More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. Originally released as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:
A Pure Delight!.......2007-06-04
Brandy's Cinderella is the best version of all. Her voice is perfection, her acting genuine and touchingly honest. In comparison 1965's Cinderella, Lesley Ann Warren, sings in a high, reedy voice like fingernails on a chalkboard. Julie Andrews' version is hoary, the singing bland and stilted.
In the 1997 version of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella all the stops have been let out and a timeless masterpiece appears. The production is a starburst of colorful sets, exquisite costumes, tantalizing terpsichore, In this Cinderella the music takes center stage. It is at once sweet, then soulful and always undeniably beautiful.
The first view of the Prince's Ball with the the dancers dressed in flowing, shades of blue, the orchestra blooming into a glorious waltz melody is rapturous, the overhead camera capturing the magic of the couples dancing, whirling in symmetry. This is television magic at its best.
The true beauty of this production, beyond it's acting and music, is that it gives voice to multi-racial America. Why can't a black girl be Cinderella. After all, the story of Cinderella originated in China. If the movie were all black or all Asian, then it could be pushed aside and said it's only for blakc people or Asian people. But the movie is inclusive, showing that fairy tales are not the exclusive domain of white people. Now little black, Asian, white, brown children know they too can be princes and princeses.
If that doesn't sound very important imagine watching television during your childhood and never seeing anyone who looks like you. You loved Oz, but the wizard, Dorothy and even the witch was white.(Ok, the witch was green, but that doesn't count). Your favorite martian was white, Samantha and Darrin were white. You liked them all, but what does looking at a white world do to young, brown, black, or Asian minds. It tells you that you are invisible, you don't count.
Things have changed. Everybody is on tv now. But we still need images that reflect persons of color in positive ways. We too are America. The producer of the production should be very proud.
Wonderful Movie.......2007-05-29
The music is some of the best I've ever heard. Brandy is very good in the role.
Cinderella.......2007-05-13
I loved this movie!! the cast was wonderful although honestly i wasn't impressed with brandy's performance, but all the songs were catchy; I loved them! I remeber watching it when it came out on tv and loving it.Ten years later i still feel the same way about it!
Why no Soundtrack on CD?.......2007-05-01
I love the everything about this musical...particularly the musical performances. Does anyone know why the soundtrack was not released on CD? Is there anything the 'public' -- namely me -- can do about that.
Disappointing.......2007-04-10
I wanted to like this production, and back when it first aired I was looking forward to it with great anticipation. But it was rather disappointing, overall; having now seen all three televised versions, I have to say that this is my least favourite of the lot.
Oh, it has its good points (the prince is very likeable, for instance) but the production is marred by poor casting. I can't believe that a more charismatic actress (and better singer) couldn't be found for the title role. In addition, there are several other primary cast members that I really don't care for (and whom, in a few instances, I actively dislike). I know, that's a pretty subjective statement, but heck, I found both Whoopi Goldberg and Jason Alexander pretty darn annoying in their roles.
While this is certainly a more polished production than the earlier attempts, what on earth were they thinking with the set design? I suppose a whimsical look was being attempted, to depict a fairy-tale type of world. But honestly, the sets are so ugly in many cases as to be distracting to the eye.
But perhaps my main disappointment was with the orchestrations. I didn't see any need whatsoever to give an updated pop sound to the instrumentals. Rogers and Hammerstein musicals have a very distinctive, classic sound, and I found I missed it terribly; it was a big mistake, in my opinion, to change the music.
So... what did I like, you are probably wondering! Well, it is still Rogers and Hammerstein---these are great songs, so it's worth watching for those.

