait until you see Judy sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic for the first time in the show. Her talent is supernatural. What else can I say. I have so far only bought the first box set and will soon buy the next. I wish that the shows could be packaged in complete running order. I would be prepared to buy the ones that I have already purchased again. Pure Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Garland Collection!.......2006-02-20

I am awestruck by this incredible collection. I wish more people could see this and know how great a performer Judy was(and still is in my opinion). The sound and visual are unbelievably mesmerizing! I've turned on others to the show who aren't devoted fans, as I am, and they are impressed to no end! If only they could have given the great Garland more seasons! You just love her all over again!
As a small child, I remember watching this show with the entire family. It was great then, but not like this! Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars 4-Disc Set Captures The Legend That Was (And Still Is) Judy!.......2004-05-25

"The Judy Garland Collection" (marketed by "Kultur Video") is a 4-Pack DVD set, with each disc featuring one program/concert starring the incomparable Judy Garland. Miss Garland can belt out a tune like no one else before or since. And she's in fine voice during these four programs featured in this boxed set.

The video quality on these discs certainly isn't going to win any prizes; but it's not TOO terribly bad either. Maybe a tad better than you'd find on a VHS tape. Obviously, no major re-mastering or restoration process was undertaken for these DVD transfers here. However, it's nevertheless still nice to be able to have these "Classic Judy" programs on Digital Disc.

Programs included in this collectible DVD set (all presented in their original Full-Frame TV ratio of 1.33:1) .................

    >> "Judy Garland: The Concert Years" (Color and B&W; 1 hr., 26 min.) --- This biography-like program, hosted by Judy's daughter Lorna Luft, presents many film clips of Judy "in action" on stage. Guest-star interviews also dot this touching tribute to Judy.

    >> "Judy Garland: LIVE At The London Palladium With Liza Minnelli" (B&W; 54 minutes) --- This is a great, great concert (one of my faves). It was filmed in November of 1964, with an 18-year-old Liza Minnelli (an up-and-coming star in her own right) holding her own with her famed mom on stage in London. You can really tell that mother and daughter are having a blast as they sing and dance together here. Unfortunately, picture quality for this program is not real good. But even though it lacks a sharp, detailed picture, this disc is nevertheless still a must-have for any collector of Miss Garland's concert material.

Judy and Liza's "curtain call" at the end of this fun-filled hour elicits a spine-tingling (and nearly deafening) roar of approval from the Palladium crowd that will very nearly bring a tear to your eye. This concert is pure "Magic" from start to wonderful finish.

NOTE: The actual title of this program (altered slightly for this DVD release) is: "Judy And Liza At The Palladium".

    >> "Judy, Frank And Dean: Once In A Lifetime" (Color; 51 minutes) --- I was kind of surprised to see this program presented in "color". The trio of legendary singers had never performed together before this "once in a lifetime" get-together, which aired on network TV on February 25, 1962. Judy looks a bit different here (her looks would often change during her career), but she sounds fantastic.

The color on this program is a tad dull. Evidently this show was originally shot in B&W; but was "colorized" for the video release. This is a darn good program, one that captured the fancy of many viewers during its original 1962 television airing -- so much so that it was nominated for FOUR Emmy Awards.

NOTE: Some interesting "Title Trivia" concerning this "Judy, Frank, and Dean" special -- The original title of this TV special was: "The Judy Garland Show" (not to be confused with Judy's other "series" with the very same title, which came a year later). Another alternate (home video) title for this concert program is: "Judy, Frank And Dean: The Legendary Concert". And this special had still *another* name as well before airing, being called "Miss Show Business" for a time before the moniker was changed to simply "The Judy Garland Show".

    >> "Judy Garland, Robert Goulet & Phil Silvers Special" (B&W; 51 minutes) --- This TV Special from early 1963, with Judy kicking up her heels on stage with Mr. Goulet and Mr. Silvers, was instrumental in launching Judy's very own CBS-TV series in the fall of '63 ("The Judy Garland Show") -- a series that was sadly way too short-lived, surviving just one season and spanning 26 memorable shows with Judy and her array of guest stars.

NOTE: This program's original title is: "Judy Garland And Her Guests, Phil Silvers And Robert Goulet".

