In 1985, Bo Diddley put together a band that included Ron Wood, John Mayall, Mick Fleetwood, Kenny Jones, Carmine Appice, John Lodge, Ronnie Lane, Carl Wilson, and members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Chicago, Quiet Riot, and Three Dog Night. He cooked them all a barbecue dinner, and then they put on a show. It's a 55-minute R&B jamfest. Chuck Berry shows up in the middle of this film for a number or two, but--despite the title--it's Bo's show. Behind-the-scenes footage shows how Bo oversaw every detail of the music, even getting behind Kenny Jones's drum kit to show him exactly how a riff should go. Bo Diddley's songs are mostly about Bo Diddley the rock & roll legend, but the group is terrific (every rock & roll band should have four drummers!) and everyone is obviously having a ball--especially Wood, who spends the whole concert grinning like a school boy to be on stage with one of his heroes. --Geof Miller

Two distinct portraits of Chuck Berry emerge in this lavish four-disc set built around Hail! Hail! Rock n' Roll, director Taylor Hackford's 1986 documentary/concert film. On one side there's the Berry who wrote a catalogue's worth of genre-defining songs ("Maybellene," "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," and so many others), all of them filled with wit, delightful stories, and poetry. He's also the guitarist who virtually patented many of rock's seminal licks, and the showman who attracted some top musicians to celebrate his 60th birthday with a concert in St. Louis, his hometown. On the other hand, there's the Berry who, in the course of the film as well as the accompanying bonus material, emerges as a prickly cheapskate who drove the filmmakers and musicians nuts with his absurd demands and unpredictable behavior. Together they make a fascinating look at the guy who justifiably calls himself "the father of rock 'n' roll."

Hackford's original film, now issued with a crisp, anamorphic transfer and digital sound, occupies Disc One. A parade of classics are heard during the climactic concert, performed by Berry and a superb band (led by Keith Richards and featuring guitarist Robert Cray and Johnny Johnson, Berry's original pianist, among others), with guest shots by Eric Clapton (smoking on the slow blues "Wee Wee Hours"), Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, and Julian Lennon (whose dad was an unabashed Berry fan). There are revealing offstage glimpses, too, like Berry confessing that he only took up music full-time because there was more money in it than in housepainting, or a weary, wasted Richards admitting that "I was mad to take the gig" but gamely standing up to his idol at every turn (watch for a memorable moment during the very first song of the concert, when Chuck attempts to change key in mid-tune and Keith sternly shakes him off).

The three discs of bonus features add a lot more to the portrait. Much of it is terrific: A nostalgic Berry poring over his scrapbook with Robbie Robertson of the Band; some lengthy rehearsal jams with Clapton, Richards, and James; hours (literally) of convivial conversation with Little Richard, Bo Diddley, and other rock pioneers. But if you're the type who can't turn away from car wrecks, don't miss "The Reluctant Movie Star," an hour-long "making of" documentary, for it's here that Hackford and the others who worked on the film tell their war stories. The Chuck Berry they know demanded to be paid every day, in cash, or he'd refuse to be filmed. He showed up for a dinner meeting at L.A.'s posh Le Dome with a bag of McDonald's takeout. And two days before the St. Louis concert, he announced that he was leaving town for a gig in Ohio, where he proceeded to blow out his voice--so his vocals all had to be overdubbed after the fact (an extra payday, natch). Hail! Hail! Rock n' Roll was already an entertaining two hours. But the various extra material, none of it seen before and all of it introduced by Hackford, makes this "ultimate collector's addition" a must-have. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Oh yes oh yes oh yes.......2007-07-06

This thing is great! From the basics, from the intro by the director, laying the foundation for the film, from the rehearsal scenes showing Chuck arguing with Keith Richards, all the way to the final concert scenes. This thing burns! If you love rock n roll you will love this DVD. The CD that comes with it is very good too. A good investment overall.

5 out of 5 stars History lesson and pure entertainment.......2007-07-01

Pricey but a great lesson in rock and roll history. Rehearsals with Keith Richards and Eric Clapton are awesome. The meeting and discussion between Chuck and Robbie Roberson is priceless. Look at it as $12 per disk. I think it is worth it!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating work on Chuck Berry.......2007-06-23

This is a terrific compendium of materials related to a concert by Chuck Berry, featuring an "all star" back up band (including Keith Richards, Steve Jordan, Chuck Leavell, Bobby Keys, Johnnie Johnson, and so on) and guests (Robert Cray [who also did some back up playing], Julian Lennon, Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, and Eric Clapton). The rationale for this effort? One point by Keith Richards: "I wanted to serve Chuck up with a good band, because he hadn't had one in years and years."

What makes this work so worthwhile is that its four discs cover a great deal of territory. Disc # 1 is the concert film. Disc # 2 features some rehearsals plus a video on the "making of the concert," with illuminating glimpses of the complex person who is Chuck Berry. Discs # 3 and # 4 feature reflections by some of the founders of rock and roll (Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, for instance), a conversation between Robbie Robertson and Berry, and so on.