Fun is probably worth the purchase for "Mickey and the Beanstalk," the second half of this combo-film. "Beanstalk" includes the last performance by Walt Disney of Mickey Mouse. It also has Donald Duck and Goofy as comrades who climb the beanstalk in their back yard to face Willy the Giant. This segment actually achieves the goals of the film's title. The first half, however, is "Bongo," the story of a addlepated circus bear. "Bongo" is more poky and interest-free. Dinah Shore warbles and narrates the segment, and it goes on much too long for its purpose. Don't trade your cow in for it. --Keith Simanton
Description
FUN AND FANCY FREE, Walt Disney's 9th full-length animated masterpiece, is a delightful gem that not only sparkles with charm, but is unbelievably rich in history-making Disney moments. It was the last animated feature starring Walt Disney as the voice of Mickey Mouse, and the only film featuring all four of Walt Disney's most famous characters -- Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Jiminy Cricket. Following Disney's classic tradition of great storytelling, unforgettable characters, music, and adventure, FUN AND FANCY FREE is the joyful telling of BONGO and MICKEY & THE BEANSTALK, two timeless tales magically brought to life by the beloved Jiminy Cricket and the masterful combination of animation and live action. And now, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, FUN AND FANCY FREE has been beautifully restored so a whole new generation can experience the magic of Walt Disney's original theatrical vision -- for the very first time! One of Disney's happiest films ever, FUN AND FANCY FREE makes a valuable addition to your Disney video collection.
Customer Reviews:
Not one of Disney's Finest...........2007-05-30
I watched this DVD with a younger family member recently and found the first story "Bongo" way too long and such a product of the 1940's to be only of historical interest. The second story "Micky and the Beanstalk" is better though I admit I found famed ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen's, two puppets a little, er, unsettling. If you are intent on viewing or owning every Disney animated classic ever made go ahead and choose this but the average viewer is not missing much in skipping this one.
Excellent Product.......2007-05-18
Product was in perfect condition. My kids and I love it. It brings back a lot of fun memories.
Fun and Fancy Free.......2007-03-08
My son loves this DVD very much. He is only 2, I don't think he understands the whole stories, but he loves those characters.
Classic and charming DVD.......2006-12-06
When I ordered this I didn't exactly know what I was getting. I knew it had the classic "Mickey and the Beanstalk" that I had loved as a child, but I didn't know it was the edited version narrated by Edgar Bergen. I also didn't know about the other short feature "Bongo", narrated by Dinah Shore.
I admit I was a little put off at first, but this quickly became one of our very favorite movies. "Mickey and the Beanstalk" is presented as a story told by Edgar Bergen at Luana's birthday party with many silly interuptions by Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. Jiminy Cricket chimes in occasionally too. On a child enjoyment level the character interaction at the party is excellent and really entertains children. The actual cartoon has really withstood the test of time. My daughter adores Mickey Mouse and she gets absorbed in the exploits of Mickey, Donald and Goofy as they take on the giant to rescue the magic harp. The giant is a particularly charming character. For adults this is like owning a little piece of cinematic history. You have the classic cartoon with classic characters as well as Edgar Bergen and his two famous "friends" Charlie and Mortimer. I take off one star because we don't love the Bongo cartoon.
A true gem restored.......2006-10-18
I loved this movie, particularly the Mickey and the beanstalk as it was originally done with Edgar Bergen. I hated the fact he was dropped in the TV version.
As a professional ventriloquist myself, I am slightly biased as I am a big Bergen fan. Even still, Mickey and the beanstalk was one of the funniest cartoon Disney ever did.
Bongo was cute but maybe too cute for my taste. I liked Dinah Shores narration. Don't forget she was a big star when this movie came out.
Get it and enjoy the fun!

Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic masterpiece, first performed in Russia in 1936, has been lauded not only for the spectacular musical score, but also for the story itself--of a young boy who outwits a wily wolf. George Daugherty brings this timeless tale to modern audiences by seamlessly weaving live-action with animation and music by the RCA Symphony Orchestra. The story opens as a grandfather (Lloyd Bridges) hosts his daughter (Kirstie Alley) and grandson (Ross Malinger from Sleepless in Seattle) during a visit to his country cottage. After lunch, the trio settles in as grandfather recounts "The Story" of Peter's adventures with a bird, cat, and dizzy duck on the outskirts "of a very dark forest." The film morphs into a clever cartoon designed by the legendary Chuck Jones (of Wile E. Coyote fame). The "story within a story" leaps to life while the accompanying musical instruments also emerge as playful personalities. It is no wonder this heartwarming family film has received numerous awards for bringing an appreciation of classical music to young viewers. Equally excellent are the DVD bonuses including a making-of featurette, and a captivating introduction to the symphony orchestra. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Customer Reviews:
satisfied.......2007-03-14
I purchased this movie as a gift, so haven't viewed it, but it arrived in a timely fashion, so I was pleased.