Two of the discs have bonus programs attached. .... The famous "Gala Hollywood Movie Premiere" of Judy's 1954 film "A Star Is Born" is presented as an extra bonus on "The Concert Years" DVD. Watch as dozens of top movie stars of the era file past the TV cameras and into the "Pantages Theatre" for the debut of Judy's triumphal "comeback" motion picture on September 29, 1954. Judy herself makes an on-camera appearance near the end of this enthralling 31-minute star-laden program.

The other bonus (on the "Goulet/Silvers" disc) is a 26-minute segment from an episode of Judy's TV series, in which Ken Murray appears and shows many of his "Home Movies of the Movie Stars". Video quality for this bonus is a notch or two above what we find on the rest of these discs.

Each of these discs also contains some "text" extras -- "Biography" and "Filmography" sections spotlighting Judy Garland. (The text is the same throughout the set of DVDs. However, different pictures of Judy are used within each disc's text areas.)

I'm very pleased with the packaging for this DVD collection (although the outer slipcase is a bit flimsy -- but still adequate enough). Each single-sided disc gets its own Keep Case package, complete with a colorful "Chapter Selections" insert. I also feel the need to praise the impressive work done on the "disc art" here. The labels on these four discs literally glisten. The artwork on each disc is smooth-as-glass to the touch. Very nicely done! It looks "classy".

    -------------

Diminutive in physical stature (at a mere 4-feet, 11.5-inches), but certainly not short on talent by any sane person's yardstick, Judy Garland wowed audiences with her incredible voice (and underrated acting ability) for more than forty years. Taken from us at much, much too early an age (47) when she passed away in England on June 22, 1969, her legacy remains as strong as ever. And DVD compilations like this nice one will only aid in keeping our memories of her strong and vivid for many generations to come.

    5 out of 5 stars First-Rate Entertainment -- Third-Rate Video Transfer.......2003-07-22

All four of these DVDs are first-rate entertainment. The Judy Garland Collection is made up of three television specials and a documentary/retrospective hosted by daugther Lorna Luft. Luft, who is best-known for her performances in "Grease 2" and "Where The Boys Are '84" and as author of the book "Me And My Shadows", appeared on her mother's television series in 1963. Since the interview sequences of Joey Luft (Judy Garland's mostly-forgotten son) are brief and Liza, who has evidently completed her transformation into her own mother (scary, isn't it?), is busy with her bizarre come-back, it is Lorna who gets to display her talent, which she does with ease and professionalism (although she does look a bit frostbitten by the chilly weather). She makes the most of this opportunity to remind the public that she is Judy Garland's daughter, too. Little-seen film clips as well as some of Garland's showstoppers from her self-titled television show round out the clips.

Another disc has a television special where Judy was accompanied onstage by daughter Liza Minnelli. Liza proves she's a chip off her mother's yellow brick block, and surprises her mother more than a few times with her talent. One humorous moment has Judy mouthing something--a question--to someone off camera. Evidently she was told to move Liza's microphone closer to her mouth.

A third disc has a TV special costarring Robert Goulet and Phil Silvers. Who knew Phil Silvers could sing? There is some great singing in this show, and some of the jokes are hilarious.

The last disc is Garland's television performance with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Judy more than holds her own with these two powerhouse crooners, outsinging the two of them with one vocal chord tied behind her back.

The Lorna DVD has a very good quality image, the interviews being new and the old footage being mostly in top-notch condition. The other two shows (with Liza and Phil Silvers and Robert Goulet) are in pretty wretched shape. It's not the transfer to DVD, but rather the poor quality of the source material. The sound is okay, but just okay. What a shame these couldn't have received the same high quality restoration as the "Judy Garland Show" DVDs, but at least they are available and real fans of Judy shouldn't mind too much. It's the entertainment value on these four DVDs that make it worth the box-set price; the degraded video and sound aren't distracting enough to lessen the power of these incomparable performances. Judy Garland's legendary talent bumps what would have been a 1-star video treatment up to 5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2003-01-22

Historical perfomances are difficult to duplicate. I have the DVD version of this set and it is incredible. So the quality of the DVDs aren't the best, the quality of the performances are. I highly recommend this set to anyone who enjoys great performances, and the video and audio are not that bad.