The first disc is the concert film. It opens with some background on Chuck Berry, including a rendering of his early singing at the "Cosmo" in East St. Louis, with Berry actually singing in the wreck of the old building that remained. He retained his work as a carpenter and painter until the money from singing made it safe to give up those trades. Nice bits include: Bo Diddley and Little Richard talking about Berry's and their role in early rock and roll; Bruce Springsteen talking of the one time when he and his band backed Berry in a concert. Keith Richards was the musical director of this effort, culminating in a concert at the Fox Theatre. The disc amply portrays the sometime tension between Richards and Berry and the sometimes bond between them. There is also a nice bit, with Eric Clapton wondering about the forces leading to Berry's mercurial behavior. There are also nice interviews with Willie Dixon (who sometimes backed Berry on recordings) and Berry's family and Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison..

The concert itself? It includes nice versions of many of Berry's greatest hits (although it must be noted that he had little voice left, after having blown his voice out in a gig just before the concert itself; he rerecorded his singing later on, so that the concert as recorded does not give us his singing at the concert itself--but a later recording). Some of the songs: "Roll over Beethoven," "Back in the USA" (sung by Linda Ronstadt), "Sweet Little Sixteen," Johnny B. Goode" (sung by Julian Lennon), "Rock and Roll Music" (rollickingly sung by Etta James), and so on.

As a concert film, it is top notch, well worth exploring (despite the need to have Berry rerecord his singing at a later date to be dubbed into the film).

Disc # 2 is also exemplary. It begins with several rehearsal cuts. There is a guitar jam to start, with Richards, Clapton, and Berry taking turns at guitar licks. There is a bit that is very nice where Johnnie Johnson (one of Berry's original band mates when he was starting out) starts vamping on piano; Clapton and others join in; Berry returns to the stage from the audience and sings a great blues turn. Finally, Etta James does a wonderful job in "Hootchie Cootchie Gal."

There follows a film about the making of the concert. One gets a much clearer picture of Berry-the-person, warts and all. His mania for money is well portrayed. The difficulties in preparing for the concert and in filming aspects of the concert film are worth viewing. There is a nice discussion of the alpha male conflict between Richards and Berry. There is measured discussion of Berry's times in prison. All in all, an illuminating disc.

This review is already too long, so Discs # 3 and # 4 are not covered. But they, too, add heft to the understanding of Chuck Berry and the origins of rock and roll.

A very well done opus.

Part concert documentary, part pop-cultural time capsule, Bert Stern's Jazz on a Summer's Day chronicles the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival with an approach as deceptively relaxed, even impulsive, as the music itself. Still photographer Stern sidesteps more formal documentary conventions such as narrative voiceovers to wander purposefully from festival stage to boarding-house jam sessions, taking in the parallel color and motion of the America's Cup preparations when he isn't capturing rich color footage of the performances and the celebratory mood of the concertgoers. In the process, he documents American jazz at a notably golden moment in its development--diverse, adventurous, and still broadly popular, this was jazz not yet under the shadow of rock and youth culture, played by an integrated artistic community a few short years away from social and political turmoil that would boil divisively to the surface during the '60s. To say Stern was rolling film in a jazz Camelot is overstatement, but only slightly so.

Stern's circular approach and wonderful eye achieve a breezy languor at the expense of more comprehensive coverage of the festival's bumper crop of strong jazz, blues, and gospel musicians. Perhaps inevitably, the camera lingers on Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, and George Shearing. Avid fans of later styles may be frustrated by the fleeting glimpses of other musicians such as Eric Dolphy and Art Farmer, or the honor roll of classic jazz stylists whose Newport sets weren't included in the film, but such omissions seem forgivable, if not necessary, to Stern's serendipitous design. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars an excellent preservation of time.......2007-05-01

This is a beautiful looking film. Stern was essentially a photographer who got ahold of film equipment and was able to document this event (the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival). The sheer quality of the images (keep in mind it was 1958) really reflect Stern's true calling as a photographer. That being said, no, he is not a filmmaker by trade; if you are looking for a masterful film, look elsewhere; if you are looking for footage of the jazz musicians, by themsleves, isolated from the experience of playing to an audience, look elsewhere. However, if you want a great looking document portraying the experience of great jazz musicians playing to a crowd in 1958, and what it really looked and felt like, this is the film you must own. In my opinion, the opening scenes of Jimmy Guiffre playing (a vastly underrated jazz legend) are enough to get someone hooked. Lastly, this is one of the times when the DVD-format really shows its advantages in terms of sound. It's fantastic, and really captures the experience of this 1958 event like nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous bit of jazz history.......2007-01-05

We got this after seeing the Anita O'Day clips on YouTube. We think she certainly was one of the stars of this event, but the entire documentary is delightful and inspiring, both for the music recorded and the recorded moments of the jazz audience in 1958. Worth owning!