The best "PETER AND THE WOLF" ever.......2007-02-26
I was surprised to read the other review, because I recently bought the
re-released DVD reissue of this "Peter and The Wolf" for my 6 year-old
grandson, and not only did he love it, but so did I!! I am a
professional violinist and music educator, and know this score inside
and out. The previous reviewer who said the producers had changed Prokofiev's music is dead wrong -- it is note for note perfect, and in addition, is beautifully played. (It was actually Disney's version that was cut!!)
The characters in Chuck Jones version, designed by Mr. Jones, are
delightful -- and not just a recycling of his Warner Bros., ensemble.
The animated tale, which is the centerpiece of this production, and
where Prokofiev's score plays out in entirety, is magical. And Kirstie
Alley's narration is full of life and spirit -- really fantastic. I
also loved Lloyd Bridges as the grandfather, and young Ross Malinger as
both the live action and animated Peter. The live action parts were
magical, and gave some real-life relevance to the animated story, and
the ending was enchanting. It brought a tear to my eye. Ross Malinger
was endearing in "Sleepless In Seattle," and he goes to the next step
here. And his rapport with Lloyd Bridges seemed so very real. A
fantastic bonus to this production is an extraordinary "Guide To The
Symphony Orchestra" bonus feature at the end, which thoroughly explains
to the young viewer how Prokofiev used the musical instruments to
portray the various characters. And the producers wisely use YOUNG
teenage musicians to demonstrate the instruments, which really makes it
come to life for young viewers. I Googled for more information on this
production -- I can't figure out why it isn't more frequently seen. I
noticed it won the Emmy for Best Children's Program, as well as many
other Emmy nominations and awards. I also saw that the critics gave it
great reviews -- one from the Philadelphia daily newspaper called it
"The best children's television special ever." So it is a mystery to me
why this production is not a television classic. But in the meantime,
do yourself a favor -- and for your children and grandchildren -- and
watch it!
Kids found it boring.......2007-02-25
If you're trying to instill an appreciation for classical music -- and I can't imagine any other reason to show Peter and the Wolf to kids -- don't buy this version. The DVD does have background music from the symphony, but the musical aspect is NOT EVEN MENTIONED. The true test is in its appeal: 3-year-old boy, 5-year-old boy, 9-year-old girl ... all found it boring.
Great for 3 year olds.......2007-02-23
My three year old loved being able to see the characters from Peter and the Wolf - it really solidified the story for him. I highly recommend it.
A little hokey, but all the elements were there.......2007-02-12
Not a great retelling of the story, some of the Hollywood magic gets in the way, but all the elements of Peter and the Wolf are captured.

History will place an asterisk next to A.I. as the film Stanley Kubrick might have directed. But let the record also show that Kubrick--after developing this project for some 15 years--wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition of Pinocchio, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg's kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brian Aldiss short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long") after Kubrick's death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. A flawed masterpiece of sorts, in which Spielberg's gift for wondrous enchantment often clashes (and sometimes melds) with Kubrick's harsher vision of humanity, the film spans near and distant futures with the fairy-tale adventures of an artificial boy named David (Haley Joel Osment), a marvel of cybernetic progress who wants only to be a real boy, loved by his mother in that happy place called home.
Echoes of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun are clearly heard as young David, shunned by his trial parents and tossed into an unfriendly world, is joined by fellow "mecha" Gigolo Joe (played with a dancer's agility by Jude Law) in his quest for a mother-and-child reunion. Parallels to Pinocchio intensify as David reaches "the end of the world" (a Manhattan flooded by melted polar ice caps), and a far-future epilogue propels A.I. into even deeper realms of wonder, even as it pulls Spielberg back to his comfort zone of sweetness and soothing sentiment. Some may lament the diffusion of Kubrick's original vision, but this is Spielberg's A.I. (complete with one of John Williams's finest scores), a film of astonishing technical wizardry that spans the spectrum of human emotions and offers just enough Kubrick to suggest that humanity's future is anything but guaranteed. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Multiple Personality Direction.......2007-06-27
This film will surely hold up well historically. In 2099 when the reviewers are doing their "most influential films of the century" reflections I'm sure this will be on many lists. Both Kubrick and Speilberg annointed this film with their own special genius. It's an uncomplicated remake of any "I want to be a real boy" story filtered through very complicated visualizations.
David is 11 years old. He weighs 60 pounds. He is 4 feet, 6 inches tall. He has brown hair. His love is real. But he is not........2007-06-22
When I first saw this film back in the summer of 2001, I definitely saw more Stanley Kubrick then Steven Spielberg like alot of people did, but then again this was Kubrick's dream project for many many years. And after he died, Spielberg figured the best way to honor Kubrick was to make this film.
Set in the not-so-far future where humans can make realistic robots (called mechas) comes an interesting take on the famous fairy tale Pinocchio.
David (wonderfully played by Haley Joel Osment) is the first of his kind,an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, who really wants to be a real boy.
I still don't understand why no-one really liked this film, yes it's long but I love long films. I guess people weren't ready for a film like this or the fact it was a weird combination of two director's styles.
But overall I found this a very enjoyable film and thought Haley Joel Osment should have gotten an nomination for his wonderful and heartbraking performance. And if you watch him very closely, throught out the whole film,he never blinks his eyes.
Pinocchio meets Blade Runner indeed..........2007-05-14
A drama in all the sense of the word, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, brings to the screen the story of a couple that adopts an android capable of love following their son going into a coma. Things become rather complicated when the young boy regains consciousness...
The cast does a good job in their respective roles though its Haley Joel Osment that steals the show.
The similarities with Pinocchio are evident and the film focuses on human relations, hope and inner strength, as well as love, devotion and integrity.
Very serious and very slow at times it does not aim so much to entertain as to stimulate one's mind and emotions.
Recommended for Haley Joel Osment (who is really great) fans and for those with a taste for depression in the extreme.
Blade Runner meets Pinocchio.......2007-02-24
I will say the movie is mesmerizing to watch simply because the visual effects are so good, but it is a highly derivative movie. Kind of like Blade Runner meets Pinocchio with an excrutiatingly long ending as Spielberg tries to sap as much emotion as he can out of this. Personally, I thought it was enough when David finally discovered he wasn't real. That scene carried with it a ton of emotional weight, but of course Spielberg couldn't content himself with such a somber ending to what was a very long journey for the boy to meet his maker. Probably the most impressive scene was that in the robot graveyard under the light of an artificial moon, where robots tried to piece themselves back together from the left over parts. It really gave this viewer empathy with their plight, especially when they were rounded up for the ensuing carnage in a carnival of robotic horrors. Spielberg picks and chooses from a number of science fiction themes as well as children's stories to piece together this ode to artificial intelligence.
A Boy and His Mom, based on 'Super-toys Last All Summer Long'.......2007-02-05
Steven Spielberg is the best movie director ever, if not the greatest human being on our Earth... Now... for the review... A.I. Artificial Intelligence was originally a project - a long time project - of director Stanley Kubrick (Dr Strangelove, Eyes Wide Shut). Kubrick died before the project had progressed too far. I knew this movie was dedicated to Kubrick but the movie was just so very good I spent little time trying to discover any hidden meaning. I was thinking, 'this is the best movie I've ever seen'. Spielberg and crew do a wonderful job here.
Haley Joel Osmet plays 'David' an 11 year old boy who is actually an advanced robot. David is an experimental design equipped to learn and feel. David is adopted into the family of Monica and Henry Swinton (Frances O'Connor and Sam Robards). They have an older son Martin (Jake Thomas) who isn't always kind to his new brother.