5 out of 5 stars must have for traditional jazz fans.......2006-12-14

this is by far the best quality and footage I have seen of the
older jazz concerts. Color and sound are excellent, and it's
the best footage I have seen of Pop's and Mahalia. By contrast
the 62 festival is terrible in quality- poor sound and film.
It is annoying to cut away from the some of the performances,
but again it is still the best quality I have seen. If someone
has anything better out there, tell us about it.

5 out of 5 stars Time capsule of the 50's.......2006-11-30

I am recommending this tape to any serious music fanatic. Being an old curmudgeon probably helps with the fascination of this film as I can relate to the 50's era. What a change from Newport to Woodstock, only 10 years later. Growing up in the Hippie years and looking back to 1958, I feel we have lost a way of life along the way. If you are looking for a peek into the 50's, buy this. The filming is great for it's time (35mm). Oh, how I long for those days to return after watching this flim.

1 out of 5 stars *1/2 Star* Less than meets the eye.......2006-11-13

Pure and utter disappointment. I don't understand why this dvd received the high rating that it did. I suspect that some of the record labels pay people to post rave reviews that upon close inspection turn out to be hype. From a purely objective viewpoint, the audio and video quality of this release isn't worth the plastic its printed on. The color is washed out, and the audio sounds like rubber bands and distortion. Sure you get some head shots of some jazz greats, but that in and of itself is not worth the purchase. My advice... save your money.

Perhaps only Spike Lee could make a dignified yet extremely funny comedy-drama about phone sex. Theresa Randle (Bad Boys) is the title character, a hard-working actress who becomes addicted to this peculiar form of safe sex (the movie is verbal, not physical, in that department) at a high-class New York agency. Throughout the film, Girl 6 (she's unnamed beyond this) sports a dazzling array of new looks, hairstyles, and clothes. Randle radiates every step of the way. Lee even delivers on fantasy elements when Girl 6 finds herself in a send-up of blaxploitation films and a keen lampoon of The Jeffersons (the three-minute sequence is better than any planned TV-to-movie film that may come along). Revelations about Girl 6's life are brought out through her ex-husband (Isaiah Washington), who, in his very flawed but honest way, plans to reunite with her. Better yet are conversations with the next-door neighbor (Spike Lee, doing some of his best work). Solitary, experimental, with plenty of delicious cameos (including Madonna), Girl 6 is playwright Suzan-Lori Parks's first screenplay. Similar in tone to Lee's debut, She's Gotta Have It, Girl 6 also boasts an energetic mix of old and new songs by Prince and, as always with Lee, colorful camerawork. An alleyway kiss near the end is a great romantic image. --Doug Thomas

Description

Theresa Randle (BAD BOYS) delivers a breakthrough performance as a frustrated New York City actress who reluctantly takes a job as a phone sex operator. Even if she loves being every man's fantasy, can she ultimately handle her own reality? Quentin Tarantino, Madonna, Halle Berry, Naomi Campbell, Jenifer Lewis, Peter Berg, Debi Mazar, Michael Imperioli, John Turturro, Richard Belzer, Gretchen Mol and Ron Silver appear in this sexy comedy/drama written by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan- Lori Parks (TOPDOG/UNDERDOG) and featuring a hot soundtrack of hits by Prince

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked, Under Appreciated Film.......2007-04-06

This is one of my very favorite movies. It has an equal mix of humor and seriousness. Theresa Randle is an amazing actress, and she shows this in taking on her various incarnations during the movie.

At the beginning we meet a very beautiful woman who is sure she is meant to be an actor but is very unsure about herself as a woman and a person. A reading with Quentin Tarantino goes awry when she realizes there is nudity involved. She hestitantly goes through with it but quicly runs out. This doesn't bode well with her agent or her acting coach.

Her acting coach sees that she has a long way to go in acting ... and in growing up. She wishes her well as she drops her.

Looking for work, she stumbles upon a phone sex operator job. At first she is unsure about it, and is visibly stunned that not only is there a racial aspect to the job, and to the whole idea of it.

While her co-workers entertain themselves in other ways, to help in getting caught up with the job, Girl 6 doesn't and eventually becomes way too personally involved with clients. The first one is "Bob Regular."

During all this, her ex-husband tries to court her, store owners harass her thinking because she is a fantasy operator she's a prostitute as well.

Back to Bob Regular, a meeting is to take place, and she's warned by a friend/co-worker not to get involved, but she does it anyway.

She waits. She waits. She waits some more; puttiing her job on the line as she is late for work.

Finally, a man starts walking towards her; she calls out to him, but he looks at her with indifference and keeps going. Myself and others included feel that this WAS indeed Bob, but because she wasn't white (which is the pre-requisite for the operators's characters to be) he just kept walking. Or, it was just a stranger.