The message isn't very subtle. . . Over and over and over, and over, David cries, "Please make me a real boy".
In the end David is hugged by his mother Monica and lies down with her, the narrator saying, "for one day. . . there was no Martin. . . no Henry. . . no doctor Hobby. . ." Only David and his Mom.

Kids rule; stepmothers, witches, and boogeymen drool (quite literally) in this saucy retelling of the classic Grimm's fairy tale. It's night and the kids are in bed, afraid of the dark. Searching for a favorite bedtime story, their modern-day dad--apparently widowed--finds a mysterious volume, dusts it off, and begins to read aloud. Ironically, this 90-minute tale is anything but soothing. Edgy characters abound, from the ax-wielding stepmother (played by Delta Burke with Miss Piggy flair), to a gun-toting wood fairie and a wicked witch (Lynn Redgrave) who nips from the bottle. Thanks to a rather effeminate Sandman (Howie Mandel channeling interior designer Christopher Lowell), the journey takes many wacky turns but ends on a happy note. Add to this wicked brew several spoonfuls of TV references and potty humor, and the result is a show that 8- to 12-year-olds will lap up. --Liane Thomas
Description
When their wicked stepmother strands them in the Magic Forest, things look Grimm for little Hansel and Gretel. On their enchanted odyssey, they encounter everything from a scatter-brained Sandman and a bumbling Boogeyman to a wonderfully Wicked Witch who really likes kids - well-done!

Pure Snoozefest .......2007-05-17
This is one of the all time worst movies, although Material Girls will forever hold the title of Worst Movie Ever. But Hansel & Gretel makes a valiant attempt at capturing that title.
The only reason to actually buy this movie is if you're collecting Daokta Fanning, and she's the film's one redeeming quality. Unfortunately, her role is very small.
If you suffer from insomnia, Hansel & Gretel is the cure you've been looking for.
Hansel & Gretel.......2006-07-06
I really enjoyed this movie, while Howey has changed much from his older comedy routines he is still funny and the rest of the actors add some spice to this satire of an old time classic for the whole family - and that Wood Fairy, WOWZERS!
If you like this one too then you might also be interested in Howey Mandel's "Walk Like A Man", another old time favorite of mine (when Howey had hair!)
Great for all ages.......2005-06-08
Okay, I passed on this one for a while, until I got to see a few clips. All the actors are great and it has just the right touch of satire and unexpected twists to keep your interest.
Delta Burke is perfect. Taylor Momsen shines.
My favorite line of the whole movie--"I see fairytale people" ---delivered by Dakota Fanning--always a great actress in everything she's in.
Highly recommended for your DVD library.
Hansel and Gretel.......2004-10-25
This is a great satire on the traditional version of Hansel and Gretel! My grandson and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this video together. He enjoyed the unique characters and I enjoyed the subtle humor of the dialogue. Delta Burke was the perfect evil step-mother and what a witch Vanessa Redgrave made! The closing line delivered by Delta Burke was priceless. All the actors did a fantastic job in making this version of Hansel and Gretel a movie to add to your collection.
Not for Adults.......2004-08-30
My husband and I often enjoy fairy tales and the like. This was an exception. I will admit that 5-11 year olds probably love this, but why suffer thru it with them. If you like this lame movie you'll probably like The Magic of the Leprechauns too. If you want some clever script-writing, adult laughs, and decent acting in the genre, get Jack and the Beanstalk (The Real Story), Tenth Kingdom, or Snow White: The Fairest of them All.

The opportunity to hear Eric Clapton stretch out in an unusual (for him) setting and in the company of musicians the likes of which he rarely plays with is the principal attraction of Legends - Live at Montreux, recorded in 1997 during the Swiss city's annual jazz festival. Clapton is joined by some superb musicians here (pianist Joe Sample, saxophonist David Sanborn, bassist Marcus Miller, and drummer Steve Gadd); but he is clearly the guy the crowd came to see, and as always, he delivers a passel of passionate, stinging solos. But although some of the repertoire has clearly been tailored for him (there are several straight blues numbers, along with the inevitable "Layla"), he's a bit out of his element. Not that this is by any means a jazz concert; notwithstanding the jazz chops of the other players, the bulk of the nearly two-hour set consists of funky, R&B-based grooves, requiring Clapton to play some intricate rhythm figures and ensemble lines, all of which he does well (he's especially effective on "Put It Where You Want It," a Sample tune from his days with the Crusaders). But where a guitarist like, say, Kenny Burrell could imbue this kind of material with interesting chord substitutions and jazz scales, Clapton sticks with the straight-ahead rock style that made him famous, and sometimes it simply doesn't fit. That won't make much difference to folks who just want to hear the man play. The more nettlesome issue is the fact that despite a couple of certified classics (Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" and Jelly Roll Morton's "Shreveport Stomp," neither of which includes the guitarist), overall this music consists of too many riffs and not enough melodies, too many repetitive jams and not enough tunes. In short, Legends - Live at Montreux's biggest problem is its tendency to be boring. --Sam Graham
Description
Eagle Vision is delighted to be continuing the release of DVD's from the archives of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival.
LEGENDS is a unique concert from the Montreux Festival, bringing together the formidable talents of five musical superstars: ERIC CLAPTON (guitar & vocals), STEVE GADD (drums), MARCUS MILLER (bass), JOE SAMPLE (piano) and DAVID SANBORN (saxophone). All acclaimed in their own fields, they work even better as a group.
The music is an intoxicating blend of jazz and blues on classic tracks such as Full House, Shreveport Stomp, Groovin' and a wonderful acoustic version of Clapton's LAYLA that's guaranteed to give you goosebumps.
With a substantial following for each of these artists, the chance to see them playing together should make this one of the most in-demand Montreux titles to date.

...a nice surprise.......2007-05-26
This DVD presents an unusual collaboration of musicians and a unique mix of genres in one concert.
Legends - Live @ Montreux.......2007-01-19
Saw parts of this first on cable TV and thought it was worth owning. Got it home and saw/listened to the the whole DVD; it is really great.
We'll watch/listen many times. Some great tunes and what and ensemble! They are all showcased and what great an eclectic group music from the very best at their instruments.
Somebody kill Sanborn's mic!!! PLEASE!!!.......2006-12-30
I just caught this right now On Demand. Being a big Clapton fan, my girl excitedly put it on for me.
It started pretty cool, although it's pretty clear that Clapton is out of his comfort zone. He's well aware of it and simply tries to hide the fact by playing really fast. Hell, I still love the guy. He still presented us with awesome licks during the course of the show; even if it didn't quite fit in.
Marcus Miller is DOPE!!! Simple as that. His being on this show is such a treat.
Joe Sample is a wasted talent here.
My main gripe?! DAMMIT!!! Somebody tell David Sanborn to stop hoggin all the solo spots! Even when they're playing ensemble licks - He's hella loud! It got really distracting and annoying. I was ready to turn it off just because of this him. Believe me, I like all instruments, but Sanborn just goes and goes and goes. All while being super loud. I'll keep it real - only a saxaphone player can appreciate this much Sanborn.
defective CD's.......2006-11-11
The first CD I received was defective. I returned it and received
the replacement. It also wouldn't play. Amazon's response in both
cases was excellent as I expected. Someone needs to sample these CD's,
however. It would seem unlikely that 2 would be defective. Probably the
whole batch is!!!!
Fun, but awkward.......2006-07-24
I love David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Marcus Miller and Steve Gadd. I have heard several Eric Clapton songs and saw him play with B.B. King before, so I thought I couldn't go wrong with this DVD. Overall, the show presented here is entertaining, but I feel like this band was put together more for publicity's sake than for taking the music to the next level which, for my money, is what I want to see.
There were several great moments throughout the show. David Sanborn's solo work was as great as ever. He played lots of nice licks to be transcribed and emulated by sax players like me. He gets a nice, edgy, unique tone with that metal Dukoff mouthpiece. I loved Marcus Miller's bass solos and found it particularly cool that he came out with the bass clarinet for "In a Sentimental Mood" and at the beginning of "Leyla." I am a big fan of the electric bass, so I enjoyed his "thumping." I liked Joe Sample's ragtime feature (although I didn't feel that it really fit in with the entire scheme of things), and he displayed superb technique in his solos. Steve Gadd was at the top of his game.