In any case, she is distraught and her plans of acting have been all but forgotten; claiming that she IS acting by being a phone sex operator.

As a result, she keeps working and working and working. Getting burnt out, and finally enforced to take a leave of absence.

She needs to work ... money, or just because she's getting hooked ... she decides to take a job that was previously offered by a character played by Madonna. A "home girl," Girl 6 does the phone sex job at home.

Getting further and further into the job, and giving out her personal number and address to clients is taking over; her friends don't see her, they only hear her.

It isn't until her life is threatened that she realizes she needs to break free and to change her life, and pursue the dream she had before: ACTING.

The film ends with her leaving for Hollywood and reading the same piece that she did at the beginning. Another director asks her to undress, but this time, she is determined to stay true to herself, and after giving an impressive reading, leaves. She is now sure of herself, her abilities and she has grown up and matured, and the audience noticeably sees this.

Theresa Randle does an impressive job in her role as the main character, and we learn to laugh, love, and appreciate this woman. We see her at her weakest, and we see her at her finest.

We only learn her real name at the end of the movie, which has been criticized, but this shows us that not only do we have to learn who she is, but so did she. When she hears her name, she expresses how "she likes the sound of it." It took the whole movie for her to truly find herself, and so it is finally complete when we hear it also.

Spike Lee acts in it as her roommate and friend, and does an excellent job doing so, and in directing. He uses various film techniques: colors, parody flashbacks at characters Girl 6 is inspired by, and all these really flesh out the mood or level of severity that the character is in. We are given humor to laugh as the character laughs, and to keep things from getting too morbid, but when he wants us to know things are serious, Lee ensures that we do indeed know that.

Throughout the movie, we also meet a girl through the news on t.v.; a girl who is innocent and sweet, who is injured severely, and we gain a parallel with Girl 6 herself.

Girl 6 watches the news and discovers a young girl has fallen in an elevator shaft and is in critical condition. At this point, she connects with the girl, but so do we soon see that the character really has connected.

The camera moves through the elevator shaft as if we were falling, and this effect continues at different points as Theresa Randle's character begins to fall also.

Eventually, Girl 6 and the girl meet in person which is also a link in recovery and strength.

Again, the type of photography in the movie; the colors, the realism/surrealism changes with the moods and degrees of the main character's development, and this really help to bring out the humor or seriousness of the piece.

Before she leaves for Hollywood, there is a scene where telephones of all shapes and colors fall smashing to the ground. This truly shows that Girl 6 isn't "Girl 6" any longer, but a grown woman who has conquered her fears, her addictions, and is ready to face what life has to bring her from then on.

Madonna and other notable actors/celebrities are featured throughout and they add their own distinctive personality to the film.

In conclusion, "Girl 6" is a movie is a dark comedy, a serious comedy; a mature movie offering laughter, tears, fear, and joy. It isn't for everyone, but if you're a fan of Theresa Randle, Spike Lee, Madonna, or just want something different ... something that has some weight to it, or some twisted humor, then this is definitely for you.

1 out of 5 stars Spike drops da bomb.......2006-09-17

Girl 6 is, to put it bluntly, a mess of baffling proportion.

The stunning and talented Theresa Randle rises as far above the material as is humanly possible. But Suzan-Lori Parks' script is too implausible to pass as drama, too silly to be a comedy. And Spike Lee's direction is so poor the whole thing looks like the work of an amateur.

More can be said, but after wasting a maddening hour and 45 minutes wading through this disaster, it would be doubly aggravating to invest more than five sentences recommending this one be avoided at all costs.

3 out of 5 stars Very strange, yet interesting.......2006-08-31

This movie is unique. It doesn't really make sense to me, but i like to see it. The music was awesome. How can you go wrong with Prince. Theresa Randle is beautiful!

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward to this.......2005-12-24

I knew this was going to happen sometime soon. Recently HBO has been showing Girl 6 a lot more frequently and I noticed that it was a DVD format so I knew Fox was going to release this. I actually like the movie, it has its moments. I love the soundtrack and the fact that it's a Spike Lee joint. I wonder what features will be on the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great on DVD.......2005-12-09

This message is to inform you that a DVD for GIRL 6 (1996) will be released on March 7, 2006.

Description

"Rock, Rock, Rock!" Made in 1956, this small-scale look at the then new phenomenon of Rock & Roll takes a page from the books of many of the big scale musicals made by Hollywood studios. Like them, the musical performances more than make up for the thin plot and occasional weak dialogue. The biggest bonus is that the last half of the film is all music, when Alan Freed brings his show to the hero's prom. Before the advent of music videos promoting record sales, this film is essentially a 76-minute commercial for the top Rock 'n' Roll and R & B artists of the time. Starring Alan Freed (at the peak of his power and influence as the man who actually coined the term "Rock 'n' Roll") it also marks the screen debut of Tuesday Weld - albeit that her singing was actually the angelic voice of Connie Francis. On Screen performances include those from Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, The Johnny Burnette Trio, LaVern Baker and The Freed Band.