But as a whole, the band is a little awkward. There are times that I feel like Eric Clapton doesn't quite fit in with the band, and he seems to know it, by the look in his face. The band attempts to be a "band of all trades" by incorporating jazz, blues and rock all in one. It seems like they just put together some simple arrangements of tunes that a few band members wrote, stayed away from the more challenging material, and basically had a glorified jam session. I just don't think it's possible to get a good sound that way, unless you have a group of musicians who are all on the same "sheet of music," e.g. they are not from completely separate ends of the musical spectrum. The musicians should complement each other and should be able to tell what each other is going to do before they do it.
I think that it's nice to share musical ideas with musicians from other genres, but in the end, each musician will develop his or her own style and will pretty much stick with it for their whole career. I think that Marcus Miller, who put this "Legends" ensemble together, was being too optimistic to think that he could take these old guards, all set in their musical ways, and turn them into a great ensemble. It would have taken more open mindedness and perhaps a couple more rehearsals. It might have worked out better 20 years earlier when they were all in their early 30's instead of their early 50's, and a lot more open minded. I guess that's why Miles' Davis, one of Marcus Miller's role models, had so much success, was because he always played with the young, up and coming cats.
These reasons are probably why the ensemble has not played together anymore since this recording. It was a valiant effort, and it will be enjoyed more by people who are less picky than me. Replace Eric Clapton with John Scofield, Pat Metheny or George Benson and you've got yourself a show, although you may not have sold as many DVD copies.

Description
In the mid-1960's, the British music invasion dominated the airwaves and ultimately changed the face of pop music. One of the groups to ride the wave to superstardom was Herman's Hermits. With their clean-cut image and mop-top haircuts, they went on to be a smash hit in the US, playing to sold out venues across the nation and when it was all said and done, they had sold over 75 million records, collected 11 top-ten hits, and were nominated for three Grammy awards. As part of the Pop Legends Live concert series Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone take to the stage to perform many of their greatest hits and other favorites. The series showcases the band in rare form. You'll hear the stories behind the songs as well as the hits you've come to love including: I'm Into Something Good, Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter, I'm Henry the VIII, I Am, Wonderful World, Listen People, There's A Kind of Hush, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat.
Customer Reviews:
Nilton Silveira - Peter Noone.......2006-11-04
This product is very good, excelent.
Peter Noone is a show man.
Herman*s Hermits are true 60*s legends.......2006-07-12
I realy enjoyed this DVD. Peter Noone is still a great entertainer. He has a good sense of humor while talking to the audience. If you know anything at all about 60*s music you will love his jokes.
I wish that this concert was longer. The music was great and Peter still has a good voice. Hopefully someday he will make a longer in concert DVD. I think that this is one of the best concert DVD*s of the 60*s groups. If you like Herman*s Hermits you will love this DVD.
An Enjoyable half hour.......2005-11-06
As others have listed there are seven (7) Herman's Hermits songs on this DVD. The songs are as enjoyable as ever, but I didn't especially care for the comedy routine between songs. This DVD is from a "60's Pop Rock Reunion" program that featured a number of 1960's rock groups on PBS a couple of years ago that was just simply fantastic. However, the only way to get the DVD of that program was to pledge a couple of hundred dollars for the DVD (I did). At this time it is not available for sale to the general public. If you enjoy Herman's Hermits you will enjoy this DVD. I just wish it was longer and included more of their songs.
Very Entertaining.......2005-09-13
I just received and viewed my copy of this DVD and wanted to share some thoughts on it. Here are some Pro's and Con's:
Cons
----
* The cover says "Performing Live: 9 Classic Hits". There are only 7 Herman's Hermits songs on this (as listed on the first review below & the "Editorial Reviews" above). I can only assume they are adding the comedy bits (i.e.: Mick Jagger, Davy Jones, Johnny Cash) where he mocks a few songs.