Bonus Material: The Alan Freed Story The dean of rock music historians, Michael Ochs, describes the 'innocence' of the early Alan Freed concerts when 50% of the audience was black and 50% white. He chronicles the rise and fall of Freed as the voice of Rock 'n' Roll and the payola scandal the ended the DJ's career. Veteran musician Red Holloway speaks of America's narrow-mindedness when radio stations across the country decided to destroy records of this Rock and R&B music they considered to be damaging to the morals of American teenagers. Cornelius Grant, Motown's Music Director for Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells and The Temptations, credits Alan Freed with giving legitimacy to R&B by taking it to the mass music market and dubbing it Rock & Roll. Singer Bobby Vinton describes from his own experience how records were turned into hits in these early days of the Rock Era. In 1986 Alan freed was among the original Inductees to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and, in 1991, he received the ultimate accolade of a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

It was too boring and drawn out. Not a good story line, but awesome music.

4 out of 5 stars Stars are for the music...............2007-04-27

Those were the days, so much talent out there trying to make it in the
music world, and we get to see some of them at their best. Instead of
a movie with continuous music acts, they made a movie out of this one with
a yound T.W. taking the part of a teenager who cant afford a new dress for
the prom and this promotes classic 50's situations...and in between we get
all the musical gold. Very enjoyable and can be watched several times due
to the music.

4 out of 5 stars A Slice of the History of Rock and Roll.......2007-02-20

Rock, Rock, Rock offers a window into something that will only come along once.
The roots of rock come to life in this film. Frankie Lymon and The Teen-Agers
perform. This 13-year-old could sing. Unfortunately after puberty his career
collapsed; he never saw age 30. We also get a look at a young LaVern Baker and rockin' Chuck Berry.
The Alan Freed Story included on the DVD is quite interesting too. Don't be too critical of the
story, just lay back and enjoy the past.

3 out of 5 stars A "no lose" situation........2006-09-28

If you're a fan of early Rock n' Roll /Rhythm & Blues, you should enjoy this. The performances are mimed to the original recordings but ,hey , how much surviving footage of these performers exist? Enjoy it as a pretty decent document of an era long gone. Enjoy it for the utterly awful story and for certain performances that haven't worn as well with age. Interesting footnote: Look for an impossibly young Valerie Harper as an extra during the dance at the end of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars rock ,rock, rock.......2006-08-23

I loved this movie because I love Jimmy Cavallo & his House Rockers....used to see him when he played in Rochester, NY years ago.....He is still going strong evem after all these years!

5 out of 5 stars IT TOTALLY ROCKS!.......2007-07-01

I have 2 concert dvds of Chuck Berry now...and have a comparison..first I got the HAIL, HAIL ROCK AND ROLL...which is really good..but it is obviously more contrived and less spontaneous than this concert..it seems to hinder Chuck's talents...more of Keith Richards and Taylor Hackford's concert..but THIS dvd is PURE CHUCK BERRY and I'm really glad I decided to get it...it is pure energy..you really feel like you are THERE in the stadium...turn it up up up! It is how Chuck Berry REALLY IS...not hindering his talent and telling him how his concert should be like the HAIL, HAIL ROCK AND ROLL. get this one! and truly rock on! e sure to watch this when you are NOT multi-tasking...it deserves your undivided attention.

5 out of 5 stars Chuck Berrys' " Rock and Roll Music".......2007-01-10

This is a great DVD, showing what I am coming to see as Chuck in full stride touring mode. Showing up at the last minute, meeting the awe struck young back up band ( who are fine except for an abortive attempt at lead by their guitarist ) and boogying on stage and clearly loving what he was doing. You can see how Chuck is able to relate to his young white audience and really treat them to a show unmatched by any contemporary band, black or white. For they were watching and grooving to the real King of Rock and roll in his prime. The " Hail HailRock and Roll " DVD shows Chuck with the best back up, but this shows him in his youthful prime. Get it and you will see what everyone is giving him the accolades for. Hank Collins ,Orinda calif.

3 out of 5 stars Great performance; weak band.......2006-06-24

This video will be quite an eye-opener for anyone who didn't experience Chuck Berry performing at his peak. He is, as the other reviewers have said, fantastic. His body language is a natural extension of his guitar phrasing, and he is always finding new slants on his vocal phrasing. He is creativity in action, no question about it, and one of the great showmen.

Here is my reservation, which I'm surprised nobody has mentioned: the backing band is really pretty bad. Berry's predilection for playing with pickup bands was always a crapshoot, and on this occasion he didn't get the best results. They are obviously young and inexperienced, but that doesn't automatically disqualify them. Their big problem is that they drag the tempo seriously, as Chuck gamely, and even heroically, tries to keep things rocking. The drummer in particular is like a pair of heavy boots on Berry, when what he needed was dancing shoes, and you can see and hear CB telegraph his mild irritation in a couple of spots if you are alert.

If you are a Berry fan, or a rock-and-roll fan with an interest in the pioneers, that probably shouldn't stop you from buying this video. It is imperfect, but still a valuable document of a unique performer who could still electrify a crowd under less-than-ideal circumstances. Just don't expect that jumping groove that you get from the old Chess recordings. Keep in mind that the circumstances are less than ideal.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage 60's Chuck Berry.......2006-06-06

An excellent vintage look at Chuck Berry. This was done during a late 60's anti war concert given in Toronto. Solid musical work with the detatched feeling that Chuck Berry still has when you see him play at Indian Casino venues in 2004 and beyond. The sound quality is 60's at best and the DVD has really not enhanced the sound to pull out the best....but what do you say? If you saw Chuck Berry in the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's etc....this is the same show he has done then and now. He walks in, does a few chords with the pickup band...and away he goes! The show ends and there are no encores....it was that way then and still is now. Since he is younger here,...good duck walking with guitar work. This is worth getting to fill in gaps in your Berry Career Collection.( Little Richard did a session at this same concert with MUCH better audience connection...much sweating, clothes throwing.....etc. ) Just remember,.....no audio/video enhancement has been done here. PB

4 out of 5 stars Chuck Unleashed in Toronto!.......2006-04-29

This is some historic, quality concert footage of Chuck Berry live and unleashed at Toronto Canada's Rock n' roll Revival festival in September of 1969. There were several other rock n' roll legends on this bill, but this DVD contains Chuck's portion of the show which is well worth seeing. Chuck is in good form here, and his guitar and showmanship skills are on vivid display, duck walk and all.

It is interesting to see a young audience of hippie kids enjoying Berry's music so much since Chuck was not exactly the musical rage on the charts in 1969. It just goes to show that great music of any era can be appreciated by anyone with an open mind to it. The audience is treated to TWO versions of Chuck's masterpiece "Johnny B. Goode" where he delivers some flamboyant, extended solos. There are some nice close-up shots throughout the concert of Chuck laying down those trademark licks of his and of the young audience digging the music too.

Chuck's backing band here consists of three kids who were apparently chosen on a spur of the moment basis, and they are functional at best. The drummer, who looks about 18 or 19, fails to lay down a solid beat for most of the show and the bassist is barely audible, although the other guitarist holds the rhythm fairly well behind Chuck's lead guitar. This show would have benefitted from a tighter backing band, but Chuck is well known for the unfortunate practice of having local players back him wherever he performs. The biggest complaint I have is how the producers of this video chose to block out the last minute or two of the footage for the credits as Chuck rocks through the final solo of Johnny B. Goode.

Classic concert footage of Chuck Berry is something that is pretty rare, which makes this a treat for anybody who wants to experience the father of rock n' roll still at the peak of his performing powers. Anyone who enjoyed the 1987 film "Hail Hail Rock n' roll" should enjoy this a lot too.

The first sequel to The Love Bug is similar enough to the first film's charm and raucous comedy that it works on its own. Neither Dean Jones nor Michelle Lee are back, but a nice cast of familiar pros keeps things moving along slickly. The story finds Herbie helping Helen Hayes--yes, the First Lady of the American Theater--keep out of the clutches of Keenan Wynn's villain. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Love Bug's First Sequel.......2007-04-02

Probably the only amazing thing about this sequel is that it took so long before Disney released it. "The Love Bug" became a big hit for Disney, and for many years after the movie many children called all Beetles Herbie. This movie trades Dean Jones as Jim Douglas and Buddy Hackett as Tennessee Steinmetz for Helen Hayes as Mrs. Steinmetz (yes, she is related to Tennessee), Stefanie Powers as flight attendant Nicole Harris, and Ken Berry as newly minted lawyer Willoughby Whitfield.

The plot is quite different from the original. Herbie is no longer a race car, but lives a quiet life taking care of Mrs. Steinmetz. Nicole Harris also helps take care of Mrs. Steinmetz, doing so in a very assertive way throughout the movie. We learn very early in the movie that Alonzo Hawk, who also appeared in "The Absent Minded Professor" and "Son of Flubber," has his eye on the fire house where Mrs. Steinmetz lives. However, Mrs. Steinmetz is not in the mood to leave her home, which contains many memories of her late spouse.

Much of this movie involves a lot of silliness. Herbie and Mrs. Steinmetz manage to get up to Alonzo Hawk's office on a window washer, with predicable mayhem. Herbie takes a trip on the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge. Herbie also manages to make a fool of Alonzo Hawk when he attempts to drive Herbie. However, all of these fun little incidents are mere preludes to the last portion of this movie where Disney finally stops fooling around and lets loose.