* When I read "Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone", I assumed that I would at least see a few of the original members in the band. There are none. I've seen Peter Noone live in concert and he usually performs only as himself (there is a separate DVD that came out that lists only him). A few of his old original bandmates do still perform (I have also seen them live), so that was a bit disappointing.
* Only 45 minutes for $13.49. Should have been sold for a little less ($9.99 or $10.99??).
Pros
----
* Audio and Video are excellant. 4.5 Audio/4.5 Video. Great picture quality but venue lighting was so-so.
* Peter Noone's voice is in great shape. Can still hit the highs and also very youthful sounding.
* He is a wonderful entertainer (musically, comically & animated). Although you only get 7 true songs (approximately 20 minutes in total), you get some comedy bits and audience interaction in between that expand the set to 45 minutes. Peter is still very witty.
I'm very happy with the purchase. I believe most early 60's music fans will agree.
Liked it!.......2005-09-07
Peter Noone has some really great songs. He is getting up in years, but still puts on a GREAT show. I have been to three of his concerts in person, and this is the "next best thing". The quality of this DVD is perfect. Any Herman's Hermits fans will not be disappointed with this DVD. Songs include: I'm into Something Good; (What a) Wonderful World; Listen People; Can't You Hear my Heartbeat; Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter; I'm Henry the VIII, I am; and There's a Kind of Hush.

Description
The story of Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge is one that can be traced back to rock n roll's inception in the1950's. As a front man for The Crests, Johnny Maestro had his first big hit with the record Sixteen Candles. Johnny then worked with the Del-Satins in the mid 60s before teaming up with members of the Rhythm Method to form The Brooklyn Bridge. With Johnny Maestro as their lead singer, The Brooklyn Bridge released its debut album in 1969, scoring a top five hit and a gold record with the Jimmy Webb composition The Worst that Could Happen. By 1972, the Brooklyn Bridge had sold over 10 million records and established Johnny Maestro as one of the premier vocal talents of the era. As part of the Pop Legends Live concert series, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge take to the stage to perform all of their greatest hits and many other classics. As an added feature, the Pop Legends Live series also takes you backstage for rare behind-the-scenes interviews with Johnny and the group. Program includes Trouble in Paradise, The Angels Listened In, Gee, My Juanita, Blessed Is The Rain, Ruby Baby, Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, Ruby Baby (reprise), Step By Step, 16 Candles, Welcome Me Love, Unchained Melody, Your Husband My Wife, Lonely Teardrops, The Worst That Could Happen, You'll Never Walk Alone.
Customer Reviews:
Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge.......2007-05-07
If you liked the Crests, you'll love this dvd. Great sound and a good picture. Johnny sounds better then ever.
What a treat!.......2007-04-27
Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge deliver a solid concert performance. I have watched this DVD many, many times, and I enjoy it just as much as the first time. I do agree with an earlier review that the interview segments should have been separate from the concert. However, listening to Johnny Maestro's incredible vocals is wonderful in any context. There is a richness to his voice that the years have only made better. Great singer, great band, great songs.
Johnny Maestro & Brooklyn Bridge.......2007-01-22
I received my CD quickly and I am pleased with the product.
enjoyable concert.......2006-04-02
Johnny Maestro has a wonderful voice. This concert DVD is very entertaining and the behind the scene interviews by the group make it very interesting. It is very refreshing to see this group perform. They sing their #1 hits. They really enjoy singing and dancing and putting on the best show. Anyone who is a fan of Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge will get lots of pleasure out of this DVD.
Like an aged wine.......2006-03-01
Some voices mellow through the years and assume a timber which belies the ravages of time. So it is with Johnny and the Bridge. Sounding in great voice, the boys re-visit many of their tunes from days passed by and make you glad that they did. With inter-spaced interviews between songs, the concert speaks for itself as it glides through the musical years on a sled of glass. If you enjoyed them then, you will enjoy them now. A must buy for fans who have been running the course for years, and those who are just joining in. A great concert by an ongoing class act.