Mr. Hawk decides to take all of Mrs. Steinmetz's possessions in an attempt to force Mrs. Steinmetz from the fire house. Nicole and Willoughby locate the furniture and take it all back, but only after some of the best scenes in the movie. This movie seems to go faster and faster from this point forward. I will let a viewer find out for themselves how this one ends.

This movie is less fun than "The Love Bug." There are too many contrived scenes and the humor is more forced. However, a lot of the Herbie magic remains. When the movie finally allows Herbie to take the lead this movie has its best, and funniest, moments. The last third of this movie is particularly joyful and I recommend it for fans of the first movie.

I recommended "The Love Bug" as a family movie suitable for all members of the family. "Herbie Rides Again" is also a family movie, but this movie may be less suitable for the youngest members of the family. Alonzo Hawk makes a great villain; in fact, he steals nearly all his scenes, but may also become an inadvertent role model for very young children. I would think that most children by the age of 6 or 7 years old will find this movie funny and enjoyable.

I think fans of Helen Hayes and Stefanie Powers will also enjoy this movie. Helen Hayes is very natural in her role, even when the scenes are absurd. Stefanie Powers takes everything in stride and is the most dynamic person in the movie after Alonzo Hawk.

The Love Bug franchise has seen its share of ups and downs over the years. This movie remains one of the better entries in the series and is worth a couple of viewings, particularly if you are a fan of the original. Pull in the kids, the spouse and make this one a family affair.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Love Bug 2: Driving Miss Hayes.......2006-02-25

Five years after Herbie the Volkswagen bug made his big-screen debut in Disney's legendary hit film, "The Love Bug," the little racecar returns with the lovable 1974 comedy, "Herbie Rides Again!" This time around, Herbie is left in the care of Tennessee Steinmetz's kindly, old, widow aunt, played by Helen Hayes, who lives in the same familiar firehouse from the original film. Disney staple Dean Jones and sidekick Buddy Hackett are nowhere to be seen this time around. Dean's character, Jim Douglas, has gone off to Europe to race in European cars, while Tennessee has rushed off to Tibet to care for his ailing guru. Instead, we have the always charmingly dimwitted Ken Berry (great for us "Mama's Family" fans!), who is sent by his greedy and filthy rich developer uncle, Alonzo Hawk (the fantastically wicked Keenan Wynn), to extract old-lady Steinmetz so that the firehouse can be torn down and replaced by a shopping mall. Problem is, Mrs. Steinmetz has no intention of leaving her beloved home where she married fireman Mr. Steinmetz and has lived all these years. She shares the place with Herbie the VW, an antique music machine, an old cable-car called Number 22, and a lovely stewardess named Nicole Harris (Stefanie Powers) who quickly shows Berry's character, Willoughby, how she feels about Mr. Hawk and his associates. Once Nicole has explained to Willoughby what his uncle is really like, the two quickly fall in love (with Herbie's help, of course) and Willoughby immediately leaves his new job as a lawyer for Hawk Industries. Their troubles are not over that easily, however. Alonzo Hawk is determined to take down the old firehouse, even though he doesn't even own the land yet! He decides to employ harassment tactics, starting with stealing the little car that drives Mrs. Steinmetz everywhere and protects her constantly, Herbie! The film kicks the slapstick humor and wild stunts up a notch when Herbie, making his daily rounds with Mrs. Steinmetz, must repeatedly outwit and outdrive Alonzo and his goons, Helen Hayes playing the Mr. Magoo part perfectly all the while. But she's not as out of tune as she seems. When Mrs. Steinmetz decides to play tough, she plays tough, with Herbie's help that is, not to mention the help of her new cowboy suitor, Mr. Judson (John McIntire), along with Nicole, Willoughby, and an army of VW bugs!

"Herbie Rides Again" was the first in a still flourishing line of sequels to the Disney phenomenon, "The Love Bug." Directed by the same fantastic Disney Legend who helmed the original, Robert Stevenson, this is no mere rehash of the first! While the original film still reigns superior to the other offerings, the follow-ups are nevertheless fantastic! "Herbie Rides Again" features an all new story, completely off the racetrack, and plenty of car-chases loaded with some of Herbie's most legendary stunts, such as driving up the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge, driving around on the ledge of a skyscraper, and surfing in the Pacific Ocean! While it lacks a bit of that Walt Disney touch (Walt past away even before the first Herbie film was released, though he did have a hand in it), the film stays true to the original with the same great music, another excellent cast, and plenty of Herbie magic! It is truly `70's Disney, but not everyone considers that a bad thing. "Herbie Rides Again" is all about visual family comedy and fun, and in that it excels! The movie is presented in widescreen on this DVD release, though some have stated that it is not the true widescreen, and while the picture looks scores better than some other Disney DVDs, like "Blackbeard's Ghost," it doesn't look perfect. There are also no bonus features to be found, but if you really want some, all the Herbie sequels up to the 1997 TV movie are mentioned from time to time on the bonus disc of the original 1969 classic DVD. That is a "must-own" 2-disc set for any Herbie fan! In fact, I really recommend the boxed set of all 4 classic Herbie films, along with "The Love Bug" TV movie on VHS and the DVD release of "Herbie: Fully Loaded!" Both of those last two are often referred to as remakes, even by Disney Archivists! It annoys me every time I hear it! They are both sequels, despite the TV movie's title and the fact that it is completely disregarded by "Fully Loaded." Anyway, all are great films in their own way, and "Fully Loaded" is nearly as great as the original! If you love Herbie, watch for my other reviews and pick `em all up!

2 out of 5 stars Just a poor re-hash of "The Love Bug".......2004-06-08

Like many sequels, the writers of this one were unable to come up with a new plot idea, so they basically re-hashed the original. Ken Berry takes the Dean Jones role, Stephanie Powers takes the Michelle Lee role, the demise of the firehouse replaces the demise of Herbie, etc, etc. Also like many sequels, the result was poor at best. While it had its moments [the parade of Beetles], for the most part, "Herbie Rides Again" seemed to try to hard to be clever...and as a result, fails.

As for the transfer...I couldn't help but notice how "tight" all the scenes with the actors seemed to be...especially the ones inside Herbie. The reason? It appears this movie was filmed in 1.66:1 ratio...and Disney, in its usual infinite wisdom, has trimmed information from the picture to make it fit a 16x9 screen. Geez...even Disney's widescreen movies cut out part of the picture. These guy are just clueless, aren't they?

The sound seemed a little off to me as well, with the music sometimes overwhelming the dialogue.

All that being said, my recommendation is to buy "The Love Bug" [which has an overall excellent transfer, with the exception of one out-of-focus scene in Chinatown], and forget all the sequels.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Humour.......2005-07-01

In 1972 the class gang played a prank on one of the students. 10 years later they are attending there reunion and things start to go wrong when the student they picked on has turned up seeking revenge. they find themselves trapped in the school and well.... watch it to find if if your interested this far.

I picked this up in the cheapie bin, and I suggest you find it there too. It isnt worth much, honestly. It's got some pretty funny moments, but it's not classic funny like Animal House and Vacation. So find it cheap and it's worth it, but dont pay more then ten bucks.

Theres no bonus features or anything, apparently the US version comes with a booklet, but even if ours did I dont think I wouldve done more the flicked through for a glance if that.

It's not dull or boring, it flows rather well, but I predicted the plot a qaurter of the way into the movie, and I think you could too, so the end was pretty much suspected. There is some pretty good effects, espeicely for an 80's film. I heard something about this movie original intended to be a sequel to Animal House, but they obviously didnt do it that way, but the guy who played Ken Dorfman in AH is in this film as a diffrent charactor, as well as a few familuer faces but I dont know there names.

Worthy of a rent, worth the money as long as you dont have to pay alot and yur sure to get a laugh or few out of it!

5 out of 5 stars Sister love isn't just for Appalachia anymore!.......2005-02-14

This movie takes it's place among the greatest films of all time. First is Citizen Kane, second Casablanca, third, well you guessed it, National Lampoon's Class Reunion! Thank you John Hughes for writing one of the most profound movies ever to be seen and heard by the human experience.

4 out of 5 stars I Love Zane Busby!!!.......2002-03-20

Wacky! Goofy! Stoooopid!!! Fun! This slasher film parody has me in stitches everytime I watch it. Zane Busby as the cripple who sold her soul to the devil is one of the best character performers of all time. Her facial expressions and side comments crack me up. The late Ann Ramsey (Throw Mama From The Train)as the cafeteria worker brings back memories(?) of mystery meat lunches and creamed whatever that green goop was as part of the high school nutrition program. The few off-color bits in the film are done well and not disgusting or shocking. I've heard and seen worse on late night talk shows! All we needed now was to have Elvira show up as the guidance councillor or school nurse! A job well done on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Little known but funny.......2001-10-27

Little known and little remembered except by those who used to watch HBO in the 80's. An early spoof of slasher movies, Class Reunion stands out for the very funny cast of well known character actors.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2000-11-17

This movie is so funny! Totally corny, but take it and all other National Lampoon films with a grain of salt. I have fond memories of watching this with my mom and little brother when I was 10 or so. I just saw it again the other night on cable and you definitely need to watch the unedited version to get all the laughs out of it!

The single DVD is the exact same as the old VHS version but with 5.1 audio and remastered video quality! I'll no doubt buy the multi-disc versions latter, but I have been waiting for YEARS for this to be released on DVD! I give this release 5 stars and you even get a bonus 14 track CD for the car!
